Nothing like breaking down sobbing in front of the associate consultant today telling her why I had to take two seperate sick days last month because the patient load is wearing me out
I told her I can't see patients the way I want to if we have to see a new patient for 2-3 complaints every five minutes, eight hours a day with a short lunch in the middle. Working 5.5 days a week
Her response was to tell me "Hey don't go into too much detail with some patients who don't want to listen to you."
Which, I mean, fair enough, but it doesn't change how the doctor-patient consultation model was modeled after a minimum 20-minute consultation and I get five
I mean she did say that I managed to address a lot of patients' concerns within those five minutes so patients are usually very grateful to me but it's a cold comfort when she essentially is saying if you don't want to burn out you have to care less about certain patients
If doctors seem in a hurry sometimes this is one of the reasons

There’s something so special about someone telling you that you should/could be a doctor.
It’s like they saw you and thought, “You care enough about people and are intelligent and determined enough to do something about it. Something that you would have to sacrifice everything for. Because you’re that kind of person.”

back on my bullshit: looking through and making edits to my doc full of Issues I Have That Haven't Ever Been Looked Into for the doctor. which may prove to be futile but i will not think to bring any of this up + will absolutely try and downplay it if i do not do this.
i still keep joking that i will hand them the papers and go "pick one and we can start there" as well as threatening to walk out if they so much as breathe the word "asthma" to me. hopefully i can actually do these things at the appointment.
and i know. i know that doctors hate it when you present possible diagnoses and that you should let them do it themselves but like. you don't understand. i have had 22 years of not having anything done when i had a health concern, to the point where i stopped even realizing that things were concerning until someone else pointed out to me that it may be a problem.
so im coming armed and prepared and if the doctor refuses to work with me like im an actual person, then i will leave and i will ask for a different doctor. rinse and repeat until i find someone who will actually help me.

i don't care how good your herbal remedies are, they should never be used as an alternative for professional medical care. they should be used, if anything, alongside hospitals and doctors, not as a replacement. and if you are taking herbal cures alongside prescribed medication, please check that they don't fuck with each other

Help Ameer’s sister Afnan and their family survive!
Afnan’s dream is to go to medical school and become a doctor. The university she dreamed of attending is gone. In just the first 100 days, all 12 universities in Gaza were completely or partially destroyed by the occupation. Please read her message on the second graphic, then share and donate to help her achieve her dream in Egypt!
Afnan and Ameer’s family of 6 needs $1500 a month for basic necessities to survive. $55 would pay for one day of purchases! Prices continue to rise with the aggression, lack of aid, and increase demand due to violent, forced displacement to central Gaza. The cost to register their family for evacuation is at least $5000 per person! Funds are needed urgently before the crossing re-opens. And the longer it stays closed, the more funds families need to survive.
Make a meaningful donation now at bit.ly/afnanfund or by scanning the QR code. This is one of the simplest ways to make a potentially life-changing direct impact for families surviving genocide and the only way for them to meet their urgent survival goals.

After 2 years, I’m back. Hello, tumblr! I missed the hang of writing! ❤️
My life lately…
Trying to balance my personal & professional life.
Life being a doctor is way more difficult than medical school. But wouldn’t do it the other way around. Will share a lot more of my journey in my next blogs. Just so glad I have the time to do this again. Yay.

My second week of attending life is going well. Setting up my desk, starting to see patients, and getting the hang of the EMR.
I am very much enjoying not having to go through seven layers of administration to get what I need anymore. I requested a specific type of needle for cervical blocks during IUD placements and I got a shipment the next day. Then I asked if I could get a point of care ultrasound for diagnostics, drainage, and injections and this Butterfly was on my desk less than an hour later!
Guest starring my lil window plants 🌱
