I have been writing about advance care plans for a while.

Not necessarily ‘before they were fashionable’ – trend setting has never been my thing, yet, suffice it to say, for a while. (See here from 2017).

We held another of our Covid Conversations on Thursday.

Essentially, it was me, a GP colleague Sara, Colin and Penny from our dementia, frailty and older peoples’ mental health (Yorkshire & Humber) network with others from health, social care and the voluntary sector, discussing, advance care plans (ACP) during the time of Covid.

There is much to be said about all of this, starting with, for example, the ill-fated GPs who thought it an idea at the start of Covid to write such plans on behalf of all of their care home residents, a sort of blanket order to keep them out of hospital.

This was met with outrage from many as it was perceived as old-school medical paternalism, and essentially, one person determining the fate of others without their involvement.

We reiterated our position that this was not where we are coming-from; instead, we began a conversation about what ACPs are (and I guess, are not) – I’ll come to that shortly.

If you haven’t encountered my previous discussions, in essence, ACPs are documents compiled either with the patient (person/resident/client) and a health or social care professional, in which the individual’s preferences are recorded for, in the event of an untoward future development – this is, usually when things go wrong – the patient for example, (let’s stick with the clinical model) becomes incapacitated;

There is no set-format as to the content or structure of an ACP and I have taken it one way, others have proceeded down a different route.

I won’t spend too much time discussing what others are doing, although, indeed, the content and, let’s say, utility of the document is important.

I am still unsure whether people (those who are unfamiliar) have a grasp of where I am heading, for illustrative purposes, see below to the document I have been using.

And, below that, another document called ‘respect’ which is an NHS acronym that stands for ‘Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment’.

I am not trying to make a stance for which document is better – there are others out there, more, and apologies for the delay in getting to the point, I want to be clear about the purpose of my document.

What is it for?

Well, in many instances, it is important for people to know the details of your next of kin, your preferences for burial or cremation, likes or dislikes of various forms of belief; yet, this is very important. Indeed, there is a whole collective which relates to the concept of ‘What Matters To You’ – aka WMTY – that is, your preferences.

Again, this is a big area, and one I have covered before – see here.

I am quite blunt about the purpose of my document, really, who it is for and when it should be used.

I guess you would call me biased.

It is, essentially, to help people stay out of hospital if that is their preference. More specifically, for those who have a high risk of deterioration and for whom in the past, the best and worst of hospital care has been proven to be ineffective if not harmful, the option to stay away is right.

Covid has made all of this more relevant, given the numbers of people who have gone to hospital with one condition e.g. a fall, urine infection and left having recovered from the fall but acquired Covid.

These are not necessarily large numbers of people, although, during the height of the pandemic (unsure whether the height has passed or yet to come as of late June 2020), the fear/dread of hospitalisation was even more powerful.

Sure, admission to hospital, in certain conditions can be great. It can be life-saving, and life-changing, often for the better – the easiest example being, particularly in older people – those who fall and break their hip or neck of femur; without hospital admission most will never walk again or retain any form of independent living and majority will die as a result (often from pneumonia associated with immobility).

Over the years Orthopaedic surgeons have perfected the procedure to repair and replace broken hips and it is mostly performed with a minimum of complication.

Voila.

From broken hip to fix in a week or two.

Please note, for the record, I don’t often praise Orthopods – this is a situation where they are great.

And yet, most older people, particularly those with either advanced frailty or dementia who are admitted to hospital don’t break their hips; they have a deterioration in mobility or worsening of confusion, possibly related to infection, at other times because of an arrival at various tipping-points.

In these situations, there is little an acute hospital can offer than cannot be provided differently in the community; GPs, district nurses, therapists and others can rally-round an individual and working collaboratively with social or domiciliary care overcome the incident, reverse the point of crisis and allow recovery.

Treatment and recovery in a patient’s own home tends to be quicker, preferred (by the patient), cheaper and more effective than admission to hospital and movement around hospital wards, interferences by multiple doctors, nurses and others, unnecessary and at times in appropriate treatments and investigations.

If this narrative has held together, my point is, we can offer just as good, if not better care, treatment and support for particularly older people in their own homes than is available through high-tech medical interventions.

You don’t need multiple blood tests or an MRI to support someone through a crisis at home; time, caring, compassion and being there is often enough.

And, where is all of this in relation to ACP?

Well, if you recall, at the start of this blog I mentioned our Conversation;

I went into this really thinking I knew what I was talking about (always dangerous) with the belief that my document (Minnie-mouse above) was what was needed.

I still think this and want it to be rolled-out more widely for those people, particularly care home residents or those with significant frailty living at home, yet, it became apparent that others, and some of them even had the word ‘ACP’ in their job title saw the document differently, proposing that it is focused far more widely – including those who are otherwise hale and hearty; more like an organ donor card than a do not attempt resuscitation document.

I do get this although my understanding of the system would suggest that if you want to have an effect, you need to focus your energy. That is, provide treatments or interventions to those most likely to benefit.

An example being those who fall.

It is generally accepted that on average people over the age of 70 will fall at least once a year.

Everyone will agree that falling is a bad thing and we should do all we can to reduce its likelihood.

There are different ways to reduce falling, for example, making sure your heels aren’t too high or rickety, ensuring the surface you walk on is even and the lighting adequate.

None of these are ‘care’ and don’t require investment from H&SC (beyond perhaps sorting uneven paving stones).

These interventions, if you want to call them that, may reduce falls on an individual basis, although there are many other factors involved.

Yet, on a population level i.e. of the 10 million people at risk of falling in the UK, the number who won’t break their hips as a consequence, the percentage (relative risk) reduction is quite small.

If however, you find those who are at highest risk of falling – over 85, five or more prescribed medicines, history of stroke, diabetes, dementia, arthritis and so on and, you further stratify by stating, those who have either broken a hip in the past or who have fallen in the past six months – those people are at very high risk.

Wearing pumps will help, but more needs to be done – multifactorial risk assessment and reduction programmes.

Sure, you fix the lighting; you also sort the drugs that make someone unsteady, you consider networks of activity and support, nutrition, hydration, continence and a host of other factors.

This is all time consuming and expensive; it does however significantly reduce the risk of a person who is already at high risk of falling, falling again and of course, breaking something with all that entails.

It is however my point.

My document is intended to focus on those at highest risk of unnecessary hospital admission and empower them and their families or carers; the other ACP document – more broader preferences for example are important, but likely to have little impact at three in the morning when a paramedic is deciding whether to take you to hospital (easier and less paperwork) or engage with the entire health and social care system (out of hours) which is likely to keep someone at home but is much more involved and risky (risk, for if the patient deteriorates in their home without adequate safeguards, the paramedic could be blamed, whereas, if the same happens in hospital, either the system is blamed or it is considered to be bad luck.)

And so, which ACP?

Well, I think, after all of this my conclusion is that we need both.

We need to know a patient’s preferences, likes and dislikes, these conversations are important – ideally with the patient when they are still able or adequately capacitated to tell you what they wish, yet, the other documents are also important, to prevent the system going into reflex and packaging an individual down an acute medical or surgical pathway that will provide them little comfort or overall benefit.

And, here too another component of the conversation which is worthwhile considering – the different system approaches to care;

I am what might be best described as a secondary care doctor (despite working half-time in primary care) – I support predominantly those who are sick, often in the last year or months of life; primary or community care doctors however are involved with a much broader spectrum of health and disease.

We need both.

Pretending that our patients are somehow different or our intentions at variance doesn’t serve anyone well.

Thursday morning. Not another blog about advance care planning! I have been writing about advance care plans for a while. Not necessarily ‘before they were fashionable’ – trend setting has never been my thing, yet, suffice it to say, for a while.

I stumbled across the full text of a 15-year-old paper on intersex people and marriage equality! 

It means sex as in gender, not sex as in doing it. The author is just engaging in some wordplay to catch people’s eyes. 

"Does a Marriage Really Need Sex?: A Critical Analysis of the Gender Restriction on Marriage,” by Randi E. Frankle, in Fordham Urban Law Journal, in 2002,  “discusses the issues surrounding intersex persons and the right to marry.” 

“Marriage seems like an uncomplicated institution at first blush. Many people, beginning in childhood, think that marriage is something for which they should strive as a routine part of adult life. It seems that much of a person's life, particularly in the younger years, is devoted to finding that "’special someone.’ 

“A problem often arises, however, when that special someone is not who society expects, such as when that person is of the same-sex, is transsexual, or the individual is intersex. The topic of marriage then seems to become extremely complicated.”

[Note: this paper uses the terms “transsexual” and “homosexual” because that’s what was considered appropriate formal language in 2002. It also says it’ll use “genetic man/genetic woman” for people who are neither trans nor intersex: “cis” wasn’t in widespread use yet, and “perisex” still isn’t.]

“Opponents of same-sex marriage argue that marriage should remain limited to a union between one man and one woman. This definition categorically excludes homosexuals, transsexuals, and, presumably, intersex individuals.”

[Of course the law didn’t literally say “trans people can’t get married.” But a lot of this paper is devoted to showing how the “one man and one woman” stuff was used against trans people’s marriages in court. Likewise, the law didn’t explicitly exclude intersex people from getting married, it just worked in a way that didn’t make any sense for intersex people.]

“The most common rationale for limiting marriage in this manner, however, is circular: marriage should be limited to between one man and one woman because that is the way it has always been....

“Since their sexual characteristics are ambiguous, the question arises: when are intersex individuals considered to be in an apparently heterosexual relationship? If their chromosomal makeup is incongruent with their physical sex characteristics, or their physical sex characteristics are ambiguous at best, then what criteria determine whether they are in a heterosexual marriage for the purposes of these statutes? Is it even possible for an intersex person to be a part of an opposite sex couple? 

“There are no recent United States cases challenging the validity of a marriage where one of the partners is intersex, and few United States cases involving this issue in general. Case law involving marriages where one partner is a transsexual is analogous, however, because post-operatively they also have ambiguous sex characteristics. These cases can be examined in the absence of case law involving the intersex.

It goes on to share some really interesting legal battles, and what it would mean for someone who was also intersex to be in those positions, and to speculate about what we can take from this about what marriage laws SHOULD look like. 

I’ll put some of that below the cut so this doesn’t get too long, but one of my favorite bits is actually in a footnote.

The paper talks about a ‘90s court case in Texas that said a trans woman couldn’t file a wrongful death action against her late (cis) husband’s doctor, because she presumably had XY chromosomes and therefore couldn’t legally say she had been married to him. 

The footnote says: “Two or three lesbian couples in Texas have been able to obtain marriage licenses and legally marry because one of the women is a male-to-female transsexual. See ‘Lesbian Couple Get a Marriage License,’ SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, June 12, 2001; see also John Gutierrez-Mier, ‘Two More Women Obtain County Marriage License: One Member of Couple Was Born a Man,’ SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, Sept. 21, 2000.”

1. Transsexual Case Law as a Guide a. Littleton v. Prange

Christie Lee Littleton, although her chromosomal makeup was never tested, was born with normal male genitalia. Christie identified as being female since she was approximately three years old. She underwent sex reassignment surgery in her twenties and had her birth certificate legally changed to reflect her female gender. Christie then married a genetic man, Jonathon Littleton, with whom she lived for seven years. 

Upon his death, Christie initiated a wrongful death action against one of Jonathon's doctors in her capacity as Jonathon's surviving spouse. The doctor challenged Christie's standing, asserting that she could not legally be Jonathon's surviving spouse because she was legally a man and Texas does not allow marriage between two people of the same sex. 

The Court of Appeals of Texas, Fourth District, determined that the issue of whether Christie was a man or a woman was a matter of law, thus the judge, rather than a jury, would decide the issue. 

Although the court mentioned such factors as gonads, genitalia, chromosomes, and psychological makeup as being important to determine Christie's sex, it primarily considered genitalia at birth and presumed chromosomes. The court relied heavily on the fact that Christie was physically male at birth and deduced from this fact that Christie must have male, or XY chromosomes. 

The court then stated, ‘[M]ale chromosomes do not change with either hormonal treatment or sex reassignment surgery.’ The court concluded that because Christie presumably had male chromosomes, she was still male and, therefore, could not be legally married to another male.

b. In re Estate of Gardiner

This case also involved a challenge by a third party to a marriage where one of the partners was a transsexual.

J'Noel Gardiner was born with normal male genitalia, but viewed herself as female from puberty. J'Noel's chromosomes are presumably untested. She underwent sex reassignment surgery beginning in 1991, completed reassignment in 1994, and eventually married a genetic male, Marshall Gardiner. As in Littleton, there was no evidence of fraud in J'Noel and her husband's one-year marriage.

Marshall Gardiner died intestate; his son then challenged the validity of the marriage, alleging that J'Noel was a man for the purposes of marriage in Kansas. 

The Kansas Supreme Court discussed the relevant cases at length, but relied mainly on Littleton. The court cited Littleton with approval, noting that a male-to-female transsexual may appear to be a woman, but medical science cannot change a person's legal sex from male at birth to female. 

Although the court acknowledged that by deeming male-to-female transsexuals male, Littleton would allow a male-to-female transsexual to marry a woman, it attempted to avoid the loophole by relying on a 1970 version of Webster's Dictionary to define male, female, and sex.

The court followed the dictionary's definition and defined male as one who begets offspring and female as one who produces ova and bears offspring. The court stated that these definitions simply do not encompass transsexuals. 

The court concluded that since J'Noel did not fit within the meaning of female, she could not legally be married to a male.

c. In re Ladrach

Elaine Frances Ladrach is a male-to-female transsexual who attempted to obtain a marriage license from the state of Ohio to marry a genetic male. As in the previous two cases, Elaine was born with normal male genitalia and was designated male on her birth certificate. Elaine's chromosomes were also untested.She underwent sex reassignment surgery and appeared externally physically female. 

Elaine sought a declaratory judgment that she be deemed female for all legal purposes, including amending her birth certificate and obtaining a marriage license as a female. 

The Ohio Probate Court, applying a similar analysis to that in Littleton, determined that because Elaine was physically a male at birth and presumably had male chromosomes, she was not entitled to change her birth certificate or obtain a marriage license as a female.  

The court primarily relied on a 1966 New York Supreme Court case where that court based its decision on a recommendation of the New York Academy of Medicine that the sex listed on birth certificates should not be changed to help "psychologically ill" people.

d. M.T. v.J.T.

M.T. v. J.T. represents one of the few favorable cases for transsexuals. In this case, M.T., a transsexual [woman], filed a complaint for maintenance and support after J.T., a genetic male, left the marriage. There was no allegation of fraud, in fact, J.T. paid for M.T.'s sex reassignment surgery. 

M.T. was born a physically normal male, but felt as though she were a woman since at least age fourteen. The court noted that no one, to its knowledge, had tested M.T.'s chromosomes. She underwent full sex reassignment in 1971 and married J.T. one year later. 

In determining M.T.'s sex, the court noted that the sex reassignment surgery gave M.T. the physical appearance of a woman and that she was able to engage in heterosexual sex. 

After hearing testimony from several expert medical witnesses, the trial court found that M.T. was psychologically a female throughout her life and the sex reassignment surgery conformed her outward appearance to her psychological identity. M.T., therefore, was legally female at the time of the marriage. 

In affirming the trial court, the New Jersey Appellate Division held that a post-operative transsexual's genitalia and identity can be harmonized through medical treatment. In view of the fact that M.T. "has become physically and psychologically unified and fully capable of sexual activity," the court held she should be considered a woman for marital purposes. 

Unlike previous cases, the court recognized the change of sex from male to female by using a multi-factor test. The court did not rely solely on chromosomes or a pronouncement that sex is "fixed by the Creator at birth.' The court looked at all of the indicia of sex, including physical appearance and gender identity, and concluded that chromosomes were only a small part of the analysis.

II. EXTRAPOLATING THE CASE LAW 

A. Consequences for Marriage 

1. Impact on an Intersex Individual's Right to Marry 

Although there are no recent United States cases directly challenging the validity of a marriage involving an intersex person, the impact of decisions such as Littleton and In re Gardiner on intersex people is considerable. 

It is estimated that one in two thousand infants in the United States is affected by an intersex condition. Even more people may unknowingly have ambiguous chromosomes, that is, neither XX nor XY, but a different combination. After Littleton and others, a far greater number of people are excluded from marriage than originally anticipated.

Littleton purports to conform to Texas's ban on same-sex marriage, announcing that because the plaintiff presumably has XY chromosomes, she is male and cannot marry another male. Since intersex people either have both male and female or otherwise ambiguous physical characteristics, or they have chromosomes that are inconsistent with their physical characteristics, the question remains: Who may an intersex person legally marry? 

If a person was raised as a woman, has female external genitalia, but recently discovered that she has AIS and has XY chromosomes, would the Court of Appeals of Texas, Fourth Circuit, still deem this person a man? 

The court might say that this situation is distinguishable because this person was created this way and did not voluntarily undergo sex reassignment surgery. The court might also say her sex at birth was female because sex is determined by external genitalia at birth and, therefore, she is legally a female despite her chromosomes. 

If the latter is the case, the court is determining legal sex on the basis of physical characteristics at birth alone. 

The next issue that arises is classification of an intersex person who has 5-A-R D. For example, if a child was designated female at birth, but whose body masculinized at puberty, would a court deem this person a man because she has XY chromosomes?

Klinefelter Syndrome also poses a serious problem for courts because the individual appears physically male at birth, yet develops breasts during puberty. Would a court deem this person a man because male genitalia were present at birth even though there are XX chromosomes? Or does the presence of a Y chromosome make a person male? 

In these situations, the court may use physical sex at birth to determine the person's gender. Sex, however, is not always clear at birth. 

These questions will continue to surface if the courts continue to adjudicate gender. If marriage is a fundamental right, limited to opposite sex, or apparently heterosexual couples, classifying an intersex person becomes extremely important. 

The courts will have to define what constitutes an "opposite sex" couple in order to determine whether that couple may exercise their fundamental right to marry. The hypothetical case where a physical female discovers that her chromosomes are neither XX nor XY and she is not, therefore, in one of the two binary categories of male and female, illustrates the difficulty courts face in defining an "opposite sex" couple. 

Courts faced with this situation could find this person to be a woman if female genitalia were present at birth and she was raised as a female, regardless of her chromosomal make up. This is arguably incongruous with a court deciding that a person who identifies as a woman and has chosen to conform her external physical characteristics to that of a woman is not a woman because of her chromosomes. 

Yet the latter is what can be inferred from Littleton; that if a person has XY chromosomes, that person will be deemed a man for purposes of marriage, regardless of whether the person was raised a as a female. 

A person who is a combination of the binary characteristics may thus be entirely deprived of their fundamental right to marry because for whomever they choose, there is an argument that it is a same-sex marriage. Excluding an entire group of citizens from exercising their fundamental right to marry because they fail to conform to traditional definitions of "male" and "female" has no rational basis and serves no legitimate purpose.

Excluding individuals classified as intersex from marriage would be unconstitutional because a group of people cannot legitimately be denied a fundamental right without a sufficiently important governmental interest. Since an intersex individual is a combination of male and female sex characteristics, that person could potentially marry either a man or a woman because, regardless of the sex of the partner, there is an argument that the couple is apparently heterosexual. 

If this person can marry either a man or a woman, then there seems to be no rational reason why others should be limited by their gender.

[It goes on to talk again about each of those court cases, and show how they all contradict each other in what they think defines a man or a woman. And to give examples of different ways that people who appear to be in same-sex couples would, under those court decisions, totally be legally allowed to be married. 

Which is kind of fascinating to me because I always thought that somebody should come up with some intersex and trans couples who would be interested in challenging these laws and totally destroying them this way. But as far as I know, nobody ever did. I didn’t know someone else was coming this close!]

B. Allowing Marriage Between Any Two People 

The restriction on marriage, limiting it to between two people of the opposite sex, has only created problems. The limitation forces courts into the business of determining a person's legal sex, sometimes regardless of how she identifies herself. The limitation has been narrowed further so that in some states it no longer means between one physical man and one physical woman, but only between a person with XY chromosomes and a person with XX chromosomes. 

This limitation forces courts or legislatures to define who is a "man" and "woman.” The courts are forced to place people into one of two categories even when the person does not seem to fit in either. Through this limitation on marriage judges and legislators are allowed to impose their own ideas of what a man or a woman should be onto society. 

This is not a decision that should be left to the courts to decide. If the government cannot unreasonably search one's home, prevent adults from obtaining contraception, or criminalize private, consensual, intimate conduct, then courts should not, in applying a state's marriage laws, be permitted to question the sex or gender of a person. 

Allowing them to do so only leads to extremely inconsistent and arbitrary results throughout the country. An intersex person has no viable option if courts simply decide that sex or gender is binary and act as the sole decision-makers, determining which individuals fall into each category. 

Imposing these categorical definitions on marriage, as the case law illustrates, is socially constructing gender to conform to the traditional view that men are masculine and woman are feminine under the guise of biology and chromosomes. 

The limitation on marriage effectively punishes those who cross gender boundaries. Accordingly, a court, despite Littleton, would probably find a woman who later finds out she has AIS and XY chromosomes to still be a woman, because she did not intentionally cross any gender boundary.  

This woman is not situated differently from the woman who has both male and female genitalia but identifies as a woman, or the psychological woman who was born with a penis but chose to change her physical body to conform to her psychological identity. 

To treat these women differently, allowing one "XY" woman to marry a genetic man and not the others, violates the Equal Protection Clause because similarly situated individuals are being singled out for disfavored treatment with respect to their fundamental right to marry. 

If courts remain involved in determining a person's gender, an intersex individual should be able to self-designate because the physical characteristics are ambiguous. This self-designation should be the determining factor. 

The only rational conclusion for an intersex individual is allowing her to marry either a man or a woman because her sex characteristics are ambiguous, and therefore, with either a man or a woman she could potentially be in an opposite sex couple. 

The only distinction between an intersex individual who is externally physically female, a male-to-female transsexual, and a lesbian is the chromosomal makeup. 

This distinction is arbitrary because many people do not know their exact chromosomal makeup or how a slight variation may or may not have an effect on their lives.  

It would be incredibly difficult, therefore, for a state to provide a sufficiently important interest to justify allowing one to marry a genetic female and not the others because all three couples would appear same-sex. Further, distinguishing the couples on the basis of their chromosomes would not be closely tailored. 

This chromosomal distinction is unreasonable and has no rational relationship to the purpose of the limitation on marriage. Allowing individuals the opportunity to marry whomever they choose would prevent unjust adjudication of sex and gender in marriage. 

Decisions such as Littleton and Gardiner demonstrate the illogical results that follow from a judicial determination of gender identity. Courts should not spend time weighing each indicator of sex in an attempt to classify individuals who may not be classifiable in the binary system and should not seek to change a person's identity, gender or otherwise. 

The logical conclusion, aside from denying any couple that does not fit the "XY" and "XX" model the right to marry, is to allow marriage between any two people.  Any two people who wish to marry should be able to do so.

Magic Creatures and Books - Part 1

Summary: Despite being Professors at the academy, their expertise is required on two separate cases for the Ministry. Asana assists Walter and Julius in capturing a wizard selling magical creatures on the black market for dark wizards and Klaus assists Elias and Luca, taking over from his father, to track down a dark wizard using ancient dark magic to commit murder. Though, she might be pregnant with their first child.

There will be a Part 2 to this story, it was getting very long. 

Behind him, the refrigerator door closed with a soft thud. Having quietly read through the morning paper and halfway through drafting essays for his classes, a slender arm reached over his shoulder.

“Is this today’s paper?” a sweet voice snapped his concentration.

He broke into a small smile hearing her voice in his ear, “Since when do you read the paper?”  

“When a story on my field, taking my interest, is published,” she hinted and gave his cheek a quick peck with her puckered lips.

Of course, they were married, the sixth-year anniversary a shy two months away, and were now employees of the academy where they first met and owned a home in the neighbouring city. However, Asana had only been in her positon for the last five months after being recruited by the Headmaster to take over the classes of a retiring teacher, transferring from the Ministry as a veterinarian and specialist consultant to magic creatures. Here, she taught beginner and advanced classes in magical creature ecology, magic cooking, medical pharmaceutics and potions and taught special classes like spell singing and advanced time wizardry.

At Klaus’ request, he and Asana shared an office. When reaching over his shoulder to steal the paper from his desk, she balanced a slice of chocolate cake on a small plate in her other hand but Klaus gently caught her arm before she ran off to her side of the desk, the polished oak and heavy desks backing onto each other in the centre of the room, “What?” her lips broke into a guilty smile.

“What do you mean ‘what’?” he had latched his hand onto her arm holding the plated slice of cake, “Is that my slice of cake you are stealing?” her face contorting into a guilty smile confessing to her crime, “You ate yours during class or so I hear?”

She had a certain adorableness to her expression Klaus could not bring himself to become mad at her, “…Pretty please?” she begged him to let her have it, “I will make you another cake. In fact, my afternoon class is magic cooking and I plan to teach them how to make a medicinal cake.”

“I am not sick,” he slowly pulled her body closer to his to the point where she hovered over his lap, “My mind has not forgotten our conversation this morning,” his hands collected the plate from her hands where he set it down on the surface of his desk.

“Klaus, I promise you I am feeling fine and I don’t need to see a doctor.”

“It is because of what happened this morning that you have an appetite that won’t stop today,” he argued, his hands skimming up the side of her body through her figure-hugging sophisticated blue dress and resting at the sides of her waist, “You threw up yesterday too. Are you going to pretend it is not happening?”

His strong arms pulled her body closer to his, her legs standing between his and her balance becoming wobbly where she minded where she stood to not step on his shoes where she would likely trip. Placing her hands on his shoulders to maintain her balance, she giggled at his needless worry, “I appreciate you thinking of me, darling, but I promise you I am feeling fine.”

“I am not going to be satisfied until you see a doctor.”

Finding she was not going to find a way out of this conversation, she opted to compromise, “Fine but on one condition,” she proposed, her smile stretching across her face as he looked quite adorable in his pleas for her to go consult a doctor.

Intrigued, he could tell where this proposal was going, “What would that be?” he wondered, his money betting on the cake he confiscated from her hands a moment ago.

Those large and round pink eyes of hers darted to his left, “You give me that slice of cake.”

Her pink eyes sparkled like little jewels from the excitement of tasting the sweet chocolaty sponge of the cake and the chocolate and vanilla icing layered across the top of her bakery-level pastry. Having her in his embrace and the beauty of her adorable face made it hard for him to let her go without a kiss but he had a counter-offer, “Hmm…I was really looking forward to eating it but I suppose you can have it if you pay for it.”

“What! But, I agreed to go to the doctor!”

“Why should you have to hustle a slice of cake from me to make that happen?” Klaus counter-argued and heard her adorable groan, “Haha, you’re like a child who has been told no.”

“I am not a child!” she denied, averting her gaze, “…I’m hungry because I threw up my breakfast this morning, remember?”

“Normal people go to the doctor, Asana.”

“Ugh, whatever. I will make the appointment this afternoon if it will put your mind at ease.”

“Thank you, it does put my mind at ease,” his smile stretching into a larger grin, “Now, I promise you can have my slice of cake if you pay for it,” he pointed to his lips.

“You should have said you wanted a kiss to begin with,” she laughed.

Brushing her brown hair to the side with her finger, her face hovered just above his as she bent down to pay for her cake with a sweet kiss on his lips, “Paid,” she said and went to reach for the plate.

The kiss left him unsatisfied that he stopped her hand from taking the cake, “Not even close,” he smiled, “You can do better than that, right? After all, we are married.”

She kissed him again but it still was not enough. “Try again.” She couldn’t help but feel her body growing hot with embarrassment and her lips uncontrollably curling into a huge smiling.

Composing herself, she deepened the kiss. “Almost.”

His arms cheekily pulled her over onto his lap as her lips touched his again, her little tongue flicking at his lips. “Getting there,” he muttered between kisses and parted his lips to feel her tongue slither between them and map his mouth. An appreciative but faint moan tickling in his throat. The kiss lasted several minutes until she eventually pulled away to catch her breath, “Can I have it now?”

“I suppose but if you don’t make that appointment today I will do it for you and drag you there if I have to,” he threatened while pushing the plated cake towards her and smiling up at her.

Removing her body from his lap, she took the paper and the cake to her side of the desk. Quickly, she opened the large newspaper over her desk and took a large bite from the cake at the same time, her hands flicking to a top news story of an urgent plea published by the Ministry. “Huh!” the news surprised her.

His curiosity peaked about the story which had her entranced but he could guess it since he had already read through it twice, “I take it you are reading the story on that famous veterinarian and tamer who used to work at the Ministry? I don’t know how true the rumours are though.”

“Yeah,” she bobbed her head to confirm his assumption, “It’s crazy to think a respected man in his field would abuse his position to treat magical creatures with such unforgiveable cruelty.”

“That is if the rumours are true, don’t jump to conclusions,” Klaus commented. “No names are mentioned in the article to make a clear judgement ourselves and he had not heard anything specific from his father, agents or other teachers.

“Well, I know who they are investigating because it was a direct result of a misconduct report I filed with my supervisors,” she admitted to Klaus, and tilted her head at him knowing he had met the man once during an event, “Do you remember Edric Vitkevich?”

Hearing the man’s name made Klaus twitch with despise of the man but he kept his calm, “You mean that creep near the same age as my brother who continuously attempted to sleep with you at that fundraiser to protect endangered creatures, even though he knew who you were?”

“That’s him,” she smiled, “He’s being investigated and he has since done a runner on the Ministry. Does that not incriminate him as being guilty of the crimes he is being investigated for?”

Klaus needed to be filled in if he was going to have a fair comment on the case, “What is he being investigated for anyway to be facing serious charges? I understand he’s a respected doctor in your field, doesn’t make sense why he would destroy his reputation if he has nothing to hide.”

“He was originally investigated for professional misconduct against the creatures he was assigned to be taking care of,” she explained, “However, it turned into something bigger than a simple misconduct case. The Magical Creatures Division were trying to stop the exportation of living creatures or magical creature parts, like horns and scales, things like that, from going to the black market for dark wizards. Apparently, the supplier is allegedly him.”

“Those are some serious charges,” Klaus commented, “Why would he do something pathetically stupid?”

“Money,” Asana confidently revealed the motive, “Living magical creatures and body parts, or even harvested magic, of magical creatures sells for extremely high prices on the black market and can be used for some really dark crimes.”

“You worked with him, what do you think?” he asked, “I mean it’s a heap leap from professional misconduct to supplying and supporting dark magical practices.”

She had to think carefully, “Well, I filed the report because of the way he treated the creatures we were assigned to help. When he was working at the hospital governed by the Ministry, I noticed he was misdiagnosing creatures’ illnesses and doubted his testing methods.”

“What did you doubt?”

“Specifically, his handling of the creatures and the misdiagnosis’ leading to the wrong medications being administered to the creatures,” she replied, “After checking with the other staff, they told me he had been reported several times, some were sexual harassment complaints and the others were for misdiagnosis and malpractice. I asked a favour of Julius and then requested a formal investigation after he had misdiagnosed a winged rabbit.”

“An illness common in winged rabbits is hepatic coccidiosis. It is a disease caused by parasites in the intestine and can be contagious through urine, faeces, shared bedding and water,” she remembered back to this particular case, “Typically to diagnosis coccidiosis you would have to run a stool test but he had not done one to determine.”

She still had Klaus’ attention as she continued, “I organised the test myself to rule out the illness and the test came back clear of hepatic coccidiosis. In fact, he had no other symptoms besides diarrhoea so I spoke to the rabbit myself and he told me he devoured an entire chocolate cake.”

“In other words he had a severe stomach ache?” Klaus concluded.

She nodded, “When I confronted Edric about it he laughed it off as being an accident but when your brother told me of the other misdiagnosed creatures I began to see a pattern. It was not an unknown fact, either, that living and deceased creatures were going missing from the rehabilitation centre and morgue of the hospital. So, I asked the Ministry to launch an official inquiry into his professional conduct.”

“Could he just be incompetent with his job?”

“At the end of the day, it is my decision to determine if he is fit for the job. The falls on the Ministry’s discretion,” Asana replied, “Human resources took the case and not long after the inquiry was launched he resigned from his position and transferred to a private research and medical facility for magic creatures. Though, the Ministry kept a close eye on him.”

A moment of silence ensued and after several minutes she looked up to Klaus, “…I did the right thing, right?” she asked, afraid of how her actions might have been perceived by her colleagues, “I only did it because I was concerned for the creatures coming into our care.”

“You protected the creatures which came into your care from a person, who employed to replenish their health, was putting their lives at risk and could have provided the key information for the Ministry to stop the illegal trading of our endangered creatures going into the wrong hands,” the sharp tip of his pen scratched against the white page of the essay before his eyes as he spoke to her and raised his head to gaze softly across to her, “You did the right thing, who cares about perception.”

Several minutes of silence passed but during that moment, his mind was reminded of how she mentioned a few women had filed sexual harassment complaints against the same man who had tried to sleep with his wife at a fundraiser. His mind would not be put at ease without asking her if he tried any moves on her. Looking across at her, he kept his jealous thoughts in check and asked her directly.

“You mentioned he had been reported several times for sexual harassment,” his topic of conversation had he raising her head despite the chocolate crumbs falling from her mouth, “He…didn’t try anything on you, did he?”

She brushed the chocolate crumbs caught on the side of her mouth off but they fell to her desk, “No, I would never let him. I’m a married woman with only one man on her mind,” her words were honest as she cleaned up the crumbs off her desk, “Besides, after the fundraiser I think he got the picture.”

Watching her adorably clean herself up he began to chuckle, “Well, the further he is from you the better. I would never be happy if another man saw you the way you are now,” he pointed to the tip of her nose.

“Huh?” she touched the tip of her nose.

His teasing laughter rumbled in the pit of his stomach with his smile stretching across his face. Putting her finger to the tip of her nose, she felt something smooth and wet cover the fingertip. Her cheeks turned a slight of shade of embarrassed pink as she spotted the chocolate icing on her finger and used a tissue to wipe the icing from her nose, “Is it gone?”

He laughed at her again, “Sometimes I wonder if I have a wife or a child,” he rose from his chair to move his body around to her side of the desk, “You have some right here,” he poked her cheek, “And here,” and poked her chin.

“Ah!” she went to wipe her face but Klaus stopped her, “Klaus?”

“Allow me,” he insisted, trapping her within her office chair, “I don’t want any man to see you being this cute,” he whispered and moved his face closer to lick up the icing smeared across her cheek.

Feeling his body close to hers already ignited her heart beat into a slow drumming but her self-control was fading as she felt his tongue clean up the icing smeared across her cheek and chin, “Klaus…,” she knew this was not the time or the place to be engaging in such activity but she made no move to stop his trail of open mouth kisses going down her neck to her chest, “…Should we be doing this here? Someone could walk in.”

“We have a spare lesson next and I wanted to play with you more this morning.”

Her giggles soon turned into a gasp of pleasure when she felt his hand glide up her thigh but they shouldn’t be doing something this naughty in case a student or the Headmaster came into the room, “We are at work but I promise tonight you can have as much of me as you want.”

“Your heart and mind are saying two different things,” he teased her with his trademark smirk but encouraged her to give into her desire by pressing his lips against hers to clean the chocolate icing left on the lining of her delicate pink lips.

“Mnm!” her faint moan was swallowed by his kiss but she pushed him away. “We can’t, not here,” she reached forward to press her lips onto his, “As much as I want to, we can’t but…,” she kissed him again, “I promise you can do whatever you want to me later when we are at home.”

Her words set a fire to his mind, “Anything, huh?”

His frightening smile made her heart pound in faster beat than before, “What are you thinking of doing to me?” she sounded terrified.

“Why ruin the surprise?” he kissed her lips one last time and pulled his body away from hers, “Be sure to finish work on time today, Bunnyhead,” he bobbed his finger on her nose.

“Oh,” her heart skipped a beat half from fear and half from excitement, “Be nice to me.”

“You said I can do anything you can’t take it back,” his voice echoed from behind her by the stove, “Let’s say, thank goodness tomorrow is the weekend because you are going to be mine all night.”

The sound of the kettle being filled with water did not settle her racing heart but it invited a change of conversation, “If you are having a cup of tea, I would like a cup too,” hopefully a warm cup of Klaus’ delicious tea would ease her racing heart.

Folding the newspaper, she tossed the paper to the side of her desk to pick up where she had left her research into the study of impacts affecting the unicorns of the country and ways to enhance their population numbers. However, before she could even start a heavy and loud knock on their door distracted her from her task.

Waiting for the water to boil in the teapot, Asana smirked at him, “Told you,” she whispered as he crossed the room, walking behind her figure to answer the door.

“Be quiet,” he groaned at her quietly and reached for the door knob.

Pulling the door inwards, two familiar faces greeted him on the other side, “Father, Headmaster,” his father’s presence only raised further questions and Asana turned her head to wave at the men on the other side of the door. “To what do we owe this visit?”

No smiles etched upon the faces of the other two men as they invited themselves into the office. “I apologise for coming by so soon and without any notice but I need both of you to help out at the Ministry,” his father wasted no time in getting to the point of his visit. “Don’t worry about your classes, I already discussed the circumstances with Randolph.”

Randolph had his arms folded across his chest but his usual cheery smile had disappeared behind his serious expression, “The Prefects are already preparing to take over both of your afternoon classes.”

While their names were already volunteered to take the job, Klaus and Asana exchanged curious glances trying to gauge what dangerous job they were being told to take on Walter’s recommendation, “Before we go anywhere, mind filling us in on the case we are being told to do?” Klaus prompted and closing his door for privacy.

“It sounds too serious for us to go in blindly,” Asana supported her husband’s prompt for answers to suffice their curious minds.

Walter nodded and pointed to the teapot, “Were you making a cup of tea?”

“Did you want one too Headmaster?”

“Sure, your tea is always delicious Klaus,” his trademark charismatic smile curled across his face again.

Several minutes of silence passed between them as the tension briefly left the room only to return to the original point of the unexpected visit and recruitment for their assistance on this complex case. “How is your research coming along?” Walter was reading over Asana’s shoulder, “This is a different paper than what you were working on during the holidays?”

“Oh, that was to determine a formula to create a new vaccine to prevent the spread of Anthrakitis, a vaccine I am still perfecting,” she explained, “But, I am revisiting research on the impacts of unicorns in our country and possible ways to enhance their numbers.”

“I see,” Walter nodded but had only a limited knowledge regarding magical creatures, “Well, I hope I will not take you away from your important research for too long.”

Klaus stirred the four cups of tea behind her desk, “That depends on what kind of case you are having us working, Father. You haven’t told us anything about the case,” he turned around and moved a few steps forward to place her hot cup on her desk and handed his father his, lastly the Headmaster sitting on the sofa.

Appreciative words were spoken but Walter began to speak, “Asana, how much do you know about Edric Vitkevich?” he took a slight sip from his porcelain cup, his chapped lips only just touching the edges in a trained eloquent movement, “I understand you were the one who asked for the initial investigation into his misconduct and malpractice when he worked at the Ministry’s hospital?”

His question surprised Asana with her head tilting to the side in confusion, “Why are you dealing with a magical creatures’ case and not the division?” she asked him.

“Your original inquiry has gone missing and the chief suspects someone within the division could be corrupted to help Edric or is involved with the creatures going missing?” he assumed, “Hence, this case has been passed over to me but I am currently short staffed.”

She thought hard and clicked her fingers, “Julius should have a copy of the original report because I went to him for help when I was suspecting Edric of misconduct. He might still have it in his filing cabinet because I know he likes to keep a record.”

“It’s been stolen. He checked,” Walter said, “This is where I need your help, Asana.”

“With what?”

“To find Edric,” Walter concluded, “Specifically, to help locate magical creatures that have gone missing from shelters and hospitals over the recent months. Several endangered species are going missing from forests too. We need to find out why and we have a strong theory this is linked with Mr Vitkevich.”

Asana mulled over the objectives of the case but thought the connections are a fifty to fifty chance of being relative to Edric, “Isn’t that just speculation?” she wondered, but quickly adding a defensive stance to her question, “Does the Ministry have any concrete evidence the creatures disappearing are a result of human interference?”

“As I said, it is a strong theory and one worth pursuing,” his reply was short.

She had already half-heartedly agreed to do the case in her mind but was not a strong person in a fight, “I can treat and tame magical creatures but my fighting skills against a human is beyond my level,” she commented, casting her eyes downward.

A shallow chuckle reverberated from Walter’s throat as the warm tea cleansed his mouth and relaxed his mind putting him in a lighter mood. Silently, he swallowed the black tea, “I have no intentions of putting you in a position as dangerous as fighting against a human but it is unnecessary for you to sell yourself so short when it comes to your magic, my child. Randolph, Klaus and I have nurtured the rare magical gifts which live within you, don’t doubt to turn to them when you need to.”

“He is right,” Randolph nodded along, “Fearing your own power will only make you hesitant to use them. You are a level-headed and mature young lady who follows her own heart, do not allow the fear of using your power prevent you from stopping the darkness which threatens innocent life from flourishing.”

A powerful wizard these days, Asana listened to their wise words and carefully absorbed them in her mind but it did not budge the fear she held within her heart when it came to the rare magical aptitude she possessed. Walter sensed her unwavering anxiety and smiled down at her from where he stood by her desk, “Besides, it should not go to that extent,” he said, “Julius and I will be right beside you and I ensure you that we will protect you. All we need in return is a trusted expert who can assist us with dealing with the creatures since Julius and I primarily deal with dark wizards themselves and not beasts.”

She understood her role in this mission was to tame and treat for any creatures they may find along their investigations into this mystery. His explanation put her mind at ease, “Alright then, will you and Julius explain to me what you know so far when we get to the office?”

“Of course,” though scary by nature, Walter’s natural smile had a charming sophistication expected of a higher society gentleman but he was glad she agreed to help on the case, “Thank you, Asana.”

Listening to the conversation, Klaus cleared his throat of the droplets of tea stuck between going down his throat and down his air pipe and distracted his father’s attention, “By the way you are talking, I am particularly needed on this case but she is my wife and I would rather assist you than stay behind where I am not near her.”

“As your father, I am proud knowing I have raised a gentleman who treats his wife with respect, love and care,” he said after swallowing another warm sip of the black tea, “However, I have another case I want you to lead while we deal with this one.”

After a short silence, Klaus, not offended but anxious about leaving his wife’s side on a potentially dangerous case, disguised his unhappiness from his father, “What case would that be?”

It did not go unnoticed by Walter, “You sound unimpressed with my decision, Klaus.”

“Of course I am,” he wasn’t going to deny he didn’t feel comfortable allowing his wife to be put in a dangerous position, “What husband would be happy of the idea his wife could be heading into a dangerous job?”

“I assure you I will protect her as will your brother,” Walter promised in a firm voice, “Now, before I was given this case as top priority by the Chief I had recruited Elias to assist us in the theft of ancient textbooks confiscated in previous cases because of their dark magic origins. I figured you could help us since you had permission by the Ministry to study dark magic to help us combat it. Someone are using these books and if they fall into the wrong hands, it can be problematic.”

Immediately, his violet eyes connected with his wife’s, “Before anything is agreed upon, are you sure you are feeling well enough to do this?” he asked, concerned over her recent illness, “I don’t want to be under any stress if you are sick.”

Running her fingers through her hair falling down her shoulder like a curtain from its angled tilt as she rested her chin upon her palm, she softly smiled at him, “You worry too much but I will be fine with your father and brother beside me.”

He turned to his father, “Please keep an eye on her and don’t let anything happen to her.”

“Why would I bring harm to a woman I consider my daughter, Klaus?” his deep voice almost sounded offended by Klaus’ begging plea to watch her as if he wouldn’t do that much, “I would never allow harm on my family.”

“So, when do we leave?” Asana confidently asked, seeing they were expected to agree to help and had willingly accepted the challenging missions with an open mind.

“Right now.”

Finishing the last of the tea, Randolph handed Asana a slip of paper, “I have an extensive understanding of the mission before you and have arranged for Conrad to organise a collection of dried potion ingredients which may be helpful to you along with some already developed vials of tranquilliser potions to assist in the rescuing of any magical creatures. He should have a bag prepared.”

As he said so, a loud knock rattled the door, “It is Conrad.”

“Come in,” Randolph invited his old friend inside the room.

With a twist of the door knob, the black coats layered over his body stood out in the bright room. In his hand, a large and brown leather bag with a secure silver zip looked full with everything she could need to succeed in this job. “Thank you,” kindly she thanked Conrad for going to the trouble and then delivering it to the office.

“If there is nothing more,” Walter bowed his head in respectful appreciation for the Headmaster’s assistance, “Thank you for helping us as always Randolph but we shall be leaving now.”

“I am more than willing to assist the Ministry with whatever they need,” the charismatic and usual smile he had not walked into the room with reappeared on his face as he left the office with Conrad in toe, the black clothed professor leaving the bag in her capable hands.

After cleaning the used tea cups and grabbing their wands, they were ready to leave the academy with Walter. “Ready?” he left the room first and walked down the hallway, creating some distance between Klaus and Asana as he locked the office door and she comfortably gripped the handle of the bag with one hand.

Taking her hands in his and out of earshot of his father, he quietly voiced his worry to her, “Listen, I want you to be cautious with this case and stay close as possible to my father or brother,” he said, “Whatever is going on feels…strange and I don’t like him involving you in this at all.”

“You think so?”

“My father does not pursue ‘strong theories’, as he called it, without having hard evidence,” he squeezed her hand, “You were the one to ask for a formal investigation into his misconduct and malpractice of magical creatures, then he suddenly leaves and several months’ magic creatures have been going missing. Tell me you don’t see the link here.”

She thought for a moment and the theory made sense. Stopping in her tracks she turned to Klaus and gave his cheek a sweet kiss, “I promise I will not be reckless, please don’t worry too much.”

“I love you Asana and the thought of something happening to you where I am helpless to protect you makes me quite anxious, especially when you are unwell.”

Hearing his caring words touched her heart and sent a warm bubbly feeling through her body. This time her lips pressed against his in another sweet kiss, “I love you too Klaus and I love you for caring about me,” her lips pressed against his again and her body hugged against his, “But, I am going to be surrounded by powerful wizards so there is no reason for you to worry about me. Okay?”

“I am always going to worry even if you tell me not to,” he replied and bumped his forehead gently against hers, “I wish we were on the same case that why I can protect you myself.”

She giggled, “Why do I feel—.”

“Klaus! Asana! Hurry it up!” Walter interrupted her with his loud roar from down the end of the corridor where the sun brightens the long hall to accentuate its ancient architecture.

“Coming!” she replied, “We better get moving.”

Hurrying to catch up to Walter, they made it to their express train back to the city. Occupying a cabin, Walter sound-proofed the walls with his magic and kept the half-glass half-wood cabin door closed with venetian blinds for extra privacy. Klaus and Asana sat across from him as he began to speak freely about Klaus’ case. “Let me tell you more about the case I want you to lead with your brother.”

“Yes, you said something about ancient dark magic textbooks being stolen?”

Walter nodded, “Yes, they were stolen from the country’s Universal Library of Magic.”

Klaus expression turned to surprise, “How did they manage to smuggle books out the Universal Library. Not only can you not use magic when you enter the premises but only people with special permission can enter the place.”

“Isn’t it also heavily guarded?” Asana asked.

Walter nodded, “Everything you have said is true which is why we are quite anxious of the identity who stole these books. It is not an amateur, these thieves knew exactly what they were after,” he said, “Nothing else was touched, just these textbooks.”

“What type of magic is used in the textbooks they have stolen?” switching into investigator mode, Klaus wondered what type of magic they were after they could track the thieves using those different avenues.

Disappointing news awaited Klaus, “We went down that avenue but the descriptions of the books were stolen along with the books. They knew what they were doing,” but he had another idea for an avenue to pursue, “Your brother is sniffing a trail to find someone who knows about the books and Luca is with him. He is doing that today. Otherwise, the thieves knew the layout of the library.”

“Sounds…professional,” Asana, who had been listening, suddenly blurted out her honest thought.

“We were thinking that too,” across from them, Walter’s stomach growled in hunger but he ignored it, “We were about to go speak with the curator of the library before the Chief handed us this job dealing with Edric and these creatures. Though, I should tell you, there is quite a market value for these books.”

“You think someone sold them for the money and not to use the magic?” Klaus thought about it, “That doesn’t make sense,” he doubted money was the possible motive for the crime.

“I agree. There are dozens of books in that library that would have a significant market value,” Asana agreed, “It doesn’t make sense to steal ancient textbooks into the practice of dark magic to simply sell them for a quick buck. If someone wanted money without drawing attention to themselves, I highly doubt they’d choose a book that would give them this much attention.”

Walter’s stomach growled again but he still ignored it, “Very true,” he agreed, “However, I will have you speak to the curator at the library and meet up with your brother in the afternoon when he returns from Silver City. He’s meeting with a professor who deals with ancient language and culture of the civilisation who wrote the dark magic.”

“Sure,” Klaus nodded, “Who have you interviewed so far?”

“The theft occurred during broad daylight,” his father replied, “We are going over where the theft occurred including speaking to several guards, running through the security feed and trying to determine if the thieves broke through the magic barrier to be able to use their magic to steal the books.”

Again, Walter’s belly let out a louder grumble causing him to sigh, “Dad, you shouldn’t skip meals,” Asana lectured, “It’s not good for your health or your mind.”

“What are you trying to say, Asana?” Walter cut a glare across to her.

She giggled and turned to Klaus, “I now see where you get it from.”

“Get what from?”

“FWS,” she abbreviated her made up illness, “Stands for Famished Workaholic Syndrome.”

“No, the reason for my lack of lunch is because I suffer from what every other husband suffers from.”

“Oh, what’s that?”

“I have a wife.”

Walter struggled to contain his laughter with his son’s complaint and her narrowed pink eyes.

“Do I make you suffer, Klaus?”

“Not all the time but the only reason why I skipped lunch today was because someone stole my cake from the fridge,” he argued, “You stole my lunch yesterday too.”

She had a reasonable excuse, “Hey, I have been sick in the mornings which means my breakfast isn’t being digested and then I am hungry by the time lunch comes along.”

“That makes no sense, but good excuse,” Klaus chuckled and weaved his fingers between hers, “Anyway, if you are going to lecture my father and I about not skipping meals to stay healthy you should not hesitate to consult a doctor if you are throwing up in the mornings. There’s something wrong with you and you should get it treated.”

“Hey! It’s not nice to say something is wrong with me,” she protested, “It’s probably just a virus, it will pass.”

“Why are you so stubborn?”

“The pot calling the kettle black is calling me stubborn,” she retorted, “You are no better Klaus.”

“We aren’t discussing me right now, we are discussing you and your refusal to consult a doctor.”

“I am a doctor.”

“To animals.”

“Are humans not animals too?”

Suddenly, Walter erupted into a fit of laughter. It was rare to hear Klaus being challenged but these small disagreements reminded him of the earlier years of his own marriage and the same little disagreements they still had, “You two remind me of Mary and I.”

Slightly embarrassed by their small disagreement, Klaus’ cheeks turned a shade of pink but he stood to his feet, “I am going to the dining car,” he said, “Do either of you want anything?”

“Salt and vinegar chips!” Asana cheered.

“Are you serious?” Klaus looked into her eyes with a confused look, “You just ate?”

“But I want salt and vinegar chips.”

His head tilted in further confusion because her request was strange, “I thought you don’t like salt and vinegar chips?”

“I don’t, but I really want some.”

“You are such a weirdo,” Klaus decided to go along with it and turned to his father, “Dad?”

“Surprise me.”

Sliding the door open with a loud noise, Klaus stepped out onto the vacant corridor and closed their cabin door again with the latch catching to secure their privacy. Remembering the cabin was soundproof, Walter apologised to Asana, “I had no knowledge you were unwell. For my lack of awareness, I apologise.”

“It’s not a virus,” Asana smiled across to him.

“You already went to see someone?” Walter asked, confused and worried, “I do hope it is nothing serious.”

Though it is unconfirmed, she had a feeling her symptoms were a result of a hot and long shower she shared with Klaus a few weeks back. “It’s nothing serious in a bad way,” her gazed longed into the thin air as her hand came to rest across her abdomen, she didn’t need a doctor to feel the life growing inside of her, “It’s happy news.”

Connecting her body gestures with her words, Walter stared at her in complete surprise and he could not speak for several minutes as he processed the idea of becoming a grandfather for the first time, “Have you told him?”

“Not yet, I want to wait and confirm I am first before I say anything to him.”

Her smile was contagious but he could only imagine how Mary would react to the news of possibly their first grandchild coming into the world, “You are not to leave my side during this mission, understand?”

“Understood, but please don’t say anything to him,” she smiled, “I want to tell him once I am one hundred percent sure.”

“I will keep your secret.”

For another hour and half, they would remain in the confined cabin of the express train to the city with further discussions over their cases and sometimes sitting in comfortable silence. Closer and closer, the city’s skyline came to view and the hard work would begin.

Before leaving the train as it rolled into the underground platform, Klaus turned to his father, “I will familiarise myself with all the intelligence you have collected on the case and then I will meet with the curator. You said Elias will be back by the afternoon?”

“He should be, yes,” Walter had no problems with his course of action and turned to Asana, “We have a meeting in the conference room. We will get you up to speed with the details of the case too.”

Unlike the large town near the academy, coming to the capital city was like moving in a never-ending sea of people, especially during businesses days. Skyscrapers were like human constructed trees, reaching the heights of the clouds. She held Klaus’ hand so not to lose him in the crowd since she wasn’t comfortable with wandering on her own. They walked from the train station to the headquarters of the Ministry, a large and tall building occupying a corner between two streets with a polished foyer.

Being escorted into the building by Walter, no one would challenge Klaus or Asana for going beyond the foyer without an identification card. The elevator played classical music on low volume, it was intended to relax the people who rode the lift but it only agitated Klaus, “Are they ever going to change the music?” he complained.

“I think it’s nice,” Asana smiled, “You can dance to your destination.”

“Do you see me dancing in the street, Asana?” Klaus raised an eyebrow up at her.

“It would be an interesting thing to see,” she laughed.

“Stop being silly,” he chuckled and pulled her into his embrace, “Balls are for dancing not elevators,” he gave her a quick kiss as the door opened on their floor.

Administration staff and agents worked hard to complete their tasks but they all made a clear path for Walter, the boss of his division and a feared and respected wizard across the kingdom. Julius had been waiting for him inside his office and had a coffee in one hand as he slouched across the sofa reading through new evidence.

“Julius,” Walter tapped him on the head, “Would you bring Klaus up to speed on the theft case while I bring Asana up to speed on the case with the magic creatures,” he ordered without room for him to question.

“There is a new development in the theft of the books too,” Julius’ voice faded into the background as he escorted his brother from their father’s office to somewhere quieter, “Elias just called and he is on his way back from his meeting with a professor, apparently an expert in the ancient language and culture of the Arminitian civilisation, but he’s dead.”

“Dead, how?”

“Murdered,” Julius pulled out a photo from the paper he had been reading from and showed his brother, “There’s weird markings all over the body but Elias and Luca agree it is a magic circle.”

Klaus analysed the picture for himself and could see where the lines began to curve around the torso and line with the markings across the arms. However, the markings were in a language he had never seen before. “Well, I would agree it is a magic circle but is this the ancient language of the Arminitian people?”

“Elias said it is.”

“Right,” Klaus nodded, “I suppose it is too early to ask why someone would use the book to commit murder but we need to be clear that these markings came from the book which was stolen.”

He opened the door to his own office but entered before Klaus, “Elias has been using my office to help us with the case so naturally he has left everything here. We have a list of the theft books from the universal library but we are yet to speak with the curator. Since Elias and Luca are already at the scene with the dead professor, you can revisit the library and speak with the curator, see if you can pick up anything we might have missed. We are still in the early stages of this investigation but until Dad and I return from this case, it’s all yours.”

“So, I am simply standing in until Dad and you return from the exciting job,” he sarcastically accepted the file from his brother’s hands.

Julius leaned against the front of his desk and smiled at his little brother’s sarcastic joke, “Well, I don’t consider being outside my comfort zone exciting that’s why we recruited Asana to assist us,” he sighed, “Dealing with humans is quite different than dealing with creatures.”

“True,” Klaus couldn’t disagree and respected Asana for being able to handle magical creatures, “I respect her strength and bravery to be able to handle those beasts but if a Tamer can’t than who can.”

Several minutes of silence passed between them as Klaus read over the new evidence but his attention returned to the report which started this complicated issue, “Asana told me how she came to you for help to launch the initial investigation into Vitkevich. Do you think he stole your copy of the original report?”

Julius began to chuckle, “As the saying goes, a gazelle can get a head start on the cheetah but eventually the cheetah will catch him. He’s the gazelle and we are the cheetahs,” his analogy made Klaus smile.

“Do you think Edric has something to do with the missing creatures?”

“No doubt in my mind he has,” Julius said, “After Asana launched the initial investigation, we had several other tamers, agents and magical creature nurses and vets come to us and put in their own complaints regarding his conduct and mistreatment of the creatures in his care. Complaints of wrong diagnosis and medical treatment. After investigating him, we found strong links between him, a high-ranked agent in the creature’s division and black market auctions, selling, living magical creatures as well as parts of deceased creatures, to dark wizards.”

“So, this is the strong theory?”

Julius nodded, “Edric and his accomplice, Jeanine Duvall, ran.”

“What about the creatures disappearing from the forest and from hospitals?”

“Thefts,” Julius answered, “The creatures in the forest were scared into traps. It is hard to trace them since there is no magical trail, they are covering up their tracks quite well but I have no doubt in my mind they are behind these crimes.”

“You need evidence too,” Klaus reminded him.

“I am aware of that and I will get it,” Julius’ tone was determined.

“You are annoyed because he stole something from your cabinet, aren’t you?” Klaus chuckled.

His question brought back a memory from when they were kids, “You of all people know I don’t like it when my things are touched let alone stolen from under my nose.”

“Yes, I remember,” Klaus chuckled, “Though, you allowed Elias to do whatever he wanted.”

“Ah, but Elias asked me first and between the two of you, he’s nicer.”

Klaus rolled his eyes, “Whatever. If you don’t mind, I have work to do.”

“This is my office.”

“Not at the moment it’s not,” Klaus moved behind the desk to sit in the comfort of the leather seat to read through the new evidence.

“Don’t get too comfortable and don’t move anything out of place,” Julius teased and motioned to leave the room to allow his brother to think in peace, “Good luck.”

Re-entering his father’s office, Walter was catching Asana up on everything they already knew. “What creatures have been stolen and is there a way to find out what parts are being sold on the black market?” she wondered.

“High to low creatures have gone missing,” Walter handed her a list of creatures, “There may be more than what is listed but I hope there is a chance we can find some of these creatures alive and unharmed.”

“Well, if these creatures are still alive there might be a way for us to track their magical residue if their magic has not been sealed.”

“Sealing the magic of a high-end creature would take a considerable amount of power,” Julius commented, “Wouldn’t it?” though, he wasn’t sure.

“Usually,” Asana began to explain, “Years ago, Randy developed these cages to assist the magical creature unit in helping to restrain the magic within high-end creatures in cases where they were injured yet to agitated to allow humans close to them. Sealing their magic by wand is incredibly difficult. Only exceptional tamers like Randy and myself could do something that powerful.”

“We will start there,” Walter said, “Find out who last had those cages and nets or if the tool was reinvented by anybody recently.”

Meanwhile, Klaus had quickly caught up with the evidence and intelligence collected on the theft of the ancient textbooks and gathered his materials to revisit the library to talk to the curator in charge of the collection. Leaving the floor at the same time, Klaus met his wife, brother and father at the elevator.

“Promise me you will not be reckless?” Klaus turned to her.

She giggled, “I won’t be, stop worrying.”

“It is natural for a husband to worry.”

Leaning over on the tip of her toes, she planted her lips on his cheek, “Thank you for worrying about me Klaus,” she understood his worry and felt his love fluttering through her heart but she gazed around her, “Besides, I am surrounded by powerful wizards who have my back. Please concentrate on your job so you don’t get hurt.”

“Who do you think I am? I won’t get hurt.”

The elevator chimed as the doors opened. After the group of people filed out through the doors, they entered with Asana turning to Walter with an idea, “If it is alright with you, while you and Julius go to inventory to see who last checked out the creature cages, I think I would be more useful going to the hospitals and shelters where the creatures were taken and then going to the Natural Reserve to speak with the ranger there. That way I can determine which creatures were taken.”

“Take Julius with you, I can check inventory myself,” Walter agreed.

Like that, the plans changed but Walter was not about to leave her alone with the secret she’s keeping in the back of his mind, “Take care of your sister,” Walter ordered Julius and was the first to vacate the elevator.

Leaning backwards into Klaus, she looked at him from a slight upside-down angle, “Where are you going?”

“Universal Library to talk to the curator of the ancient textbooks and to try and establish how the robbery was committed in the first place,” he smiled at her adorably framed face, “Elias and Luca will be late on coming back since there has been a murder.”

“Murder? By the spells from the book?”

“Possibly, at least that is what Elias has told Julius.”

“I wonder if it is random or a targeted act?” she pondered, “Either way, sounds unpleasant.”

“Murders aren’t supposed to be pleasant, darling,” Klaus bobbed his finger on her nose, “Remember what you promised this morning, you keep looking at me like that you will hurt your neck.”

She regained her posture and turned her body around to face him, “You can’t be serious?” she tried to gauge if he was teasing her, “I promised myself to you tonight on the basis we would be returning to our home tonight. It’s different now we are here.”

“What’s the difference?” he smirked, “We will be staying at my parents’ house.”

Suddenly, Julius felt like he was in an awkward position and was possibly forgotten with the two talking in their own world. He cleared his throat and hoped the door would open at any second, but it didn’t. Instead, it stopped at a few more floors on the way down and he was relegated to the back of the elevator with Klaus and Asana continuing to talk. He spoke up instead, “While I am proud my little brother is not going to die a virgin,” he whispered so strangers would not hear him, “I do not wish to hear it.”

“I don’t recall including you in this conversation,” Klaus retorted.

At last the elevator door opened to the carpark and it felt strange for Asana to jump into the passenger seat with Julius, in place of Klaus, as he drove carefully from the parking lot. Klaus opting to fly to the library by broom.

The real work had started and both cases would take multiple days to solve.

Brown – that was the best word to describe the old library. The building was several stories high but it was a depressing place to visit or to work within. Unlike a public library, this library was more of a storage home for old books that are not used often but are too important to destroy.

Polished wooden brown shelves, likely made several centuries ago, shined under the light orbs of the poorly ventilated location. Noticing the lack of ventilation, Klaus could smell the dust and ink of the old books, most having brown spines with an inviting golden inlay, and it ruled out the old-fashioned breaking in through the vents. As he stepped along the floor seeking the curator, the wooden planks below his feet deceivingly echoed his light footsteps as being heavy. Past many shelves, he noticed magic gates locked the most restricted areas of the library.

“Ah, you must be Klaus Goldstein, Walter’s boy?” Snapping Klaus from his senses, an elegantly suited old man, easily beyond his sixties, with hair as white as a bed sheet extended his hand for a handshake.

“Yes, you must be the curator of this library?”

“Curator?” the old man laughed, “That is a rather nice way to put being the caretaker. As for calling this place a library, it is more a museum for unused but important books but no can come here simply to view these relics whenever they would like. Please, call me Alfred Goldsmith.”

His early perception of the old man that he was agreeable and willing to help the investigators do their job without much restriction, “Mr Goldsmith, I understand magic is unable to be used in the library due to the nature of the spell books housed here—.”

“Ah! You are talking about the magic barrier,” he interrupted Klaus, “Follow me, young man.”

With a lantern in hand, the elderly man escorted Klaus down several flights of stairs. From the exercise, the old man coughed unpleasantly and breathed heavily but he continued without a complaint. Compared to the darkness of the library above, the basement was as dark as night with the odd streetlight illuminating a fraction of path.

“Is there a barrier device which prevents wizards from using their magic within the library?”

In the basement, Klaus struggled to see but could hear the running of equipment which kept library operating. “Yes,” the old man stood next to a pole and near a locked box, “However, this device runs on an algorithm. Walter Goldstein created this device in his very young days before he was married and had children, such a talented man your father is, but it prevented the use of magic as people walk through the building but does not restrict the magic to run the lights and the gates in the restricted sections of the library.”

Klaus looked from the old man to the device secured in the box. Without looking at the device, Klaus could tell it was working because he could not feel his magic energy flowing through his body. However, he had an idea, “Is it possible for the device’s algorithm to be altered?” he asked.

“Yes,” the older man nodded, “But, it would take time.”

Ignoring the old man, Klaus pressed a button on the device. Suddenly, his own powers previously sealed began to flow once again through his body. On the screen of the tool, a countdown clock counted backwards from five minutes. Curiously, the old man watched his experiment and remembered something years ago, Walter had told him, “Oh, this is an emergency feature,” the older man stated.

“I know,” Klaus now knew how the thieves managed to disable the magical barrier surrounding the library, “Someone who knows the place knew how the device worked and knew the layout of the library.”

It felt like a short five minutes, but once the clock had finished counting down to zero the screen went black and he felt his own magic being sealed once again. He pressed the button again and timed how fast he could get from the basement to the shelf using his magic. Taking a book from the shelf, he teleported well within a few minutes and not a sensor sounded an alarm when he had taken a restricted book outside. With the system back in place, his teleportation into the building was blocked.

Meeting with the curator again, Klaus asked a question, “In total how many books were taken?”

“A total of twelve books were stolen,” he said, “They were all from the same collection of ancient Arminitian Dark Culture. This civilisation existed centuries ago and pioneered many dark magic practices from curses and potions which modern dark wizards use to this day. The Ministry managed to find all twelve books but kept them in case they needed to reference dark magic during their cases.”

“Who has access to these books?”

“Myself and only high ranking Ministerial agents with a court clearance to consult the books,” his impressionable humorous attitude Klaus had met with had no vanished, “They are kept not only behind a magic gate but also a glass shelf enhanced with magic. It is near impossible to penetrate with magic.”

“This is certainly a calculated theft, they knew what they were after,” he muttered, “Assuming there is special access to this library, is there a daily record of people who enter the building?”

“Ah, yes, right this way,” the older man now escorted Klaus to a back office, likely belonging to the curator where he worked on his many duties in peace, privacy and comfort. “Run by the Ministry, there is tight security on this library because of the nature of some of these books.”

“Try looking as far back as one month,” Klaus recommended.

“Right,” the old man agreed and then set the records down in front of Klaus, “Not to be rude, I have a matter I must attend to in the library but I will return soon.”

“That’s fine,” not giving as much as a smile, Klaus remained in the office where he could look over the records naming people who had come into the library. “Elias Goldstein,” he was surprised to see how often his brother came to the library, “That seems normal,” he chuckled.

Still, he continued to list names which occurred the most, even his own brother despite knowing Elias wouldn’t have a bone in his body to dare use dark magic. Other names which recurred the most were two – Sadie Laurence and Edgar Renieri. Of course, he did not rule out any guards either and had each person provide him with an alibi on the night the books had disappeared.

He spent most of the afternoon at the library running through his own experiments to determine how the barrier system could be tricked but even under a magic disguise, the record system could reveal the true identity of the person beneath the mask.

“Mr Goldsmith,” Klaus spoke to him several times during his individual investigation but he had everything he needed for to continue the investigation, “I will be leaving now. Thank you for your time.”

Startled, the old man stood to his feet from his desk and extended a gentlemanly handshake, “Any Goldstein is welcomed here,” he laughed, “Your little brother, Elias, comes here often too. He’s a nice young lad, also interested in these old tomes and grimoires to help with his work at the Ministry and inventing magic tools. He reminds me of your father when he was young.”

“I will be sure to tell him,” inside his mind, Klaus laughed at his brother’s predictability and would immediately cross him from the list, “Expect us to come and go Mr Goldsmith.”

“I will be here.”

Farewells completed, he was shocked to learn the sun had begun to set from when he had arrived to conduct his own investigation. However, with a library poorly ventilated and shrouded in darkness, it would be easy for anyone to lose track of time and suspected the old man’s dry cough was likely caused by the dust trapped within the air. He could see his own suit was dirty from spending those few hours inside.

The skies were clear of clouds but a cool afternoon breeze lingered in the air as it gently brushed across his face. Temporarily, his thoughts wandered away from his own investigation and he thought about how Asana was coping with his father and brother. Soon, they would be reunited for the night.

Majority of her day was speaking to the workers at the hospital and the national park ranger to determine how many creatures and what species of creatures were captured unnoticed. At her former place of employment, she noticed the alarm system had been disarmed with magic and the nets and cages were reported missing several months ago to the division.

“No one asked why there was no investigation into the theft?” Julius asked the manager of the hospital.

“I had made the initial report but we were simply issued new nets and cages,” she replied, “I didn’t think anything of it and that’s when we heard creatures were disappearing from the forest too.”

Although it was an honest and carless mistake, Julius didn’t linger on it too long despite his exasperated sigh. Asana roamed around the holding area where the injured animals were left to recover under observation, she left Julius to the interview. “Psst, girl!” something called out to her.

“Huh?” she turned her head to the cages behind her.

With an injured wing and paw, the creature had deep emerald eyes and black bristly fur, the shade of an ash-obsidian. His size and body shape was the same weight and sleekness of an ordinary wild panther. They are fairy cats or Cait Sith. “Yes,” she walked to the cage giving the beautiful creature her attention.

“You are hunting the human killing creatures?”

“Yes, do you know something?”

His deep green eyes were captivating, “I do because I escaped his net in time but my clan were captured,” he said, his head bowing in defeat.

“That’s right,” she remembered everything she had studied on these critically endangered species. Once a lone hunter, they formed prides like lions to combat their declining numbers and now travelled in clans to help each other survive. The large boy in front of her was the dominate male of the clan. “Tell me what happened, I can help you.”

“Can you save my clan?”

“Yes, I will,” she promised the creature.

The big cat leaned forward, “We were minding our own business when we were ambushed by four large foxes, magical creatures too. We tried to fight them, but they were too powerful. Many of my young children were mustered into cages and nets were thrown over the females trying to protect their cubs. Our magic was useless and eventually sealed.”

“Large foxes?” she tilted her head trying to think, “How many tails did they have?”

“Nine, each of them,” it chuckled, “They are Kitsunes, I believe they are under the command of the humans who captured my clan. A man and a woman controlled them but I followed them to a building in the forest it was near water. So many creatures are caged.”

“Where in which forest?” she asked calmly.

“In the northern part by the ocean near a castle,” being a wild creature he could not name the forest but he could tell her its details, “The forest is like a jungle with a leafy and bark ground. I apologise for I can’t name the forests since I don’t know the names, it is my home.”

“No, you have been more than helpful,” she wasn’t at a disadvantage since he described it she could find forests in the region to match, “The people here will take good care of you and I will try to get your clan back.”

She reached her hand inside the cage and gave him a gentle stroke on the head.

“Julius!” she quickly returned to her brother-in-law’s side and dragged him away by the arm, “One of the creatures in the hospital was an escaped victim of Edric and Jeanine. His clan was not so lucky but he followed their scent and found a building nearby an ocean where magical creatures are being caged.”

“Did he say which forest?”

“No, creatures don’t know the name of forests Julius,” she repeated the words of the creature, “However, he did mention seeing a castle and the forest was like a jungle,” her mind was ticking away, “It’s not enough for us to go on the words of what a creature told me but I have another way where we can find the evidence we need.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Let’s investigate by talking to some more people,” he said.

Interviewing shelter and hospital managers as well as the national park ranger, they uncovered how the creatures were disappearing. Using ambush tactics and surprise attacks, creatures were being captured or killed in the dark wizards grab for easy cash on the black market. They had a considerable list after Asana assessed the ecology of the forests around the city with Walter phoning ahead to other officials managing the ecology of creature populations across the kingdom for further insight.

Before long, it was dark but the next step they would take was unclear making the car ride back to the Goldstein residence evermore quiet as they mulled over the investigation.

“Well, we can rule out infection,”

 The doctor speaks with her parents just outside her bedroom and Deryn is barely awake, but she can still hear them. Even though she’s dead tired, more exhausted then she has likely ever been, Deryn strains her ears to listen as best she can. Ma and Da don’t like telling her bad news, she learned that the hard way when Litty the Kitty “ran away”. If Deryn was to have any idea of just how sick she was, she’d have to stay awake whenever she could.

 “Once again, I strongly urge you to seek medical attention from the West End of the city, there’s only so much our hospitals can offer.”

 “We can’t afford it,” That was Deryn’s Ma speaking now, “We can’t move unless the college grants Arty more money.”

 The voices hush then, Deryn manages to sit up in her pillows as she tries to make them out.

 “I don’t see why Maggie or I can’t offer any for the transfusion,” Da sounded angry, “Surely it doesn’t matter-“

 “She has an incredibly rare blood type,” The doctor explains, “Donating either of yours will only cause further problems.”

 Deryn allows herself to relax. This argument Da’s brought up before, and she knows it will only go in circles from here. And really its so much more comfortable to just lie back and watch the bustle of the city life outside cast shadows in her bedroom. Over the past few weeks Deryn has spent a lot of time here, she’s getting rather sick of the wallpaper.

 Perhaps it’s the pain medicine, or maybe all the time cooped up in her room to reflect, but Deryn Sharp is coming to terms with the fact she’ll be dead at fourteen.

 The more sensible part of her wanted to at least hold out until the summer. Deryn was determined to reach her birthday before she died, either through some cosmic defiance or just because fifteen was a better number to put on a tombstone. But a large part of her also wishes that the infection or her blood or whatever was wrong would hurry up. She didn’t like lying here while everyone in the family told her she’d be right as rain in just a few days. That was rubbish and all of them knew it.

 The only solace was that at least she didn’t have to watch Jaspert’s little brat anymore. Before she’d fallen ill she’d have to look after the baby all hours of the day. Something to do with “New Baby Blues”, meaning Deryn’s sister-in-law didn’t like to touch her own son. Deryn understood that, why would anyone want anything to do with something that only knows how to shit and scream? Still, she didn’t see why that meant she had to be his Ma instead.

 Deryn pushed the thoughts from her mind when she heard voices rising, and took note of a few swears she had never heard before. If she were going to meet the angels, at least she’d do it with a rich vocabulary. The door to their little townhouse opened and closed, Deryn waited for her parents to prepare a prettier version of the Doctor’s grim news.

 At least one of them needs to wear a brave face, and when Ma and Da come in Deryn decides it might as well be her. She smiles to each of them and snuggles down in her blankets like its just a cold that has her bedridden. Seeing the smile gives Ma strength, but Da doesn’t quite have it in him. He crosses to the window, unable to look at her.

 “Deryn,” Ma says, sitting at the foot of the bed to stroke Deryn’s knee, “We just had a word with the doctor.”

 Deryn nods her head, knowing that there’s nothing positive or negative she can contribute that will make this any easier for either of them.

 “They call it acute blood loss, and it may be happening for a number or reasons,” she takes a deep breath, “…But the short of it is that your body just isn’t doing what it needs to do. Your heart pumps blood you see, but it seems that you just don’t have enough. So what we’re going to do is find someone nice enough to share some of theirs, and then you’ll be better.”

 If that really were the answer and Deryn was going to get better, Da would be over here stroking hew knee too.

 Either way, Deryn smiles and nods her head. How exactly do you tell your mother that you’re sure you’ll never grow up? How do you tell your father that he’ll never walk you down an aisle, or more importantly, ride in his balloon again? It’s just not the sort of thing to say in polite company. So Deryn holds still for the kiss and feebly asks for some more tea and to see if any of her classmates have left her homework in the mail slot. She’s been out of school for so long and she’d hate to fall behind.

 After Ma leaves Da stays behind for a long while, just looking out the window. Deryn reaches out a trembling arm and croaks, and its like he’s been dunked in cold water. Immediately shaken from his trance he comes to sit by her, taking her pale skinny arm and rubbing his thumbs in circles over her wrist.

 “That’s not all of it, is it Da?” Deryn asks, out of the two of her parents Da was the one she could always trust the most.

 Her father swallows, and then sighs.

 “You’re a special little lass, inside and out,” He tells her, “And you need special blood or you’ll be even more sick. Neither me or you Ma has the same kind, so we’ll need to ask someone else.”

 Deryn nods, though that isn’t much more then she already knew.

 “Why does he want us to find another doctor?” she asked.

 “Apparently there’s some epidemic in London,” Da says, “Similar symptoms to yours, but far more volatile. That means most of state physicians are headed over the boarder to help, and there’s not a lot of supplies left behind.” He sighs and looks away.

 “And we can’t afford one of the private ones from the West End,” Deryn finishes for him.

 Obviously he wants to assure her that they will find a way, but neither of them have the energy to believe it. Da just sits beside her bed, then takes a deep breath in and releases it before leaning forward to kiss her forehead.

 “We’ll find someone,” he assured her, “There’s quite a lot of us, after all.”

 Deryn smiled at the joke, understanding the meaning. They had real family yes, but Ma had always been something of a socialite. Just about everyone in their neighborhood came to Maggie Sharp when something needed to be done, and once word got out of exactly what her little girl needed, no one would think twice about helping. Through kindness and a working-class grit their family ties had transcended that of blood.

 Ironic, when you stopped to think about it.

 There were many visitors over the next couple of weeks. No one wanted to admit they were saying goodbye, so Deryn agreed to be a bridesmaid at weddings, promised to make it to birthdays, and blushed obediently at the mention of handsome nephews and cousins who were just dying to have a word with her. Deryn hoped these poor lads had at least agreed to be a bribe, it’d only be awkward for everyone otherwise.

 Deryn had even heard mumblings that Uncle Terry would be dropping by for a visit. When she had heard that Deryn almost thought she was dreaming, Da’s and his brother absolutely loathed each other. But then there he was one morning, standing at the door with his cap in his hands. All smiles that didn’t reach his eyes just like everyone else.

 It was almost surreal how he out of everyone who had shown their support actually knew Deryn the least, even more so when the tests came back that they shared a blood type. With the threat of death no longer looming over Deryn’s head, she could see the humor in the fact that out of fifty friends and family it was the estranged Uncle she had barely met that would save her.

 Or at least they all thought he was going to save her.

 That’s what Ma assured her anyway, even days after Terry came to stay still no word of when exactly they’d preform the transfusion. Da spent those days marching about the house in a fit of fury, the hatred emanating from him worse then it had ever been at Christmas. One night Deryn laid awake, in too much pain to sleep but too weak to call Ma for more medication, and she heard the shouted conversation from downstairs.

 “I can’t stick around here for months! I have get back to the factory, I got my own kids Arty!”

 “You cannot be serious.”

 “All you need to do is hire one of those doctors from the West End, I’m sure your fancy university pals would love to chip in. Or do you just bring them up in front of Ma to belittle me?”

 “What in blazes are you on about?”

 “Admit it Arty, you always thought you were better then me, and now you’re just making me the villain again.”

 “My daughter is going to die you bastard!”

 Those last words shook the house, Deryn reckoned everyone on the block would have heard them. Now she could see why Ma and Da wanted to keep all of it from her. It was so much worse swallowing her own fate when she knew how close she had been to escaping it. But despite it all, she couldn’t bring herself to get angry. She was just too weak, to cold.

 Uncle Terry was gone by morning, and by evening the next day, Da as well. Desperate, he’d manage to pull together enough money to maybe get some help. Even if West End doctors would sneer at a dirty girl from Northern Glasgow, maybe Da could find someone in London who was willing to help them. Deryn just tried to make herself believe that of course Da didn’t sell the balloon to do it.

 It seemed that she was going to make it to her birthday, at least. The pain was too unbearable to move and she spent most of her time either asleep or wishing she was asleep, but at least she would be fifteen in a month or so. That was something easy she could set her mind to. She didn’t have to wish for a miraculous discovery. Just a month, that’s all she wanted.

 Finally the her birthday came, and Deryn decided to extend all her efforts until nightfall. Tomorrow she’d just let whatever was going to happen, happen. Apparently she had a say in this sort of thing, according to the pastor. Not that the pastor had been about recently. For whatever reason all the brothers and sisters of the church had gone to London to help with the epidemic as well.

 Deryn also stayed made sure to stay awake because she was sure today Da would come back. Throughout the hours of well wishing and gifts Deryn knew that Da wouldn’t miss her last birthday. He couldn’t, even if he was sure he’d find a doctor he’d have to come home for her birthday. But the hours rolled by and still no Da, and after Ma blew out the lights after kissing her forehead, Deryn finally allowed herself to cry.

 Throughout all of this Deryn had refused to cry, refused to scream and beg whoever was up there to let her live. She was so sure that he’d be back, sure that fate couldn’t be that cruel. All she wanted was to say goodbye. Didn’t he want to say goodbye too? Under heavy blankets Deryn sobbed herself to sleep, hoping that she’d wake up somewhere warm and kind in the sky. There weren’t any faces she expected to see there, but Gran always said that you could watch from up high. Maybe then she’d see what Da was up to, maybe find some justification as to why he’d let her die alone.

 Deryn felt so cold, she’d never felt so cold in her entire life.

 But then she woke up, saw a dark figure sitting hunched over at the foot of her bed. Though unable to even move hours before, Deryn found the strength to sit up and tuck her knees under her chin as she had done as a little girl.

 When Da opened his arms to her, she fell right into them. Deryn was much too old for cuddling really, but it was a special occasion seeing how she was dying and all. He pulled her into his large safe chest and she wrapped her arms around his neck. Almost immediately she felt happiness flood her entire being, coursing through her body like a hot drink. Positively beaming, Deryn allowed Da to lay her back in bed and place a kiss onto her forehead. There were whispered words of goodnight, and Deryn slipped away into complete peace.

 It came as a shock to everyone when she woke up the next morning. Even she didn’t know what had happened, last night she was sure she was as good as gone but now Deryn was practically bouncing off the walls. The moment she could feel her legs Deryn raced downstairs in her nightdress, feeling more well then she had in months.

 With a smile so large it threatened to sting she looked about the baffled faces of the kitchen.

 “Where’s Da?” Deryn asked, brows knitting together.

 No one answered her, they were too busy exclaiming at her sudden burst of energy and singing thanks to a cross on the mantle that hadn’t been there before. Deryn kept asking where Da was, but was instead whisked away to the nearest hospital.

 The Doctor was astonished to report that Deryn’s illness seemed to have evaporated overnight. For whatever reason her heart thudded strong and true once again, as if her body had just decided to work in some valiant final effort. It was only after she received a miraculous bill of complete recovery when Ma finally seemed to understand Deryn’s questions.

 “Whatever do you mean Deryn?” she asked, “You’ve only just gotten better this morning, Arty wont be home so quickly.”

 Deryn shook her head and told her Da had come to see her in the night, which only made her Ma smile.

 “You had a vision lass,” she said, “Your body must have known it was going to get better.”

 Deryn frowned and nodded, even though that seemed an oddly specific vision. Either way, it didn’t matter that Da was away now. Deryn was going to see him again, she was going to see everyone again. She’d be a bridesmaid at all of the weddings, attend every birthday party, and politely turn down every handsome nephew and cousin.

 Riding the high from a day of celebration, Deryn practically fell back into bed that night. Smiling up at the ceiling she hoped that the letter would arrive in London soon, or even that Da was on his way now. Closing her eyes, Deryn felt lighter, even lighter then she had before falling ill.

 This time she awoke immediately when she felt Da’s weight at the end of the bed. Immediately she opened her mouth to babble about her recovery and ask if he really had sold the balloon, but looking into his eyes caused her to pause. It wasn’t like the angry look she got when doing something naughty, not at all. The look he gave her was so loving and safe that everything else seemed to melt away.

 Deryn was somewhere warm, impossibly warm, the only thing she cared about was Da hugging her close and the happiness that washed over her. Again he lay her down in bed, and before Deryn could even croak out a goodnight she had fallen asleep.

 When Deryn asked about Da the next day Ma just shook her head. Everyone was a bit worried because they weren’t sure if he’d even seen the letter. Ma assured Deryn that, what with the public health crisis in London, the post was probably slow.

 That night she saw Da again, and by the way her body lurched into his arms without her telling it to, Deryn was sure it was a dream. The next morning she told herself that her ‘visions’ only meant that Da would be coming home safely. They had to be, why else would they feel so real?

 Three more days and three more doctor’s inspections told her that Deryn was ready to return to school. The instructors noticed she seemed sharper then usual, and was able to pick up the material quickly. By the end of the week she was fully caught up, and even managed to read ahead a few chapters.

 One day when returning home from school, Deryn noticed a dread hanging over the household. For the awful minutes it took for Ma to sit Deryn down and prepare the news, Deryn thought that maybe Da was in trouble.

 When Ma told her it was Uncle Terry, Deryn felt a guilty sort of relief.  

 He had been admitted to the hospital a week ago for the same sort of sickness that had plagued Deryn. After screaming at the doctors about shadowy attackers in the night, he had been moved to the psychiatric ward. There he had killed himself, torn out his own neck with his fingernails, by the looks of it.

 Though she felt awful Deryn couldn’t help but also be intrigued by the story. Apparently in his final fit of madness he had trashed his hospital room fending off the supposed attacker. The nurses even gossiped about him begging for forgiveness in the dead of night. Stories began to form as they so often do, but Deryn was fifteen now and above such silliness.

 After Terry’s death Deryn began to feel lethargic again. Maybe the guilt was wearing on her, but slowly she began to relapse into her illness. It wasn’t nearly as bad this time, this time at least she could walk about during the night, but in the day she was sleepy and irritable. The sun pricked her eyes and made her skin itch, as if the very lord was disappointed in her. But worst of it all was that her nightly visions of Da had stopped. Ma said Deryn should take that as a sign he would be home soon.

 It was another eighteen deaths before the authorities announced the London Epidemic had come to Glasgow.

Every night she was full of a spontaneous energy that refused to let her sleep, only to be too exhausted to get up in the mornings. The visions started to return, making Deryn only more twitchy and irritable by day.

 For whatever reason she didn’t care about these mysterious boogeymen. The only victims were adults, and no one from Deryn’s closely knit neighborhood of friends and family had been attacked. Besides, if Deryn really was a target, she wouldn’t be seeing her Da in her dreams every night now would she?

 It was a bit shocking to her when she realized he was probably dead, and was actually a bit glad of the fact. That meant that the dreams were a sign, that he was some sort of guardian angel protecting her in the night. It really didn’t matter anymore that he had sold the balloon. Angels had silvery wings didn’t they? And Deryn could always buy a new one once this whole affair was over.

 Deryn asked Da if the vampires had gotten Ma or Jaspart or his little boy but Da didn’t listen, only continued to run. She beat her fists against his chest and begged him to tell her, finding that she was unable to form tears even in her terror.

They were safe now after all, Deryn could finally let herself sleep. Pulling the cloak over her face she allowed herself to fall limp in Da’s grip even as he desperately tried to keep her awake. The begging and pleading fell upon deaf ears, Deryn only faintly noticed as the sunlight filled their little hiding place.

 The screaming, however, managed to break through her exhaustion. Her eyes widened as she looked up to see Da’s very flesh burning with white hot flames that consumed his entire body. His cries of agony raked across Deryn’s very soul, but she found herself unable to move. Her body wouldn’t listen to her, all she could do was watch from her prone position wrapped up in the cloak. She couldn’t even bring herself to call for help, make any sound at all.

Keep in mind...as I wrote above, there is presently NO celiac disease cure (though there are some cures being tested in various research studies). All the celiac disease "cures" are listed below solely for entertainment purposes, as well as in hopes that they will serve as a reminder to take other people's advice - especially about your health! - with a grain of salt.

Here are just a couple of real-life suggestions people have gotten on how to cure their celiac disease:

"Heal your gut." Yes, working on creating a happy gut by eating probiotic-rich foods, avoiding foods that mess with your body, etc. may help you feel better in the long run...but it won't let you just magically go back to eating Papa John's pizza.

But the only site I found saying clearing up a yeast infection "fixed" someone with celiac was selling a yeast cleanse product...and repeatedly used "celiac" and "gluten intolerance" to mean the same thing. Sooo...do with that what you will.

Try Chinese acupuncture to "reset" your immune system. People in the comments did report their seasonal allergies had improved via acupuncture...but from what I've seen, no celiacs have yet been cured via needles.

And now, drum roll please....we get to the food. Currently, eating gluten free is the only science-backed treatment for celiac disease...but that doesn't keep other people from suggesting different or even more restrictive diets.

Dietary Choices That Can "Cure" Celiac Disease:

Eating gluten from Europe, since its different processing protocols or ingredients make it "safe" for people with celiac disease. Unfortunately, wheat is wheat...and all wheat, gluten and barley are dangerous for people with celiac.

That you actually just need to avoid pesticides covering food, not the food itself. I'm pretty sure pesticide-free wheat will still hurt me. And so far, one of the only studies linking pesticides with celiac disease (in a causal relationship) was later said to have made conclusions "not supported by the available scientific evidence."

Only eating organic fruits and veggies and free-range meats. Which is basically just one form of a gluten free diet, which doesn't "cure" celiac disease but does treat the symptoms.

Guzzling bone broth. 

Drinking celery juice on the daily. 

Eating allll the bananas. At least this celiac disease cure has history, considering that doctors first treated people with celiac disease by prescribing a banana-only diet.

Eating a plant-based diet. You can certainly eat a plant-based and gluten free diet, and you may even find eating plant-based makes you feel healthier overall...but it won't let you eat gluten again if you have celiac disease.

Avoiding GMOs. 

Only eating whole wheat versus refined flours. Because whole wheat is definitely what someone who can't tolerate gluten or wheat needs to heal? Yeah, I'm lost on this one.

This is when my research really started getting fun (in a twisted sort of way, I suppose). Because the more I searched, the more weeeeird celiac disease "cures" I discovered.

We'll start off pretty tame with just three "healthy living" hacks that are often suggested to pretty much anyone with a chronic illness.

Doing yoga. I can confirm that doing hot yoga regularly will not sweat out your inability to eat gluten.

Juicing. Unfortunately, I don't believe fruits and veggies can change our genes...

Drinking hot water every morning. Apparently, this is what everyone in Cambodia suggested one celiac traveler should try...

And then there are the countless things you can buy to "fix" your digestion, your mood and, of course, your autoimmune disease. Just to name a few examples, here are some marketable celiac disease "cures" many celiacs recall being pitched:

Essential oils...because what CAN'T essential oils do these days?!?

Probiotics. Taking probiotics has definitely transformed my gut health for the better, but there is a major limit to their "healing" powers.

Chinese medicine. Again...these cure everything, right?

Digestive enzymes. Possibly helpful when at risk for cross-contamination while eating out or if you have gluten intolerance. Not helpful for de-activating your celiac gene.

Activated charcoal. Sammmme as above.

And finally, the grand finale: a bunch of celiac disease cure suggestions that I saw on my computer screen and couldn't help but think:

"This is too weird to make up."

Get pregnant and your body will "magically" fix its celiac disease. Who knew we all just needed a bun in the oven to suddenly eat wheat?

Prayer. I know this is a touchy subject, and I don't include this "cure" in this grouping as an intentional attack on anyone who believes in the power of prayer. I agree that miracles can happen...but that it's also irresponsible to suggest that people with celiac disease can or should just pray about being able to eat gluten and still put their body in harm's way...

Meditating regularly and reducing stress. Definitely beneficial in helping you cope with the stress of having an autoimmune disease. But that's about it.

Exorcism?!? Yeah...I'll just leave that one here. (And note that the person who shared this story considers the wannabe celiac "exorcist" an ex-friend. Not surprising, I'd say!).

Thinking positively. 

Communion wafers that are made with gluten. As the commenter put it, "I know God loves me, but God's gluten wafer definitely doesn't."

Going to a psychologist or therapist. Celiac disease CAN have a psychological impact on the people who have it, but it's not rooted in our minds.

Waving vials of wheat near your body to "desensitize" it to gluten. A mom heard this tip from her daughter's doctor. Safe to say, they soon found a new practitioner to visit.

At the end of the day, I would be ecstatic if there was a celiac disease cure...not necessarily even for me to use, but as a great option for my children, should they inherit my celiac disease.

Week 3, day 23

My overall cognitive decline continues. Which is to be expected with this sort of treatment, but it’s still scary when you observe yourself sort of crumbling (and it’s even scarier to realize that this might be one of your better days, because you’re aware of your decreased capacity). In complete honesty, the big complaint today is a dramatic reduction in focus, and although it’s at a noticeable level, it’s probably at what I’d experience if I’d just stepped off a cross-country red-eye flight. Which could also be caused by the fact that I got all of ten minutes of sleep last night (or it feels like it, anyway), and spent a fair chunk of my now-limited IQ running down a prescription (even though my physicians are fairly generous about keeping me as comfortable as possible,* when you’re getting some of the more exotic drugs, pharmacies might require a little extra time to back order things). Still, it shouldn’t require all of my energy to make a few relatively-pleasant phone calls - that’s not some sort of smear on the folks I called, it’s just an indicator of how horribly exhausted I am. Which causes further brain damage (this is true), which leads to more neurological disease/symptoms, which then becomes this terrible self-sustaining cycle of illness.

This is ridiculous. If you go into an ER with chest pains, no one tells you that the symptoms are going to get worse, and, maybe, in a few months, they might go away, or the disease might progress, and we have no way to test in the meantime. No. They hook you up to an EKG, put you on clot busters and/or get a cardiac surgeon, and get it done. This is not an indictment of modern medicine; cancer is a complex disease, the brain is hilariously poorly-understood - these are both the result of things that have only been known to science for less than 500 years. But, good God, it’s preposterous to be told “You know those symptoms of the very disease you’re suffering? Yeah, we’re going go make those worse.” And I know we can do better, cognitively, because I have actually done that. Twice (possibly three times; I’m trying for a hat trick), but it does take lots of work, and EEGs. Admittedly, my brain is far more adaptable and resilient than the standard-issue model (and that is the only ace I have in my sleeve, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything)(okay, so I’d trade it for a healthy body and a big house on a tropical island, but that offer isn’t on the table), but, come on, folks; imagine if we made all elected officials pass an IQ test before taking office? We’d have brain damage cures yesterday.

But that’s really just me bitching about the pre-game festivities, because today I did see Radiation Oncologist (I see her on a weekly basis), and she did finally convince me to accept a steroid prescription. Side-note; these are not fun, sexy steroids that make you all Arnold Schwarzenegger-y, this refers to a broad class of drugs that do many thing. And have many, many, oh so many, side-effects, which I’ll bring up in just a second (this is also why I dislike this class of meds, as a general rule). But, Hell with it, she thinks it’ll help with my suture-coming-apart-at-the-seems headaches, and I had to go to Costco anyway. So I now have a  very low-grade decadron prescription, which I hate, because it makes me feel weird and aggressive (and/or weirdly aggressive). I also have a prescription to counteract some of the tummy-based side-effects of decadron. No one’s giving me any prescriptions for the more-subtle affects of decadron (namely, it will keep you awake for a week straight)(because it’s not like sleep deprivation is linked to heart disease, brain damage, or metaboloic diseases).

I feel like I have to give a brief educational aside - because I do consider myself something of a science facilitator, in the grand tradition of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Pat Sajak - about the singularity. “The singularity” is a previously-theoretical moment in human development when our machines - or, more precisely, some sort of artificial intelligence - becomes completely independent of human support, and starts reshaping the world in its image. I’m taking a little poetic license in that description, but for a not-inaccurate portrayal of the concept, consult the Terminator films - or the proper, James Cameron-directed ones, anyway (or just watch the Terminator films because that’s never a bad way to fight existential dread). That was my understanding of the concept, prior to 3:30 PST this afternoon. In order to appreciate the vortex of madness I’m in - and, I apologize to my physician friends reading this if my neo-deconstructivist logic over-simplifies things - I am now taking Drug A. To counteract the side-effects of Drug B. Which was prescribed to counteract the side-effects of Treatment C (radiotherapy, to be completely precise). Which will cure me of Disease D (glioblastoma). If you listen carefully, you can hear space-time folding in on itself whenever I stand up.or sit down. I wouldn’t have consented to another prescription, but the subtext of the conversation seemed to be - and I could be totally wrong, I’m not a subtle man (I wear a cowboy hat in public) - that it wasn’t so much about fixing my suture pain, as much as it was about preventing all the worstest side-effects. Again, I could be completely misreading the scenario - I haven’t had the time to train my SoCal team as well as the NoCal folks. And I don’t mean that in some sort of creepy, sociopathic way; merely that I have a good working relationship with the mad scientists up north, and it took a few years to establish that (again, it is beyond fucked up that I have long-term relationships with cancer researchers, but I digress). At this point, they’re all well-aware that I dislike small-talk and I’m usually somewhat tense when I see them (the Nocal folks are), so they usually cut to the chase, and they know I don’t appreciate redundancies. I’m apparently back at square one with this lot, because Radiation Oncologist did ask if I was feeling okay. I might have overreacted with a 50-decibel “NO,” but I still think I get a gold star for not strangling her. We are taught in America that there are no stupid questions, but that is a lie; if you insist on asking a question that was asked ten minutes ago, it’s a stupid question. I realize that there are multiple double-checks in the medical system, but it’s still beyond aggravating to recount them to the doctor, then have her ask, “So, you’re not feeling very good?” Pro-tip for all future cancer patients, if the nurses and technicians are first-rate, the hospital isn’t likely to skimp out on the doctors. And research physicians, although excellent in many other respects, do insist on completely filling out the paperwork, which is both a blessing and a curse.

A final bit of good news about exhaustion; I’m now way too tired to be scared. I mean, I’m still way past the standard level of fear, but I no longer feel like I’m in some sort of horrible parallel universe of terror. Admittedly, diminishing terror using pain and fatigue sounds like something Josef Mengele would do, but, focusing on the positive, less frightened! And, perhaps, getting through the worst of the potential symptoms (with many, many unpleasant medications)(but, hey, no seizures or puking).

*The phrase “keep them comfortable” is not one you ever want to consider when discussing your current medical status, because it has some rather negative connotations.

Facebook August 11, 2017 - This is a difficult update to make. I've been waiting until I had a few remaining pieces of information but I have enough to let you know what is going on. 

 As you know, I was diagnosed with toxic mold exposure and I am in Tampa at a facility that specializes in treating mold toxicity. The fact that there is a facility that has successfully treated hundreds of thousands of people is something I'm extremely grateful for. 

 You've seen pictures of the port through which I will get my treatment every day. Most likely beginning on Monday. All of this is good, and it's the positive I am clinging to right now. 

 The rest of the news is not unscary. I am sharing this without much censorship because I'm feeling afraid and even though I have a lot of love in my life, this is in many ways a solitary process and I want to feel a little less alone as I begin it.  

This stuff won't be super easy to hear for those who love me very much - much less easy to say - and I'm sorry if it freaks anyone out... but here it is in all it's glory. These toxins, called mycotoxins (from mold exposure), that I am infected with, are extremely poisonous, because of what they do. This is what I have been learning about in excruciating detail. 

1) They compromise the liver's ability to produce the enzymes needed for detoxification required to keep the body healthy. 2) They compromise the body and brain's immune systems. 3.) They destroy the blood brain barrier and gut lining. 4.) The destruction they cause allows parasites and bacteria into the blood, brain and nervous system cells; all of these organisms and toxins produce toxic matter while they simultaneously destroy healthy tissue and organs. I'll let that one sink in for a moment. :( 

5) As this is occurring and the body is preoccupied with trying to keep itself running, the nervous system is inevitably exposed to additional environmental toxins (e.g., petrochemicals in the air and water which cause neurodegeneration, cancers, etc). And here is where it gets sad and scary. 6) As a result of all this toxicity and invasive organisms, cell walls are destroyed, premature death of vital cells happens with increasing speed and regularity, and mitochondrial function is totally compromised. (Mitochondria are essential to life, and mitochondrial dysfunction is responsible for many diseases you know the names of. Multiple sclerosis is one example.) 

This chain reaction has happened because I am genetically unable to create immunity to mold. So this destructive chain of events has likely been underway a long time. There was standing water in our basement that we used to roller skate around. Many of our basements were musty as were my friends. And I lived in plenty of water damaged buildings and apartments. When Mom's basement flooded I was sitting amongst the mold growing on the walls and on our ruined photo albums for hours at a time for months, including after the mold was remediated (killed) which meant I was just marinating in mycotoxins. Many people have asked me why this is just now happening but it hasn't - it's been slowly creeping up. 

 Most people who have known me in the past 10 years have known me as a person with health problems. Panic attacks, increasing body pain and weakness, cognitive changes and sensitivity/electrical activity in my brain that no doctor could diagnose - until I found one trained in environmental medicine (which is not taught in medical school, apparently). The past year I have been unwell quite a lot, and in the past couple months have lost a lot of function as a result of this electrical activity in my nervous system. 

 I learned this week that this electrical activity is caused by biofilm which these many foreign organisms create and live in, inside the fatty tissues of the body - most importantly in the brain. This biofilm becomes an ecosystem, complete with communication from organism to organism, and functions with a lot of electrical activity independent of the brain's function and in response to the brain's function. 

This is a photo of my brain - my precious and only brain - which is so electrified that even in a sleeping state it is never turned off. All that red and orange and yellow is activity - activity that should not be there in a resting state (which is the state in which the PET scan is taken - which required quite a lot of drugs to achieve just like sleep does for me, now, every night). The lower portion, from my understanding, is tissue, and anything not black is non-brain matter. So all that blue stuff is parasites and bacteria and mycotoxins and petrochemicals. :( I learned this week that all of this has led to significant organ damage; my liver is in early stages of failure, fatty tissue destruction in my brain/nervous system is occurring at a record rate (worst 5% of the population), and is on track for multiple sclerosis and scarier things I dare not even mention. The visual and hearing changes I am experiencing along with my balance/coordination issues and difficulty walking, etc are on the list of things that we will address in treatment. 

Next week I will slowly begin the "kill" infusions to deal with all this foreign matter in my brain/nervous system/liver. I'm scared about it, because the body has to go through a very intense process to deal with this. 

Various killing agents are introduced to kill bacteria and parasites, alongside various substances that bind to toxic matter and bring it out of the system. This is delicate business. I have seen much illness, weakness, seizures,etc, in my short time in the clinic. 

But I have also seen dozens of people leaving having concluded their treatment ... and they are walking around even though many came in unable to walk at all. I see people talking and laughing who were catatonic when they came in. I said goodbye today to a really nice man who has the same mold genetics as me, who had to retrofit his entire house to make it safe to move back into. But he was able to do it. It took him 3 months to repair his immune system and cellular state/activity. I took a picture of him with his final IV drip and watched him get his port access closed for hopefully the last time. But while this was happening, a girl about 10 feet away was having her 3rd seizure this week (that I have seen), and the man with very bad Parkinson's (who also has bad mold genetics and had extremely high mold tests and astonishingly high levels of industrial toxins) was crying softly for a very long time. 

So nobody is pulling any punches - it's clear that I will have good days and bad days. But the people who stick with it get better. There are literally thousands of before and after pictures on the walls of people who, with the help of these doctors, were able to break through the biofilm, kill the foreign organisms in their brains/nervous systems, restore healthy gut and brain barriers, rebuild cell walls and repair mitochondrial function, reverse autoimmunity and leave with functioning immune and detoxification systems. And all along the way what's happening is explained and the research and outcomes supporting the approach is readily available and extensive. 

It might be very hard but if these other people can have these outcomes, I have good reason to be hopeful. And it's time. Because its very hard to watch those closest to me suffer while I have been suffering. And because I want to have a positive active, happy life again. I want to have a family, and to spend time with my friends and my relatives who miss me, and whom I miss. All of you, for example. 

I am so grateful to those of you who have reached out to the incredibly special people who have been supporting me during this time. I wish I could be taking more care of the people I love right now the way I used to. I feel sad about the modifications my loved ones are having to make to their own lives. I keep telling myself this is all happening to make us all stronger in the end. For now I just feel alternately grateful and also sorrowful for the circumstances. 

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers - but please try not to worry. I believe in the underlying energetics of things (don't get me started on the energetics of mold) and I know that only positive energy best be pointing in my direction. I will be doing - am doing - all I can on my side to focus on the positive* as well. 

*This might seem like a gloomy update but this process is the first time I have ever opened up so candidly about something so personal, so I consider this a positive step.
