Hello, hope you’re doing well I just wanted to thank you for curing my disability. You’re probably wondering what the fuck, let me explain.

I’m really dyslexic and I only really learned how to read in the sixth grade and it’s still mostly impossible for me to write a grammatically correct sentence. My dream as a kid was to one day read a big chapter book, once I got to high school I could read, in fact I was a very good reader, but I believed that I couldn’t read. Years of people telling me that I’m stupid and that I will never be able to had rubbed off on me. So I experienced the medium of literature through audiobooks. The night of New Year’s last year I stayed up till 2 AM in my tired and delirious state I went on Ao3 thinking it would be funny if I tried reading about an acotar crack ship. I didn’t like any of them, but I was determined to find something I found decent. And that is when I found the fic that for the longest time I pronounced as Kratos, for some reason ( now I know how to say it ) Kerosene. It was then that I did something I thought impossible, I read for three straight days. Anyway I love reading and you helped me realize that.

I don’t know how to express how much I love this medium, and that you were a big part in helping me realize how beautiful words on a page can be, not just hearing them read to me, but actually reading and experiencing what the characters are going through. As silly as it sounds your fanfiction about gay fairies going on a Brokeback mountain adventure to defeat an evil Lord and having a sex along the way change my life and my art.

(suguru later nearly destroys your textbook because he himself grows frustrated with your class. the human sciences are just as confusing to him as it is you. but your grade has technically improved since he began helping you so it's not entirely a loss is it?)

unlike most stories of selkies and their evil human spouses, you're marriage with yuuta is quite the happy one in the seaside town you call home

yours was an accidental love story where he accidentally caught you in his net, only to release you

the next day, you brought piles of fresh fish and crabs and shrimp by his beachside home as thanks, much to his confusion as to where the catch came from

you usually followed his boat when he goes to fish and he learns how to recognize you, often laughing sheepishly when he saw you, warning you not to get too close so you don't end up in the net again

it isn't until a stormy night when yuuta fell overboard that you did anything drastic such as save his life, taking him to the shore and giving him cpr

you stayed with him all night until the storm passed keeping him warm

when yuuta woke up to seeing a beautiful, naked person by his side, he was understandably surprised. even more so when you transformed into a seal right in front of him. that was his introduction to the folk, to magic

now he's surrounded by you and your ocean-filled magic everyday in your little cottage by the sea

you come and go as you please, sometimes for weeks sometimes even for months at a time depending on the time of year

but you always come back and yuuta is happy to see you every time

this is your invitation to talk about all your two theories :))) thoughts on janus? the role of the princes of hell? pleaseeee feed me

thank you for this opportunity anon, as it turns out I have far more to say on this than I thought (buckle up for a massive amount of yapping)

firstly, Janus. He's an interesting character given all we know about him, but he also feels very straightforward. At this point he is being presented as an antagonist, a very central one at that, but in the scheme of things he seems very minor. He is nowhere near the same level of threat as the other antagonistic forces that we know await us in TWP, which brings his role in things into question. Normally, a tsc antagonist has some connection to the main character(s) and there is a specific reason why they become entangled (eg. Valentine is Clary's father, Mortmain created Tessa, Malcolm needed the Blackthorns to raise Annabel etc etc). Janus as a villain however has no obvious connection to any of the twp mains, and it's the total opposite when it comes to Ash despite the fact his motivations are known. He is focused around Clary, Jace, and the other tmi mains and given what we know its hard to see why he would come into conflict with Kit, Dru or Ty. There is the parallels between him and Livvy, but this doesn't seem antagonistic to me, he just represents a possible future for her (as Magnus said in gotsm, if she does not do great things, she will do terrible things).

All this is to say I think Janus is a massive red herring and not the person we should be worrying about. I think his relevance as a antagonist is going to come from his alliance to the Seelie Queen, who's motivations we know nothing about. She has been entangling herself in matters ever since she requested their audience in City of Ashes and we do not know why. It's especially obvious she's up to something when you compare her relevance in the modern timeline to the historical one, where I don't think she mentioned at all. Some of her actions are also suspicious, such as how she went out of her way to ensure Meliorn was the faerie representative. It's a plot point that gets resolved with the reveal she's working with Sebastian, but Sebastian was dead when she did it and I doubt even she would have known Lilith was going to raise him from the dead. This implies she had different plans that she then abandoned to aid Sebastian, because he could give her something she wanted; Ash. Ash clearly holds more significance to her than simply being her child as the Seelie Queen has only ever had two children, Auraline and Ash, and they were born over 200 years apart. There is clearly intention behind this, there is something that both the Unseelie King and Sebastian have in common that the Seelie Queen wants her children to have. What her plans are, we probably won't know until twp, although there may be hints in the Better in Black short story.

Like the Seelie Queen, the Princes of Hell are also likely up to something big behind the scenes. The last time we've seen from any of them was in 2010 with tlbotw; they're entirely absent from tda. This is strange as it makes tda the only series where they do not make an appearance or play a role in the story (side note I do include Lilith as a Prince of Hell even though she's technically not). Which is extremely suspicious and it's very likely that not the case, and that it'll be revealed that they have been influencing things in twp. Thule especially is something I think they're involved in, for a number of reasons. We're told the thing that altered the timeline was a powerful demon giving Lilith the strength to kill Clary, and CC said on tumblr the demon is one who is associated with Lilith in mythology. At the time (2018) CC was very mysterious, but we know enough about the PoH now to make a very educated guess that it was Sammael. Also, it's always struck me as odd that there was such a massive passing of time between Annabel & Ash coming to Thule and Emma & Julian following them. Every other time someone has gone through the portal, time has passed more or less the same and if there was discrepancy it's very minor, nowhere near the years that Ash was in Thule for. I would not be surprised if someone (Belphegor?) manipulated the portal to ensure Ash was in Thule for a certain amount of time before Emma and Julian could interfere with anything. Why the PoH would want any of this I have no idea, except poor Ash is seemingly a pawn in their plans (again) (free him for all these evil plans hasn't he been through enough?)

There is also Lucifer, who is by far the most mysterious tsc character and we know next to nothing about him. However, in the PoH art series CJ did, it does say on Belial's page that a) he claims to have convinced Lucifer to rebel and b) he is sometimes called the "father of Lucifer." A lot of the information in these arts come from preexisting Jewish & Christian mythology and can be easily googled, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Either it's more obscure or CC made it up herself which is slightly terrifying because what does that mean. is Nate losing the title of Tessa's worst brother 137 years after his death?? ig we'll find out in 2026

How did you go from making a comic about Celtic fae to Batman?

We watched the Dark Knight trilogy, The Animated series, and we read a lot of the origin story comics. Honest to god it was the best English class I ever took and not because it was easy but because I actually learned shit.

A lot of our classwork involved looking at the classic Rogues and identifying how they foil Bruce Wayne. That was that thing that really captured me. The reason i started The Good Neighbors is because I really wanted to write a story exploring the history of "changeling" accusations. During the 1800's and even before it wasn't uncommon for people who were queer, neurodivergent, mentally ill, or disabled to be labeled changelings. it really got me thinking about how that would affect someone claimed to be a changeling.

I write about changelings because i like the psychology behind them

Similarly i write about batman because someone got me thinking about the psychology behind him and the antagonists he faces.

I saw an instagram reel earlier this week about books and the differences between older literature and faerie 🌽 and one of the comments was like "all of it is reading" and I just thought "wtf?!" but then I stopped bc like. Why was I having such a visceral reaction to someone saying they like to read faerie smut? It got me thinking: how would I react to a booktok girlie in real life? Most if not all of the anti booktok stuff I've seen is online, and that's only if I search for it. Would we really be insulting them about this if we met them? I definitely think the misogyny and racism is appalling but like...gah? I think faerie smut has its issues (it definitely needs serious reworking) but I think sometimes we end up going too far. Feel free to disagree with me ofc but I do wonder if us anti booktok people can end up being parasocial towards booktok in general.

I think anti-Booktokers get a bad rep for being too critical and rude about our views. Obviously, I'm there are people that do fall into that category, but for the most part, I consider anti-Booktokers critical and respectful. And I apply the same logic to Booktokers.

Personally, I know someone IRL who likes Booktok. And they're one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I've ever met. I even sent a screenshot of my intro post (with links to all the anti Booktok rants I've done) and they agreed that yeah, Booktok is quite flawed.

I think anti Booktokers forget that Booktokers, for the most part, aren't doing anything out of bigotry or spite. Does this absolve them of criticism? No. Absolutely not. But it does give Booktok the perspective of "people being suckered into a community that can be problematic" instead of "bigoted people upholding bigoted values".

Truly, Booktokers read for pleasure and leisure, so they don't think too hard about what they read. It's definitely a problem but (for the most part, I should emphasis this) they aren't doing it out of spite. The roots of Booktok were to bring people who like reading together during the pandemic, not a literary club that analyses texts like we're in seventh grade. It sucks that their enjoyment led to an anti intellectualist, gatekeepy community.

There are definitely the malicious Booktokers. Specifically, my mind flashes to the "books shouldn't be political". Some of them are doing it out of ignorance because they simply can't be bothered to engage with the text, some are doing it because engaging with the text would make them uncomfortable and they don't want that. IMO those are completely different and should be critiqued differently.

Misogyny, racism and general bigotry are definitely appalling, and should be called out. But things are definitely different online and offline, and that should be taken into account when debating/calling out all people, not just Booktokers.

My philosophy is to be kind to everyone (unless they have proven that they simply don't deserve it), and that includes Booktokers. In short, ignorance ≠ maliciousness even if they both equal the same result. They still need to be handled differently.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Faerie smut. From what I've heard (from a heavily anti-Booktok perspective, so take this with several grains of salt) it's bland, heteronormative sex that perpetuates misogyny but "its ok, the women like it!". And definitely, this has problems. Though, I do think when the thinly veiled misogyny trend dies out of romantasy and fantasy romance, so will this genre of Faerie smut. But again, I don't know much about that, so I'd have to do more research on it.

It's very valuable that you were able to stop in the moment and reflect on not only your values, but how they would apply in real life. That's a skill that a lot of people, not just anti Booktokers lack. Again, thank you for the ask! As much as I love the anti Booktok community, it can get a bit parasocial sometimes, like you said.

Before I start I do want to apologize for kind of taking off into a rambling vent post. Which is under the cut.

True, if anything I have a lot of regrets for the fics I deleted and never posted. I keep thinking about the CoD god fics that I had written out and outlined entire plots for. My favorite ones of the bunch were God of Trickery!Nikto x Assassin!reader and God of spring!Gaz x priestess!Reader.

I got embarrassed because the CoD fanfiction community is so large, rabid, and talented as hell. I only took the risk for DbD because the community is smaller and the FtM!reader/M!reader is so underserved if not just straight up non-existent/inactive.

Like a piece of me wishes DbD had the same rabid fanbase, but then I see the hate that gets flung at CoD cosplayers and fan writers on top of quite a few cosplayers turning out to be awful people.

My biggest hang up right now is since doing the polls and seeing the difference between the M!reader and F!reader polls (which the M!reader is done, F!reader is taking a bit longer) it made me realize that I have a lot of lurkers which is okay, but it becomes frustrating when F!reader or gender not even mentioned fics gets a lot of notes. I put a lot of effort and passion in my FtM!reader and M!reader fics and they gets half of the notes. My favorite fic that I've written has the least amount of notes.

Like part of my shame is that the fics I'm most embarrassed about are personal. Because barely and of my posts of comments or even get related asks I don't know why most of my followers are here. I know some of you are here for S.C.R.E.A.M and others Eldritch!reader. (Both are neglected, but not abandoned sorry 😅) Because the series will get massed liked and then a new follow. Which makes me giddy to see.

Honestly if you want to stay a lurker but you feel like saying or sharing something with me please I am on my hands and knees begging you to fill my inbox with your favorite line or random gibberish and tell me which Fic made you feel that way.

I don't care if it's for something brand spanking new or something I wrote it when I first started this blog.

but yeah i'm so curious about this. i think i'm leaning toward the idea that the faery courts are only somewhat tied to geographical locations—like they require physical touchstones to enter them, but are not truly physically "there." for example, the court of termites is underground, and we see kaye entering from a specific physical location, but it's still "separate" and would therefore never be touched by, for example, human drilling or digging.

also, elfhame being the High Court (TM) leads me to believe that even if there are fae courts elsewhere, they don't operate as totally independent powers. i think the faery world is probably more connected even if it's geographically spread out—again because i'm not convinced that geographical "distance" is much of a barrier

to me, this kiiindd of solves the issue of them being in north america, because it means their courts could've been around a long time, but people have only been entering them from north america for a little while. so maybe immigrants isn't quite the right term, but essentially the folk are still newer to north american soil.

honestly the reason i started thinking about all this is because i refuse to accept that the folk have been on turtle island for very long (like pre-european colonization). i just don't appreciate the undertones that carries of erasing indigenous peoples and our ways of understanding the world

For a faerie hunter, the internet is a treasure trove of strange little knick-knacks unavailable at his local hardware store. But he never imagined something so perfect as this - a tiny crossbow, built to shoot matches, Q-tips, and toothpicks. A weapon that will take down a faerie with ease. Even if it kills the creature, the body will be worth more with minimal damage.

He feels a little silly, perched on a rock ledge with the small weapon balanced at the end. But it's worth it when a faerie flies into view.

Shae is calm and unsuspecting of any danger - until something whizzes past him. He stops midair with a yelp of surprise and looks around for the object, expecting a hummingbird or a dragonfly.

Once still he is an easy target.

The second time the flying object grazes one of his wings. Thin and fragile, it tears easily. Shae cries again with pain and alarm. He loses his balance and starts to drift toward the ground, wings flapping furiously to keep himself from dropping too quickly. And that's when the third shot comes.

Something slams into the back of Shae's shoulder so hard and fast it knocks the breath from him. It propels him forward at dizzying speed until he makes impact with the trunk of a tree.

Shae's whole body sags. The toothpick piercing his shoulder keeps him pinned to the bark. He moans, half conscious and in absolute agony but fighting to stay awake. Footsteps approach from behind, his attacker no longer making an effort to be silent.

It takes a few tugs to pull the toothpick from the tree. Shae makes a feeble, pleading sound that falls on deaf ears. The human opens a pouch on his hip and drops Shae into its darkness.

Just read the first TLKOF chapter…. I cannot wait 2 years that’s literally torture!!!! This all reminds me of the terrible stretch between LOS and QOAAD

Some smaller things I noted that I haven’t seen other people mention:

- The man calling for Ash was probably Janus?

- I love Luke so much I’m so happy we see him and Jocelyn again

- I know Faerie time works differently but is there a possibility she spent more time with Ash but forgot the rest?

- Ash doesn’t have any marks? I swear I thought he did but Dru didn’t notice any and I guess it makes sense he never got marked because they stopped working in Thule

- Dru dyes her hair black and has it short but all the official art has her with longer brown hair and blue streak (maybe she had that in the past idk)

- I know CC said that one of the first scenes would be Dru and Thais watching Simon’s band play at the pandemonium- i wonder if that’s still going to be the case? Either that’s in the prologue but I feel like the prologue would also end with a cliffhanger and I doubt both the prologue and chapter 1 would have big cliffhangers. But would the band scene come after this? How do you recover from being missing for 3 days and then going to an all-ages club in new york? OH WAIT I think Julian and Emma are supposed to be there too so maybe that’s why they’re all in New York? Maybe they go to the institute to research and end up joining the TMI gang?

yeah the wait is going to be INTENSE but we will have things like better in black to tide us over so hopefully that will be enough

Luke & Jocelyn being included so early on so was shocking even tho I knew they would play a role in the book given Ash. I'm excited to see more of them & see scenes like them meeting Ash for the first time!!

I have no idea what is going on with Dru but it's clearly something is. idk if she spent more time with Ash but something is up with her & faerie.

maybe he's hiding his marks?? I can't imagine they would go over super well in the courts so they're all easily concealable with clothing. I wonder if he has a voyance rune if that's the case??

I thought maybe she dyes the streaks later on in book?? also it like just occurred that there might be a time jump and that could explain it too. bc I think this chapter was actually the prologue so maybe that's how they end up in NYC??
