The power of motivation: intrinsic vs. extrinsic
Tumblr media
Motivation is essential to achieving success in all aspects of life, from personal growth to career advancement. However, with so many different types of motivation, it can be challenging to determine which is the best fit for you. In this blog post, we will explore the different types of motivation and determine which is the best type of motivation for achieving success.
Tumblr media
Intrinsic Motivation: Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that comes from within. It is driven by personal enjoyment, satisfaction, and a desire to learn and grow. Intrinsic motivation is often associated with pursuing activities that are enjoyable and challenging. Examples of intrinsic motivation include:
· Pursuing a hobby or interest for personal enjoyment
· Learning a new skill or language for personal growth
· Setting personal goals and working towards achieving them
The benefit of intrinsic motivation is that it is self-sustaining, meaning that individuals who are intrinsically motivated do not require external rewards or recognition to stay motivated.
Extrinsic Motivation: Extrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that is driven by external factors, such as rewards or punishments. Examples of extrinsic motivation include:
· Working towards a bonus or promotion at work
· Studying for a test to achieve a good grade
· Exercising to lose weight or improve physical appearance
The benefit of extrinsic motivation is that it can be an effective way to achieve short-term goals and provide a tangible reward for hard work. However, it is important to note that extrinsic motivation may not be sustainable in the long-term, as individuals may lose motivation if the rewards are not substantial enough.
Which is the Best Type of Motivation?
Determining the best type of motivation depends on the individual and their goals. In general, intrinsic motivation is considered to be the best type of motivation for achieving long-term success and personal fulfillment. This is because it is self-sustaining and driven by personal satisfaction and growth.
However, extrinsic motivation can also be effective in achieving short-term goals and providing external rewards for hard work. In some cases, a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation may be the best approach to achieving success.
Tips for Staying Motivated:
Regardless of the type of motivation, staying motivated can be challenging at times. Here are some tips for staying motivated:
Set clear and achievable goals: Setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) can help individuals stay motivated and focused on their objectives.
Find a support system: Having a support system, such as friends, family, or a mentor, can provide encouragement and motivation during challenging times.
Celebrate small wins: Celebrating small wins can help individuals stay motivated and build momentum towards achieving larger goals.
Take breaks: Taking breaks and engaging in self-care activities can help individuals avoid burnout and stay motivated over the long-term.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, intrinsic motivation is considered to be the best type of motivation for achieving long-term success and personal fulfillment. However, extrinsic motivation can also be effective in achieving short-term goals and providing external rewards for hard work. Ultimately, the best type of motivation depends on the individual and their goals. By setting clear goals, finding a support system, celebrating small wins, and taking breaks, individuals can stay motivated and achieve success.

I’m assuming people know this but isagi’s “ego types” he’s ‘created’ are real theory
like how flow state is an actual thing, not just made up for blue lock
self-style ego vs world-style ego is literally just intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation
Tumblr media
So world-type (aka isagi, hiori, reo etc) would be extrinsic motivation and self-type (aka shidou, bachira, nagi) would be intrinsic motivation
I hope this is taken further with in the manga and is actually discussed with all players, not just kept as theory in isagi’s head

this was in the replies of a fallout post
Tumblr media
which makes sense in context as a lighthearted critique... but I can't help but feel it's accidentally hitting on something more.
it is weird that a massive portion of games which claim to satirize things like fascism, or criticize war, are still played through the central mechanic of Glorious Combat, yeah?
Like, of course fighting in the abstract isn't a problem ideologically speaking (there's plenty of good reasons to fight) but when you're trying to make a point about how bad war is, about how it leads to meaningless violence which should be rejected outright, about how fascism is nonsense and the people it attacks are innocent... you run into some mechanical dissonance when the primary action you take is Shooting people for money/XP/etc, yeah?
games like these (fallout, helldivers, 5e*, etc) run into a weird bit of conflict between their professed ideology/messaging and the fundamental mechanical actions that take place in the game. in these games shooting is supposed to be engaging. it's fun, it's the central mechanic. and yet, the narrative attempts to criticize these things.
while yes, many fascists and liberals alike, will misunderstand the narratives of these games because they're reactionaries, I do think that the games themselves are undercutting their own message in service of Fun Shooting. which, without careful though, will lend itself to more reactionary readings. how do you spend your time telling the player that Killing and Shooting is Bad, while developing a game mechanically to tell the user the opposite?
of course it's possible to make games about shooting where the messaging lines up with the mechanics, or anti fascist games where the mechanics line up with the messaging - disco Elysium makes fascism out to be awful both narratively and mechanically, on the other side, Undertale strengthens you from combat while explicitly making that a bad thing, showing you all the negative effects it has on the world at large.
I do think it is a shame that "FPS", and Killing more generally has in many ways become the default mode of interacting with the world for many game developers and studios. it certainly does not lead to ideologically neutral places and I think it warrants more consideration

Thinking about how badly Shion got screwed over in the final chapter of Higurashi again. Meakashi was all about her ostracization and deep loneliness and the way she used Satoshi as a projection of those insecurities (with his disappearance just validating that paranoia), but then her happy ending is just a continuation of that exact same issue. She put so much stake into the reciprocation of her love by her family and this is just the same thing all over again— for the vast majority of their meetings Satoshi was under the assumption that he was talking to his good friend Mion. She’s putting so much emotional weight on this guy who barely knows her and may not care about her as much as she cares about him— if he cares about her at all beyond the fact that he’s a nice guy. Watching every other character overcome or start to overcome their struggles through community while Shion still remains on the periphery tying her happiness to a single uncertain relationship that she can’t be honest about is so deeply sad to me. Shion ily I wish u got a happier ending

I dont want to get too wordy with this, but
I realize after rewatching botw that totk tried its hardest to fix the biggest issues of the first, but in the end the things that people disliked about totk are IN botw. So nothing really got fixed.
Did we get better shrines? Somewhat... Many are still lacking in executing the full puzzle concept they introduce.
Did we get better story? No. Straight up.
Did we get better extrinsic rewards? No.
Did we get better combat? I don't really think so.
There could be more. I know there is.
And all of these are in botw, too. These issues mirror each other a little too well.
Nothing changed!

okee good morning...answering this for real now lmao
Required reading for context first!:

https://www.tumblr.com/painted-bees/713687883290214400/thinkin-more-about-magritte-and-rafael-because-of
Raf and Magritte, before meeting Cortes, had become pretty iron clad as a pair. As skittish/paranoid as Raf can be, Magritte had proven time and time again that she adores Raf for being Raf, and not what he can be used for nor what she imagines he should be. He’s no longer waiting for that other shoe to drop with her, like he’s usually waiting on with literally anyone else. Magritte’s love, so far as he can tell--and deliberately elects to believe in--is completely unconditional. Raf has only ever had three...four people he trusts to see him as himself and do well by him: his grandmother, his uncle, Magritte, and Cortes.
Magritte, of course, genuinely does adore Raf, thinks he’s very sweet--thinks he’s got a -lot- of baggage and needs some proper patience and a gentle kind of love. But he’s very patient with her, doesn’t yell at her for forgetting things or forgetting to -do- things, and just seems to genuinely love having her around, and doesn’t get annoyed when she’s excited about stuff and it’s just...so refreshing.
Needless to say, Raf and Magritte are ride or die for each other. Raf is extremely protective of Magritte’s infectious enthusiasm, optimism, and her overall penchant to see the best in every situation and every person. Magritte just wants to see Raf have an easier time of things and find joy in the stuff that is joyful again.
Raf and Magritte met Cortes...strangely: https://www.tumblr.com/painted-bees/715850323888160768/the-water-between-the-discovery-islands-off-the
Cortes is their...adopted cryptid gf, they kinda have this inherent understanding that Cortes is more a force of nature than anything else. She comes and goes as she pleases, is wholly aloof to the world around her outside of Raf and Magritte (whom are the clear objects of her affection during her little ‘human-kind’ cosplay adventure). Sometimes Cortes is gone for a month or so at a time, with no indication of where she went or what she’s doing. But Magritte and Raf both inherently kinda...know...she’ll be back and she’s fine.
Raf and Cortes have a very quiet, chill kind of relationship--very low energy in the comforting way. The relationship version of “lowfi beats to study to” lmao.
Magritte and Cortes have a very playful, mischievous relationship and Cortes encourages Magritte’s childish impulses--both good and peevish lmao they are a chaotic duo...but they somehow always get away with what ever trouble they end up finding themselves in together.
Neither Magritte nor Raf (nor anyone, really) find anything unsettlingly strange or off putting about Cortes--she’s not even all that weird, really. Just a unique kind of charisma.

god psychology is so INTERESTING we are so back boys. Intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation is what we’re excited about today. Time for me to ramble about psychology!!
So intrinsic motivation is when you want to engage in an activity because you enjoy it and find it interesting. So something like playing video games, watching tv, drawing, writing etc. whatever it is you do just because you like doing it.
And extrinsic motivation is the things you do because you have to or feel you SHOULD. Whether there is a reward for doing the thing or pressure to do the thing, those are both extrinsic motivation. So if your parents want you to go to law school, or if you’ll get money if you go to work.
now the thing that’s fascinating is the RELATION between the two. Because in the simplest of terms, intrinsic motivation is seen as “better” than extrinsic motivation. And you’ve probably heard that before like oh you shouldn’t rely on other people to provide you happiness or whatever like it comes from within. Chances are you’ve thought “cool theory bro. Not as easy in practice though”. (And to be clear, it’s not. Desire for external validation is a whole other ball game)
Now the really interesting thing comes from the studies! They did this with a bunch of young kids and they gave them a bunch of random toys to play with. The toy they were testing was magic markers They essentially had three groups for the kids.
Kids who played with the markers of their own free will, just cause they liked them and didn’t get rewarded for it
Kids who played with the markers out of free will but then got an unexpected reward for it
And kids who were told they’d get a reward if they played with the markers
So they did all that then came back a few weeks later to test it again with the same group, but no rewards this time. And people who played with the markers of their own free will and got no reward played with the markers just as much as before (this is an example of intrinsic motivation)
BUT both the kids in group 2 and 3 played with the markers LESS when there wasn’t a reward. Like it makes sense for group 3 you take away the reward and you lose the motive. But group 2 originally had intrinsic motivation! But by providing that reward for something they did intrinsically they were less likely to do it in the future because they wouldn’t get a reward out of it.
Which to me is already super interesting but like when you apply it to real life it’s even more so!! Like let’s look at the job market with this in mind for a second. Let’s say you’re a teenager, who is financially supported by adults in your life. You don’t NEED money or a job. But you’ve got a really strong love of animals. So you go and volunteer at your local animal shelter. You do this because you love it, and are intrinsically motivated to do it. Let’s say you work there for a bit, and then you’re offered a job! You go yeah I like being here, I’ll take it! So now you’re getting paid to work at the animal shelter. Great, because you’re making money! You work there for a few months, but let’s say the shelter is losing money. They can’t pay people anymore, they have to work on a strictly volunteer basis. You don’t have that as a job anymore. The chances of you going back to volunteer are significantly lower than if you had never had a job at all. You’ve lost your external reward, and that took over your internal motivation.
It’s not that people don’t like things! It’s the power that reward has on you! People experience that intrinsic motivation ALL the time! But when you like or are good at something people try to make money off of it (understandable given the society we live in) but because of that you aren’t doing it for enjoyment anymore you’re doing it for money and you need money to live! So because we’ve created a society where money is so important and people are trying to capitalize off of their hobbies (again, understandable) people are actually way more likely to LOSE interest in those things because of it! It’s not that you’re just miserable and hate everything you used to love your motivation has just changed!!
Idk idk this isn’t very eloquent at all but I think looking at society like this and then the impact capitalism has on our well being and motivation because it essentially demands extrinsic motivation when we are objectively happier and more satisfied when we are intrinsically motivated is very very interesting
