USAF base suffered mysterious invasions of drone swarms for weeks

Swarms of drones attacked Langley Air Base in Virginia, triggering assets even from NASA to investigate.

It was reported this week that Langley Air Base, located in southeastern Virginia in Chesapeake Bay, was "invaded" for weeks by mysterious drones, leading to a comprehensive investigation by the U.S. military.

According to the TWZ website, at Langley Air Base, drone swarms were seen in varying numbers, sizes and formations, indicating the presence of different types of unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

“Last December, Langley Air Base in Virginia became the center of an intriguing security puzzle by going through weeks of unexplained drone activities,” U.S. Air Force officials said, saying the drones were first spotted on December 6, 2023. The incident aroused not only curiosity, but also concern about the safety and protection of the airspace, an official source reported to the TWZ website.

Even if the drones were not aggressive, their appearance in restricted airspace could compromise the safety of the flight. As the TWZ notes, USAF's main concern is not an imminent attack, but the possibility of security risks, such as potential surveillance or defense capability testing.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was promptly notified, highlighting the seriousness with which the military treated these violations.

"None of the incursions seemed to present hostile intentions, but anything that flies in our restricted airspace can pose a threat to flight safety," emphasized the spokesman.

Efforts to address drone activities involved a collaborative approach, involving local authorities and other federal agencies to ensure the safety of personnel, facilities and critical assets in Langley. However, the details regarding the specific measures taken or the impact of drone activities on basic operations remain undisclosed, a reflection of the discreet nature of military operational security.

NASA's WB-57 aircraft was used to monitor the strange activity of drones on the base.

The reaction included sending specialized resources, such as NASA's WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft, emphasizing the importance of having tools to monitor or respond to drone activities.

Interesting flight tonight for the Nasa WB-57 Imaging platform. It hopped to Robins AFB earlier and refueled. Now it has set up an orbit over the Newport News shipyards near Norfolk VA. Fairly low for the WB-57, 22,000 feet.

Observers did not detect the presence of drones, but certainly took note of the abrupt escalation of nearby military operations.

Located in southeastern Virginia, Langley Air Base is officially part of the Langley-Eustis Joint Base, which also includes U.S. Army Fort Eustis. The base hosts F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, playing a crucial role in supporting NORAD and NORTHCOM missions to safeguard the U.S. homeland, including the defense of the country's capital, Washington, DC.

The drone swarms at Langley Air Base present a complex challenge to national security, combining technological innovation with the old game of espionage. As drones become increasingly sophisticated and accessible, their potential use in surveillance or as a tool in more malicious ventures cannot be ignored.

In recent times, there have been numerous cases of unidentified drones invading U.S. military bases, critical infrastructure and even nuclear power plants. For example, U.S. warships in the Pacific have encountered swarms of drones several times between 2016 and 2021.

So far, no country has taken responsibility for these drone activities. However, last year, there was an incident in which a Chinese spy balloon was spotted floating over the United States, leading to allegations of Chinese espionage against the US.

Celeste felt the presence before she saw it. Her trained thaumic senses were overwhelmed, the presence overwhelmingly bright and powerful. Without thinking, she stepped to the side of the road and dropped into a three-point kneel: one knee and the opposite fist to the ground and the other fist against her chest.

She had read occasionally about these beings. Sometimes demi-gods, sometimes creatures with unusual genetics, and sometimes a consciousness born out of a magical conflux. She wasn't sure how much stock she put in those accounts, but what she was feeling now was undeniable.

So she knelt. Hopefully whatever it was would consider her either uninteresting enough or respectful enough to not harm her.

She heard one of the basic motor vehicles that were popular here glide up. She was tempted to look up, but steeled herself and held still.

Until she heard the vehicle stop and something with hooves stepped off.

"Hey, you okay?" a rustic voice said. It was higher than Celeste expected.

She looked up to see a fawn squatting down in front of her. Her thaumic senses screamed at her: this was the source. Power radiated off of the faun, almost bending the thaumic field around by sheer force of presence.

Celeste just stared, her mouth hanging open and refusing to work.

"Uh," the fawn said, "I'm going to assume... Ma'am? Are you okay?"

"Teach me," Celeste breathed.

The fawn quirked a smile. "Excuse me?"

Celeste blinked and finally processed where she was and—more importantly—the completely nonplussed fawn in front of her.

She blushed and scratched the back of her head. "Sorry," she said. "I... uh, got overwhelmed." She took a breath. "Your thaumic presence is... incredible. I've never seen anything like it, it's beautiful."

She realized what she said about the same time the faun did, if their mutual blushes were any indication. "I'm flattered, I think," the faun said, "but I'm taken."

Celeste sighed and shook her head. "I'm so sorry," she said. "I... have completely forgotten my manners." She cleared her throat. "I'm looking for Eutychia of Mesone."

The faun flinched. "Are they in trouble?"

Celeste shook her head. "Not at all," she said. "They have a situation I've been tasked with helping." She sighed. "If you can point me in the right direction, I'll be on my way and you never have to see me again."

The faun laughed. It was a bright, musical laugh. "Well, friend," they said, "I've got good news and bad news."

Celeste connected the dots. "Gaia, send me to dust now," she groaned.

Eutychia stood up and held out a hand to Celeste. Celeste took it and rose to her feet.

"I'm headed into town," Euty said. "Are you in a rush?"

"Only to get here," Celeste said, trying to shake off the awkwardness.

The Reality of Adventurers

In a plane of existence where half of the flora and fauna will kill a person on a regular basis, with a small percentage doing so while being technically dead, it's no surprise that adventurers exist. The nobility and ruling classes can sneer and call them mercenaries and sell-swords all they like, the reality is, without adventurers, society as we know it, cannot exist.

It's a matter of practicality really. The amount of coin required to specially train even a small unit of soldiers meant to deal with the unthinkable would be astronomical. For each soldier would need to have their own specialized field in order to cover the weaknesses of their fellows. And while the temples could certainly train up a unit of paladins and clerics to deal with the dangerous unknown, even they would fall short to what an adventurer, especially an experienced one is capable of.

Adventurers, compared to anyone trained by government or temple have two distinct advantages.

The first, is that they are beholden to no governing body or temple for the most part. While they can be pressed into service, both willingly and otherwise, adventurers travel where they wish. This means they will travel to places that a ruling body will not think to send their own, either because it's too far out, or too costly or they see no reason to do so. Not only does this give an adventurer a wider breadth of experience, but when one hires an adventurer they are rarely paying the cost for the adventurer to come to them.

The second, is that adventurers are by nature very curious folks. At times to the detriment of their physical and mental health. However, that means there are problems (and solutions) that are not off limits to them to explore. If there is a problem, there will be some sort of adventurer group who will poke their nose into it. Again, this gives them experience that no one else will have. There is also the pesky issue of noble and clergy alike snubbing certain skills because they are 'shady' or 'unseemly', which further narrows the skill sets of their own people.

For those two reasons, adventurers are uniquely equipped to keep the Empire secure in a way the military is just not capable of doing without draining the treasury dry. Whether or not one agrees in having unaffiliated sell-swords wander the lands, one cannot deny that without their existence any nation would have difficulty keeping their lands secure.

Day 401

So here’s an update on something I haven’t talked about in a long while and that is Chimera Academy.

The comic, not the role play.

Because comics are such a visual medium, my priority for, what feels like forever, has been getting the character descriptions out. By the way, for some weird reason, I forgot that because this is a school there would be a lot of characters.

There are so many characters…

Anyhow… because my priority was the character descriptions, I’ve been writing the character descriptions and leaving everything else blank in the character sheets. However, for all the students, I’m working backwards, I’m working on the character’s past and present history before writing the descriptions.

It means that all my students will be fully realized before my teachers and other adult figures. Which sounds strange, except I technically already have my adult character mostly figured out, their information is just sitting in another digital notebook waiting to be updated and transcribed. But the important part is, I knew about the adults when I wrote those descriptions. So I have something to work off of, and @wereah, knows these characters well enough that she has something to work with and bounce ideas off of.

That isn’t the case for my students, because I had originally made them for a role play, I only gave them bare basics since I didn’t know who Were-Ah would interact with. Fun fact, if I recall correctly Jayde Lockridge could have been the fourth member of the Chimera Academy main cast instead of Cael Eutis. I had given Were-Ah two choices and poor Cael’s life was never the same since.

The point is, I knew a lot more about characters that weren’t the students, that could inform how they looked. Whereas, I didn’t know much about the students, except for the ones that the quartet has interacted with quite a bit. So, I had to write their history, because their history would inform their looks.

It also ensures I don’t make really generic students. Generic students are fine for backgrounds, but less fine when your main characters have to interact with them.
