How to shelve the darkness
"How to shelve the darkness", a review of Elzabe Zietsman in 'Routrip' at The Studio Theatre, Montecasino, 20 October at 3pm.
JUST me and the road map. Elzabe Zietsman in Routrip at the Studio Theatre, Montecasino this afternoon, 20 October 2024. Photograph courtesy theatrescenecpt.co.za These days, with the ADHD-conducive ubiquity of social media and messages that can appear in your face in a multitude of ways, the cultural imperative has become a shadow of its former self. That imperative which used to say: ‘There’s…

First screenshots from Gloria!, first upcoming fiilm co–written and directed by Margherita Vicario. It will premiere on February 2024 and is pending for the Golden Bear of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
It is late 18th century in Venice, and in a convent school for girls Teresa, a girl with prophetic gifts, joins forces with some amazing music-makers. They create a new kind of music that is pop, bright and bold, and challenge the ancient and rigid system.

I just watched such an amazing movie at berlinale: young hearts.
it's a coming of age/coming out story. but the focus is not on older teens or young adults like it's usually the case, rather on kids at the beginning of puberty, around 13 years old. The clumsy "Do you wanna go out with me? yes/no/maybe" phase . Little touches, little kisses, first tries at romance and relationships. and the film really succeeds in capturing these tender first feelings, how wonderful and overwhelming they are, even more so if the person you fall in love with happens to be a boy like yourself.
the movie is set in summer which lends it a certain fleeting ease, sometimes nostalgia. its tone is sweet, even lighthearted, but not without depth. the child actors are really amazing & have great chemistry.
there was a q&a afterwards with the director (seems to be a really likeable, kind person) and he said he basically wanted to make a kid's movie about gay feelings/coming out, something also an 8-year-old could watch. because there are barely any movies out there which attempt to tell these very first queer love stories. and he's so right and it was healing for me to watch the main character getting braver about his affection for the new boy in class scene by scene. it was healing because it's really rare to see love between men/boys depicted as something so innocent and tender as a very first romance. especially now when there is this conservative push to (again) understand queerness as sth inherently sexual if not perverted.
when young hearts hits theatres i hope it gets at least a bit of success. I mean it's rather a small european movie, also feels a bit slice of life genre-wise, certainly no grand blockbuster with big names in it. so I don't know how many people it will reach. but should you have the chance to watch it I highly recommend it it's so feel-good, even reparative

Watched 2 strangely alluring films tonight (Titane and Triangle of Sadness). I've been on a film slump in the past 5 years, I am not at all updated on mainstream cinema so this is great.
Ranking the 4 movies I watched in the past few days:
4. Titane
3. Triangle of Sadness
2. Quo Vadis, Aida?
1. The Father

Have you noticed how all reports from cannes film festival are mainly focused on Americans?
Where are French? Where is European cinematography? Its literally their festival and Americans have to make it about themselves like everything else.
Everyone is doing something, making movies, contributing to industry. Stop painting it like it's only important and worthy of praise if it is american. Most Europeans prefer their own movies and series anyway.
we love and support everyone, dont get me wrong. but dont forget to shine the spotlight on all the creators, dont forget to give attnetion to all the stories being told.
