just finished watching society of the snow and i have so many thoughts. it is such a poignant, beautiful and important film. a film about human resilience, spirit, humanity and above all friendship. there’s so many films of this genre but i don’t remember seeing any whose gaze was this humanistic and respectful. not once for the entirety of two hours and twenty minutes of it do you feel it judging or glamourising its characters. and there’s so many profound moments. especially the scene with arturo and numa, when the former tells the latter that he has never been more faithful than this exact moment and he hasn’t placed his faith in God but all his friends that are helping him survive. and then there’s another moment when a character says he sees no point of following a God that tells him what to do at home but said nothing about how to survive on a mountain. these scene may sound bleak, but the beauty of the film lies in the radical hope they all possessed. even the ones who knew they weren’t going to make it but they hoped that their friends would. that at least one of them would survive.

and as numa said, “there’s no greater love than to give one’s life for friends”.

the world is bleak and there may not be much, but there are friends. there is community. there is humanity. there is hope.

More and more I’m convinced that the international movie category in the Oscars is just made so European movies can have a chance against American movies. Because they can’t line the academy voters pockets as much as American studios, but they can pay more than Latin American, African or Asian movies in general. Yes, I am bitter Society of the snow didn’t win. The only great thing about it was Jonathan Glazer speech. That stuff was king shit. Calling out the occupation in Palestine 🇵🇸 was a king kind of move !

It makes me so happy that Society of the Snow tells the story with so much respect towards survivors and even those who didn’t make it. It’s beautiful that families could have some sort of closure with it. Every actor gave their all and involved themselves so much in the story, truly a movie with so much heart.

As a latin american it makes me happy that Bayona took care of telling the story with actors with a rioplatense accent, like the survivors. This story had to be told that way: with respect, realness and love.

I am hoping it wins the Oscar for best international movie, imo, it should’ve been nominated for best film period.

Watching the Goya Awards has me emotional. Matias Recalt is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Fuck yeah! He was excellent. I think his acting stood out, even more than Enzo (sorry), though Numa will always have my heart. So happy for Bayona and the entire cast. Everyone did such an amazing job❤️
