Eric Kaufmann - A Simulated Counter-Culture

Eric Kaufmann: You know, women are more likely, in general, to back whatever is the hegemonic community norm. When it was religion, they were more conservative. And they were. I mean, freshman undergrads in 1970, the females were more conservative than the men by a little bit.

But since 2004, it started moving the other way, and now it's, there's quite a big gap and women are a lot more to the left. And I think they're just reflecting the dominant messages that they're getting in institutional settings. Whereas the boys are a bit more rebellious and have always been more contrarian in a way, rebellious, and I think they're getting more from the internet that's countering what they're receiving in school, university, corporations, so on.

Mike Nayna: If you follow that line of thinking, the purple-haired woke woman is the Bible-basher of the 50s in some sense.

Kaufmann: Yeah, like, an extreme version of the communal values. Like, it's almost like if you're in a Muslim society or a Christian society, the religious fundamentalist exemplifies communal values. Everyone's a pious Muslim, they're a fundamentalist. It's tough to argue against them, but they're exemplifying the values of the system. And I'd say probably, that's what these blue-haired people are doing. And they're just exemplifying the values that everyone should have in the system.

Nayna: I think in the first-person experience is, they are countercultural in some ways.

Kaufmann: They think they're countercultural.

Nayna: They think they're countercultural, and it's a really weird paradoxical thing.

Kaufmann: But this whole thing, you know, it requires a sort of artificial reality. Like, it's always 1933 with Hitler about to rise to power, or we're always back in 1950s Alabama, you know. Or one step away from slipping back into it.

So, by sort of ginning up this artificial atmosphere of white supremacy or misogyny or whatever it is, against that backdrop and that sort of fabricated and invented, sort of establishment, you're a rebel, right?

But the reality is of course, yes, you know, this is just a matter of providing a backstory for what is effectively an elite actor in a way. Or a representative of an elite value system.

Suddenly, everywhere you look, the Jews are disappearing.

You feel it like a slow moving pressure system, an anxiety of exclusion and downward mobility. Maybe you first noticed it at your workplace. Or maybe it hit when you or your children applied to college or graduate school. It could have been something as simple as opening up the Netflix splash page. It’s gauche to count but you can’t help yourself: In academia, Hollywood, Washington, even in New York City—anywhere American Jews once made their mark—our influence is in steep decline.

For many Jews, the first instinct is to look inward: We blame intermarriage, assimilation, the loss of the immigrant work ethic. This is, of course, a cope. Because the most significant cause of the decline isn’t Jews themselves, but that American liberalism, our civic religion, has turned on us. Where Jewish success was once upheld as a sign of America’s strength and progress over its prejudices, Jewish “overrepresentation” is again something to be solved, not celebrated.

A tenure-track humanities professor at a prestigious public university tells of the finalists for her department’s next graduate school cohort. Of the 20 or so candidates, four to five are Jews. One is a working-class yeshivish applicant with an incredible backstory and even better recommendations. He is passed over for not being “diverse” enough. Of course our professor doesn’t complain— her own tenure is at risk. In the end, not a single Jew is offered admission.

Another Jewish professor applies to work in the UC system. In his mandatory diversity statement, which he describes as “the most shameful piece of writing I’ve ever done,” his sole aim is to convey the impression that he hopes to be the last Jewish man they ever hire. He still doesn’t get the job.

And why would he? Using YouGov data, Eric Kaufmann finds that just 4% of elite American academics under 30 are Jewish (compared to 21% of boomers). The steep decline of Jewish editors at the Harvard Law Review (down roughly 50% in less than 10 years) could be the subject of its own law review article.

The same pattern holds across America’s elite institutions: a slow-moving downward trend from the 1990s to the mid-2010s—likely due to all sorts of normal sociological factors—and then a purge so sweeping and dramatic you almost wonder who sent out the secret memo.

Museum boards now diversify by getting Jews to resign. A well-respected Jewish curator at the Guggenheim is purged after she puts on a Basquiat show. At the Art Institute of Chicago, even the nice Jewish lady volunteers are terminated for having the wrong ethnic background. There’s an entire cottage industry of summer programs and fellowships and postdocs that are now off-limits to Jews.

In 2014 there were 16-20 Jewish artists featured at the Whitney Biennial. After a very public campaign against a Jewish board member with ties to the Israeli defense establishment, the curators got the message. The 2022 biennial featured just 1-2 Jews.

From 2010 through 2019 there were at least three Jews in every MacArthur Fellowship class, sometimes as many as five or six. The Forward would write effusive columns celebrating the year’s Jewish geniuses. Since 2020, just 0-1 Jews a year have been awarded grants. The Forward hasn’t bothered to take note.

Today American Jews watch with Solomonic bemusement as Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard is argued before the Supreme Court. On some level we sympathize with the Asian American plaintiffs, who are suing Harvard for using admissions criteria that discriminate against them on the basis of their race. Maybe they really are the new Jews, facing the same barriers—insidious racism, personality scores, rural geographic preferences—that we once did.

On the other hand, fancying ourselves to be high caste members of a beneficent elite, we pretend not to notice that “diversity, equity, and inclusion” is a cudgel used to exclude certain groups of Americans, including Asians and Jews. Desperate to maintain their waning status within the liberal coalition, Jewish communal organizations ignore these contradictions. Once a protector of specifically Jewish interests but now secure in its new role as handmaiden to power, the Anti-Defamation League filed an amicus brief—in support of Harvard.

In the 1940s, the ADL took a different tack. For decades unofficial quotas at most Ivy League universities limited Jews to around 10% of the student body, despite evermore qualified Jewish applicants. Jewish organizations made it their mission to break this invisible barrier and by the end of the 1950s the quotas were a dead letter. The long summer of American Jewish success had begun.

But the seasons always change. A FIRE/Yougov survey found that self-identified Jews now number just 7% of Ivy League students, compared to 10% during the height of the antisemitic quotas.

In his gripping podcast��Gatecrashers, about the history of Jews in the Ivy League, Mark Oppenheimer describes the troubled state of Jewish campus life. Harvard has gone from being 25% Jewish in the 1990s and 2000s to under 10% today. “In theory it could be the case that Jews are the same percentage of whites at Harvard as they always were,” he explains. “But Harvard has not shrunk the number of athletes it admits […] and they’ve kept their geographical diversity. So if you’re a Jewish kid who’s not an athlete and not a legacy and not from Wyoming … then there’s not much room left for you.”

According to the Hillel College Guide, Penn’s Jewish population declined from 26% in 2015 to 17% in 2021; NYU’s dropped from 24% to 13%. Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell have seen smaller but significant declines (Brown and Dartmouth, with different institutional priorities, are by all accounts happy exceptions).

Data from the Yale Chaplain’s Office—which appears to be the only Ivy League university that still tracks religious affiliation—shows a similar trend: The Jewish population went from 19.9% in the 2000s to 16.4% in the 2010s. A couple of years ago, the school’s chaplain told Meir Chaim Posner, the Chabad rabbi at Yale, that around 11% of Yale undergraduates were Jewish. “It’s dropped slightly since then,” Rabbi Posner told me in November.

“The university has decided that DEI is the overarching principle of admissions,” one Hillel director told me. “There’s a general consensus that it’s more difficult for Jewish students to get into top tier schools.” Nor is this difficulty confined to secular Jews—the modern Orthodox population has also crashed. A college counselor at a top Jewish day school reports that as universities have revamped enrollment and gone test-optional, the number of Orthodox students has decreased. “Every year has been harder,” he said. “Our ability to thoughtfully predict the likelihood of admission has gone way down.”

An uneasy omertà settles in. The Ivies skip college nights at Jewish day schools they visited for decades. At Penn there used to be two daily minyans—now there’s one. There are hushed whispers that if current trends hold, some of these colleges might no longer be able to support an Orthodox community at all.

The 1999 Hillel College Guide now reads like a map to a lost civilization. Harvard and Yale have 1,500 Jewish undergrads apiece. There are 5,000 Jewish students and grad students at Columbia, 6,000 at Penn, 14,000 at NYU. It’s hard to imagine that as recently as 2008, articles were being written about the “race” to attract Jewish students.

What was normal less than two decades ago sounds like a siren call from a distant golden age. To even suggest that a 15%-20% Jewish undergraduate student body might be acceptable in a country in which Jews make up 2.4% of the total population is anathema in today’s liberal society.

In New York—the seat of American Jewish political power—there are almost no Jews left in power. A decade ago the city had five Jewish congressmen, a Jewish mayor, two Jewish borough presidents, and 14 Jewish City Council members. Today just two congressmen and a single borough president remain. Only six Jews now sit on the 51-person City Council. Shelly Silver, the corrupt Orthodox former State Assembly leader, was replaced by Yuh-Line Niou, a pro-BDS “progressive” whose oligarch father was featured in the Panama Papers. Not even the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is recognizably Jewish anymore.

“What you have is a lack of identity of Jews as Jews,” the Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told The Washington Post. “And they don’t have the power to ensure that there’s more than one Jewish congressman. It’s astounding.”

Younger Jews are being excluded from the liberal organizations their parents and grandparents helped create. Identitarian meltdowns roil the progressive world. The Women’s March, the ACLU, and the SPLC all get rid of Jewish leadership. There will be no more “Mighty Iras” in our lifetime. Not even the Jewish president of the Audubon Society is safe.

There are still powerful Jews in Washington—neo-Nazis on Twitter like to post photos of Biden’s cabinet—but the influence is waning. Is it a coincidence that in the U.S. Senate (a handsy group of old men if ever there was one) the only senator forced to resign during the #MeToo panic happened to be Jewish? Or that activists pushed for Dianne Feinstein’s resignation for the explicit reason that she be replaced by someone who isn’t Jewish?

Of the 114 federal judges appointed by Joe Biden (as of this writing), just 8-9 appear to be Jewish—in a field that’s historically been at least 20% Jewish. Liberals worship Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a magical Jewish Teletubby, but they wouldn’t dare nominate another “white woman” to the highest court anytime soon. We are back to the single Jewish seat on the court.

Apparently Jews have so much power and influence that the highest-ranking Jewish senator in history finds it too politically difficult to hire a 22-year-old version of himself. There were at least 15 Jews on Chuck Schumer’s staff of 64 in 2014. After facing pressure for not being diverse enough, and despite an enlarged staff of 89, he can no longer make a minyan.

In Los Angeles—America’s second most Jewish city—there are now just two Jewish City Council members, down from six in 2000. In last year’s infamous dustup, Nury Martinez, the sharp-tongued council president, had despicable things to say about Black people, Oaxacans, even Armenians—but Jews were barely a footnote. “Judíos cut their deal with South LA,” she said. “They are gonna screw everybody else.”

Speaking of LA, a decade ago there were 22 Jews on The Hollywood Reporter’s annual list of the Top 50 Showrunners. In 2022, that’s down to 13. Other than the half-Jewish (and already famous) Maggie Gyllenhaal, you’d have to go back six years to find a single Jew on Variety’s annual list of 10 Directors to Watch.

Thanks to the odious new Hollywood house style that requires a detailed ethnic and racial classification at the top of all capsule biographies, we can see just how many self-identified Jews are in the Sundance writers and directors labs, or the NBC, Paramount, and Disney writers and apprenticeship programs—it is zero. It seems not being Jewish is actually a primary qualification. So much for Jewish control of Hollywood.

The decline is so rapid—and the golden age so close to living memory—it’s a running joke. On the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David meets with a group of younger non-Jewish studio executives to convince them to cast a Mexican American girl as Young Larry’s Jewish love interest. On Reboot, Steve Levitan’s Hulu show, an old guard of Jewish sitcom writers clash uncomfortably with their younger and woker—and noticeably non-Jewish—colleagues.

Not even Hollywood’s Jewish history belongs to Jews anymore. The new Academy Museum, dedicated to “radical inclusivity” and paid for with Haim Saban’s Jewish money, couldn’t bring itself to include Hollywood’s Jewish founders. In Babylon, Damian Chazelle’s epic flop about Hollywood’s golden age, the director follows an ahistorical Mexican studio executive and an Asian American lesbian rather than any of the very real Jewish moguls or screenwriters or directors of the era. What’s telling isn’t that Chazelle ignored Jews (anyone can do that) but that not a single reviewer bothered to notice this “erasure.” The culture has moved on.

What remains of Jewish Hollywood lives on borrowed time. Spielberg can make his Fabelmans, James Gray his Armageddon Time, but only because these are nostalgia pieces. Soon there will be no more RBG’s, no more Spielbergs, just a few off-brand Seinfelds doing a heritage act. There will certainly never be another Larry King or Andy Borowitz, Jews of such astounding mediocrity you wonder what was in the water.

In the 1950s, after Stalin’s death, after the purges, the Politburo turned to another pressing issue: the overrepresentation of Jews in Soviet life. Proportional representation (3% Tajik! 2% Uzbek! 12% Ukrainian!) became official policy, and the next decade saw the quick erosion of the Jewish nomenklatura. Soviet Jews—who had disproportionately contributed to and benefited from the building of the communist state—had outlived their usefulness.

A 1964 New York Times article explained that because Soviet republics assigned a certain number of students “preferential admission” based on their nationalities, other nationalities—aka Jews—were excluded. “A higher percentage of Jewish students was permitted to attend universities in Czarist Russia than is enrolled in the USSR today,” an outraged American Jewish Congress declared. “The 8.2% of university graduates who are Jews contrasts sharply with the present Jewish university enrollment of 3.22%.”

As true believers in the postwar liberal project, American Jews spent decades advocating for tolerance and equality of opportunity, not least because we were the prime beneficiaries. The ADL didn’t fight the quotas in the 1950s so Jews could matriculate in proportion to their percentage of the population. But there’s a tension between meritocracy and representation. The new DEI regime treats any disparity between groups as evidence of unfair advantage—and yet we’re supposed to think it’s a coincidence that Jewish representation plummets at the exact moment America frantically pushes to racially rebalance all high-status industries.

Because what is framed as a backlash against America’s “white” centers of power is in many cases a clever sleight of hand. Jews are being disproportionately purged from liberal institutions because Jews disproportionately exist within those institutions.

When activists and journalists and executives talk about how Broadway or NPR or publishing is “too white,” what they really mean is “too Jewish.” When The New York Times says it wants to make its internal demographics look more like New York City’s (excepting the Hasidim, of course), what this means is “fewer Jews.” Twenty years ago, if Pat Robertson spoke along these lines—making the same complaints about the same people and industries and institutions—there would have been a rush to condemn it as antisemitic. Today it passes for social justice.

In the 1960s and ’70s, facing hard barriers to their professional advancement, Soviet Jews lost the faith. The children and the grandchildren of the revolution tried to emigrate. When the authorities wouldn’t let them, American Jews rallied to their cause, created brand-new communal organizations, petitioned Congress, rallied thousands-strong outside the United Nations. Ours was a community confident in its power and confident in its future.

Asian Americans have the dignity of looking at admissions practices and demanding fair representation. The Jews, as ever, are a people apart. From civil rights to Vietnam to the spectacular bounty of their cultural and political achievements, liberal Jewish boomers always managed to be on the right side of history. It is a supreme irony that they’ve helped empower a movement that now places their children and grandchildren on the wrong side.

If Putin or Orban reduced their universities’ Jewish populations by 50%, the ADL would be howling. But Harvard and Yale can magically lose nearly half their Jewish students in less than a decade and we’ll take it on the chin. That this is occurring with the full acquiescence of a terrified liberal Jewish establishment should tell you just how much power Jews in America still have.

In the months leading up to the November 5 presidential election, the wide-eyed members of the Establishment Media kept insisting that Donald Trump was a white supremacist, fascist, sexist, totalitarian, misogynist racist, Hitler, and worse.

As far as one can remember, no other man or woman – domestic or foreign – had so much vitriol poured on his or her head as Donald Trump… not even close. As far as the media were concerned, Donald Trump, was (and still is) public enemy number one.

Unprecedented in co-ordination and scope, the media’s relentless attacks on Trump constituted the most vicious character assassination campaign in memory, if not in the whole history of American politics. Those who orchestrated and carried out this campaign must have been aware that this level of instigated hatred would likely provoke some individuals to carry out actual assassination attempts. As we have all seen, they got their wish in the end.

That many on the Left wanted Trump dead became glaringly obvious from the multitude of postings on social media and elsewhere bemoaning the fact that the assassin’s shot did not hit the target. According to the research conducted by Professor Eric Kaufmann, a third of Democratic voters wished the shooter’s bullet had not missed Trump’s head. Among the progressives the number was an astounding 71 percent!

After everything that has been said and done to him, the fact that Trump is still alive today is, indeed, a kind of miracle.

In a truly paradoxical turn – after months of being relentlessly maligned, defamed, and denigrated – Donald Trump was named the 2024 Person of the Year last week by Time magazine, one of the premier organs of elite think.

One wonders how could the Time editors in good conscience name Trump the Person of the Year after everything that has been said of him? Here are some questions for them:

Are you not ashamed to name a fascist, sexist, and white supremacist the Person of the Year? Are you not embarrassed to bestow this grand designation upon a Hitler-like figure?

And here is something else they could ponder. If Donald Trump is a racist, as they so earnestly insisted, how is it that he received record levels of the Latino and Black vote?

Some of these events are my own interpretation and also focus on my OCs. This is more for my own entertainment than to anything else.

1940 -

• In Los Angeles, Howard Stark (23) demonstrates the properties of Vibranium, a metal found by Stark Industries in Africa. Later that night, Stark is attacked by HYDRA assassins.

• He then accepts Colonel Chester Phillips' proposal to join the Strategic Scientific Reserve.

• Far from his creator, Torch began to gain a reputation as a defender of justice.

• After Hitler's rise to power, Max Eisenhardt (7) and his family fled to Poland, where they were captured during the German invasion of Poland and sent to the Ghetto.

• Eventually they managed to escape, only to be betrayed and captured again.

• His family was executed and buried in a mass grave, but Max survived, possibly due to the manifestation of his powers. He ends up being captured once again and sent to Auschwitz.

• At her work in Bletchley Park, England, Peggy Carter's (19) received a letter with a offer to work as an SOE field agent, which she accepted.

• She then enlists in the British counter-intelligence and security agency MI5 and calls off her wedding. As an MI5 agent, Carter is loaned to the American agency Strategic Scientific Reserve, becoming an advisor.

• At Castle Kaufmann in the Bavarian Alps, Abraham Erskine injects Johann Schmidt with his Super Soldier Serum, but the serum horribly transforms Schmidt, transforming him into the Red Skull.

• At some point, Abraham Erskine is rescued by Peggy Carter, who has infiltrated the complex disguised as a maid. Carter takes Erskine to the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) so he can produce America's Super Soldier with the help of Howard Stark.

• Fred Raymond's house was invaded by a costumed criminal called the Asbestos Lady and her gang, who intended to force Raymond to develop new means by which she could use asbestos for crime.

• The Torch, who was watching the Raymonds' house, suspecting that the criminal would come into contact with such a notable authority on asbestos, broke in and captured the gang.

• The Asbestos Lady, however, escaped. Learning about Thomas's (10) immunity to fire, Torch set out, deciding to keep an eye on the Raymond family in case they were terrorized by the Asbestos Lady again.

1941 -

• (EVENT - Castle Rock Tower Destruction)

• Johann Schmidt, Discovering that Tønsberg, Norway, is the resting place of the Tesseract, leads a group of soldiers there in search of it. He orders his men to search the city, then arrives at Castle Rock Tower, finding a Church Guardian guarding it.

• Schmidt kills him and orders his men to open fire on the city after finding the Tesseract. He refers to it as "the jewel of Odin's Treasure Room" before taking it for himself.

• In the summer, Nora Jones' health worsened and she died, while Thomas Raymond's (11) powers began to manifest themselves in the ability to generate flames, but the boy had little control.

• When the Torch came to visit them unannounced, Fred Raymomd kicked the Torch before his son could see him and blamed him for being somehow responsible for his son's condition.

• Torch told Raymond that he could teach Thomas how to control his flames and managed to convince him to let Thomas train with him. After that, Torch became the boy's guardian, who was renamed Toro; so the two became a crime-fighting duo.

• While growing up on the streets of London, Eric Brooks (12) encountered veteran American vampire hunter Jamal Afari and saved him from being killed by vampires.

• Afari soon learned about Eric and his origins and decided to take him under his wing, becoming his mentor and adoptive father and helping him control his powers.

• He taught Eric everything he knew about hunting, fighting, and killing vampires.

• December 7 - The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor leads the United States of America to enter World War II.

• President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt declares that the United States will build fifty thousand planes to combat the armies of Hirohito and Adolf Hitler.

• Stark Industries begins producing planes for the war effort after the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Howard Stark's innovations earned him a spot on the Manhattan Project.

• Steve Rogers (21) visits the US Recruiting and Induction Center in New York, but is classified 4F and rejected from service. He goes on to be rejected four more times in four different cities.

• The Strategic Scientific Reserve team in New York City completes the Renaissance Chamber Project. Howard Stark comments that it should be called the Brooklyn Project in response to J. Robert Oppenheimer's work at Los Alamos.

• At Camp Lehigh, New Jersey, Abraham Erskine rejects candidates selected by Chester Phillips for the Renaissance Project.

• Clara Creed (121) tells Tereza Márquez (126) OCs about the army recruiting "freaks" and suggests she join. She herself moves into a hidden shelter for mutants, preferring not to get involved in the conflict.

1942 -

• Steve Rogers (22) goes to a recruiting office in New York City but is turned away due to his numerous health problems.

• Tereza Márquez (127), Victor Creed (123) and James Howlett (57) go to the World Exhibition of Tomorrow. Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes (17) are also present. They all witness Howard Stark's presentation about a possible flying car.

• During the performance, Rogers goes to another recruiting office and is witnessed by Abraham Erskine, who asks him if he wants to kill Nazis. Steve responds that he doesn't want to kill anyone and that he doesn't like bullies.

• This impresses Erskine, who offers him a chance at military service through the Renaissance Project.

• Johann Schmidt and Arnim Zola experiment with the Tesseract inside HYDRA headquarters. Zola notes that his discoveries will change the war.

• At Camp Lehigh, New Jersey, Steve Rogers and several other volunteers begin their training under the supervision of Erskine, Peggy Carter (21), and Colonel Chester Phillips.

• Creed, Márquez and Howlett went to war, joining a special division of mutants, or "freaks" as they were called.

• At some point, Tereza was taken away from Creed and Howlett and chosen as a possible candidate for the Rebirth Project because of her powers. However, she was soon discarded because she was a black and hispanic woman.

• Dr. Cornelius Truett decided to keep her and the feral men close, wanting to study their mutations.

• At Camp Lehigh, while Rogers was doing push-ups with the other recruits, Chester Phillips threw a fake grenade at them; Steve threw himself at the grenade, ready to sacrifice his life to save his comrades.

• That night, Erskine explained the effects of the Super Soldier Serum to Rogers, telling him that he was chosen because of his good heart and compassion. Rogers promised Erskine that he will never change who he is and that he will continue to be a good man.

• Steve went through initial tests and met project member Cynthia Glass who was, unbeknownst to him, a Nazi spy. When the Nazis attempted to attack the secret base, Steve was protected by Tereza Márquez, Victor Creed and Dominic Fortune, a soldier of fortune who was originally a candidate for the project but was turned down due to his questionable lifestyle

• July 4th - The mutant Jason Wyngarde, later known as Mastermind, is born. (N)

• Rogers quickly takes control of the plane, calling Carter, telling her that her only option to stop the bombs is to shoot down the plane, due to the autopilot sending it to New York City.

• Carter plans a meeting with Rogers for next Saturday as he puts the plane on the ground, where it would remain frozen for nearly 40 years. Rogers' radio cuts out, which brings Carter to tears.

• The United States Armed Forces begin the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Es gibt überzeugende Argumente dafür, dass religiöser Glaube und religiöse Praxis einen großen Teil des Problems ausmachen und eine zunehmende Säkularisierung Teil der Lösung sein könnte. Wenn pronatale Ideologie auf moderne Technologie trifft Es gibt eine Reihe von Ursachen, die zur Explosion der menschlichen Bevölkerung in den letzten Jahrhunderten beigetragen haben. Die offensichtlichsten sind die Industrielle Revolution, die Grüne Revolution in der Landwirtschaft und damit verbundene Revolutionen in Medizin und Gesundheitsfürsorge. Diese Innovationen haben es möglich gemacht, mehr Kinder zu zeugen, die lange genug überleben, um selbst weitere Kinder zu zeugen. Aber Fortpflanzung ist nicht nur eine biologische Tatsache. Sie wird auch von kulturellen, sozialen und psychologischen Faktoren beeinflusst. Das Problem ist, dass die neuen Technologien der Moderne in einer Welt ankamen, die von vormodernen, pronatalen Weltanschauungen geprägt ist. Pronatale Ideologien funktionierten in früheren Jahrtausenden recht gut, als Kindersterblichkeit und Tod häufiger waren. Aber da wir bessere Medizin und Landwirtschaft entwickelt haben, machen pronatale Ideen keinen Sinn mehr. Religiöse Menschen bekommen im Durchschnitt mehr Kinder Die offensichtlichsten Quellen einer pronatalen Ideologie sind religiöser Natur. Lassen Sie es uns ganz deutlich sagen: Religiöse Menschen bekommen mehr Kinder. Dies gilt insbesondere für orthodoxe oder fundamentalistische Religionsformen, die tendenziell eine pronatale Ideologie haben. Auf diesen Punkt ging der britische Professor Eric Kaufmann bereits vor über zehn Jahren in seinem Buch „Sollen die Religiösen das Erdreich erben?“ ein . Ein paar Jahre später habe ich diesen Punkt in meiner eigenen Arbeit behandelt. Während Menschen ohne religiöse Bindung weltweit im Schnitt 1,6 Kinder pro Frau haben, sind es bei Christen durchschnittlich 2,6 und bei Muslimen 2,9 Kinder . Einige kleinere Religionsgruppen übertreffen diese Zahl sogar noch, wie etwa die Mormonen in den USA mit 3,4 Kindern pro Frau. Die grundlegende pronatale Idee der abrahamitischen Religionen lässt sich auf Gottes Gebot an Noah nach der Sintflut zurückführen: „Seid fruchtbar und mehret euch.“ Die pronatale Ausrichtung der Religion wurde durch einen kürzlich erschienenen Bericht von Lyman Stone in Christianity Today bestätigt . Darin heißt es, dass die Geburtenrate unter Personen, die regelmäßig religiöse Gottesdienste besuchen, höher ist. Stone veröffentlichte einen ähnlichen Bericht für das konservative Institute for Family Studies , in dem er argumentiert, dass die rasche Zunahme des Säkularismus in den Vereinigten Staaten zwar zu mehr Kindern führt, die US-Bevölkerung jedoch zurückgehen wird. Stone stellt richtig fest, dass nichtreligiöse Frauen weniger Kinder haben und dass konservativ religiöse Frauen tendenziell mehr Kinder haben als Frauen, die einem liberaleren Glauben angehören. Stone scheint zwar ein weiteres Bevölkerungswachstum zu wollen, doch sein Hauptanliegen ist es offenbar, vor dem religiösen Niedergang zu warnen. Eine Lösung, so schlussfolgert er, bestehe darin, dass religiöse Gemeinden Frauen ermutigen, mehr Kinder zu bekommen. Solche externen Botschaften können tatsächlich einen spürbaren Effekt haben: Eine Studie der Cornell University aus dem Jahr 2021 ergab, dass selbst das Leben in einem säkularen Land die Geburtenrate und die Familiengröße der dortigen religiösen Gläubigen reduziert.  Liberale Religion und Nicht-Religion können die Fortpflanzung verlangsamen Die Stärkung der Frauen ist der Schlüssel zur Bewältigung der ökologischen Krise und des Bevölkerungsbooms. Frauen mit Bildung, Verhütung und sinnvoller Karriere haben tendenziell weniger Kinder. Traditionelle patriarchalische religiöse Überzeugungen neigen dazu, Frauen unterzuordnen und auf das häusliche Leben zu beschränken. Deshalb könnte die Befreiung der Religion vom Patriarchat eine Möglichkeit sein, das Bevölkerungswachstum zu verlangsamen. Zu den wichtigsten Faktoren gehört hier die Befreiung der Sexualität von der Fortpflanzung. Der menschliche Sexualtrieb ist stark. Doch Religionen, die gegen Verhütung sind, weigern sich aktiv, die Fortpflanzung auch auf andere Weise einzuschränken. Angesichts des wachsenden Säkularismus lohnt es sich außerdem, die pronatale Weltsicht im weiteren Sinne zu überdenken. In einer Welt mit acht Milliarden Menschen (und es werden immer mehr) ist es einfach rücksichtslos, dem Gebot zu folgen, sich zu vermehren. Die biblische Grundlage dieser Idee muss kritisch hinterfragt werden. Es gab keine Sintflut, und die Menschheit entwickelte sich nicht aus Noahs Samen. Vielmehr entwickelten wir uns als eine Spezies unter vielen. Unsere großen Gehirne und unsere aufrechte Haltung ermöglichten es uns, Technologien, soziale Systeme und Ideologien zu entwickeln, die uns zur Eroberung der Erde führten. Es ist an der Zeit, neue Technologien, Sozialsysteme und Ideologien anzuwenden, die uns helfen, einen ökologischen Kollaps zu vermeiden. Das wichtigste technologische Werkzeug, das wir brauchen, haben wir bereits: die Empfängnisverhütung. Jetzt ist es an der Zeit, dass die sozialen Systeme und Ideologien aufholen und die Menschen sich dafür entscheiden, weniger Kinder zu bekommen.  Bevölkerungsrückgang ist nicht menschenfeindlich Das Ziel sollte nicht die aktive Entvölkerung sein. Einige radikale ökologische Theorien betrachten die menschliche Bevölkerung als Plage oder Krebs. Ein solcher menschenfeindlicher Ansatz kann zum sogenannten Ökofaschismus führen, einer Bewegung, die auch mit der weißen Vorherrschaft in Verbindung gebracht werden kann . Rassistische Menschenfeinde fördern die Beseitigung unerwünschter anderer. Das wichtigste technologische Werkzeug, das wir brauchen, haben wir bereits: die Empfängnisverhütung. Jetzt ist es an der Zeit, dass die sozialen Systeme und Ideologien aufholen und die Menschen sich dafür entscheiden, weniger Kinder zu bekommen. Aber wir können die menschliche Bevölkerung reduzieren, ohne unmenschlich zu sein oder die Menschheit auszulöschen. Vielmehr können wir das Bevölkerungswachstum verlangsamen, indem wir eine verantwortungsvolle Fortpflanzung fördern. Kritiker einer solchen Politik könnten sie als „geburtenfeindlich“ bezeichnen und versuchen, sie mit einem radikalen autoritären Programm wie Chinas früherer „Ein-Kind-Politik“ in Verbindung zu bringen. Aber es wäre falsch, die Menschen zu zwingen, keine Kinder mehr zu bekommen, und wir sollten auch nicht gegen Kinder und Geburten sein. Kinder sind etwas Wunderbares, und die Geburt ist eine geheimnisvolle Freude. Wir brauchen neue Generationen, die uns neue Ideen, Produktivität und soziale Unterstützung bieten. Leben jenseits der Fortpflanzung Doch das Leben besteht aus mehr als nur Kindern. Daran erinnern uns starke Formen des Feminismus und Humanismus. Frauen sollten die Freiheit haben, Künstlerinnen und Wissenschaftlerinnen, Lehrerinnen und Anwältinnen zu werden – oder Kinder zu bekommen, wenn sie das möchten. Doch die Möglichkeiten der Frauen werden durch pronatalistische, patriarchalische Ideologien eingeschränkt. Und die traditionelle Religion schließt oft andere, nicht familienorientierte Möglichkeiten aus, Sinn und Zweck zu finden. Humanisten müssen weiterhin pronatale und patriarchalische Religionsformen kritisieren und die Menschen daran erinnern, dass es Leben jenseits der Fortpflanzung gibt. Doch diese Kritik sollte sich nicht auf Vorwürfe und Schuldzuweisungen konzentrieren. Ein mürrischer Ökologe könnte mit dem Finger drohen und sagen, es sei unverantwortlich, mehr als zwei Kinder pro Paar zu haben. Doch Schimpfen und Schuldzuweisungen sind nicht so nützlich wie die Betonung der positiven Aspekte einer verringerten Fruchtbarkeit. Kinder sind toll, aber das Leben in einer Familie mit weniger oder gar keinen Kindern ist auch toll. Und auf lange Sicht bedeutet weniger Kinder ein besseres Leben für jeden von ihnen. Begriffserklärung: Der Begriff "pro-natal" bezieht sich auf eine Haltung, Politik oder Maßnahmen, die darauf abzielen, die Geburtenrate zu erhöhen oder die Geburt von Kindern zu fördern. Pro-natalistische Ansätze können beispielsweise durch finanzielle Anreize für Familien, steuerliche Vergünstigungen, Unterstützung bei der Kinderbetreuung oder durch positive gesellschaftliche Einstellungen zur Familie und Kinderzahl umgesetzt werden. Oft werden pro-natalistische Maßnahmen in Ländern ergriffen, in denen die Geburtenrate sinkt und die Bevölkerung altert, um demografischen Herausforderungen entgegenzuwirken. Is the era of woke censorship coming to an end on campus? The New York Times, Washington Post and CNN, among others, are heralding a new epoch in which university leaders stand up to snowflake students. While it’s encouraging that progressive legacy media outlets are nailing their free speech colours to the mast, these are counter-wavelets on the surface of a rising swell. Progressive illiberalism is not going anywhere because it is baked into the demography of tomorrow’s professors.

The Post cites a number of examples of institutional pushback, including Cornell’s refusal to implement a mandatory trigger warnings policy on academic freedom grounds. The paper and others note the encouraging defence of liberalism at Penn and Vanderbilt, along with Harvard’s new Steven Pinker-fronted Council on Academic Freedom, a group of over 50 faculty members who have robustly lined up against the culture of progressive conformity on campus. 

The sceptic in me says it’s one thing to strike down a trigger warning for an innocuous book which doesn’t touch sacred progressive beliefs. Penn’s current trial of controversial law professor Amy Wax for legal speech will be a far more important barometer of the new administrative liberalism. 

Still, the gradual emergence of a liberal centre willing to speak its name is cause for optimism. This came to broader attention with the Harper’s Letter in July 2020, continued with an Economist editorial in April 2021, and was followed by the first New York Times editorial in March 2022. Since then, the NYT has run a series of articles challenging campus conformity and has even been willing to court protests by running pieces sceptical of gender reassignment surgery. WaPo is late to the game, but confirms the trend.

Why the turnaround? Incentives explain a lot here. First, some of the energy in cancel culture has ebbed post-George Floyd, with the number of cancellation attempts dropping back to the (still high) levels of the mid-2010s (Figure 1). Second, the attacks on universities from the Right, encapsulated in Ron DeSantis’s campaigns against critical race theory and gender theory, permit liberals to use a “both sides” defence of liberalism. Conservative media attention also focuses centrist liberals on the need for internal reform rather than the prospect of further embarrassment. The Right has been a vital ingredient in the new liberalism.

But in the long run, liberalism is giving way to progressivism in elite spaces. The new cultural liberalism in the media reflects the views of senior staff members, and is opposed by affinity groups and young employees. That’s important, because surveys consistently find that “woke” values are twice as prevalent among younger Leftists than among older Leftists. Over 8 in 10 undergraduates at 150 leading US colleges say speakers who say BLM is a hate group or transgenderism is a mental disorder should not be permitted to speak on campus. What’s more, 7 in 10 think a professor who says something that students find offensive should be reported to their university. Young academics are twice as censorious as those over 50. These are the editorial teams and professoriate of tomorrow.

The steady erosion of free speech values is generational. Today’s young people are far more censorious than the young people of 1980 or even 2000, and they won’t grow out of it. While Zoomers are scared of being cancelled, figure 2 shows that they accept this risk as part of their political ideology.

Administrations’ occasional rebukes of student activists or adoption of high-minded academic freedom resolutions will make little difference to this speech climate. The situation in universities increasingly reflects a transformational current of illiberalism, guided by the generations who will one day form our elite.
