If you recall, a little while ago I manually scraped data regarding popular LotR ships from Ao3 using an extremely rough methodology. I had a request for the data, so what the heck, here you go.

Now, these numbers are ridiculously rough. In fact, you might even say they're bad. The first 10 are approximately correct. But, as explained in that link, every group of 10 after that is undercounted by more and more because I excluded fics from my search that contained the ships already on the list. Also, anything tagged in the Hobbit movies/book but not LotR was really, really undercounted.

Let this be a lesson in data sources! In fact, the best use of this data is to use it as a starting point for getting good data. Instead of checking every permutation of ships (like idk, Merry/Elrond) for proper numbers, you would start by checking the top 50 on this list. This is of course assuming you didn't have a better method of getting data out of Ao3 than using the work and tag searches like I've done here.

(The second-best use of this data is to go "lol, really?" which is what I assume/hope you're here for, because otherwise you're probably gonna be disappointed.)

(The third-best use of this data is to note that because the Hobbit movies came out 2012-14, right when Ao3 had achieved critical mass, it is much, much easier to find Hobbit-related fic on Ao3 than LotR, the films of which came out in 2001-03.)

For ships that intrigued me I've included the "actual" results in purple. But even those numbers are probably undercounting because some people don't use tags that map to the canonical tags.

Prank time: big brother Legolas x teen little sister reader x Rivendell brothers part 3.

Reader Chan turns a prank around on Legolas, Estel and the twins.

You are sitting at your desk doing your final math exam while Erestor sat on his own desk doing paper work.

You finished the last question and raised your hand while speaking “I finished my exam Erestor.” You said handing him the papers so he could grade them.

You nervously sat in your desk waiting for the results ‘If I don’t pass this math exam Dad will make me clean Dorwinion (his Elk.) for a month.’ You think to yourself closing your E/C and galaxy purple eyes until Erestor spoke “You are doing better in Math than last semester.” He said lifting up the paper to reveal a 99% lifting the heavy weight off your shoulders as excitement bubbled inside you “I don’t know what I was so afraid of about math. It’s easy once you get the hang of it.” You said collecting your text books and walking out of the library with Erestor “Your father will be pleased.” He said as you’re both walking to the throne room until you stopped and put your arm out to stop Erestor “This is one of their most saddest attempts yet.” You told Erestor gesturing to the huge puddle of clear glue on the floor as an idea formed.

You made an illusion of your father and lord Elrond stuck in the glue then made them sound like the real deals “Wow lady Y/N you really out done yourself.” Erestor said pocking one of the illusions with his finger as your amethyst purple and E/C spilt eyes twinkled in delight “The boys are coming hide.” You said pulling the even older elf with you behind a pillar “I beat Y/N is mad that we got her in our latest prank.” You heard Elladan say as your brother, Elrohir and Estel laughed making your glossed up lips smirk as you made the Thranduil illusion roar out “LEGOLAS GREENLEAF!” Then the Elrond illusion “ELROHIR! ELLADAN! ESTEL!” They yelled out making the older elves and human man pale “I don’t think that was Y/N.” Estel said in terror as they made their way to the pranks location to find their father’s struggling to get out of the glue to know avail “Father I/We can explain.” They said at the same time as the illusions gave them looks of death “I WILL THROTTLE YOU.” The Thranduil illusion yelled yanking one leg out of the glue then the other and began chasing the boys making them scream in terror but you and Erestor to laugh until you heard a familiar voice “What in the Valar is going on out here?” The real Thranduil asked with the real Elrond behind him until they saw the illusion Thranduil chasing the boys and the Elrond illusion still struggling to get out of the glue the boys screamed and landed in a pile ontop of each other in the glue and the illusions disappeared.

You and Erestor were laughing so hard you both fell from your hiding place and laughed your heads off catching the attention of Thranduil, Elrond and the boys “I’m going to throttle you.” Legolas yelled out trying to get up but he was stuck in the glue with the Rivendell brothers making you stick out your tongue “That’s what you get for trying to prank me.” You said getting up from the floor with Erestor who gave Thranduil all your final exam results which he looked through “Good job elen nin.” He said patting your head earning a smile from you “CAN I HAVE A TATTOO?” You asked making everyones eyes widen “umm we’ll see.” Thranduil said “Ohh Glorfindel! Haldir! Can you two get the boys out of this glue so they can clean it up?” He said walking to the throne room “Yes my Lord.” They said together with smirks on their faces “Next time we’re putting itching powder in her clothes.” Legolas whispered to his long time friends he had since before you were born “Ohh big brothers.” You said in a singe song voice “What now you little orc?” Elladan asked annoyedly until you, Glorfindel, Erestor and Haldir took out four cream pies from behind your backs and smashed them in their faces earning screams and you ran “Just you wait until we get out of here.” Estel yelled “I am going to teach you such a lesson you’ll wish you never heard the word prank.” Legolas yelled out shaking the cream and crust from his face as you laughed while running towards your chambers “I am so putting dye in their tubs.” You said laughing.

After Legolas, Estel and the twins got free from the glue they went to their rooms to bathe.

Once Legolas is in his bathing chambers he removes his clothes and puts them in the laundry basket then gets into the tub and starts washing the cream from his face after getting the cream off he lets out a startled yelp when he saw that his hands were green fearfully getting out of the tub he saw that his whole body was green.

He took deep breaths while counting to ten and yelled “Y/N!” He screamed out while Estel and the twins did the same with their bodies being Purple, pink and blue.

You couldn’t help but laugh as four voices bellowed out your name as you brushed your H/c fading to pink and purple hair out of the high ponytail.

Translation: elen nin-my star.

Bunniverse: Twenty Years of Nibbles

This Sunday (9-24-2023) is the 20th anniversary of the writing of the story which would be the glue that bound together several dozen stand alone stories into a cohesive universe, which would continue to grow for the next two decades. While the initial seeds were sown December 19th, 2001, and stories would be developed and written for almost two years, on a Wednesday evening, while chatting through the Yahoo! Groups board for the Haldir Lovers group, the idea manifested of Haldir having PTSD and getting through some of his anxiety with the help of a plush purple rabbit named Nibbles which was made for him by Elladan and Elrohir.

Named "The First Homely House, or, Attack of the Purple Plot Bunny", it was readers who would begin to refer to this story and subsequent related tales happening in Elrond's Valinor residence where he lived with Celebrian, her parents and brothers, their spouses and children, later adding Erestor and Glorfindel when they reached the shores of Alqualonde, and the youngest of Arwen and Aragorn's daughters, a marchwarden named Elodien who chooses the path of an Elf instead of the race of Men not as the titles the stories were given, but as the 'Purple Bunnies', a name that would later stick as The Purple Plot Bunnies for the series of fifty fics set in the Fourth Age, from September 119 to June 121. The series is PG13, with a handful of 'half-steps' written at higher ratings for in-between stories between consenting adult characters.

While it was actively being posted, many sites and groups at the time listed any sort of slash (m/m or f/f pairings) as forbidden or considered to merit a mature rating even if the content was below a teen level. Therefore, there are two different versions of about 1/3 of the stories in the series -- in the versions posted at gen and het sites and groups, Glorfindel and Erestor were only referenced as having traveled to Valinor at the same time, did not kiss or hold hands, and no mentions were made of their wedding bands or marriage. In versions posted to slash sites, relationships between Elrond and Celebrian as well as Galadriel and Celeborn were downplayed, and the above content with Glorfindel and Erestor was included. Most of the het/gen variations no longer exist; the slash variations were edited to include some of the content from the het/gen versions and additional content between 2007 and 2008, when they were all printed in what is considered the merged v.2 of all of the tales.

It was around that time that the universe became known as Bunniverse; prior to this, it was listed as The Purple Plot Bunny Universe, or, PPB-AU for short. The name Bunniverse was suggested by Smaug, since PPB-AU required explanation for new readers. Bunniverse has its own layer of confusion, with some potential readers believing that the name implies characters are all rabbits in the universe. A series of drawings by Smaug on this theme were done, which really only lead to more confusion, but fellowship buns were too adorable for anyone to be mad about it.

Three companion 'bunny' series are also part of the universe of what now numbers over 400 stories -- the Orange Plot Bunnies (also referred to as Erestory, where Erestor became the character of focus), the Pale Pink Plot Bunnies (concentrating on Glorfindel and Erestor adopting a child in Valinor, and featuring Fingon and Caranthir in prominent roles), and the Baby Blue Plot Bunnies (also known as Fluff'n'Stuff, taking place in early Third Age Rivendell, heavily focused on Glorfindel, and containing some of the heaviest religious and faith-based themes in Bunniverse). Of the three offshoots, only the Blue Bunnies have been completed at this time.
