i never know how to phrase it but something about the way beatles biographers and people in general view paul's reflexive placating persona and determination to smooth things over as manipulative or duplicitous and john's reflexive barbed persona and habit of lashing out as brave and subversive despite both being equally defensive mechanisms to shield themselves from the world that resulted in them saying things that weren't true says more about how we culturally view kindness or friendliness as inherently untrustworthy or flimsy and anger and carelessness as more believable as someone's true nature than it says about either of them in actuality

Give more. Give everything. Give blood.

El 30 de octubre de 2001, Equal Vision Records editó Give Blood, de Bane. El álbum significó un cambio importante respecto a los anteriores discos del quinteto de Massachussets: Holding This Moment, una recopilación de canciones escritas cuando el grupo todavía era un proyecto paralelo de Aaron Dalbec (guitarrista de Converge) e It All Comes Down To This, que no había cumplido con las expectativas que el grupo tenía puestas en él.

Quiero decir, no se trata solo de divertirse, se trata de toda una serie de desahogos y todo tipo de emociones, desde las mejores hasta las más tristes, pero no se trata de encajar en ningún molde preestablecido. No se trata de complacer a ningún grupo de chicos que quieren que suene como esta banda o tenga estos ideales o lo que sea. (…)Solo escribo sobre lo que pasa en mi cabeza y las cosas que veo a mi alrededor y eso es todo. Pero para nosotros, principalmente se trata de tocar en vivo. Cuando estamos allá arriba en vivo, sucede algo emocional a lo que todos somos adictos (Aaron Bedard, cantante de Bane, entrevistado por pastepunk.com)

Aunque contienen grandes canciones como “Count Me Out” o “Can We Start Again”, Holding This Moment y It All Comes Down To This resultan desparejos a la hora del balance final. Give Blood fue el disco que Bane siempre quiso hacer: un disco sólido y compacto de principio a fin que, por medio de verdaderos himnos como “Ante Up” o “Ali vs. Frazier I”, permitió consolidar a la banda como una de las más importantes de la escena hardcore luego de varios años sobre los escenarios (o sin ellos, como puede verse en esta increíble presentación en vivo).

Sí, solo escribir canciones honestas que no estén limitadas de ninguna manera, que no estén preformadas en ninguna estructura. Seguirá siendo hardcore porque todos somos chicos hardcore, y todos venimos de eso, y no lo vamos a perder. No buscamos estar en la radio ni nada por el estilo, simplemente no queremos limitarnos.

La música de Bane desafía cualquier concepto previo que uno pueda tener sobre una banda de hardcore, al expandir constantemente las fronteras del estilo hasta lograr un sonido propio que aunque contenga elementos reconocibles (por ejemplo, combinando -según su ex-baterista Nick Branigan- la crudeza de Judge con las partes más intrincadas de Burn), no remite directamente a ningún otro grupo. Punkbands.com iniciaba su reseña de The Note - el disco que sucedió a Give Blood- de la siguiente manera:

Hay una entrevista en la revista Law of Inertia de hace unos años donde se le pregunta a Matt Fox de Shai Hulud sobre la música emocional. Él dice: "Creo que tenemos mucho corazón, pero no creo que ninguna banda tenga más corazón que Bane. Definitivamente no son emo, pero cuando suben al escenario hay una energía emocional que no se encuentra en casi ninguna otra banda".

La etiqueta “emo” ha sido utilizada a lo largo de los años para clasificar artistas muy disímiles entre sí, desde Rites of Spring hasta Panic! At The Disco, pasando por Heroin, Sunny Day Real Estate, Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, etc. Sin lugar a dudas, Bane no es una banda emo. Sin embargo es innegable que es una banda de hardcore tremendamente emotiva, basado esto en algunos elementos fundamentales: por un lado, la riqueza de las texturas provistas por los acordes de octavas y el uso ocasional de de la dinámica quiet/loud (es decir, la alternancia entre partes tranquilas, cantadas/habladas y partes caóticas, gritadas). Por el otro, la voz de Aaron Bedard, tan distintiva e inconfundible como las de Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat) o Ray Cappo (Youth Of Today), sólo por nombrar un par; una voz que, sin ser grave y potente como la de Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) ni mucho menos virtuosa como la de Zoli Teglas (Ignite), es capaz de transmitir las emociones de una manera absolutamente convincente.

Aaron Bedard cuenta que en el momento de escribir las letras de Give Blood estaba en una etapa de su vida muy diferente a la de It All Comes Down To This:

Era un chico enojado y amargado. Tenía todas estas relaciones que se desmoronaron y  todas estas cosas con las que estaba en desacuerdo y en guerra. Ahora mi vida es solo estar en el camino. Ahora no tengo todas estos malditos conflictos en los que estoy lastimado por una chica, un chico, Dios o mis padres. No tengo todo eso en este momento. Todo lo que tengo es la van, y subirme al escenario, y darle todo lo que tengo. Dar más, dar todo, dar sangre. Si vas a hacer algo ¡da todo! De eso se trata el disco.

Ya en los primeros versos de “In Pieces”, la canción que da comienzo a Holding This Moment, Bedard decía que “la única forma en que uno realmente aprende las lecciones de la vida, es cuando ésta te golpea directamente en la cara”. Give Blood cierra con “Ali Vs. Frazier I”, título que hace referencia a la llamada "Pelea del siglo" entre Muhammad Ali y Joe Frazier.

“Ali vs. Frazier I” es una canción que sintetiza todo el concepto detrás de Give Blood y al mismo tiempo lo que es el hardcore: “Es tu decisión... Todo depende de vos”. Una canción que escucho cuando tengo la sensación de que las cosas no están bien en mi vida y necesito detenerme a repensar mis acciones. Una canción para enfrentar a mis demonios internos, para derribar a mi Goliat, para seguir dando pelea. Dar más, dar todo, dar sangre. Porque no hay nada que perder.

no thoughts head empty just these two socially inept fools finding family in one another. like yes you go you funky little death omens stole that one from a comment on the fic, so if you see this you know who you are, discover that family isn't only tied in blood.

bUT onto less mushy stuff: these two being shenaniganizers; tomfools. Bruce realized that Danny didn't actually know he was Bruce Wayne and instead of going "oh actually im bruce wayne" he went; "hrm... how long can i keep this going until he realizes...."

like. i think they deserve to be the sillies. just utter goobers the both of them. like, danny makes the wittiest side comments, dry quips, under his breath towards Bruce while they're out in public (Danny covering his face with a face mask) and Bruce is trying not to laugh. Meanwhile if Bruce makes one sly comment about someone to Danny, Danny's gonna collapse with laughter.

Bruce plays straightman in most of their bits, he has the best fucking poker face. But also I firmly believe he does actually enjoy Danny's puns. Look me in the eyes- look me in the eyes. Try and tell me that a man that willingly agrees to call a car "the batmobile" even after his eight year old ward grows up (thus negating the need to go along with his antics) doesn't enjoy a good, well-placed pun. Look me in the eyes and try to tell me that. That's right you can't.

He's gonna spit out a well-placed pun in the driest, most boring Batman Voice Ever one day while he's getting ready for patrol, and Danny's gonna fucking die of laughter. He's gonna lose his mind. Bruce is going to have a half-dead sickly teenager laughing his lungs out in the chair. That's a new core memory right there, every time Danny thinks about that he's gonna start giggling.

just!!! these two making each other laugh! That's so important to me. So so much. I nEED Danny to get Bruce to smile and laugh and I need Bruce to make Danny do the same. Danny's all snark and sass and Bruce is all deadpan and dry quips. Do you all see my vision.
