Doctor: All 5 children in this family are severely deficient in several food available vitamins and minerals.
Me: Oh, very small kids?
Doctor: Between 6 and 20 years old. Same deficiencies across the board. Have been going on for years now.
Me: Well, they're in this department, so I'm guessing all kids have some chronic condition.
Doctor: No, just the 8-yo. Nothing that affects her ability to eat or absorb nutrients.
Me: Maybe the family is vegan.
Doctor: All these things are bioavailable in both animal and plant based diets.
Me: Okay. So what is happening here?
Doctor: I'm prescribing more supplements.
Me: I meant more as a root cau--aaaand he's gone.
#stories from work#it could be an enzyme defect#you know#since that's the only way this deficiency shows up if their parents aren't feeding them literal bread and water#but sure#supplement away

The harm of drinking water while eating rice | Vitamin and mineral deficiencies | Travel & Marvel
Look at this kid who has developed the habit of swallowing rice with every mouthful of water while feeding her. So I can't but say the harm of drinking water while eating rice. Please everyone listen attentively and remember it will benefit you all. As soon as you hear what I am saying, you should match it with your child's or your own physical problem.
According to experts, drinking water repeatedly while eating causes problems in digestion. It is unscientific to drink water after or between meals. Gastric juice is secreted from the stomach after taking food to digest it. If water is consumed between meals or immediately after meals, this juice cannot complete the digestive process properly. It causes deficiency of nutrients in the body.
If it continues in this way, this type of child will suffer from gastritis as it grows day by day. Even drinking water right before eating or immediately after eating can cause digestive problems. Amish is usually eaten with rice. By drinking water after eating, the fat solution with the meat is removed from the body through water. This can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the long term. Also, enzymes such as amylase, protease, litase and etc. produced by the pancreas after eating help in digestion. If you drink water after eating rice, these enzymes cannot work properly.
It must be accepted, if you get stuck in your throat or hiccup while eating rice, you must drink water. But it is very little. Drink water long after meals unless it is a minor problem. It will improve your health. So drink water 30 minutes before eating, or 30 minutes after eating, even if you feel very thirsty.
Now think about what you are doing right?

Some notes under the snacking issue of Sebastian post caused my brain to weeoweeo it way too much than I expected, so well here are the continuing of topic xd
Sorry it's an essay because I can't write succinctly
1. How did the evil corporation(insert it’s name please) feed?
As far as I’m concerned, the shady corpo experimented on him to check/make people to able to breathe under water. Keeping him alive was quite crucial to success so I think they would provided him with proper amount of of food or at least the full nutrient content preparation. However, it changed when his body started to rapidly mutate, grow and evolve into what he’s now. The vast increase in his need of food and the fact that the gills didn’t develop very well, due to the scientists not very smart move - mixing his DNA with atmospheric oxygen snake and whale, caused the team to shrink his portion and gave him bare minimum in form of drip-feed… Auch
2. How didn’t he die from literally any nutrient deficiency sickness?
As I said it before I do not know the lore very much only basis. So forgive if I mess up some facts about the events. Going back to topic, after the event of beating the life out of his guards/special troops everyone left the lab immediately. Leaving everything behind including the rations, which were sent there for the staff to eat, all kind of medicine - pills, drops, syrups, injections etc. and whatever crops left( no idea if in the game is any „farm” but the transport would be extremely expensive so I think they would love to slash costs especially when there are vertical farms which are efficient, cheap and easy to maintain and during evacuation they could simply destroy it if nothing like this exists there). He simply gain most of crucial elements via all those supplements. Especially via drips which are the least painful without activating all digestive track. I like to think the reason why his extra arm is in the bandages is the fact that he often injects himself with various needles and his veins are in horrible state. At some point point all these supplements will end and it won’t end well for him, but not yet. That’s solves a bit the issue of lack of scurvy, nyctalopia and any other issues alike. Here’s the misery fish and his banana bag of lovely Zn and vit C

3. Another snacking issue
He is in constant state of hunger. No escape from it. The small human stomach ruthlessly dictates the size of his next snack and for how long he cannot eat, because it’s full, but it’s better to have at least one full than none. That could cause another big issue which is connected with the unconditional reflex - food in mouth equals activiting the synthesis of digestive enzymes and HCl in both tracks at the same time. Both are connected to one nervous system and the information goes to both, no matter if only one should start working. Not good situation, one belly is digesting itself, easy way to get ulcers or esophagitis, which not only are extremely painful but also deadly especially in his case with no health care or even chance to get any. He had to figure it out quite quickly how to make his eating as harmless as it’s possible. The easiest way I think would be simply some herby stomach drop, the one which highers the ph and stops HCl from being created. But I fear it works on human part- So he had to create strict timetable - when he eats, when he takes drops, when he can eat again. To keep the snake stomach in check and never letting it be fully empty and miraculously avoid the sinister autodigestive ideas of snake element. So his best friend is a tiny bottle of disgusting drops from a nurse office

4. How not to starve to death with body like that?
Dense soup. Maximum proteins in the smallest velocity and in easy to consume and digest way. It passes both stomachs faster because tough long chains are already broken into smaller ones so it can be faster absorbed and used. It’s also very easy to make and can contain many ingredients giving the biggest diversity in one sip. Still starves because it’s not enough, but there is no better way :”)

And no he wouldn't threaten anyone that he would add them to his soup. He was a human and he exactly knows there are too many weird fellas out there. No way he'll risk getting new traumatic event, he won't take it anymore-
The last thing is this two sentences:

Honestly I wasn't prepared to read something like this with straight face at 6AM. It wasn't in my weekly bingo card, but jup it made my day, thanks

Question from someone who has no experience with wine at all, only from seeing it on TV shows, but does getting tipsy/drunk actually make you blush? I've seen it in so many places like shows & comics, but never irl,so I have no idea.
Depends on the person! It’s very common in East Asians since we genetically have an enzyme deficiency that makes it so we don’t process alcohol as well, resulting in a flush (this is a very general, vague summary). It’s called “Asian glow”! Makes sense why anime/Asian cartoons use blush as a shorthand to show if someone’s been drinking
I personally only get red if I drink A LOT but also you can’t see it on me as well since I have darker skin, being mixed and all. But my girlfriend who is full East Asian gets red after like half a beer haha. I think it’s cute

How has taking estrogen impacted your mental health? I feel like it would fix me. But also I don't think it would work for me
hmm. this is a difficult to answer question due to how subjective that is.
in my case, my emotions have become more vivid. they feel deeper, which has lead to a great sense of a euphoria on upswings, as well as a new understanding of what emptiness means from my downswings. this, however, is mostly caused by something i have, called Cyclothymia, which some people call "Bipolar III" due to how similarly it impacts your mood. it's a cyclic depressive disorder, so depression is a medical constant for me (though medication makes it bearable). i can't really blame my new deep freaky sadness on the hormones specifically, that was more of a built in feature that i just barely got access to.
that being said, it's also helped significantly balance things out for me. i learned that i'd been deprived of a specific neuroprotectant enzyme called "allopregnanolone" which the body is able to make using, go figure, progesterone. when i started taking progesterone, my thoughts became much clearer, my irritability lessened, and there was a generally greater sense of self awareness in most aspects of my life. all bodies (even "male" ones) are supposed to start producing a specific amount of estrogen at the beginning of puberty. a deficiency in these chemicals is something that people with a menstrual cycle undergo in the week leading up to their period, most often causing depression, anxiety, and lack of focus. and wouldn't you know it, i started feeling depression, anxiety, and a lack of focus around the time i started puberty.
so there's a lot of things to know about it! but to summarize in a very succinct way, at least for my own personal case, my emotions now feel "realer".
hope that helps!

Yet another study showing Vitamin D deficiency coupled with acute covid severity. Maybe consider a supplement if you're going to be in covid high risk scenarios.
Abstract Background The vitamin D binding protein (DBP) plays a critical role in both innate and adaptive immune systems, participating in several clinical conditions, including coronavirus disease 2019 infection severity, and mortality rate. The study aimed to investigate the correlation between rs7041 and rs4588 polymorphisms in the DBP gene and Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) severity and mortality, in patients of Suez Canal University Hospitals in Ismailia, Egypt.
Methods A case-control study enrolled 220 individuals; 140 COVID-19 patients and 80 healthy controls. Serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and rs7041 and rs4588 polymorphisms of the DBP gene were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).
Results The study found that both groups had vitamin D deficiency, which was considerably lower in the COVID-19 patients group compared to controls. Among COVID-19 patients, there was a significant difference in vitamin D levels according to the disease severity indicating that vitamin D levels can be used as predictors of COVID-19 severity. Negative significant correlations between genetic variants rs4588 CA genotype and genetic variants rs7041 TT genotype and COVID-19 prevalence (p = 0.006 and 0.009 respectively) were proved. No significant correlations between all the genetic variants of both rs4588 and rs7041 and COVID-19 severity (p > 0.05). Positive significant correlations between both genetic variants rs4588 CA genotype and genetic variants rs7041 TG genotype and COVID-19 mortality (p = 0.029 and 0.031 respectively).
Conclusion vitamin D deficiency increased the severity of COVID-19. The DBP polymorphism correlated with vitamin COVID-19 prevalence and mortality.

Is it true that low calorie diets double enzymes in your body that make and store fats?
I had never even heard of this and it turns out that this idea is from studies on lipase activity from the 80s and 90s. It took me forever to finally find what appears to be a meta-analysis from this year and that's mostly discussing the pros and cons of lipid inhibitor drugs vs pancreatic stimulation drugs.
What these studies note is higher activity of certain lipid level enzymes in obese individuals during and after weight loss.
Different lipid enzymes do different things. The ones discussed in these studies are moreso involved in the breaking down of lipids (fats) and the problem with too much or too little is potential nutritional deficiencies.
There's a vague idea that they could affect weight loss, but we have other studies involving thousands of participants showing that drug intervention regulating these enzymes doesn't really do much.
Tl;dr not exactly and you don't have to worry about it
