Caregiver Emotions Headcanons (Inside Out 2)

No real spoilers for the movie, but I’ll still hide it under the cut until it’s been out longer.

Anxiety

She in incredibly protective, doing all she can to ensure you’re safe and happy. (And yes, she can be a little TOO protective at times, but she’s trying to get better about reigning herself in.)

She always has your regression gear with her and she has emergency regression hiding spots mapped out for every place you go.

She is a huge ball of energy and always up for playing with you.

If you’re a quieter, calmer regressor, she feels a little less confident in herself; but with the help of the other emotions, she’s getting better about relaxing, and she tries very hard to apply these calming techniques when she’s with you.

If you have panic attacks, Anxiety does absolutely everything she can to help you work through them, and she’s a source of immense comfort in the aftermath.

Embarrassment

He worries a LOT about whether he’s a good caregiver for you…

But when you need him, he steps up big time. All his doubts get put on the back burner the second you start crying or get scared of something.

He doesn’t feel comfortable giving you rules, but he “strongly encourages” you to do certain things.

(One of these things is to stay offline while you’re regressed. He worries you might stumble across something scary.)

He’s not always much of a talker himself, so he completely understands if you like to keep things quiet or if you experience verbal shutdown. He never presses you to talk when you’re unable or uncomfortable.

Ennui

You thought Disgust was good at helping you act big when you’re regressed? Ennui is even better. If you regress when you don’t want to, she lets you copy her behaviors to seem as unaffected as possible to others.

She has all the kid games on her phone. All of them. Every single one.

If you don’t know French, she’ll teach you. If you DO know French, she’ll treat it like it’s a secret language the two of you share.

Her hair is long and straight, and if you’re the kind of regressor who likes to play with hair, she’ll tolerate literal hours of braiding and styling.

You see her smile more than anyone else does, because absolutely everything you do is interesting to her.

Envy

She is the worst (best) when it comes to spoiling you. She constantly showers you with new toys and blankets and pacifiers; she can’t help herself, you just deserve it!

She is constantly complimenting you, going on and on about how cute and sweet and small you are.

She loves to look at moodboards and agere outfits with you, admiring all the cool styles other people create.

(And then she encourages you to create your own, and spends literal days obsessing over what you make.)

As small as she is, she always manages to make you feel smaller.

Bonus: Nostalgia

(Yes, she was barely in the movie, but I still love her XD)

Nothing you do can upset her; even the loudest tantrum is met with fond chuckling and affectionate words.

She loves to bake with you, and she makes the absolute best cookies.

Yes, she has heard of that weird obscure children’s movie; and yes, she would love to watch it with you.

She’s definitely a scrapbooker and has a half dozen books filled with pictures of you.

She has a nursery full of vintage toys for you to play in.

Anxiety mostly regresses to help with overthinking

She enjoys using her paci as a teether

Anxiety doesn’t really have a specific age she regresses down to

Joy and Fear would be her main caregivers, and sometimes Ennui takes care of her too

LITTLE ANXIETY AND CAREGIVER ENNUI HEAD CANNONS 🧡💜

- ennui found out about anxiety regression bc she found anxiety having a panic attack and regressed

- ennui had no clue on what the flip was happening, but did some research on her phone and talked to anxiety once anxiety was bigger

- ennui was 1000% supportive of the regression and began to look after little anxiety

- ennui lets anxiety play games on her phone such as animal jam, adopt me, and has pbs kids for little anxiety

- Ennui uses french endearment names for anxiety, like Ma pépette, mon petite, mon mandarine, ma princesse, mon soleil

- ennui reassures all of anxiety worries

- she made anxiety a matching sweatshirt but its orange

- loves to cuddle with anxiety

- she loves to swaddle anxiety and cradle her when shes regressed very young

- Ennui learned a little bit of spanish bc anxiety sometimes uses spanish words when shes regressed

- she gave anxiety her favorite paci

- Ennui is prepared for any situation that could happen as to not stress anxiety

- she makes anxiety the best angel milk

- she was the first to find out about anxiety age regression

Hey! so what did you think about Claire on the bear? I've seen some people call her a mary sue, a mpdg, a pick me which feels a bit much to me lol. I generally agree w people who say that she wasn't fleshed out and felt out of place bc of how carmy viewed her. My only thing is she never felt like an ER Doctor. Her career was supposed to be equally demanding so it should've affected their relationship in some small way at least but she kinda just seemed available for him at any given moment.

One of them I can see an argument for, the other two no. So before I get into the one I can see an argument for, I really need people to understand that these terms actually mean something. They're not blanket descriptors for female characters who annoy you and while we're at it, just for initiumseries, I'm going to add for the record that there aren't male versions of pick mes and manic pixie dream girls because these stock characters (or in the case of a pick me, viewpoints,) are rooted in misogyny

A Pick Me is specific

A Mary Sue is specific

Mary Sue stories—the adventures of the youngest and smartest ever person to graduate from the academy and ever get a commission at such a tender age. Usually characterized by unprecedented skill in everything from art to zoology, including karate and arm-wrestling [...] She saves the day by her wit and ability, and, if we are lucky, has the good grace to die at the end [...]

Like even Nathan Rabin who coined the term MPDG apologized for doing so because it keeps being misused:

I feel deeply weird, if not downright ashamed, at having created a cliché that has been trotted out again and again in an infinite Internet feedback loop. I understand how someone could read the A.V. Club list of Manic Pixie Dream Girls and be offended by the assertion that a character they deeply love and have an enduring affection for, whether it’s Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall or Katharine Hepburn in “Bringing Up Baby,” is nothing more than a representation of a sexist trope or some sad dude’s regressive fantasy.

It doesn't make sense that a character as nuanced and unforgettable as Annie Hall could exist solely to cheer up Alvy Singer. As Kazan has noted, Allen based a lot of Annie Hall on Diane Keaton, who, as far as I know, is a real person and not a ridiculous male fantasy.

From what I can recall, nothing about Claire is "Pick-Meish" or "Mary Sueish", she explains that when they were kids and a girl broke her arm, everyone was freaked out except for her because she wanted to understand the injury, that is not Pick Me-ish.

The fact that she has six months left on her residency doesn't make her a Mary Sue.

Now with regards to being an MPDG, these are the characteristics of one:

That day in 2007, I remember watching "Elizabethtown" and being distracted by the preposterousness of its heroine, Claire. Dunst's psychotically bubbly stewardess seemed to belong in some magical, otherworldly realm -- hence the "pixie" -- offering up her phone number to strangers and drawing whimsical maps to help her man find his way. And as Dunst cavorted across the screen, I thought also of Natalie Portman in "Garden State," a similarly carefree nymphet who is the accessory to Zach Braff's character development. It's an archetype, I realized, that taps into a particular male fantasy: of being saved from depression and ennui by a fantasy woman who sweeps in like a glittery breeze to save you from yourself, then disappears once her work is done.

She isn't quite the "pixie" part of the trope, I don't think she's whimsical enough for that, instead I would say she's the "insufferable female lead in an indie" trope (love this!)

because she does kind of just appear or sweep in to Carmy's life and has this history with him

and instead of giving Carmy her number, she asks for his, therefore the narrative places the onus of initial pursuit on her

she's been carrying this torch for him since they were kids

and her role is to be someone in his life that makes him feel good, that takes his feelings into consideration,

that gives him peace

that urges him out of his shell

that shows him another way he can be and feel outside of the restaurant

while we basically know nothing about her outside of that role.

What makes this iteration more complex than others is not Claire, it's not that she's a fully fleshed out character and we see more than a glimpse of her life and it's not that we get to know about her personally because we don't really, what we get is this

which just goes back round to Carmy and his complicated relationship with food and cooking anyway

the subversion lies with Carmy and how he needs to heal and still has a lot of unprocessed trauma that doesn't go away because Claire entered his life, the show shits all over the typical outcome of the MPDG coming into the male protagonist's life and making it all better.

I'm not saying that they did that purposefully as in they're trying to say something about MPDG, like I don't think the show purposefully framed her as one or views her as one, I think they just wanted to show how deep-rooted generational trauma is and how it presents itself and how it affects your current relationships and it ended up being subverting an MPDG-esque trope for the male protagonist.

I don't know if any of this makes sense, I haven't slept and it's like 5 AM lmao.

Regressor Emotions Headcanons (Inside Out 2)

@imjustaspie and Anon suggested regressor Anxiety headcanons, but I just could’ve leave the others out. XD Bonus Nostalgia! No real spoilers, but still under the cut until the movie’s been out for longer

Anxiety

She is incredibly nervous about regressing for the first time. Relaxing is hard enough for her; being emotionally vulnerable is terrifying. But, with the others’ help, she eventually starts regressing.

She is a crier. Any little mistake starts the sad tears, and the slightest kindness makes her weepy.

She is super snuggly, cuddling up to everyone. She needs all the hugs.

Her regular life involves a lot of long nights, so when she’s regressed she’s a frequent napper.

She LOVES visiting Imagination Land when she’s regressed. She runs wild in the pillow fort and blows giant soap bubbles and completely forgets her fears.

Embarrassment 

He’s the only purely involuntary regressor out of the Headquarter’s crew. He usually slips after he’s done something he feels is super wrong.

He needs a lot of patient reassurance to convince him that his mistakes are fixable and that he’s not bad for messing up once in a while.

His favorite activity is coloring. He loves coloring sheets and always runs to show his completed pictures to Sadness.

He often forgets how big he is and asks to be picked up. The other emotions make him a big hammock swing so he can feel like he’s being held.

He’s a pacifier guy, and almost always has one in his mouth. Even when he’s not actually regressed he finds them soothing.

Ennui

She’s obviously a tech kid, constantly playing games on her phone.

She can be very whiny when she doesn’t want to do something. “That’s boring! YOU’RE boring!”

(But she always does the thing anyway, because she’s little and the others are The Boss.)

She LOVES action movies and regresses even deeper while she’s watching them.

All her pleases and thank yous are in French, and she says them sparingly. You know she’s really grateful when she mumbles “Merci”.

Envy

She’s a major hair toucher; she loves to play with (and tug on) hair, both her own and other peoples’.

She loves being carried around and gets all wiggly from excitement.

She frequently borrows one of Embarrassment’s hoodies and runs around, dragging fabric and giggling like crazy.

She loves to play with the others, though she sometimes needs a reminder to not snatch toys.

Everything she sees is cool! Everything is awesome! She wants to experience everything!

Nostalgia

She prefers classic cartoons and movies; things like “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You” and “Fantasia”.

She also loves children’s books - “Matilda”, “Little Lord Fauntleroy”, “The Swiss Family Robinson”, etc.

She’s not a play-pretender, but she loves looking at and collecting toys.

She crafts glasses chains for herself, and changes them out frequently. (They are a necessity, by the way - she will lose her glasses in seconds without a chain.)

She likes to watch memories of Riley playing. Even if she doesn’t play along, watching makes her feel smaller.

Sadness starting regressing to cope with the changes of Riley moving away from Minnesota.

Sadness' little age is around a few months to 2 and a half years old. >-<

Sadness doesn't speak much when in little space.

The first to find out about sadness' age regression was joy, confused by the behaviour quickly learned how positively it was able to impact sadness and clam her down when in a sadness spiral joy started to accept and encourage the behaviour even taking part in being sadness' caregiver.

When the other old emotions found out they were a little confused but didn't really mind, as long as anger didn't have to care for sadness he didn't care, and Fear once insisting to care over sadness in case she hurts herself or gets in danger when in little space.

Whenever joy and the others are too busy to care over sadness she or they get Nostalgia from the waiting room to care for sadness until she's out of little space, Nostalgia is like a grandmama to sadness when regressed.

Sadness' favorite things to do when in little space is to colour, nap, snuggle with whomever is caring for her or her stuffie, playing with joy, getting uppies from embarrassment and playing games or watching baby shows on ennui's phone, like bluey etc.

Sadness' first agere gift was a paci from disgust to stop her from sucking on her thumb as she obviously thought it was hygienic.

Often whenever sadness is slipping into little space joy loves to set up sadness a "little space cave" in her bunk bed with stuffies and the essentials for sadness to comfortably regress and especially because Joy loves to see that cute little smile on sadness' face seeing how everything is set up just for her.

When sadness gets upset during little space joy loves to comfort sadness by patting her back and feeding her warm milk in a bottle until she peacefully fulls asleep in joys arms or feels better

Sometimes sadness feels ashamed and/or embarrassed of her agere but joy is always there to reassure sadness that there's nothing to be ashamed of as long as it's healthy she's always willing to support Sadness in whatever comforts her.
