Saint George
Died: 303
Feast Day: April 23
Patronage: England, crusaders, soldiers
Saint George was a Roman soldier of Greek Christian origin. He was a Praetorian guard for Diocletian who valued his service. When the Emperor ordered the soldiers to sacrifice to the gods, St. George refused, even after Diocletian offered him land, money, and slaves. George was then tortured and decapitated. He is one of the 14 Holy Helpers and a prominent military patron often depicted fighting a dragon used to represent the devil. Today he’s known and revered by both Christians and Muslims.

John Martin (1789-1854) "Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion" (1812) Oil on canvas Romanticism Located in the Saint Louis Art Museum, St Louis, Missouri, United states The painting depicts Sadak, a fictional character in a story in James Ridley's The Tales of the Genii; it is a faux-Oriental tale allegedly from a Persian manuscript, but actually the work of Ridley himself. In Ridley's story, the hero Sadak is sent by his Sultan, Amurath, to find the memory-destroying "waters of oblivion." The Sultan maliciously intends to use the waters on Sadak's wife Kalasrade in a seduction attempt. Sadak endures a range of trials — a tempest at sea, a plague, evil genii, a subterranean whirlpool — before he attains his goal. In the end, the Sultan himself falls victim to the water's effect. Amurath dies; Sadak becomes Sultan. Martin's picture portrays Sadak at the climax of his struggle, just before he reaches the waters of oblivion.

Inktober day 28: Sebek Zigvolt // Cucafera
Cucafera or Cuca fera (wild critter) is a monstrous dragon from the catalan bestiary (the ensemble of real and mythical animals statues exhibited during local festivities in the Catalan Countries, originating from the medieval theater during the processions of Corpus Christi).
Cucafera is used to represent both "idolatry" and "heresy" during Corpus, and the oldest documented one is from Montblanc (Concà de Barberà) from the XIV century. There's also documentation of a Cucafera in the city of Múrcia in the XVII century, a vestige of when catalan was still spoken there.
Cucafera is represented as a kind of giant turtle but with a crocodile's head and an extensible neck. Cucafera clacks its teeth to scare children and everyday it eats 13 cats and 3 kids. It's said to be related to the Tarasca from Tarascó (Provença, France).

Every writer I know has had that one English teacher who encouraged thier talent and helped them find thier voice. The one they dedicate a book to or send them a signed copy years later. Meanwhile, I had Mr. Fish-Breath (name redacted, new name given because he would not stay out of female student's personal space and had the WORST fish-breath) my high school English teacher who was determined to "Shake things up" and be hip and cool by forcing us to present ted-talks and operate blogs about classic literature. He also believed in never giving A student's A's. Which as a student gunning for academic scholarships with an asian mom was a capital offence anyway. During one of his funky, fresh writing assignments that I had BUSTED MY ASS ON I went to his class after hours to try to talk my B+ into an A- because I was not bringing that shit home and TO MY FACE! He Lowered the grade and told me "Your over-effusive use of language tricked me into giving you a higher grade than you deserved." Out of PURE UNADULTERATED SPITE since that moment I have remined a deeply effusive writer, and now my lush and lyrical novel Saints of Storm and Sorrow is out in the world. So Mr. Fish-Breath can eat crow.
If there's any advice I'm willing to give out about publishing and making it as a writer, its that doing it for spite will get you just as far or farther than dreams in my experience.

God it just hit me.
Names are power in VnC. We call the piece of the world formula that defines a vampire their "true name." Learning and altering a vampire's true name gives you near-absolute power over them. Vanitas hides his old name as part of his "Vanitas" persona—a defense mechanism to hide his vulnerable self.
And names are an axis of discrimination too. The main way we've been examining discrimination against the dhampirs is through the lens of vampires refusing to call them by their names. And Luna, the perennial outsider, seems not to have been given a real name. They certainly didn't have a name that they liked or identified with for most of their life.
So with all that context, even more than it might be in another series, Teacher's whole name shtick becomes such an insane power move. He changes his name constantly and will brutally punish anyone that gets it wrong. Nobody has the power that would come from knowing whatever his first/true name was. He has the physical and social power to punish and correct anyone that doesn't call him what he wants to be called. He is in complete control of how people address him, or at least close to complete control, which is such a big deal within this story.

“The importance of visualizing success? You know, it's a part of me. I was born with this innate idea of success, always striving to be someone who achieves many things.
Every year, every month, every day, I have new goals – not only in sports, but in every aspect of life. Setting objectives and goals for your family, for yourself, at work. I think that's the step to success.”
