Sometimes Pearl gets sad. Here are some images and Gifs of people being good to comfort them.
I'm not transcribing because reading and writing on my own for too long sucks and I'm tired.
I'm sorry. It's still going to be tagged with gifs and image so you can block it if that messes with your accessibility.

if pointing out that the age of getting a phone decreasing along with the prevalence of short form video as the dominant form of social media content during the most significant collective educational gap in recent history all of which happened during one of the most significant windows of psychological development in a human lifetime has had a deleterious effect on the attention spans, self-regulation, impulse control, social skills, tech literacy, and actual literacy of zoomers and gen alpha. if pointing out that that is a real and serious problem makes me a boomer and an old crank who has fallen for “kids these days” propaganda someone find me a porch and a rocking chair so i can yell at you to get off my lawn
#you have to meet the problem with empathy not deny its existence. it’s not their fault but things should also change about this#i’m extremely passionate abt this like. i am too online and was as a teenager but the extent to which you can Be Online has like quadrupled#and it is not good for you

We don't know that guy.
Before anyone starts whining, go donate to the fund OUR community started for actual SA victims. Shut up and put a dollar on the jar. Thanks, Good Night.
#good omens#neil gaiman#enough people have said what i had to say about both the horrid case of him and those women AND how we reacted as a fanbase#yeah maybe he did part of the book and the second season of the show#but we're the people that brought life to good omens#so this is OUR community and OUR fandom and he is no longer welcome in this place#this is for Terry and Terry only and even Neil knows that#if it wasn't clear already my thoughts go to the victims#sorry if this is a bit ventish but i'm tired of the lack of empathy of some people on this website and i made this as a last call#WE. DON'T. SUPPORT. HIM.

dr who is (apparently) redesigning this turtle from the classic series to be just a green human elf lady instead and twitter is eating it up because "no one would take the show seriously otherwise" and "the audience isn't able to empathize with something that doesn't look human". another fascinating data point in the psychology of doctor who fans.
#i know people will read this and think i'm saying the show should look stupid#i'm actually saying 'why are doctor who fans so rejecting of the idea that you can make an alien with a beak look good in a dramatic contex#and why do so many of them think the audience are incapable of feeling empathy towards a lizard#when the show so often asks you to read emotion into a puppet as simple and inhuman as a dalek#also a lot of people comparing making it human to shape of water#come on#he was not passing the harkness test and he still won the oscar

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
[plain-text version of this post can be found under the cut]
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

#hlep#original#mental health#my sympathies and empathies to anyone who has to rely on this kind of hlep to get what they need.#the people in my life who most need to see this post are my family but even if they did I sincerely doubt they would internalize it#i've tried to break thru to them so many times it makes my head hurt. so i am focusing on boundaries and on finding other forms of support#and this thing i learned today helps me validate those boundaries. the example with the milk was from my therapist.#the example with the towing company was a real thing that happened with my parents a few months ago while I was age 28. 28!#a full adult age! it is so infantilizing as a disabled adult to seek assistance and support from ableist parents.#they were real mad i was mad tho. and the spoons i spent trying to explain it were only the latest in a long line of#huge family-related spoon expenditures. distance and the ability to enforce boundaries helps. haven't talked to sisters for literally the#longest period of my whole life. people really believe that if they love you and try to help you they can do no wrong.#and those people are NOT great allies to the chronically sick folks in their lives.#you can adore someone and still fuck up and hurt them so bad. will your pride refuse to accept what you've done and lash out instead?#or will you have courage and be kind? will you learn and grow? all of us have prejudices and practices we are not yet aware of.#no one is pure. but will you be kind? will you be a good friend? will you grow? i hope i grow. i hope i always make the choice to grow.#i hope with every year i age i get better and better at making people feel the opposite of how my family's ableism has made me feel#i will see them seen and hear them heard and smile at their smiles. make them feel smart and held and strong.#just like i do now but even better! i am always learning better ways to be kind so i don't see why i would stop

this bothers me a lot as someone with a low empathy score:
no, you cannot learn empathy. empathy is when you feel and share the emotions of the other person. your friend is sad? you feel sad.
you can learn to be understanding, and compassionate, and how to react when you don't feel those things, but you cannot learn to experience a sensation that you do not.
#actually autistic#low empathy#i have worked VERY hard on my compassion dammit#and being told it's not good enough constantly because i dont physically feel your sadness?#right im the monster

the absolute unbearable cruelty that the writers foisted upon Cressida
a woman taught from the beginning in her home, by her own mother, that she cannot trust any other women, who finally, FINALLY felt she had a friend- who didn't care for her much at all. a woman who grew up in a house that is more akin to a mausoleum, a woman dressed up as a doll and made to masquerade and sing and dance for the attention of a half decent man, never to be considered seriously. a woman who is foisted onto a man old enough to be her grandfather, who wants 4 children from her, and intends to keep her locked up in his estate with at most 1 social outing a month, who didn't believe in listening to music, or art.
a woman who goes to the only person she ever considered a friend, saying 'I need to save myself. Run with me. Write with me. Help me.' only for that friend to turn her back on her, and talked ill of her for the rest of her time in her society. a woman who tried to claw her way out of a horrible circumstance, only to be told she's too stupid to do so. a woman who's mother wrote the article that insulted her friend's family, an article she still regretted. a woman who tried to save herself and was then sent off to an aunt even less warm than the circumstances she'd grown up in.
what was Cressida meant to do? she had no one to turn to, and when she tried, she was turned away. she had no options left to her, she exhausted all of them. yes, blackmailing Penelope was harsh, but I would have done almost anything to save myself from sexual assault at the hands of a husband old enough to be my father twice over who was clearly intending on mistreating me, especially if I was dropped by the only person I ever considered a friend.
Cressida's story is so fucking tragic. My heart cracked clean in half for her
#cressida cowper#eloise bridgerton#eloise turning her back on cressida to go back to penelope as if cressida hadn't been a good friend to her. . .#eloise i love you but that was FOUL#bridgerton#bridgerton spoilers#they could NEVER make me hate you cressida#i felt so much empathy for her you wouldn't even believe#the way i would have clawed my hands bloody trying to escape what they put her into

it's actually terrifying how quickly the concept of self care (originally a radical concept rooted in the black panther party's efforts to support other black ppl living through racism) became another tool of self-management which is viewed as both a moral obligation + an individual responsibility. businesses + employers + other institutions now easily wield it as a progressive way to say "if you're upset about xyz, make yourself get over it". "we are going to treat you like shit + you need to learn how to cope with that or else you're doing something wrong"
i have seen job listings where "ability to practice self care" was listed as a requirement for employment. as a case worker, we were repeatedly drilled on "self-care" as a response to unconscionably high case loads, traumatizing experiences, dead end job obligations, + poor living conditions due to subpar pay/high stress. my clients would go to appointments regarding their evictions, food insecurity, active domestic violence situations, etc + receive tips on "self care" without any tangible community, legal, or structural support to follow.
everyone absolutely deserves to care for themselves + it is useful to circulate affirmations + advice on how to do this. this should happen within communities, through a sincere concern/love for one another, as a way of helping everyone live the best life possible while we work towards total liberation. it should not be a replacement for caring for one another!!! it should be one of many ways of caring for one another!!!
#they once made me go to a training about how to turn off your feelings before working with institutionalized clients#literally stating that empathy + emotions are what cause burnout when working in the mental health field#i wish i was making that up i really truly do#i probably still have screenshots lmao#anyway remember when i was institutionalized myself because i was too good at turning off all my feelings???#cuz i do.#anti psychiatry

Emotional scene from Muppets Star Trek.
#star trek#muppets#data tng#picard#tng#kermit#fan art#next gen#okay so like…#this is obviously mostly intended as a joke but also#human is arbitrary#especially in star trek where every other planet seems to have its own sapient nonhuman species#human is fucking arbitrary#data holds humanhood as the ideal because he was built by humans#but also because the qualities that are most often used to define him as 'lesser' are qualities that humans especially seem to prize#nobody's tries to claim that vulcans aren't real people because they don't feel emotion#or that ferengi don't show enough empathy to qualify#we don't get any betazoids going around saying that true personhood is defined by how good you are at mindreading#in a world where the enterprise was crewed by muppets#and data genuinely was the closest thing to a human onboard#Measure Of A Man would have been about Picard trying to prove that you can't have someone dismantled#just because they can't sing or travel by map

this year my challenge for everyone is to unlearn the association between love and morality. love is not something that is inherently morally good, and the absence of love is not something that is inherently bad. sex without love isn't morally bankrupt, it's just an action. people without love aren't less kind or less good, they're just people. when we can get past this false (and often unnoticed) dichotomy of good love/evil lovelessness then i think we are going to be able to take leaps and bounds in sex positivity, aro advocacy, certain discussions of mental health...
#and also. not the direct focus. but love doesn't make things good. you can be in love and do terrible terrible things.#people do bad things in the name of love and in despite of love all the time.#but!! imagine a world where people could exist as people and not be demonized.#sex positivity means being cool about All sex. reexamine your internal systems of moral judgement.#this goes for sex workers. for aroallo people. especially aroallo men. for aro people in general who might enjoy sex.#and frankly i think it can easily bleed into discussions about mental health disorders around 'not feeling' certain things#especially demonizing ppl who don't feel as much empathy. i think there's definitely a correlation between that and the emphasis on love.#our support needs to go out to Everybody and i think these things are all structured together in one way or another!!#it might not be immediately obvious but when i tell you it all leads back to amatonormativity..... little bit wild.... large bit wild....#anyway. horror movie psychopath 'oh he can't feel emotions or love' damn alright. well. let's take a closer look at that.#silly that there's an association between lack of love and Murdering. feel like that might affect some stuff.#love is just an emotion/a feeling it doesn't mean anything about you one way or another#same with empathy. you can feel it all you want but it doesn't inherently change the actions you choose to take#anyway. thesis statement. there is a socially constructed link between love and morality. unlearn that.#kiss kiss (<— lovelessly)#aromantic#aromanticism#arospec#talking#aroace#aspec#sex positivity

emily prentiss + her waning tolerance of getting close to killers
#criminal minds#criminalmindsedit#criminal minds evolution#cmevolutionedit#cmverse#cmverseedit#emily prentiss#emilyprentissedit#mine#edit#*#category*#the progression here!!!!!! she's so young and playful as lauren she has NO IDEA how much that is going to change her!!!!#and then the memory of it all with karl it all comes back and she's struggling to shake it#and now??? FUCK THAT NOISE she is NOT doing this again#(never not thinking about 'it's clean. i know who the good guys and the bad guys are. i don't have to worry about screwing someone over.'#LIKEEEEEEEEEEEEE the implication of how much it messes her up to connect to monsters and see a sliver of humanity. that she thinks about#screwing over that human piece. that it stays with her. her relationship with empathy is so fascinating to me and i can't get enough!!!!!)#god i love her

sometimes you come across a character that makes you go 'I love you so much that it's teaching me how to forgive myself' and then you just have to live with it
#this is what lucanis is doing to me more than basically any other character I've come across and -- as you may well imagine --#it is shaking me to the very core haha#we have some overlapping traits I've never really seen hit on with such precision or empathy in fiction before#the enduring freeze response is hard to capture in a way that feels real b/c it doesn't really follow normal narrative structure#but mary kirby. is just that fucking good. she did it. and she did it with palpable affection for a character being exactly who they are#for better or for worse and also so many laugh out loud moments along the way. as is her wont#still sad and frustrated about everything going on with bioware and the gaming industry and the world in general#but no one can take this from me either. and that's the furthest thing from nothing lol
