The Witching Hour: Part 1

Originally part of the Calaveras, Elias Navarez saw 8 year old Evelia Torres about to die in a witch burning. He killed everyone who was part of it and then adopted her, defecting from the Calaveras and started his own hunting organization. Originally just Calaveras defectors, the group grows to include other hunters, supernatural creatures, and even some ordinary humans, and the group grows into a family.

Today we meet: Washington Pemberton.

Born in 31th December, 1839, in Philadelphia, Washington Pemberton was the last of the seven children born to Elias Pemberton and his first wife, Virginia Wintour. By the time Washington had been born, only two of his siblings, -Emmett, born in 1834, and Eunice, born in 1836, remained alive, and his parents marriage was in ruins; it hadn’t been long since his father had started seeing a young woman he had met during a trip to New Orleans. Of ill health and weakened by successive pregnancies and a long lasting ailing that was suspected to be phthisis, Washington’s mother did not leave childbed alive.

Orphaned of their adoring mother at an infuriatingly tender age, the Pemberton siblings were raised by their young stepmother -Thérèse Découx, the mulatto woman his father had betrayed their mother with for the last time, and whom he hastily wed in secret fashion. It didn’t took long for the infant Washington to be joined by a little brother, Lawrance John (1840), and raised together, the children grew inseparable. But whereas Lawrance -or “Laurie”, as he was fondly called by his siblings, grew up to be a mischievous and daring rascal, Washington turned out to be the quietest of the litter.

Big and silent since the crib, the tender-hearted Washington became a gentle giant; a rye-blonde youth of clumsy nature, he was timid, studious and easily startled. He was remarkably fond of birds, spending most of his free time in the mansion’s dovecot or reading about exotic species. In 1854, and thanks to the auspices of Lawrance’s uncle, he came into possession of a macaw he named Robinson. By 1856, he already owned a little white mouse called Cotton. He shared his younger brother’s passion for sailing and adventures, even if he resigned himself only to read about them. He was oftentimes bullied by his father.

In 1856, yet to be seventeen, he travelled, alongside Lawrance, to England, to study in the once prestigious Onstyles Boarding School in Herefordshire. Little did he knew, that that year, would change his life.

Okay, backstory for my girl:

Born in September, 1818, in New Orleans, Thérèse Découx was the seventh child and youngest to survive infancy of Laurance Découx, a white man of French origin, and Nannette Henri, a free black woman. She had five older siblings, Berthe (1805), Isabelle (1806), Joseph (1809), Juste (1810), Marthe (1811), Bernard (late 1816), and two younger siblings, Annette (1820) and Jean (1824). She was particularly close to her brother Bernard, who would become a sailor, and to her sister Annette, who would die alongside little Jean and Laurance during a plague of malaria.

As the youngest daughter, she was meant to remain unwed to take care of her mother and nephews, but her fate changed when she met Elias Pemberton (1802) in 1839, a wealthy widower. Their romance blossomed despite the prejudices and the duty; however, they would not be married until later that year, when he brought her to his hometown. To her surprise, she learnt that he had been married during the whole affair, and that his wife had recently died, following the labour of their last son, a child named Washington. By January if 1840 she was already with child, and she gave birth prematurely in St. John’s Eve, a child she decided to call Lawrance John Pemberton in honour of her late father and brother. And thought her married life seemed happy at first -even managing to befriend and raise her stepchildren, Emmett (1832), Eunice (1835) and Washington (1839)-, soon problems started to arise. Her husband was more than reluctant to present her to society, keeping her strictly at home as he showed to many parties with his mistresses, and soon became dismissive and controlling; a miscarriage in (1842), another one in (1846) and a stillbirth of a girl in (1844) ruined what little marital bliss was left. Her husband even turned his control to the young Lawrance, who he expected to pass as a white child, even if his methods and orders were distressing to the toddler. Her only solace -writing letters to her brother Bernard and her mother- would not be enough. In the summer of 1847, she began labour under improper conditions and, after delivering a stillborn child, she developed childbed fever and perished within three days. She was 29.

Her stepchildren and Laurie were not allowed to mourn her, and all of her possessions but a silver locket and a fading portrait ended up in a pyre. She was buried far from her beloved New Orleans. Her mother followed to the grave soon.

Her son would forever resent his father, blaming him -and to an extent, rightfully- for her death.

Literally any little funfact. Who was the tallest one? Which one is Jonah's most and least favorite? Why Jonah chose them of all the other employees?

The tallest one was Victor Clermont at 5'10 (~178 cm). Elias and Jonah himself were the shortest at 5'2 (~157 cm).

William Pemberton was simultaneously his favourite and least favourite body. Mostly because it was the first body he took and thus holds a special place in his heart because He Did It! But also,,, he just had problems witht he body and hated it in general.

Other than that though, he disliked Henry Webster because he honestly wasn't his first, third, or even fifth choice; he selected him because he had a strong connection to the Web, and Jonah was in a tough place at the time and needed its favour. He also really liked Victor Clermont, which was another reason he had William for so little time - he just thought Victor was better.

Why he chose them:

- William was his assitant at the time and was already chosen to take over for Jonah when he died/retired. So Jonah chose him because it would make the most sense and raise the least amount of questions.

- Victor was the Head of Research and better than William in literally every way. Jonah just thought he was neat, and he got tired of William/started having problems with him, and took Victor instead.

- Henry was marked by the Web, other than that Jonah kinda disliked him.

- Richard worked in the Archives and was learning too much too quickly. Seeing as Jonah was due in for another body soon anyway, he thought to kill two birds with one stone.

- James met all the criteria Jonah needed him to, except that he was a tad bit older than he typically liked but Jonah has a thing where he doesn't like to take a body that's too much younger than the one he's currently in (owing back to when he first took William; such a big age difference is too disorienting). James was the most boring of his bodies.

- Elias was closest to his taste appearance wise, but he disliked the man's work ethic and personality and thought it would be too obvious if he took him as his next body. However, given how quickly James deteriorated, Jonah's hand was forced and he had to act soon, thus Elias.

Desire and Decorum Family Trees

Okay in my last story I name dumped a bunch of characters that made up Ernest and Clara’s grandchildren. I didn’t really explain where most of them came from and in my recent story I dropped who a couple kids in this universe married. So this is just my compendium list that makes up the different families. I don’t know if I’ll write more with these grandkids or the kids and such but I figured why not share it? I mean I wrote it up and it just might interest someone. 

And hey if someone notices if the years are off you can correct me lol. At the time most would name their kids after family members but since that would get confusing I tried to just pick other names in its place. The parentheses are just the birth years. If you notice the gap between the children that it kind indicates that there might have been more but they were miscarriages or stillbirths from the time these are just the ones that survived to adulthood. Or purposely waited (like Briar and Edmund they waited on purpose, there was no stillborns or miscarriages with them).

Warder Physiology: When Greta was killed by her brother, she was able to stay on the earthly plane as a warder, someone who guides spirits who have just died to the afterlife. She has an ethereal body with a unique power set.

Flight: As an ethereal being, Secret can levitate and fly through the air at will, although she seems to be able to allow herself to be subject to gravity.

Intangibility: Secret typically remains in an intangible state. Solid matter and some forms of energy have been able to pass through her body without causing her harm. Secret is, however, susceptible to electric and magic-based attacks, even though she is mostly intangible. Secret can actually make herself solid for up to a few minutes at a time, allowing her to physically interact with tangible matter.

Sublimation: Secret is visually comprised of a smoky, misty quasi-ethereal substance of unknown composition. She can turn her body partly or wholly into smoke. As smoke, Secret has complete control over herself, able to travel through the air as she desires. She can perceive her environment while in this smoke form, even though she often has no discernible eyes or ears or whatnot. She has forced her gaseous body into the air passageways of enemies to disallow them to breathe, making them pass out.

Smoke Construct Creation: Much like how she can make her normal-looking body solid for brief periods of time, Secret can make the smoke she produces/becomes form into solid constructs. She has made a cage before, and she has used her smoke to throw enemies and catch falling allies.

Metamorphosis: Secret can alter her form to look like whatever she wishes. She still retains the same color scheme, but the shape can be changed to make her look like other things. One of her favorite alternatives to her human form is a dragon-like monster with fangs and claws, but she has altered her appearance in other ways as well. Much like her normal form, Secret seems to be able to make herself solid while in these other shapes as well.

Superhuman Strength: When Secret shape-shifts parts of her body into shapes that give her strength. For example, she has shape-shifted her fists into large, stone-hard fists that were able to greatly crack the concrete she punched.

Superhuman Durability: Secret can shape-shift parts of her body into a denser form. She has once turned her hands into a wall to protect her teammate from danger.

Size Alteration: While altering her appearance, Secret can make herself larger than her standard human size. Her dragon-like monster form tends to be a quite large, and she has transformed herself to look like a several-stories-tall version of a certain politician.

Teleportation: Secret has the ability to "smoke jump," as she calls it. Using this ability, she can teleport herself and/or others in a puff of smoke. She has been able to travel considerable distances with her smoke jumps.

Dimensional Travel: In addition to her ability to teleport, Secret has the ability to bring others into a pocket dimension that only she has been shown to be able to access. Calling this place "the Abyss," Secret has brought in friends into her dimension to protect them from danger, and she has pulled enemies within the Abyss as a form of confinement. Inside the Abyss is pure darkness, unless Secret herself appears to communicate with her prisoners. The Abyss is somehow inside of Secret, part of her being.

Fear Projection: The pocket dimension known as the Abyss has the innate ability to create fear and other negative feelings within the people inside. She has accidentally almost traumatized her friends when she briefly pulled them inside to protect them, but she has also intentionally used this ability to scare enemies.

Magic/Supernatural Sense: Secret was able to detect the magical energy signature of Klarion and track him down. Furthermore, she can also see spectral entities that usually cannot be seen.

Death Sense: Secret can sense when death is about to happen, and she can sense when death has just occurred.

Self-Sustenance: Secret does not appear to require food, water or oxygen, claiming she "Missed the sensation of hunger", although she has been sleeping at times.

Clairvoyance: By turning into smoke and entering the body of the dying Kathy Sutton through her air passageways, Secret was able to "mingle" in a sense with Kathy's soul, which was preparing to leave and enter the afterlife. While the experience seemed like a dream, Secret was able to coax Kathy into staying among the living. Secret could presumably do this for others if she had the time and the person in question likewise had the realistic potential to stabilize.

Possession: By forcing herself into the air passageways of someone, Secret was able to control that person's body. Not only was she able to control the person's movements, she was able to speak through the person and was able to access that person's metahuman powers.

The hero known as Secret was once an ordinary girl named Greta Hayes. She was murdered by her adoptive brother, Billy, who would later become the supervillain known as Harm. Because of the manner of her death, Greta remained stuck on this plane of existence, a gateway between the living and the dead.

In her first appearance, Secret was being held against her will by the DEO. Robin, Impulse, and Superboy helped her to escape, and were able to convince her to join their crimefighting team, "Young Justice," at the same time as Wonder Girl and Arrowette. Being incorporeal, Secret is able to take on a variety of appearances, and is referred to as "the mist girl" or "the bottle girl" by the various agents who pursue her throughout her career.

Her brother Billy assumed the villainous identity of Harm and attacked Young Justice, but died when his own father shot him. Billy returned during the events of "Day of Judgment," when the entirety of Hell had been evacuated. He again battled the team, using the substance of Secret.

Before her real name was known, Secret was often referred to as Suzie. Secret became good friends with the two girls, and was often portrayed as shy. For awhile she nursed a crush on Robin, and often defended his actions and followed his leadership unquestioningly. She also often expressed jealousy of Spoiler, Robin's girlfriend, to the point where the pair of them once had a full out battle across Gotham City, only stopped by the combined efforts of both Red Tornado and Robin.

During the Sins of Youth event, a temporarily adult Secret, with the aid of Deadman, chased down Klarion the Witch Boy's cat familiar Teekl, as Klarion had been overtly threatening them. Surprising her age-altered friends, she caused Klarion to back down by threatening to kill Teekl. When undoing everything he had done, Klarion insisted that it was everyone or nothing. Secret didn't want to change back to a kid, but was persuaded to by Robin, who promised to always be there for her. As predicted by Merry Pemberton, this would later cause many problems. Secret would even go so far as to physically threaten Spoiler.

At one point Hal Jordan, the Spectre, tried to mentor Secret. During this time, she visited her father in jail. Under the mental influence of "Billy," her father rejected her, leaving her more despondent than before.

Secret eventually gave in to the darkness in her nature at the behest of Darkseid, whom she mistakenly referred to as "Doug Side." During her time on Apokolips, Billy possessing her father, launched the body into one of the firepits, killing them both. Although Hal Jordan offered to step in and save Greta, as well as the world, the current Young Justice team advisor, Snapper Carr, rejected the offer, preferring that the kids use Secret turning evil as a "learning experience." Robin was eventually able to talk her down by himself. Towards the end of Young Justice, a disgusted Darkseid stripped Greta of her powers, and left her an ordinary, living girl, which was, ironically, just what she had always wanted to be.

Greta now attends the Saint Elias School for Girls, with schoolmates Cassie Sandsmark and Cissie King-Jones.

VIA @theboldandcold ---- Above is Alice Purdy from Glenn Woodsworth, one was on Canada's leading climbers in the 1960s, who wrote this about her: "From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, Alice Purdey was the strongest female climber in B.C. and probably in Canada. She started climbing with the Varsity Outdoor Club (VOC) during her university days. She notched a good number of first ascents and new routes in the Coast Mountains, particularly in the Tantalus and Pantheon Ranges and the Pemberton and Ape Lake regions, not to mention half a dozen or so new routes at Squamish. She was on an unsuccessful attempt on the unclimbed north ridge of Logan in 1967. Her biggest climb was an ascent of rarely climbed Mt St Elias in 1971. Alice mostly climbed with friends from the VOC and the BCMC and with Dick Culbert. She and I did a few things together, mostly on a few VOC trips and at Squamish. Here she is on an early ascent of Papoose One with me in the fall of 1965, when the route still had plenty of trees and shrubs for belay purposes. Alice spent some years as a nurse in Hazelton, where she and Fred Douglas became good friends with Tom and Sys Richards. Later she and the family spent many years in Nepal, where she was involved in community health work; eventually Alice and Fred settled in Vancouver. Recently she coauthored the 7th edition of the ever-popular 109 Walks in B.C.'s Lower Mainland. Alice and I share a curious family link. During World War II, my parents and I moved to Port Alice on Vancouver Island: my father was the doctor for the entire north part of the Island. Alice was born there, with my father's help.
