I'm gonna have a (not) quick ramble about this

First off, how do they know each other? Jackson lived in Kingsmont Town for the first few years of his life, (I think until he was 8 (?) when his mom died, then he moved to live with his grandma. But where did his grandma live?) Then he moved to Portland, Maine with his Tios

Elijah, however, said that he's from Riverville, apparently a place where dodge-ball doesn't exist.

"All the way" implies that Riverville is far from Kingsmont Town, and we're not sure which states Kingsmont nor Riverville are in. Plus, Elijah never said he was returning to Kingsmont, like Jackson did. This is his first time in Kingsmont, so Jackson and Elijah didn't know each other pre-dead Jackson's mom.

Jackson and Elijah are from different places, how the frick frack snick snack tic tac sidetrack paddy wack do they know each other?!?

So, maybe when Jackson moved in with his grandma, Elijah lived in that same town. They knew each other for 4 years (Maybe more, maybe less depending on when Jackson went to live with his grandma, and when they met) before Jackson left for Kingsmont with his tios.

edit: or they could've been in foster care together! I can't believe I didn't think about this before I'm stupid, anyways that makes a lot of sense, if they were in foster care together

You gotta read Big Girl by Meg Elison.!This book!!!! A short collection of (soft?) sci-fi stories, a novella, and an interview that feature a critical fat politic!!! Not only does she write so considerately about the cruelty experienced when you are fat but she gives permission to feel spiteful and safe in our bodies. There’s a part where two fatties make love and she describes them lifting their bellies and pressing them together. She writes diligently of the torture of child parent relationships when fatness (or the fear of fatness) shadows every interaction. I feel like the fat me from every age they’ve ever been was so carefully understood. The cruelty of living in a world that wishes you did not exist is acknowledged and never made into a joke and that's a rarity lately.

In my generation, the quintessential underpaid lousy job to have was barista. So many served in the foam and whipped cream trenches that it became an easy punchline for aimless youth who had to pay rent, for college students and would-be artists, for anyone whose dignity could be displaced by an apron and a nametag for eight grueling hours of caffeine craving customers, coming and coming.

Among those customers were many whose faces I’ll never recall. Contrary to the SNLification of the complicated half-caf-skim-milk-no-foam kind of ordering, most people came in for something listed on the menu in normal words: mocha, latte, black coffee in a cup. Thousands breezed in and out of the café in a bookstore where I worked on the shore of the Willamette river. But a few I will never forget.

We called them our cryptids. A couple of them were regular enough that anyone who worked an opening shift would see them, and their orders were strange enough that we would pass the word as soon as we’d made it twice.
