I need to thank the Evercade for introducing me to such insanely cool games I'd never hear of otherwise, like this game called El Viento, which is a 90s sega genesis anime platformer where you play as a peruvian mystic fighting the mafia in 1920s New York where the mafia, including Al Capone, is trying to resurrect an ancient demon.
You dont get games like this anymore.
HIGHLY recommend picking up the Renovation Collection, it has this game, Valis I and III (no 2 which is weird but im sure thats some sort of licensing issue) and a bunch of other cool looking games

Quiero llover, y no parar nunca.
Y si me ahogo,

"El Viento" (エル・ヴィエント) for the Genesis console is a lesser-known but intriguing entry in the Sega Genesis library, released in 1991. Developed by Wolf Team, this action-platformer is part of the "Earnest Evans" series and stands out for its unique setting and protagonist. Set in the 1920s, the game follows Annet, a young sorceress wielding mystical boomerangs and elemental magic, as she battles to thwart a cult’s plan to summon a mythical demon.
Graphics and Audio
The visual presentation of "El Viento" is one of its most notable aspects. The game pushes the Genesis hardware with detailed, colorful sprites and expansive, varied environments that range from bustling city rooftops to dark, underground caves. The character animations are particularly impressive for the time, displaying smooth and diverse movements that add personality to Annet and her foes.
Backgrounds in "El Viento" are rich with detail and do an excellent job of evoking the game’s 1920s setting, incorporating elements like vintage cars and period architecture. This attention to thematic details helps create a compelling world that stands apart from other platformers of the era.
The soundtrack, composed by Motoi Sakuraba, is another highlight. It features an energetic blend of jazz and rock elements that suit the game’s fast-paced action and period setting. The sound effects are robust, with each spell and enemy attack feeling impactful.
Gameplay Mechanics
"El Viento" is known for its challenging gameplay that combines elements of traditional platformers with fast-paced action. Players control Annet, who can jump, duck, and use a variety of magical attacks. The game introduces a unique arsenal of weapons, primarily Annet's boomerangs, which she can throw in several directions. Additionally, Annet can cast powerful spells that consume magic points, adding a strategic layer to combat.
The level design is complex, featuring multiple paths and hidden areas that encourage exploration. This complexity is coupled with a high difficulty level, with numerous enemies and hazards that require precise control and timing to navigate.
Innovations and Influence
"El Viento" brought several innovations to the platforming genre. Its integration of a magic system into a fast-paced action platformer was relatively novel at the time, providing a gameplay experience that requires both quick reflexes and tactical thinking. The ability to cast spells in a platformer added depth to the combat mechanics that many of its contemporaries lacked.
Furthermore, the game's narrative and setting were quite innovative for an action game of this period. By embedding its gameplay in a rich, historical context and featuring a strong female protagonist, "El Viento" offered a more narrative-driven experience compared to many other action games on the Genesis.
Cultural and Historical Context
Releasing in the early 1990s, "El Viento" was part of the burgeoning scene of action games that explored more complex stories and settings. It reflects a period when game developers were beginning to see the potential of video games as a medium for storytelling, not just as arcade-style diversions.
Conclusion
"El Viento" remains a fascinating piece of Sega Genesis history. Its challenging gameplay, innovative magic mechanics, and unique aesthetic make it stand out from the crowd. While it may not have achieved the fame of some of its contemporaries, its contributions to the genre and the medium should not be overlooked. For fans of retro gaming, especially those who appreciate action-platformers, "El Viento" offers a rewarding, albeit tough, experience that showcases some of the best of what the Genesis had to offer.

MARGARITA VAZQUEZ – LUZ VIOLETA. The autumn wind played from top to bottom, from bottom to top,…
