I need to thank the Evercade for introducing me to such insanely cool games I'd never hear of otherwise, like this game called El Viento, which is a 90s sega genesis anime platformer where you play as a peruvian mystic fighting the mafia in 1920s New York where the mafia, including Al Capone, is trying to resurrect an ancient demon.

You dont get games like this anymore.

HIGHLY recommend picking up the Renovation Collection, it has this game, Valis I and III (no 2 which is weird but im sure thats some sort of licensing issue) and a bunch of other cool looking games

I was helping a lady renovate her extremely haunted apartment and unhaunt it. I walked into a closet and found an extremely creepy figure that looked something out of a glitching horror game, and I brought it to her to ask what the hell it was. She didn’t know, so she brought it to her boyfriend, who was taking a shower, and he said it was his sculpture, though he didn’t know why it was glitching out and he was really upset about it.

I left the figurine to the side to figure out later and helped them fix their bathroom lights and curtains, then I walked into a side room off of the mysterious closet and found more glitching sculptures. At this point, I’d had enough, so I closed the door and turned the lights on and off until the sculptures went back to how they were supposed to look.

The sculptures were actually really fucking cool. One was a skeleton of a burning man, and the other was a punk-rock-singer Medusa. The boyfriend was ecstatic. He asked me for help painting them, which I enthusiastically agreed to, and then I left their newly unhaunted apartment knowing it was a job well done.

A Different Beast

Beast Wrestler (ビースト・ウォリアーズ "Beast Warriors") was one of the first monster fighting games. Released in 1991 for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, it is notable for its unique style and concept.

Yasushi Nirasawa was the man responsible designing the game's monsters, dubbed Dragon Warriors. Nirawasa's designs have appeared in various Tokusatsu productions such as Kamen Rider, but perhaps his most famous would be the 2004 redesign of Gigan for Godzilla Final Wars (He was also responsible for the Xilien designs in the film as well).

Back in 1991, Nirasawa was primarily known for his sculptures and models featured in, and on the covers of Hobby Japan. The box art for Beast Wrestler showcases his work. The image was prominently used in the print advertising.

The Dragon Warriors all quite varied, ranging from humanoid animals to an ooze. Some with various levels of cybernetics and some had truly chimeric designs.

Instead of randomized fights each match of the Tournament is fixed. The player is the "ruler" of a ENTSLL 2019 Dragon Warrior and starts at the bottom of the Domestic Rank to work up to the top of the World Rank.

Yasushi Nirasawa did a six-page comic that was in the instruction manual for the Japanese version of the game. It gives a look at the world where genetically engineered 10 meter tall monsters battle in the arena.

Aside from the designs and the setting, the other defining feature of the game is the concept of combining your Dragon Warrior with a vanquished opponent.

The first time, the player gets two options for combining. This sets up two different paths for completing the World Rank. Based on this decision, a different Dragon Warrior is used in each path to combine for a second form.

While there is much to appreciate about the concept and designs, the gameplay is a shortcoming. The hit boxes don't correspond well and fights are slow. There are some loops and exploits that help with the difficulty, but that doesn't lead to a satisfying victory.

The game also has a Match mode for a fight against the computer or another player, using some of the Domestic and World Rank fighters. Unfortunately, this mode is also is subject to the same issues and the Dragon Warriors are very unbalanced.

It would be fun to see this game made today with modern game technology and design. Yasushi Nirasawa's detailed creations could really come to life. Also, it would be great to see more and varied combinations of beasts.

With a little more time and polish, Beast Wrestler could have been a cult game. Instead, it's an interesting obscurity.

who doesn't at one point go and reno the lots that come in game??

i wanted to reno the builds in the most realistic way - like a house would be reno'd in real life. i'm one of those people that's fairly convinced that not much needs to change to make a HUGE impact (in home renovation). & i think this reno is a perfect example of this.

i pushed hard into the art gallery aesthetic with sculptures and art everywhere. OH! and lots of color on the walls

Telenet Shooting Collection

Telenet was a prolific game developer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, beginning with computers and quickly transitioning into console development. Their focus was often on quantity over quality, with their games often featuring stellar cutscene artwork and excellent music, but typically lacking when it came to the actual game. Their most well-known work is the Valis series in its many incarnations, as well as action games like El Viento and RPGs like Cosmic Fantasy and Arcus. They also published a handful of shoot-em-ups, originally published for the Genesis/Mega Drive and PC Engine, four of which are collected here on the Telenet Shooting Collection. This collection was published by Edia, owner of Telenet’s IP, and crowdfunded on the Japanese site Makuake.
