National Strawberries and Cream Day
Add the perfect mix of sweet and creamy to your celebrations this National Strawberries and Cream Day, which is held each year on May 21. Fresh strawberries and cream is a great treat to indulge in on a hot day. Plus, as these lovely red berries are in season in May, it is also National Strawberry Month.
History of National Strawberries and Cream Day
Strawberries have been traced back to the Roman Empire. Ancient Romans believed this fruit alleviated symptoms of melancholy, fainting, inflammation, fevers, throat infections, kidney stones, bad breath, attacks of gout, as well as diseases of the blood, liver, and spleen. However, food historians think the Greeks knew about strawberries even before this.
The fruit was also a symbol of wealth and luxury in Victorian England. As they were a perishable food, strawberries were only available in season, increasing their demand. After evolving into a luxury, they began to be served during afternoon tea among the wealthy.
History also tells the tale of how this fruit’s harvest and availability coincided with the Wimbledon tournaments, which is as much about strawberries and cream as it is about tennis. While we still don’t know exactly how this dessert became such an integral part of Wimbledon, some sources credit King George V as the one who introduced this delicious treat to the tennis tournament. Some believe the seasonality and popularity of these red berries played a part in it becoming Wimbledon’s snack of choice.
As for how this quintessentially British dish came to be, stories of its origin say Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a close confidant to King Henry VIII, was the brains behind it. King Henry VIII’s court fed approximately 600 hungry lords and ladies twice a day. The chef there came up with the idea to pair sweet strawberries and clotted cream together in a dessert that did not require cooking, and voila, a delicious treat was born! Another version of this story says Cardinal Wolsey mixed these two ingredients at a royal banquet, and whatever the royals ate instantly became fashionable. It was even customary for newlyweds to eat strawberries and cream for their wedding breakfast!
National Strawberries and Cream Day timeline
1509 The First Time this Dish was Served
According to rumor, strawberries and cream are first served together by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey at a banquet during Henry VIII's reign.
1550 Its Popularity is Going Strong
Tudor traveler Andrew Boorde publishes an ode to this dish, saying, “Rawe crayme undecocted, eaten with strawberyes or hurtes (whortleberry, bilberry) is a rurall mannes blanket. I have knowen such blankettes hath put men in jeoperdy of theyr lyves.”
Late 18th century First Cultivated Garden Strawberry
What we now call the 'garden strawberry' is first cultivated in this period, in Brittany, France.
1877 Offered at the First Wimbledon Tournament
200 spectators at Wimbledon court are offered strawberries and cream.
2012 Tesco Launches a New Sandwich
British retail company Tesco launches a strawberry and clotted cream sandwich, made of slices of berries between two cream-layered pieces of white poppy seed bread, with a dollop of strawberry jam — this is no longer on the market.

They herald the spring
They give your workout a little boost
They help your teeth look good too!
They are all over the world
A single strawberry has around 200 seeds, and each one has the genetic potential to become a new variety — that’s why breeders can develop so many varieties.

Plus, buying local is great for the environment, too. Think of how much fuel emissions you are reducing when you buy food that did not have to travel very far to get to you!
Popping these sweet and sometimes tart red fruits into our mouths is tantamount to a taste of happiness. Really! Strawberries are very rich in vitamin C, which is responsible for the production of endorphins in our brain, the hormone that makes you feel happy.

4. favourite dish specific for your country?
ooo tbis is a hard one. as opposed to the seemingly general consensus online that england has bad food, there's actually so much to choose from
i personally LOVE roast dinners (a roast meat, roast potatoes, veg like green beans parsnips suede etc, gravy, sometimes yorkshire pudding and red currant jelly). i had them once a week at school (normally wednesdays), but traditionally you have them on sundays with your family!
they're a classic pub dish, and are hard to mess up spectacularly. my favourite roast flicks between roast belly of pork or roast shoulder of lamb. sadly they're not vegan so u can't try one rain but they're a BANGER meal 10/10
also another banger is a full english breakfast. BEST hangover food ever i will fight you. also good airport breakfast
11. favourite native writer/poet?
england has a LOT of poets and writers to choose from, many of which are well known (not by me though).
i'm not much of a poetry enthusiast and i don't read books v often so i don't rly have an opinion on this. aaa i'll say virginia woolf bc she was indirectly involved in me asking out my gf
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
if it was for aliens species to enjoy.... a box set and dvd player of all of doctor who, i think they'd enjoy seeing what we think aliens are
ive never rly watched doctor who past a few episodes here and there, but it IS a british staple so
that and maybe a can of heinz baked beans :D

Eaton family, Roaring Heights - #37
For many days, everything in the household felt somewhat "sluggish, stagnant", a huge contrast to their old life when there were still no kids and their parents were still alive. No new adventures and activities, always just work and kids.
This was the reason Kim picked up a new hobby - inventing. Thanks to the improved library, Kim can just drive there with her junk metal and start tinkering in the workshop area there. She saw Sharla the other day messing with junk metal and came up with a beautiful sculpture, so she thought, why not try working with the material, too?
It still didn't satisfy her curiosity and thirst for excitement and new adventures, so she thought another way to solve that - become a vampire.
One early evening, the whole household decided to go to the winter festival grounds for a change of scenery and to have fun. Kim made it first to the festival grounds, while the couple were still with their kids going on a stroll to the park. She saw Alessandro there, a close friend who's also a famous actor and a vampire, so she asked him to turn her. Her arm became a bit itchy for a while.
The next day, before sunrise, the first snow of the season poured down on the dry, clean and quiet streets of Roaring Heights.

helloooo love yj was emotionally destroyed by latest ep but needed your take on the fact that 1) no one seemed to really react to last episodes beating? like there were some snide remarks at Shauna but otherwise hardly anything. Like I was feeling some residue anger towards her and her violence and I thought there *might* be some suggestion to sacrifice her instead. And secondly 2) how did they all get on the same page about killing through cards? Again I don't need them to discuss the steps or anything but just...some protests some dealing with the darkness of the matter....
1)
Lottie has SO much power over them at this point. Last week there was an interview with Courtney Eaton where she said that even thought Lott's on the brink of death here the other jackets still speak for her, and I think they really got this across (especially the way they keep cutting to her laying there, alone, like she's somehow following along with events she's not there for, and others are saying what she'd say, especially when Van says the wilderness chose Javi).
Nat says to Coach that if Lott did die it wouldn't be such a bad thing because of how much she's messed them all up, how heavily she's gotten into their heads. And she's completely right. The reality is that when Lott told Shauna to let it out, she wasn't just giving her permission, she was giving her an ORDER and nobody in the cabin was going to go against it. Shauna's not really held responsible for her actions, because it wasn't her choice, it was Lottie's.
Finally, Lott told her to do it because she said "We NEED you." If they'd have said "We should kill YOU to save Lottie" then they'd be abandoning everything that Lott had suffered for in the first place. They'd be saying that Lottie was wrong for getting Shauna to beat her in the first place.
2)
I think that the setup was there in terms of the way that Melissa and Gen had been talking in s2e7 about eating Kristen if they found her, Misty and Kristen had talked in s2e3 about enjoying eating Jackie, that Shauna had herself said it wasn't the worst thing, that Lottie had agreed that it was a good thing that they'd done, that they've been starving constantly ever since, that Ben's brought it up multiple times, that it's had to have been just CONSTANTLY on all of their minds.
I don't think that it's a taboo that you can break without it haunting you, and without it just... remaining in the back of your mind for the rest of your life. It'd fundamentally change the way that you look at other human beings, as potential food sources not just people. And moreover, it had SAVED them. And now they're starving, again. And they're not incorrect in that Lott's immune system is collapsing, her ability to heal from such damage is practically zero without food. In very brutal terms, she needs protein to repair.
(the actual medical reality of long term malnutrition is far more complex than that, but in the logic of the show, a solid meal will absolutely help)
And when we're talking about human sacrifice I think there's two aspects of it. The first is that they're talking spiritual. The Wilderness sees them, and helps them. If they give the Wilderness a life, maybe it'll give them one.
(Lottie herself said it doesn't work like this, but she's out of commission right now, and her grip on how it works isn't strong anyway, so in her absence this is 100% a thing they can grab onto)
The other aspect is pragmatic. A physical sacrifice of meat, of nutrients IS useful. But more than that... to the cult Lottie is the MOST important of them, the one they cannot live without, period. Van said "I can't imagine being here without her." And Lottie's already said that if she dies they should eat HER. She's already opened this can of worms, already sacrificed her own body, in theory. So they're not... so much attacking each other, as they are all volunteering to take her place on the chopping block, all for her sake (AND for the sake of each other, with the shared understanding that without Lottie they'll probably all die). Publicly acknowledging they're less important than her they're willing to sacrifice themselves for the whole.
See we're used to human sacrifice being this thing where you take someone ELSE and you kill them, for the sake of getting what you want. This is something else. This is taking YOURSELF, and sacrificing YOURSELF for a thing that's more important to you than your own life. To them... they think it's honourable, an act of love, not cruelty, or selfishness.
If it hadn't been Nat who got the queen, I doubt they would've put up any amount of fight. Because Nat's the only one at this point not really on board. Like, if it'd been Mari, she'd have probably cried or something but she'd not have argued, and nobody would've stepped in on her behalf.
The cards are just... a system they already had. If they had straws they'd have used those. They were already dividing up chores with the cards, it makes sense in their little world to use cards as a fair and random system. None of them WANT to die, none of them WANT to do the killing, they just see it as... another unpleasant thing that has to happen.
Which as a sidenote makes me think about the necklace. Jackie gave it to Shauna as an act of love and protection. Shauna gave it back as an act of love and protection. She took it back from Jackie's corpse in the same way. We're so used to seeing it as an ominous thing, but I think that when she put it on Nat it was meant in the same way, as a sign of ... this isn't personal, not malicious. It's love, it's hope that on the other side you're okay.

The Scottie Morris case is so sad but also kind of confusing. I just found out about it last night and if you haven’t heard, he’s a 14 year old from Eaton Indiana who has been missing since March 16th (of this year)
A lot of people are convinced the parents have been abusing him and honestly, I think so too. The night he disappeared (it’s being treated as a run away), he was forced to wear this white shirt with words written on it as a punishment. There was a crying face drawn and you can’t fully make out what it says but you can read that it says that he’s a liar, that he hurt his little brother
The parents took the picture and apparently they weren’t planning on putting it on social media (but I don’t believe that. The sole purpose of those kinds of things is for others to see it. I very much doubt they weren’t planning on sharing it). In the picture, you can also see that he was crying and his glasses look kind of messed up. Some people are saying you can see a couple bruises (I couldn’t see it myself but maybe I just missed it)
Not only that, but his sisters have gone on twitter and tiktok to badmouth him and are getting upset and name-calling people who are asking questions. But they’re also kind of contradicting what we’ve heard; one of them says that he was wearing the shirt because he was in trouble but then in another comment says it was because he didn’t have any other shirt to wear and that’s why he was wearing it
The aunt is also defending the parents and doesn’t see anything wrong with the shirt
The whole thing is strange and I just really hope the poor kid is okay

Jeremy, turning their head: …and then there's the disaster couple… Tobias: YOU NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO ME INSTEAD OF BEING AT THE HOSPITAL! Varian: I WOULDN'T HAVE TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME AT THE HOSPITAL IF YOU STOPPED INSISTING ON FIGHTING EVERYONE WHO COMES WITHIN A FIVE FOOT RADIUS OF YOU!
(put this in because I couldn't get jeremike and zukaang at the same time TvT)
The Squad when asked about their earlier confession of love Michael: Yeah, you're lucky. I like you. Jeremy: What did you two do? Michael: Tobias: Jeremy: You’re not in trouble, I just need to know if I have to lie to the police again or not.
(they'd get into stupid shit together, change my mind)
Tobias: For self defense reasons, I'm going to pretend to be a burglar and you guys have to act wisely. Varian, Zuko, & Aang: Okay. Tobias: If you don't want to die, give me all your money. Varian: Bold of you to aume I have money. Zuko: Bold of you to aume I don't want to die. Aang: Bold of you to a**ume I can die.
Aang: Why do you not believe that ghosts are real? Zuko: Never seen one. Aang: Okay, I mean, there’s a lot of things that you can’t see that are real. Zuko: What can’t I see? Aang: You can’t see gravity. That’s real. Zuko: Yeah, I can drop an apple. Aang: Monkey feathers.
Tobias: Varian told me to stop being immature, so I told them to get out of my fort.
Jeremy: Look, I know you think my judgement's clouded because I like Michael a little bit. Zuko, holding Jeremy's notepad: You doodled your wedding invitation. Jeremy: No, that's our joint tombstone. Zuko: My mistake.

Bond Street Bachelor (The Rakes of Rotten Row #5) by  Annabelle Anders
Thank you to Annabelle Anders and In For A Penny Publishing for sending this Advance Reader Copy (ARC). I'm giving an honest review of the book, all opinions are my own.
Publication date: ‎ August 8, 2024 Print length: ‎ 312 pages "Bond Street Bachelor is the fifth book in the Rakes of Rotten Row Series but can be read in any order, or as a stand-alone novel."
I think Leopold and Amelia may be my favorite couple in the Rakes of Rotten Row series. This is an opposite attracts tale with two people who never, ever would have met. The first time our male lead sees the female lead they were both at a party (he wasn't invited), he hid in the shadows and she looked right through him. I found Leopold to be the most layered fleshed out character while Amelia was more typical Ton young lady. The plot had me invested from page one and it moved at a nice pace. We get to check in on a few the previous couples with a small appearance by a couple of them as the story progresses.
Leopold isn't a typical bad guy character in that he has standards to his illicit business. No drugs or human trafficking, only goods and information. He takes care of the people who work for him and has made sure people from his past who want to work have a place in his organization. That he threw in with the Rotten Rakes to see a truly bad man delt with shows that he's nicer than he lets on. He tells himself the plan is just good business on his part. Self-made man, survived his horrid childhood, and with the help of a "mentor" thrived and became a criminal kingpin. He's handsome with enough scars to make him appear a bit dangerous; even though he dresses well you can tell he didn't go to Eaton. He's got plenty of attitude.
Amelia is a typical titled young lady who has to marry well and is silently screaming on the inside. Beautiful, intelligent, kind, and doesn't appear to be spoiled to death. Her parents pushed for an arrangement with a Marquess who ran off with her cousin. Of course, it's Amelias fault and now she has to marry a man her parents have been negotiating with to take her off their hands. Soiled goods even though she was an innocent victim in the whole mess. She becomes interesting when she's kidnapped and has an opportunity to let loose and find out who she is and what she wants for herself. Amelia called Leopold Mr. Beckworth through the story, inner dialog also, it was cute and kind of hot when they were up to no good.
An enjoyable read and I'm waiting on the next story, the Duke of Malum. How he's redeemed is going to be a chore to figure out.
