Serendipity
This was originally a prompt on here that I promised a follow up to, but got carried away.
The original prompt is in italics, so you can refresh yourselves on what it was!
Words: 3.6k
Rating: Mature
Read over on ao3, or below the cut.
Let me know what you think!
It should never have happened. Emily hadn’t intended for it to, and she knew Aaron hadn’t either. They hadn’t meant to fuck at JJ’s wedding, hidden in Dave’s guest bathroom as Aaron’s girlfriend danced with his son downstairs.
Things shifted between them that night. The dance they had shared, his hand in hers and his breath against her neck had ignited her skin, set something on fire that she had tried to ignore. Emily had tried to walk away, to put some distance between them. Aaron had followed her, knocking softly on the bathroom door when she had been in there a little too long.
Emily wasn’t entirely sure who kissed who first, but she remembered him pressing her up against the counter. How it felt when he pushed her dress over her hips, her own hands not idle as she undid his shirt, wanting to feel his skin against hers.
The aftermath had been awkward, but that hadn’t stopped it from happening again the following day. Him coming to hers for the coffee they had promised each other, ending up on the couch instead, clothes shed and desperate hands palming against each other's skin.
She stiffened when he said he had broken up with Beth, the gentle hope in his voice breaking her heart. Emily still remembered the look on his face when she said she was still going to London, his cheek against her hand.
She had been in London for two months before she called him, lied and said she was in town for a consult. Aaron obviously didn’t believe her, but he came to her hotel room anyway. Emily realises she should have known it would be inevitable, that they would have sex again. She wants him as much as he wants her and she has spent so much of her life denying herself the things she wanted. It isn’t lost on her that this is the first time they have done this in a bed, and she sits up as he gets dressed, the silence in the room deafening. She pulls on one of the robes hung up in the wardrobe, pulling the tie tight around her waist.
“Aaron, we still need to talk.”
He looks at her, his face stern. “Are you staying?”
Emily opens her mouth, unsure how to even begin to answer that question, to say what she needs to say. Aaron takes her hesitance as an answer, shrugging on his jacket as he shakes his head at her.
“I should go.”
“Aaron, please.”
“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t leave.” He says, his voice full of defeat and she hates that she's the one that put it there. That she caused the man who she cares for more than she should to feel anything other than happiness. Aaron turns to leave, his hand on the door of her hotel room and a heavy sigh escapes him. “See you next time you’re in town, Emily.”
Emily closes her eyes and wraps her arms around herself, pulling the robe she had put on tighter, as if it could hold her together in the soft material whilst she tells him what she came here to say. What she couldn’t bring herself to tell him on the phone.
“I’m pregnant.”
Aaron turns to look at her. Her eyes are fixed on the floor, her arms crossed tightly across her chest.
“Emily.”
She looks up at him, a small smile on her face. “I think it goes without saying it's yours.” She clears her throat awkwardly when he just stares at her, clearly trying to figure out what to say next. “We should sit down.”
She moves over to one of the armchairs in the corner of the room. She curls up into the chair, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. Emily feels relief ease some of the tension in her chest when he joins her, sitting in the chair next to hers.
“Are you ok?” He asks, and it makes her smile. Any frustration he had aimed at her had melted away, replaced by confusion and something she couldn’t quite place.
“I’m ok.” She answers. “Although morning sickness is the most poorly named thing on the fucking planet.” He laughs at that, and it’s nervous, making her raise an eyebrow at him. “Are you ok?”
He nods. “I think we have a lot of things to discuss.”
“Yeah.” She replies, swallowing against the lump in her throat. “We do.” ____________
The flight back to London is rough. Her constant nausea makes the hours drag by, her desperation to just be on solid ground almost overwhelming her.
She’s never been more grateful to see her apartment, the place still not quite feeling like home yet. She sinks into her couch and groans when her cell phone immediately rings, rolling her eyes when she sees Clyde’s name on the screen before she answers.
“Do you track me or something? I’ve only just made it back.”
“That's for me to know and you to wonder about, darling.” Clyde says, smugness in his voice that made her smile despite herself. “How did our dear Agent Hotchner take the news that he’s going to be a father again.”
“Quite well given the circumstances.” Emily answers, unwilling to divulge anymore of her conversation with Aaron to her friend, knowing if there was one person on the planet he wouldn’t want her to talk to about this it would be Clyde Easter.
“You’re going to go back aren’t you?”
Emily laughs, frustrated that he could read her so well even over the phone. “I don’t really have a choice, do I?”
“You always have a choice.”
“Not now.” She replies. She looks down at her abdomen, still flat with no indication of the life growing underneath her skin showing yet. “I can’t keep the baby from him, or him from the baby. He’s a great dad.”
“You left DC for a reason.”
Emily places her hand on her belly and smiles to herself. “And now I guess I have a reason to go back.” ____________
Aaron visits her a month later. His insistence on coming to London for a long weekend made her laugh. She feels nervous when she picks him up at the airport, but it fades away when she sees him.
It’s strange, having him there in her apartment, like two very distinct worlds were colliding. She liked it though, couldn’t help but smile as he walked around and made himself familiar with where she lived.
“I had a scan this morning.” She says, smiling at him nervously when he turns to look at her, his hands in the pockets of his jeans. “Would you like to see the picture?”
“Of course.”
She beams at him as she digs the scan photo out of her purse and hands it to him. “Everything looks good, even if I am a ‘geriatric mother.’’ She said, using air quotes as she spoke.
Aaron has the gall to laugh at her, which makes her raise her eyebrows at him. He steps towards her, ultrasound scan still in hand, and he hugs her. She hugs him back, breathes in the scent of his cologne. She pulls back enough to look at him, and before she can think better of it she leans forward and kisses him. It crosses the delicate line they hadn’t crossed since he had left her hotel room a month ago, still reeling from the life changing news he had told him. They’d been in contact every day since, exchanging texts and phone calls around both of their gruelling work schedules. They’d been acting like friends, nothing more, but her hands grasping the back of his head, pulling him closer to her, changed that.
“Wait.” He says against her lips, pulling away so he could look at her. “Is this a good idea?”
Emily heaves in a breath and licks her lips before looking at his. “Maybe not.” She presses another quick kiss to his lips. “But it’s not like you can knock me up again.”
He stares at her for a second before pulling her back into him, kissing her fiercely as she drags him to her bedroom. ____________
They don’t talk about anything important until the day he leaves, neither of them wanting to ruin the little bubble they had created in her apartment. It’s him that tentatively brings up her plans over the breakfast they had ordered in.
“When are you coming back?”
“In three months.” She says as she takes a sip of her tea. “That’s when my replacement can start here, and when the role at the DC Interpol office opens up.”
Aaron frowns at her. “The DC Interpol office?”
Emily nods. “It’s essentially what I’m doing now.” She senses his confusion and clears her throat as she sets her mug back down. “I was never going to be coming back to the bureau, Aaron.”
“It’s your choice, I just thought you would have mentioned it.”
Emily can feel her temper flaring, annoyance rising up in her before she can stop it. “We’re not in a relationship, Aaron. Just because we fucked a few times and accidentally made a baby doesn’t mean I have to run everything past you.”
He stares at her, a hard look on his face. It seems to take him a moment to speak, and the way he carefully chooses his words pisses her off even more. “Would you even be coming back if it wasn’t for the baby, Emily?”
She looks at him, her fury written all over her face. “No. I wouldn’t be.”
He leaves pretty quickly, claiming he needs to get to the airport even though his flight isn’t for another 12 hours.
____________
After that they speak less often. She updates him on the baby and he asks her how she is, how both of them are doing.
When she starts to show she takes a photo of her bump and sends it to him. The next day a package from Amazon arrives full of pregnancy skin care, a gift note from Aaron that tells her Haley had sworn by the bump cream. The tenderness of the gesture makes her cry, the affection she feels for him almost bursting out of her chest.
She calls him when she finds out they are having a boy, her enthusiasm seeping down the phone and filling his voice with wonder.
As she boards the plane to DC 3 months after she last saw him, all of her belongings shipped, she feels something a little bit like hope bloom in her chest. ____________
Aaron comes to visit her at her apartment almost as soon as she gets back, a smile on his face and a bag of takeout in his hand.
“Hi.” She says, almost shyly as she lets him in.
“Hi.” He kisses her cheek before he thinks about it, pulling her into a hug. He steps back and looks down at her abdomen. “Wow.”
Emily laughs, her hand landing on her belly. “Yeah, he’s getting big.” She takes the bag of food from him. “We should eat.”
They eat and make conversation, and it’s as if 3 months of awkward conversation between them hadn’t happened. He asks her about Sergio, and she says Penelope would be keeping him for now, but that she had full visitation rights.
Aaron clears up the plates, and she rolls her eyes at him as he tells her to put her feet up. She feels the awkwardness seep back in when he sits on the couch next to her, the unanswered questions hanging in the air.
“I’ll get you your own key.” Emily says, tearing her eyes from her lap to look at him. “It makes sense for you to just be able to come over, see the baby whenever.”
He nods, an awkward smile on his face. “I’ll get you one to my place too. Jack keeps asking when you’re coming over.”
“That’s sweet. I missed him.”
“He missed you. We both did.” It’s awkward again for a moment, and she can see the second he decides to simply say whatever he had been holding back for months. “What are we, Emily?”
She sighs. “I don’t know, Aaron.” She grabs his hand and squeezes it. “I care about you. So much. But if we hadn’t had sex at JJ’s wedding we wouldn’t even be here right now. How is that the foundation of a relationship?”
“By itself it might not be, but we have a lot more than that.” He cups her cheek. “We’ve known each other for years. I know I’m not the only one who has felt that there could be more between us.”
Emily closes her eyes and rests her forehead against his. “There is so much more at stake now.” She puts their joint hands on her bump. “We can’t mess anything up for him, or Jack.”
“Don’t we owe it to them, to us, to try?”
She pulls back enough for her nose to brush against his. Emily decides that she’s going to let herself have what she wants. She nods before she kisses him, sighing as they both lean further into it. She breaks off with a laugh when she feels the baby kick against their hands.
Aaron looks down at her stomach in wonder. “He’s kicking?”
She nods at him. “He’s kicking.”
For the first time since the test came back positive she genuinely feels like everything might work out. ____________
By the time she's 8 months pregnant she is spending the vast majority of her time at his apartment, even when he was away on a case, and she tries to ignore what that means. That she’s 2 months into a relationship with a man and practically living with him and his son. Whilst being pregnant with his second son.
Her mother had always told her that she didn’t do anything by half.
Emily is sitting on a park bench, watching Jack play on the swings, with her hand pressed into her belly when she feels it. The familiar feeling of being watched. She feels a shiver run down her spine, goosebumps raising over her body.
Her first instinct is that it’s Ian. All of her logical thoughts that he was dead, that she’d watched him die, being beaten by the anxiety coursing through her. Every reason she had left DC in the first place comes flooding back and she has to take several deep breaths. The feeling doesn’t go away, she looks around the park quickly. She can’t see him, can’t see anyone that looks like they’d be associated with him, but she feels like she needs to leave. Like she needs to get Jack, and her baby, back home as quickly as possible.
She’s about to walk over to Jack, make him leave his friends so she could take him home, when she hears a familiar voice.
“Emily?” She whips round to see Beth standing next to her, an awkward look on her face as she takes in Emily’s appearance. “I saw you from across the park, I thought it was you.”
“Beth. Hi.” She tries to smile. “How have you been?”
“Good.” She nods. She looks at her again, eyes landing on Emily’s bump. The unspoken understanding from the other woman that she was pregnant with Aaron’s child. “You look well.”
Emily’s smile falters. The last time she had seen Beth had been at JJ’s wedding, the night she’d had sex with Aaron when his girfriend was just downstairs. Beth would know that. Emily knew that Aaron was a good enough man to have told her everything when he broke up with her.
“I am really sorry, Beth. For how everything happened.”
Beth laughs and sits on the bench next to her. “That is almost exactly word for word what Aaron said when we got back to his place after JJ and Will’s wedding.” Beth looks over to where Jack is playing and smiles. “I knew something had happened, neither of you were very subtle.”
Emily feels her baby roll in her belly and she presses her hand to it, hoping the gentle circles soothe her son as well as herself.
“I...I guess saying we didn’t mean for it to happen won’t mean much.”
“It doesn’t.” Beth says, a wry smile on her face as she turns back to Emily. “But are you both happy?”
Emily doesn’t even have to think about it. “Yeah. We are.”
“Then maybe it was all worth it.” Beth says as she stands. “I should get going, tell Jack and Aaron I said hi.”
“You should say hi to Jack.”
“It’s ok. I don’t want to confuse him.” Beth smiles at Emily one last time. “Tell Aaron I’m glad he’s happy.” ____________
Aaron gets back to his apartment, the case he had been on two days too long for his liking, to find Emily fast asleep on the couch, wearing one of his shirts and a pair of leggings, with her hand pressed into her stomach. He smiles as he hangs up his keys and sets the alarm, setting his briefcase down on the side. He walks over to the couch and sits on the edge of it, gently waking her. She opens her eyes and looks at him.
“You’re home.” She murmurs, the roughness to her voice giving away that she’s been asleep for a while.
He hums in his throat as he strokes his hand over her head. “Why are you on the couch, you know it doesn’t do your back any good.”
“I was waiting up for you.” She sits up slowly, accepting his help to get her upright. Emily leans against his side as he sits next to her, smiling when he puts one of his palms on her belly and kisses the top of her head. “I missed you.”
“Missed you too.” He tilts her head and kisses her properly, feeling her smile against his lips as the baby rolls in her stomach. “How are you?”
“Good.” Emily answers. “My entire body is sore. But good.”
He hums his sympathy and rubs his hand over her stomach, the baby forever active in a way he knew had caused Emily to lose sleep.
“I’d like to take you on a date.” He says, smiling as Emily pulls back from him, a look of curiosity on her face. “I realised today that I've never taken you on one.”
“Aaron.” She replies, a smile on her face. “I’m 8 months pregnant with your son, I think we’re a little past dating.”
“True, but you have only just agreed to be my girlfriend.” He laughs when she scrunches her nose at him, leaning down to kiss the tip of it. “What?”
“The word ‘girlfriend’ makes it sound like I’m 14, not in my 40s.”
Aaron smiles at her again and kisses her, smiling against her lips. “Well, I’d propose to you so you could call me your fiancée, but I worry that would send you running back to London.”
Emily laughs, kissing him again quickly. “I wouldn’t run away, but I might check if you were feeling ok.” She rests her head against him again. “I saw Beth today.”
He stiffens, his arms tightening around her. “How was that?”
“Awkward.” She answers, turning her head to kiss his shoulder through his shirt. “But she was very nice. Nicer than I might have been in her shoes.”
“I’m glad.” He kisses the top of her head. “What else?”
“What do you mean?”
“What else happened?”
She scoffs. “Can’t keep anything from you.” She sighs. “I could tell someone was watching me, and before Beth came over I thought it was Ian.” He doesn’t say anything, and it spurs her on. “I know he’s dead, that I don’t have to be afraid anymore, but I was for so long.” She feels her emotions rise in her chest, tears flooding at her eyes as she was at the mercy of her hormones. “And I have so much more to lose now.” She wipes her face. “You, Jack. The baby.”
He kisses the top of her head again, then her temple, holding her impossibly tighter. “You aren’t going to lose any of us, sweetheart.” He tilts her chin so he can kiss her properly. “This is it now. Forever.”
She ignores the voice in her head that tells her he can’t promise her that, and she nods.
“If that’s a proposal I’m leaving.” She jokes and it makes him laugh, his forehead pressed against hers.
“Trust me, baby. You’ll know when I’m proposing.” ____________
He takes her on a date the following week. She lets him take her to a restaurant and spoil her, and he doesn’t make any comments when she orders enough food for at least 3 people for herself.
He takes her for ice cream after, going into the store and getting it himself so she doesn’t have to get back out the car, her ankles sore and swollen.
That night they lay in his bed, the one she really knows is theirs, and as he runs his fingers up and down her bare spine she drifts off to sleep.
“I love you.” She whispers into the room, the first time she has said it to him.
She stays awake long enough to hear him say it back. ____________
It should never have happened, but when their son, Benjamin, is born three weeks later Emily is so glad it did.

Happy Mothers Day, Euphemia
it's not how I wanted it, but I really wanted to write something about it, especially after seeing @constancezin art - here
Happy Mother's Day to you who are a mother, whether biological or not, and a very tight hug to all those who have lost their mother or child in recent times <3
-----
He had that weekend off, and Sirius usually came home, but it wasn't a big celebration and he was probably going to stay in his room, and just go out to eat. He wasn't very welcome at the celebration the way Reg was, so he just went out for… Sirius didn't think much, maybe he still hoped that something was different.
It was the first time he had gone out and gone home with James, since he ran away from home on vacation last year, it was making him more nervous than usual.
‘I don’t know if it’s a good idea, mate, I mean, she’s your mother and-’
'Sirius, Mom will die if you don't show up.' James interrupted him. 'Let's go.'
Now that he was there, and that Sunday had finally arrived, Sirius felt more anxious than ever, since the time he woke up and saw Mont setting up the most stuffed breakfast he had ever seen.
Things were not as affectionate as they were in the Potter's.
Of course he had bought a gift for Euphemia, on Saturday afternoon he went with James to the city for his friend to buy something, and Sirius took the opportunity to buy something too, even if he did not know if he should or not, because well, Euphemia it was not his mother, and his true mother hated him as death.
At lunchtime there were no fancy clothes, they took advantage of the good weather and ate in the garden, and there was that conversation and interaction that always made Sirius love going to James' house. Mia and Mont worried about how James and Sirius's year was going, if everyone was fine, talked about things that had happened to them, and talked to the two as if they four were the same. It was something new for Sirius, to say the least.
He didn't give Mia's gift in front of everyone, of course, but she made no comment as if she expected it, and hugged him the same way she hugged James when the boy handed over the book she had been asking for so long, as if Sirius had also participated in the choice of the present. She kissed him on the forehead and smiled at him, saying that she loved that he had chosen to come too, and that it was great to have him there.
It was a little difficult to hold back the tears after that, but Sirius did.
In the afternoon, when Mont and James decided to go down to the basement to see if there was any beer ready, Sirius felt it was the right time. Euphemia was in the living room, playing the piano, and he thought it was the best time to deliver the gift.
He picked up the package carefully, taking the brief card he had made for her, and then went into the living room, listening to the woman play what appeared to be Muggle music, but Sirius was too nervous to pay attention.
‘Mia?’ He called out to her, and she stopped playing and looked over her shoulder at him.
'Do you want to play with me? I feel like you know better than I do.' She gave him a seat on the bench, getting closer to the window that lit her up.
'Of course, but, huh ... Before.' Sirius went over there, with his legs a little wobbly, and handed the package to her, who pretended not to notice the boy's trembling hands. 'Happy Mothers Day.'
'Oh dear, you didn't have to.' Mia smiled, her brown eyes shining behind her glasses. She carefully opened the package, stopping to read the letter and smiling towards Sirius, this time, he thought he saw tears in her eyes.
'I hope you like it, I remembered that you said yours was ending.' He said, feeling even more nervous than before, hands behind his body, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. Mia took the perfume out of the silver package, smiling even more, and then getting up to hug he again.
'You didn't have to worry, my dear, just by having you here I was more than happy,' she whispered, her voice sounding shaky, tightening the hug even more.
It was still strange to win so many hugs, Sirius felt a little uncomfortable, but he would never say that to her, he just hugged her back, trying to control the stupid tears that wanted to escape.
'Thank you for wanting me here, Mia,' he whispered, his voice even more broken than the woman's.
'I thank you for coming.' She broke away from him, holding Sirius' face in her delicate hands, smiling lovingly at him. He thought he couldn't take it that long if she continued to look at him that way, as she used to look at James, it was too much for him. 'I love you, Sirius, our home is your home too.'
'Don't say that, Mia, I'm going to be too loose.' Sirius joked, just to be able to focus on not crying, and hugged her again. 'I love you, too.' He didn't want to tell her that this was the first time someone had said this to him in some good years, since he didn't even remember the last time his mother said that, Sirius didn't want to take it out the smile on Euphemia's face.
'Thanks for the gift, I was in need of a new perfume, but you shouldn't have spent your money on me.' They parted ways, she placed the perfume next to the book that James had given, on the coffee table, next to the flower that Mont had bought it, displaying the gifts proudly. 'Sit here now, let's play together, we haven't done that in a long time.'
'Didn't we do that at Easter?' He asked, smiling, sitting next to her.
'So, a long time.' Mia smiled, giving another kiss on his cheek, and running her hand through his hair as if she wanted to fix it. 'I'm very happy that you came, Sirius, and I'm very proud to see you so grown up, and to think that when I met you you were smaller than James.' He felt his cheeks catch fire and his throat lock with a wave of feelings that invaded him, but all he did was laugh.
'Now I am bigger than him. And you. 'Euphemia nodded, smiling from ear to ear. 'Thank you for welcoming me.' Sirius kissed her hair, in a quick display of affection that was safe enough that he wouldn't break in front of her.
'You are a golden boy, dear ... Let's play.'

Pairing: Pre Apocalypse!Wilhemina x Reader
Word count: 4186
Tumblr media
Valentines Day
You’d finally made Wilhemina a valentine’s card, after several failed attempts at finding violet paper online, and signed it ‘From your secret admirer’. It made you laugh to yourself as you did it, not believing for a second that she’d fall for it. Sneaking out of her grasp in the bed the next morning, you’d buried the card within all the post at the foot of the door, before returning to your girlfriends’ warmth.
You’d both silently agreed that the day would be relatively normal, which meant no lie-ins despite the occasion. You also both had work to be getting to; long office hours which dragged in the absence of each other. The day was inherently normal, and boring so you found yourself anxious to return and relax with your girlfriend in the evening.
Upon arrival back home, you were met with Wilhemina sat at the table, your card held up in her fingers, a playful smirk set on her face. She’d obviously returned and began to sort through the mail that had been disregarded that morning, finding your card within the mess. You quickly fumbled to hand up your coat and kick the shoes into the footwell before making your way over to her in the kitchen.
“Secret admirer hmm?” she mused, eyes flicking back to the writing in the card. “Looks like you may have some secret competition eh Y/n. What do you think?”
Ignoring the humorous shake of your head, she pushed a card across the table with the letter opener, which was addressed to you in Wilhemina’s staple neat handwriting. “Ooooh” you teased, slowly prising it from beneath her finger and shaking it at her, smiling. The card was small and delicate, with Mina’s loopy writing across the page in her favourite deep purple ink. Pressed flowers adorned the front of the cards, arranged in a bouquet and you gasped at it.
Little one, I am so grateful I can share such occasions as this with you, and I hope to make our own festivity traditions in our future. Happy Valentines Day. From your love, Wilhemina Venable <3
Seen as you were busy smiling at the fact she always signed her full name, and blushing down at your feet at how she wanted to make traditions with you; you failed to notice the small paper package Wilhemina had drawn from a bag beside where she sat.
You were shocked when she pressed the parcel into your hands, eyes darting from the gift up to meet hers and returning slowly to what was in your palms. “What’s this?” you quizzed, hand coming to playfully nudge the woman sat in front of you to hide the surprise you felt at receiving a present.
A faint blush painted her cheeks, and an uncharacteristic nervousness overcame her, hands joining on her cane in front of her as you held the small, wrapped box up. Mina was nervous in case you thought she was going soft, or that the gift was unnecessary and unpractical, so you’d hate it. Her worries were uncalled for though, you’d loved any gift she had bought you previously and would continue to do so in the future.
As the paper was removed to reveal a CD in a blank case you couldn’t help but let confusion cross your face momentarily. Looking up to your girlfriend, she tentatively removed the disk from the casing and ushered you to sit before her.
“It’s a mixtape. I always hear you singing to music in the kitchen when you think I’m not listening, so I found the songs and made you this. I know you could very easily get a playlist nowadays but I’m not incredibly informed in all this new technology you see.” She paused, allowing you to lace your fingers between hers on top of her cane. “I wanted you to know that I don’t want you to have to hide something you love to do because you think I’d disapprove. Your voice is quite beautiful, my dear.”
You were speechless, simply just staring at your girlfriend in disbelief at the effort she had gone to, to give you a gift you’d cherish. You tried to say something but your voice caught in your throat, mouth opening and closing again. At your lack of a response, Mina’s face fell slightly and her fingers twitched on the cane she held.
“You hate it.” She stated, clearing her throat and face tightened, trying to avoid looking disappointed at your reaction. That broke your trance, head shaking rapidly and turning to cup her face in your hands, shocking her as you did.
“It’s perfect. You’re perfect. Thank you.”
“You’ve just made my card look bad now, that’s all.” You admitted, laughing softly and shrugging. She chuckled lightly, placing the CD back in its casing on the table and standing, hand finding yours and pulling you into her.
“I can think of another gift you can give to me little one.”
April Fools
You glanced over your shoulder at your girlfriend reading the book she’d recently found on the shelf, occasionally stopping to spoon muesli into her mouth before returning to the words. Happy that she wasn’t observing your actions, distracted by her book, you subtly spooned a teaspoon of salt into the mug on the left, and sugar into the other.
The clink of the metal spoon against the ceramic filled the kitchen, the noise oddly soothing and domestic in the otherwise heightened buzz of life. You picked up both mugs, bending slightly at the knee as you walked to the table. Wilhemina nodded as you placed the left mug beside her bowl; eyes not leaving the pages they were fixed on.
“Would you be dear and get the milk for me?” She asked just before you sat at the chair opposite and you obliged, crouching at the fridge before returning with the milk. She thanked you when you placed the milk down and settled in your chair, breathing heavily and scribbling on the crossword beside you.
Placing the book down, she gripped her mug between her hands, warming fingers against the ceramic, nails tapping slightly.
You met her eyes over the rim of both of your mugs, hers glinting with what looked suspiciously like mischief. You watched her take a big drink from her mug, tipping your own head back and doing the same as to not arouse your own suspicion, breaking your eye contact as you did so.
“Urghg what the?-” you spluttered, coughing at the harsh taste that invaded your mouth. You’d taken a very large gulp, not expecting the jarring taste prompting you to swallow and choke on the still hot tea. Calming down, you looked up at Mina, who was contently sipping at her drink, eyes bright and playful. Lowering the mug, you could see her lips pulled into a smug grin as she settled comfortably back into her chair, bemused at watching you trying to figure out how she’d managed to pull the wool over your eyes.
You groaned in defeat, head falling into your hands dramatically. You’d fallen for her trick, getting that milk that she never even touched. You didn’t notice. Why did you think she didn’t know what day it is. Wilhemina pushed herself up  from her chair, hovering over your still hunched form. “Nice try little one” she cooed, patting your hair before leaving the room to get herself ready for work.
You huffed, arms crossing at your chest, smirk pulling at your lips at the fact she’d actually joined in on the pranks. Despite now having a disgusting taste in the back of your mouth, you felt happy at the fact you’d been challenged.
‘Oh it is on’ you thought to yourself, brain already wandering to things that could get Wilhemina back.
Easter
“I hate chocolate” she stated bluntly, making no attempt to take the egg from where you were eagerly holding it out to her.
“No one hates chocolate Wilhemina” you sulked, arms pushing the chocolate furter towards her, a pout set firmly onto your face. She gingerly took it from you, weighing it between her hands and looking at you through amused eyes.
“I made a rabbit pie for the festivities”
“You made a what- No. No!” you beckoned her with a finger to come closer as if you were to divulge a deep secret. You whispered urgently, “You baked the Easter bunny!” you feigned offence, as she scoffed at your theatrics.
You stopped. “Wait. Where did you even get a rabbit?” you stared, eyes wide in shock as she let a soft chuckle escape her lips, hand tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear as she did. “It’s chicken darling. Don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”
Holding the egg up and giving it a wave at you she spoke. “Share this with me then? It is a very copious amount of chocolate for one person to enjoy” she smiled, enjoying the way your face lit up at her request. Beaming, you quickly pecked her jaw before giddily skipping into the other room. Mina stayed for a second, bringing her fingers up to brush where your lips had lingered.
Birthday
Wilhemina carefully lifted the tin out of the oven with one hand, the other clutched desperately at her cane, steadying herself from accident. Stretching up and sliding the cake onto the tabletop, she let a deep breath out, thankful to have been able to complete this baking malarkey without hitch. Needless to say, Wilhemina was not one for such domestic acts, as baking a cake for a loved one or planning a surprise that wasn’t a casual act of viciousness.
The cake looked too simple for Wilhemina’s high standards when she’d prised it out of the tin and onto a plate. It was a very humble cake, which she would have been quite happy with had it just been her birthday; but she needed it to have a little more character since she new how eccentric you could be.
A candle and a small sprig of lavender later, and she nodded proudly to herself. The cake looked exactly as it had done before; only now it had a candle and some lavender perched on top ridiculously. The sight would have made anyone else laugh, but Wilhemina didn’t see the need for excessive decoration when the cake was meant to be the centrepiece. It was, after all, the thing she’d just spent over two hours preparing, and having unnecessary distractions from it was not something she required.
You skipped through from the living room at the sound of her calling for you, stopping still when she shouted “CLOSE YOUR EYES!!” Raising your arms in exasperation and dropping them dramatically at your sides again you stood by the doorframe. “How am I supposed to come in when I can’t see where I’m going” you sassed, arms coming to cross at your chest. Wilhemina scoffed, ignored your lip, instead guiding you forward to sit at the table and settling herself, leaning on the back of the chair opposite.
“Open them.”
As you took in the sight of her with the cake candidly placed in front of you, a warm grin formed on your lips, stretching wider when her lips curled up to match yours in glee. You pictured her swaying in the kitchen to classical music, wrapped in your favourite yellow apron with a dusting of flour on her nose.
“You made this?” you giggled, plucking the lavender out of the cake and smelling it. “Yes. Don’t act so surprised little miss. Want a piece?”
She turned to retrieve a knife and plates and you struggled to bite back a surprised laugh, a small giggle escaping as you did. She stopped and turned at the noise, eyebrow quipped in question as your hands lingered in front of your mouth, grin still firmly in place. “Mina. Turn around.” She slowly did as you asked, the flour print on her butt coming back into your view, a stark contrast from the deep purple skirt.
You couldn’t help the laughter that erupted from you, bending over to clutch at your aching stomach. Wilhemina at first went rigid, hand trying to inconspicuously wipe the flour from her dress when she realised the source of your laughter. Then she took in how your shoulders shook, and you let out a little snort, and she found herself laughing as well, hand on the table for support as you both gasped at each other.
When the laughter had bubbled to nothing, you both sat eating the cake and discussing weekend plans. The cake was vanilla; plain, but so incredibly Wilhemina it made your heart ache with pride at her first edible cake being made for your birthday. “It is not as bad as I had bargained it to be.” She hummed, fork between her teeth as you used yours to pick up crumbs from the plate.
“It was delicious. Thank you for making it for me, I know how you hate to bake.”
Nodding at your compliment, she gathered the plates towards her and pointed towards the front door. “Fetch my bag sweetheart?” she asked, sighing into the back of the chair, watching you rise to do as she asked. While you searched for her bag she clattered the dishes into the sink and retired into the living room, sinking down into the armchair.
“Thank you.” She breathed, taking the bag from your hands and motioning for you to sit at her feet on the carpet. This was a usual position the two of you found yourselves in, your head resting in her lap. Watching her, she pulled out two parcels from her bag, setting them in from of you on her lap.
She’d bought you a pale lilac lacey lingerie set and a desk organiser- always the one for practicality over vanity.  Having overheard you complaining about your work desk always being littered with stationary and hazardly strewn papers no matter how many times you’d clear it, she’d taken it upon herself to right the issue.
You weren’t surprised at her observance, as she had the sharpest eye of anyone you knew; but you were touched that she’d taken the time to find items she new you needed and wanted out of her otherwise very busy days.
Wilhemina never liked outward shows of emotion or physical affection in the early stages of your relationship, even in the confides of your private home; so she was thoroughly taken aback when you launched yourself into her. “Thank you Mina, I love them.” You squeezed her tighter, careful to avoid the curve of her spine in your giddy excitement. Overcoming the initial shock, she slowly encased you in her arms, inhaling into your hair that sat just to the side of her face.
“Happy Birthday little one.”
Bonfire night (apologises if this is just a British thing)
“There you go, little one. We can’t have you getting cold now can we?” She tightened the scarf around your neck, fastening it and patting it down, pausing to flash her eyes down your body. You were buried in enough layers to warm the dead, arms poking out at an angle because they couldn’t lie flat. Your flushed face peeked out between hat and scarf, smile fixed on your lips as you watched her fix her own scarf into place, her own outfit lacking the excessive amount of layers she claimed you needed.
You bit back a comment about never being cold again in all this wool as she nuzzled her face into yours. “Lets go!” you squealed, grasping her cane from where it stood, propped against the wall and pushing it into her waiting hands. Wrapping your arm around her waist you opened the door, cold wind pushing into the house, and ushered you both out into the night.
Your town was holding a bonfire night firework display which you’d convinced Mina would be a beautiful thing to watch together. She’d let you know her disdain for the occasion; how it had come about because of an old man wanting to blow up the Houses of Parliament who was consequently put to death. Gruesomely, she added; sparing you none of the details of his demise. She also pointed out the mistakes in the plot that she insisted she would not have made if she’d wanted to do such a thing.
Once you’d guided Mina over the softened grass of the field, careful to prevent her from slipping on the mud of a slight slope, you both settled together near the fence so she could use it for support should she need it. The fireworks started, intrusive bangs and bright light flooding your senses which somehow managed to hold their beauty, despite their obtrusiveness.
You stood in front of her; your back to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around your waist pulling you against her in the darkness that encased you. Although there was quite a crowd in the field with you for the display, you only felt the presence of your lover behind you. Her warmth seeped through into you, her warm breath on your cheek leaving smoky vapours to curl around your face in the night.
It was cold. But Wilhemina made you warm.
“You see that lilac one there?” pointing skywards at the firework and burying her chin into your shoulder. “They use potassium to get that colour, see?” Another purple firework exploded in front of you, reinforcing her point.
Turning your face towards her, nosing bumping when she didn’t pull away, you gazed at her. Despite her previous opposition for attending the fireworks, you didn’t miss how her eyes glistened when they would pop in the sky, eyelids fluttering as they’d descend in shimmering light through the atmosphere. “I love you.” You confessed, in awe at her knowledge and how she never let you feel unsafe in her presence.
“I love you too my darling. Now, you see that red one up there?”
Christmas
“It’s Christmas” you hummed, craning your neck to pepper Wilhemina with kisses over her closed eyes until they fluttered open and fixed you with a fake annoyed look. “What do you want me to do about that?” she huffed in fake annoyance, batting you away to pull herself out of bed, smoothing the covers down behind you.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, You and Mina had had many conversations about how Christmas day would go, seen as you were an avid celebrater of the day and she would merely go about her day normally if you’d allow it. Meeting in the middle, you’d agreed upon a cosy and relaxed day at your home; cooking dinner together and wearing matching jumpers.
Okay, so Wilhemina hadn’t exactly agreed to wearing any sort of Christmas attire, never mind matching with you. In fact, she’s been explicitly vocal in her opposition of the idea. Naturally, you’d gone ahead and bought two matching jumpers anyway, knowing she’d cave in with a little persuasion on your part.
“But Mina.” You whines, childishly tugging on her sleeve as she prepped the carrots and potatoes for dinner. “I even toned down my choice, just for you.” She stopped, quirking an eyebrow in question and handing you the peeler to continue while she checked on the turkey. “Well, I was going to buy ones with bells on. But I didn’t! I chose a borringg one just for you.” You pestered, dragging out the sentence and flicking a piece of carrot at her, grinning stupidly.
She finally gave in after you promised to stop mithering her and allow you to cook quietly, the steady thrum of the Christmas music outside washing calm over the both of you, now donned in matching Rudolph jumpers, working in synchronised unison without having to talk. Mina liked it like this, and you were content to sway lightly and hum a quiet carol to yourself.
The dinner you made was absolutely the most beautiful thing you’d experienced with Wilhemina. Both sat in jumpers, walls completely down for the other and simply existing alongside the person you loved most in the world, eating Christmas lunch and laughing. Really laughing. At the corny jokes in the crackers, to the way your paper hat drooped down over your eyes making Mina fawn.
After the dinner you moved seamlessly to the living room, wordlessly content to leave the dishes for later. Resuming the usual position of Wilhemina in the chair and you kneeling at her feet, head in her lap as her nails lightly scraped at your scalp. The gifts under the tree had been moved to allow you to reach them from where you sat, Mina guiding you with a nod about which gift you were to open first.
Wilhemina had provided you with gifts that held hidden meaning behind them, but were more material than she’d usually purchase; for example the earrings you’d fawned over when you shopped together one day that she just couldn’t help but nip back on a lunch break to retrieve. She’d also gotten you her favourite book that you’d yet to read, even after insisting months ago. “Now you’ve no excuse but to read it. It really is an exquisite book Y/n.”
All of her gifts were perfectly wrapped in her signature brown paper and secured with a curled purple ribbon. Setting them under the tree had proved a challenge for the redhead but she’d been insistent that she place them herself when you offered. “No. I purchased these gifts, so I will be the one to arrange them under the tree.”
You had taken a more practical approach to her presents, knowing she was not one for material goods, nor small sentimental items that would be lost or forgotten about in the rush of your lives within a week. You’d clumsily wrapped your gifts in glittery silver wrapping paper which left silver glitter over everything it touched. It made Wilhemina’s nose scrunch up in distaste as she unwrapped them, her hands sparkling in the glow of the light with glitter.
After some arguments with yourself over the best practical gifts for your girlfriend, you’d settled on a deep mauve weighted blanket which could ease her back pain on difficult days and simply be a comfort on others. Accompanying that, you’d bought her some more leather fingerless gloves and another expensive cane with silver piping and a hummingbird engraved deep into the wood of the handle.
She’d gasped when unwrapping the cane, as you did the earrings, at the intricacy of the detail running through them. Lingering kisses and warm touches followed the gift giving, basking in the glow of the fire in the living room where you knelt by her chair, neck craned to meet your lover in a kiss against her soft lips.
Wilhemina had started to ramble again about the ridiculous notions of Christmas, face flushed with the alcohol, face serious as you gazed up from your position of the floor, equally buzzed with inebriation as your counterpart. “The insinuation that St Nicholas can visit ever child’s home in one night is simply-“she faltered, hiccupping and waving an arm for effect, “-is simply just abhorrently, scientifically wrong. I could never entertain the idea.”
“And as for the idea tha-” you silenced her with another kiss, rising from the floor to straddle her lap and press your body against hers. “I love you.” You breathed, head resting in her neck and fingers numbly playing with her loose hair.
You stayed in that position, happy in each other’s embrace as the evening drew on. Fingers tangled lazily within hair and other fingers and shaped were traced on bare skin. Whispered stories of pasts were shared and comfort given when needed, tears wiped by the careful brush of a thumb. Eventually you fell asleep, mind blank and peaceful after the first of many shared Christmas days between you both.
New Years Eve
“You’ve never kissed anyone on New Years Eve before?” you quizzed, cocking your head at the older woman beside you, who crossed her arms across her chest and huffed dramatically.
“I have simply never been in the company of anyone I wished to share such an intimacy with” she chimed back, before softening and smiling down at you, “until you my dear.”
The clock chimed and you smiled up at her, fingers dancing behind her neck as you pulled her down to meet you in a kiss. She relaxed into you and you felt her smile against your lips, hands reaching for your waist to pull you flush against her.
As the chimes faded, you let yourself slip from her embrace, thumb coming up to brush over her swollen lower lip as you blushed. “Happy New Year Mina.” You whispered, head falling to her chest as you wrapped your arms around her in a hug.
Patting your back a few times; still quite unsure about such acts of physical attention, she finally allowed herself to relax. Melting into your body, her chin rested on the top of your head, dipping only to linger a kiss in the hair.
“Happy New Year Y/n.”

last night i dreamt, amongst other things, that lieb schrieber and his loyal but menacing german shepherd were trying to murder me as i climbed thru an open window into a house and then from bengali family balcony to hiding under a bengali family charpai to hitching a lift with some australian tourists in an SUV to swinging from the outside of a building to climbing an endless set of stairs to suddenly heading a version of the college magazine where no one acknowledged my authority to being bullied at a camp by a group of girls from north campus whom i can only describe as Oppressed But Chic which if u live in Delhi u know exactly what i'm talking about and then i was at a cemetery in Easter with my Nana and he said it was essential that i feed a tortoise this Easter but the tortoise did not want to eat soggy lettuce leaves and so it rolled itself up inside a cardboard sheet reminiscent of the kind that is used to package ramen in 7/11s and rolled tf away from us and then d was there and it was super awkward cause i was narrating my high school life to someone whose house i was seeking shelter in whilst they appeared extremely entertained and then d disappeared and i didnt ask or wonder why and then i was telling these people about that one heckin creepy boy who used to stalk me from room to room in 12th grade and then my mother was there and we argued about something at which point a neon pink banner saying "are your demons manifesting as your parents in your dreams?" which i know is from an art post i saw on instagram before going to bed floated across my vision and then once again found myself in that neighbourhood where everything smelled like mangoes and those white flowers with yellow centres whose leaves ooze an itchy gunk i forget what they're called but they littered the streets of every single neighbourhood i've grown up in and then i was trying to escape this gated neighbourhood that currently housed Murderous Lieb who had already killed my grandparents and my brother but i couldn't because the black gates were locked and guarded by three white tigers who really seemed quite benevolent just extremely large and so i befriended them but i still could not escape because i couldn't break open the lock and then i was back on that balcony in what felt like CR Park hanging from the iron grills lining the outside of the balcony whilst murderous Lieb approached from within the house and his dog panted down below and it was just overall wild + wildly terrifying, and then i woke up and was like umm do i have gas

Little Moments
KiriBaku Week 2018
Day 2: April 18th
Prompt: Fake Dating AU / Spring Fling / Pirates
Warnings: Mild language
Summary: Who knew that all it took to get these two love birds alone was a clueless Kaminari and a parrot.
Story below the cut.
Halloween. Definitely not Bakugou's favorite holiday, though he didn't put much stock in holidays anyway. St. Patrick's Day? Lame. He didn’t need an excuse to punch pinch someone. Easter? Pastels pissed him off. Valentines Day? Just no. The list could go on.
But Halloween… more often than not kids these days dressed up as their favorite heroes. And while Katsuki Bakugou definitely admired certain heroes, All Might in particular, he had no desire to dress up as them. He was going to be his own hero one day, he didn't need to waste his time parading around as someone else.
“What?" Kirishima's eyes widened. "What do you mean you've never dressed up as a hero?"
Bakugou growled. He didn't like having to explain himself. "I meant what I said. I'm not going to put on the costume of some - "
"But - " Kirishima interrupted, remembering all the times he wore that old Crimson Riot costume as a kid. Even when the occasion didn't call for a costume. Little Kiri would beg his mom to let him wear the suit on play dates, while running errands to the mall, basically every instance he could come up with.
So to have someone, someone who wanted to be a hero no less, who grew up not wearing the costumes of his favorite heroes… Kirishima just didn't understand.
"Hey, hey!" Sero beamed. "That's actually a great idea."
"Huhhh?" Kaminari mumbled around the charging chords sitting between his teeth. "What idea?"
The four of them were huddled around the couches and chairs in the dorm's living room. Bowls of ramen littered the coffee table between them, including the half-empty package of chili flakes Bakugou had insisted dumping into his own bowl. Kaminari had practically downed a whole gallon of water, watching Bakugou scarf down the undoubtedly spicy concoction. One the other hand, Sero complained how Bakugou had ruined a perfectly bowl of ramen, but was overshadowed by Kirishima's praise of Bakugou's manliness. Kirishima then proceeded to dump the remainder of the chili flakes into his own bowl. He did not finish his food; Bakugou ate it for him.
"This is a costume contest, at UA, everyone is going to be dressed as heroes. If our team is going to win, then we have to do something different!" Sero stood from his seat, spreading his arms wide as if he had made some great announcement.
"Oh, I get it!" Kaminari jumped onto the couch, sparks dancing across his skin. "That will really make us stand out!"
Swift as ever, Bakugou grabbed Kaminari's arm and dragged him to the ground. "Don't fry my phone, idiot!"
Cowering as Bakugou stood over him, Kaminari pulled the (only slightly!) smoking phone cord from his mouth, grinning sheepishly. "Heh, my bad. But you have to admit it’s a great idea!"
Not one to be down for long, Kaminari leaped to his feet again, leaning close to Bakugou and Sero.
"Of course it is!" Bakugou smirked. "It was my idea."
Well, not exactly - Sero thought, but didn't really care enough to argue. "What should we go as then?"
Kirishima watched on as his three friends brainstormed costume ideas.
Is this really okay? Not going as heroes?
Pirates. That is what the other three had decided on. And over the next few weeks Kirishima had started to warm up to the idea. Just because it wasn't his first pick for a group costume didn't mean he couldn't enjoy it and play along. Pirates could be fun too!
He had even managed to drag Bakugou out to the mall for once so they could look for costume pieces. Bakugou refused to buy a pre-made costume, so they had to build them from scratch. In the end, Kirishima was pretty happy with the result. He had even found a stuffed parrot to perch on his shoulder. Not having the most fashion sense, even on a regular day, Kirishima's outfit was terribly mismatched with conflicting patterns and colors. He thought that made the affect more real!
They made a funny pair, standing together in their costumes. Bakugou looked almost like pirate royalty, if such a thing even existed. He wore a hat befitting of the captain of their crew, along with tall boots and a long jacket. His shirt brandished a big skull on the front, reminiscent of the flags flown by pirate ships. Though, Kirishima was pretty sure Bakugou already owned that shirt and just didn't want to wear a frilly shirt like Kaminari.
"Wow, you guys look great!" Mina had wandered over, brandishing her Wild, Wild Pussycats costume.
Kaminari and Sero gravitated towards her, showing off their costumes. Sero had developed an entire back-story for his character, claiming to be an old sailor in the navy who lost a hand and leg at war, which made him bitter, leading him to abandon his government and live a life at sea. Naturally, he brandished a peg-leg and a hook for a hand.
Everyone is really getting into this, Kirishima thought, maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea.
Remembering who was next to him, Kirishima abruptly turned back toward Bakugou, not wanting his friend to feel left out. The sudden motion jolted the parrot on his shoulder, and Kirishima reached out a hand to keep the stuffed animal from falling. Bakugou's eyes followed the movement.
"Hehe, " Letting out a nervous laugh, Kirishima raised a hand to run through his hair before remembering he was wearing a bandanna. "Could you imagine if we were pirates for real? Sailing the seas, pillaging and - "
"Get real, shitty hair. You'd be the worst pirate ever." Bakugou asserted.
"Huh?" Was his costume not great after all?
Bakugou huffed before explaining. Why he felt the need to explain, he couldn't understand, but he didn't dwell on it. All he knew was that he should say something before that idiot got the wrong idea. "Last week you couldn't even keep those sunglasses you found in the locker room."
Oh. Kirishima smiled at his friend. So this was just Bakugou being Bakugou. There was nothing wrong with his costume after all.
Bakugou stared at Kirishima's wide smile, curious as to how he was able to look so happy when just a moment ago he had seemed so disappointed.
"Actually," Kaminari slid between the pair, breaking their eye contact. "Captain Jack Sparrow was a good pirate. He refused to sell slaves for the British, so he was brandished as a pirate and his ship was set on fire - "
"Shut up, extra! No one asked you!"
"Hey! I am the Sailing Master of this ship! You should treat me with more respect!"
"What? And who do you think I am?"
The loud rancorous laughter that escaped Kirishima's lips dulled the growing sparks on Bakugou's palms, as he was reminded of Kirishima kind smile from just a minute ago. Suddenly, he wanted to get back to where they were before Kaminari interrupted them.
Gaze drifting from Kirishima's grin to his shoulder, Bakugou's brows furrowed. "Kirishima."
The laughter stopped.
"I'm fixing your costume. Come with me."
Bakugou stormed down the hallway, toward the boy's dorms. He knew Kirishima would follow. And he did.
"What just happened?" A confused Kaminari was left behind.
A hooked hand patted his shoulder. "You just don’t get it, do you?"
Mina nodded along behind them.
Admittedly, Kirishima was a bit confused as well, as he followed Bakugou up the stairs. Bakugou opened the door to his bedroom, expecting Kirishima to follow him inside. When he didn't hear the red-head's heavy footsteps, he turned to see him standing uncertainly in the doorway.
"You've never invited someone into your room."
"Huh? I've just never had a reason to invite you in here before." Growing impatient, he grabbed Kirishima's arm and pulled him into the room, guiding him to a seat on the end of the bed.
Kirishima felt his ears grow warm when he realized Bakugou had only specified inviting him into his room and no one else. No, Kirishima denied, I'm just reading too much into it.
While, Kirishima underwent his own internal debate, Bakugou focused on rifling through his drawers. He had originally wanted to return to their moment from before, but didn't know how to do that. Or how to ask Kirishima for it. So instead he focused on the task at hand.
He had originally cursed his mom for making him over pack, but now he was glad he had brought it. Bakugou grinned triumphantly as his hands lifted the plastic case from under a stack of old sweaters. Placing the case on the bed beside Kirishima, he opened the lid to reveal a sewing set.
"Your stupid parrot keeps slipping off your shoulder. It's annoying." Bakugou explained at Kirishima's questioning glance.
"Oh, thanks." Kirishima now understood. He began to slide the sleeves of this vest off this shoulders.
"No, keep it on. It'll only take a minute."
Kirishima simply nodded and readjusted his vest, perching the parrot on top just where he wanted it. The talented Bakugou is back again, Kirishima mused as he watched the fiery blond be unexpectedly gentle while threading the needle. The hands he was so used to watching burn and destroy, were now carefully piercing his vest and then the plush orange of the parrot's feet. Vest, parrot, vest then parrot - Kirishima's eyes followed the needle as he studied the fingers that moved deftly just under his chin, sometimes brushing against his cheek. It was at this moment that he felt his ears grow even hotter. They had to be noticeably red by now.
Looking around the room to distract himself, Kirishima found something he did not expect. "Hey, you sure have a lot of All Might stuff in here."
Posters, action-figures, even a pillow. It wasn't nearly as much All Might merchandise as Midoriya's room, but there was still a lot. More than Kirishima certainly expected.
"Huh?" Bakugou kept his focus on his hands, making sure not to press the needle too deep and puncture the warm skin beneath the vest. Maybe he should tell Kirishima to harden, just in case.
"I just… I thought you didn't like that hero stuff…" Kirishima trailed off, not sure how to continue.
Faltering, Bakugou recalled when they had first started making their Halloween plans. He had noticed Kirishima's hesitation that day, the insecurity hidden behind his eyes. Bakugou paused in his ministrations and raised his head. Not realizing until now just how close he had leaned into Kirishima, his hands splayed across his chest. Bakugou almost lost his train of thought.
"Just because I don't show my admiration for heroes in the same way that you do, doesn't mean I don’t admire them. Your way isn't any less valid than mine."
The blush spread to Kirishima's cheeks. How? Bakugou wasn’t socially graceful by any means, but somehow he always knew what insecurities Kirishima was feeling. Somehow he knew just what needed to be said.
That soft gaze Kirishima directed at his friend kneeling before him nearly undid Bakugou. Somehow, Kirishima always understood just what Bakugou was trying to say.
"Well, are you going to hurry and finish? We can't win if I have a lopsided parrot." Kirishima grinned at him again. One of those openly warm smiles that almost made the corners of Bakugou's lips twitch too.
There, Bakugou smirked, he had found the moment.

“Podalida” by Joakim Dahlqvist
“A drawing of a fictional city. I was tired of all the dystopian vision and wanted to create something that is optimistic yet still ambiguous. It is a scene full of activity and dynamism, multiple stories without a single protagonist. There are many easter eggs and secrets to be discovered every time one looks at it.”
“The Minute Before Tomorrow” by Nadar Matar, CallisonRTKL
“She murmured to me bluntly: you do not belong here. I answered bluntly: I do not belong here. I never managed to package her neatly when we were separated. Because I never had the courage to tell myself that I left, never to be back again. Now I am a shadow of myself, restlessly wandering Earth. “Do you often go back?” I am repeatedly asked. And I lift my gaze to hide my silence. I never left. She lives in me.
Our soul is a shelter. Cities live in us as much as we are in them. They inhibit our memories and tell our stories, they transmute, live, die and glow in our fantasies.
She will rise again, the optimist says. The cynic sees a city in the process of going extinct: Beirut will never be the same again.”
“Portrait of a City” by Jihoon Baek, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Art KABK)
“People of the past generation often imagined how the city would look like in modern days. Sleek towers, straight roads, tidy urban fabrics, coherent buildings, massive gardens…
However, our cities look a lot different from the imagination of the past. A city rather evolved with each different story and context, resulting itself to be a massive collage of incredibly diverse characteristics.
Tall and low, glasses and stones, old and new, beautiful and ugly, subtle and distinct, East and West, beloved and hated, construction and destruction, real and unreal…
This diversity, which might seem nasty and chaotic, is in fact, the greatest properties of modern cities that amuse, attract, enrich, and shift our lives. This is the true beauty of a city.“
“Land of Electric Beasts : Machine Landscapes of the Post Anthropocene” by Tinn Kiewkarnkha, INDA Chulalongkorn University
“Land of Electric Beasts : Machine Landscapes of the Post Anthropocene,” a drawing of a speculative scene of a post-human rural landscape of the not so distant future. It is a journey into a vast land of automation in an agricultural landscape located in a countryside or what can be called a machine landscape.
Based on the acceleration of existing trends and technologies, an indoor agricultural landscape with sets of transportation cranes. It is but a small window into an emerging reality, a new non-human wilderness dominated not by the natural world but a new set of machine ecologies beyond human scale and understanding.”
“Imagining a Vertical Forest” by Endrit Marku, Polis University
“A tower carved with niches of trees. A monumental piece of architecture and an apparent intelligent solution, pleasing everyone, the egos of architects and developers, their wealth too, but also their desire for a public display of social responsibility. The building shadows the old land-consuming city that paved the path for the relentless earth’s anthropization. This tower aspires to become one with nature, claiming a place among the planet’s remaining forests, and it feels special, fresh.
Before it, there were just the mountain forests, the Babylonian gardens, Chernobyl’s abandoned khrushchyovka’s or even the potted flowers on grandma’s terrace. It is made of concrete, earth’s alienated son. Labyrinths of pipes pumping water upstream, for the trees to survive, are an improved version of nature’s streams. The missing fertilizers can be bought in any hypermarket. The imagined architecture is a simulacrum of already built simulacra precariously floating without foundations in illusory perpetuity.“
“View of Apartment #5, a Labyrinth and Repository of Spatial Memories” by Clemence Laurencio, University College London (UCL), Bartlett School of Architecture
“Five months have passed since the start of the lockdown here in London. I remain isolated on the third floor.
After many months of being locked up in my apartment, something peculiar began happening…
One day, as I made my way to the washroom, I suddenly found myself transported to another place. It was dark, but I could feel the cold stone beneath my feet. My steps echoed through this cavernous space. I reached for the wall, where I felt the familiar shape of the light switch… I was back in my apartment. I thought I was meandering through the sunken stepwells in Ahmedabad. Another time, I was running my hands on the smooth sun-kissed tiled roof of Doshi’s Sangath, when in fact, I sat in my living room, clasping my warm coffee mug… flashbacks of past times manifest themselves …
My memories had allowed me to escape my apartment.”
“Together Alone” by Yee Bless, Handel Architects
“Today, social distancing has manifested a new definition of ‘together’. The physical proximity of people and buildings have been reduced to the ‘virtual’. ‘Together’ we isolate, ‘together’ we work, and ‘together’ we zoom into the lens of our homes and struggles amidst a pandemic, the intrinsic fight for human rights, and survival of the everyday.
This drawing cuts a section through hexagonal pods that encapsulate our inhabited spaces. The hexagonal shape represents our self-proclaimed strength and efficiency around our designs, the same efficiency that circulated the virus with rapid speed. The hexagonal framework is deforming under the pressure of an evolving reconciliation for how we cope with the virus in our daily lives. Our pods are juxtaposed against one another revealing that we are closer ‘together’ than we think, and that we must act ‘together’ for the future.“
“City of Nothing // Island of Everything : Park Avenue Elevaiton” by William Bayram, Declan Wagstaff and Christopher McCallum, University of Edinburgh
“As a unique urban context, Manhattan settles itself within the dichotomy of a city and island. Its individuality, yet connectivity, thrives for greater density as the catalyst of the containment of the strange. This architectural manifestation of estrangement shares a duality between pragmatic and fantastical, thus the city cannot help lend itself to the thinking of both creative endeavours. The containing of this architecture within the restriction of an island splits between the seen/unseen, vertical/horizontal, overworld/underworld comparisons.
Here, the island finds itself a blended world of consumption, sustainability, cultural and political iconicity. Yet for all the island’s architectural accumulation, what it has to show for itself is non-material, therefore through the consumption and containment of everything it presents and trades nothing. This thesis seeks to explore this territory of estrangement through two narrative threads of thinking, the Pragmatic and the Fantastical which find themselves at times separate or intertwined.”
“The Censored Materials Archive” by Chi Kit Matthew Choy, The Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture
“The censored materials archive situates in a world full of dogmatic opinions and polarising beliefs. It provides a space for those who are willing to give censored works a second chance by engaging and listening to one’s contentious ideas, and in return appreciating the disparity among a pluralist society.
Unlike conventional museums, galleries are linear with no visual connections between them. There is no alternate path, only confrontation. Spatially ambiguous galleries reflect the controversial and disputing nature of the materials. Galleries are only allowed to be entered individually, allowing visitors to examine these works without the fear of being captiously judged. The debating hall is the crucible where bonds are forged and views diverge through presenting censored materials. While heated arguments and candid reflections are conducted, autonomous machines below these galleries work endlessly in archiving and curating censored materials with their non-partisan eyes.“
“(Re) programmed ruin” by Paola Botía, Universidad de los Andes
“The project starts from the understanding of our cities as a palimpsest, the coexistence of different temporalities that manifests the cities’ continuous growth and transformation. These unending changes leave urban voids, decaying sites apparently forgotten; loaded with what has occurred, but somehow unaware and oblivious to the dynamics of the contemporary city. These “Vague Terrains” as De Sóla Morales defines, are places where nature breaks borders in different scales conquering the void and exalting the inevitable ruin of architecture in time.
This abandoned sites, which may seem completely inaccessible, represent the void as a place with the potential to unveil new ways to address urban renovation. The project aims to reprogram this post-industrial landscape as a hotspot for culture and public life, setting in motion the revitalization of the neighborhood as a new cultural cluster while visualizing how the altering characteristics of the ruin enhance matter and architecture.“
INSCAPE: Neo-Unité by Hao Wang and Xin Feng, Harvard Graduate School of Design
“At the time in which we are subjected to the invitation of isolation, socialization is at risk. People’s true identity has been pulled back behind the media screen and developed a digitized relationship, raising the questions, is the digital-self your true self? Is cyber relationship real? Thus, domestic living and socializing prototype should be redefined. In response, a new home scape – INSCAPE – is designed to reflect upon the challenge between true identity and social relationships.
In our site-less Neo-Unité Community, worldwide habitants get a matched housing unit based on their personality. While providing intimate space to be alone, a screen – act as a scape – serves to communicate and exchange emotions anonymously. This “Instagramal Screen” is an digitized interface between co-habitants where they act and react on both sides and develop unexpected relationships. Through inventing INSCAPE, love and care could be unleashed through both virtual and reality.”
“H.D.D” by Brent Haynes, Manchester School of Architecture
“Harpurhey’s Density with Distance (H.D.D) is a testing ground for a new urban typology that turns social distancing protocols into an asset for Highstreet revitalization.
There has been a recent increase of awareness of spatial boundaries within the public realm. Line ups outside shops have become a new, unpleasant, part of the retail experience; and when the lines recede, paint and stickers remain as undesirable decoration to remind us of our new reality. What if we could turn these waiting irritations into memorable experiences and furthermore, integrate spatial distancing measures into an urban aesthetic?
Welcome to H.D.D.
The most prominent feature of the proposal are the three-story, tri-axial sliders, that together line up and consume the street. The sliders pickup and place sitting booths; a new urban system to provide a high-tech, pro-consumeristic solution to our socially problematic reality.”
“Twisted Landscapes” by Solangely Rivera-Hernandez, CAS Architecture
“Imagine being able to twist and turn your environment. Have the power to control the landscape following a Rubik’s cube logic for example. Only that in this case, the colors are spaces and with every turn new destinations show up. What would happen if more than one user controls it? That would be out of this world!
Traditional architecture as we know is meant to be built with a lengthy life span. Constructions from centuries ago still stand today giving us a glimpse of the past and with that permanency comes our urban fabric development. That said, with technology’s growth, architecture has expanded its reach. Now there are houses and buildings with parts that move, rotate, and even transform. Can we think of something macro? How about a whole city of endless possibilities where each turn composes a new landscape?”
Dumpster Panda by Tanya Castillo Pelayo
“Back alleys and garbage pick up places are under designed and neglected spaces, yet they are often the focal point for many apartment dwellers’ everyday view of their communities. No matter where you live, sometimes the focus is on something you do not want to see. Dumpster Panda irreverently and playfully highlights unwanted hidden corners of suburbia.”
A window over an algae-powered Colliers Wood by Matt Faraci, University College London
“This vision references the industrial arts-and-crafts heritage of Merton, London whilst contemplating future opportunities for sustainable energy. It echoes technological advancements made with several microorganisms, like fast-growing microalgae suitable for most types of water which can produce energy, light and heat by absorbing CO2. It is set in Colliers Wood, a suburban London neighbourhood recently densified with new developments in the middle of the extensive sprawl of period houses.
By scaling up this symbiotic process, it redefines natural organisms as an active piece of city infrastructure and satisfies our thirst for renewable energy whilst mitigating threats to our ecosystem. This visual critique shows an inside/out approach where the colours utilised merge interior and exterior spaces and where urban opportunities rely on individual responsibilities, imagining a world where energy is produced on natural bodies of water (here the River Wandle, southwest London) as well as personal tanks in our homes.”
Adenventure of the Fantastic Arcman: Piranesi by Stefan Maier and Bernadette Hofer, University of Innsbruck
“He rose into space, a pillar into the sky, vaults for eternity, black shadows passing by. This is the story of Dilli City’s Arcman… who he is and how he came to be. “When is a man a city? When it’s Batman or when it’s Gotham. I’d take either answer.” – The Riddler Is there a correlation between actor and the space he acts in? Is identity shaped by space or is space shaped by identity? Or even both? It is the 1986 Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns that highlights the inseparable connection between Batman and his city. It resembles a circular connection, in that one is always creating and perpetuating the other. What Comic book heroes show us, is how the character and it’s built environment correspond to each other. So, what defines the architecture of our comic heroes? Which role does it take? Superhero or supervillain?”
Cannibalism City by Yafei Li, University of California, Berkeley
“The city is shattered by social distancing, whose intestine can be peeped between the six-foot gap. The broken grids, like islands, staring at each other with no interaction or communication. Social distancing pulls the city apart and reveals the dirty intestine, full of racial discrimination and class conflict, hidden under a seemingly friendly face. A painted skin has been torn apart and the essence of cannibalism in this city is exposed.
Cannibalism City, it reminds me of a paragraph in A Madman’s Dairy by Lu Xun, “In ancient times, people often ate human beings. I tried to look this up, but my history has no chronology, and scrawled all over each page are the words: ‘Virtue and Morality.’ Since I could not sleep anyway, I read intently half the night, until I began to see words between the lines, the whole book being filled with the two words, ‘Eat People.’”
“Clay Workshop” by Alexandros Michail Varvantakis
“Queenstown Microsociety
This design proposal revisits surveillance with a mindset that no one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with their privacy and creates a new form of society in which occupants can feel secure.
Queenstown aims to re-evaluate covert responses by proposing an architecture where people can live, work and hide together under a sustainable economic network embodying a primary school, several workshops and factories trying to be fully autonomous. The construction sequence of the proposal is separated into 3 phases and it’s planned to be completed in a century from it’s start date.
Queenstown philosophizes over several pedagogic systems and aims to illustrate ideas that combined result in an Utopian system of education which forms the foundation of an idealistic society. This speculative proposal is a device,a thought experiment which gives an alternative way of living to London citizens beyond the limitations and the insecurity of the contemporary society.”
Cloud City by Luka Rados, Technical University of Vienna
“Cloud City is a utopic solution for the sprawling cities of tomorrow. The transportation is seen as an important aspect of this vision, where new sub-centers are being developed around the big transit intersections. This would be a new and more organic interpretation of the garden city, where newly formed centralities would function as small almost self-sufficient cites.
A Modular system is developed that can attach and detach itself, and therefore grow and shrink depending on the community needs. This flexible system should be seen as a cloud covering and supplementing problematic areas of the city, where extra infrastructure is needed. This section is a concrete intervention for one area in the 22nd district of Vienna, which is often seen as a District on the wrong side of the Danube. It was through centuries neglected since it was land that was often flooded, and it is desperate for new revitalization.”
CUENCAMO by Danilo Cristancho, Architect
“CUENCAMO a new opportunity.
A premise of architecture is to implant itself in harmony with the context. Welcoming and being welcomed by nature becomes an architectural priority in times of climate change. Where is the balance between architecture and nature? Perhaps we should explore deep in the forests, build and be a community with nature, understand it and project our refuges according to what nature dictates.
This is a refuge built by an explorer who investigates the possibilities of making architecture in absolute harmony with nature; he is deep in the forest, in the mountains … of the earth? No. This is a new planet, Cuencamo, deep in another galaxy. A new possible world. A second chance.”
Decoding WasteCity by Andrea Zamora and Juanita Echeverry, Universidad de Los Andes
“The COVID-19 emergency, together with our consumer behavior, triggered pollution and waste production rates. This catastrophe led to the city abandonment, where buildings became obsolete.
Returning to the ruined city implied rethinking the management of resources. Waste colonization became the strategy to survive reality. In this way, the new territory is shaped by the overlapping of multiple time scenarios where the interrelated layers reconcile conflictive situations.
Here, life is possible due to the existence of new mobility systems developed within the living planes. Bridges allow horizontal passages, while the redesign of Bogotá´s public transport tracks along vertical structures that pivot through the coatings of the new reality.
What used to be is essential for what is to come. Each layer is indispensable for life to endure in the new territory. By decoding the decay accumulated over decades and reconstructing from what is no longer usable, life can develop in wastecity.”
Everything/Nothing Exploded Axo by Will Bayram, University of Edinburgh
“The thesis explores the vertical expansion of Manhattan within a terrain of ravines that exposes the city’s schist underside that underpins the skyscrapers above. This underground condition highlights Manhattan’s desire to grow upwards rather than outwards.
By inhabiting this new landscape the architecture explores the dichotomy Manhattan presents as thriving off the consumption as an urban cluster (Everything) and its contradiction, the thriving of relief (Nothing). The group schematic proposes three towers of Nothing that interlink through Agora fragments within a network of Everything, dedicated to the strange production of returning Nothing to the city and a weaving Agora that seeks to satisfy the city’s need for Everything.
My tower of Nothing proposes a facility that produces pure oxygen for both research and the city and an Agora fragment that blends the economic flux of commodities with an additional wing dedicated to the political functions of trading and regulating.”
“Fusion” by Gonzalo Vaillo, MORPHtopia
“The hyper-densification of certain metropolises (especially in Asian cities with uncontrolled urbanisation models) is pushing (if it has not yet exceeded) the sustainable limits of the living conditions of such built environments. This is occurring, to a certain degree, because of the abandonment of large agricultural areas. (Zhang, Li, Song, Zhai 2016) In this context, this project proposes a re-occupation of these obsolete structures of the countryside.
Unlike traditional “hard” urban planning devices, a fused affiliation of natural, technological, and human agencies establishes a model of low-human-controlled growth infrastructures emerging from the patterns of old agricultural subdivision. A rabbit hole that demands constant extrication of oneself from my/your/his/her/our/their condition at the top of the pyramid. An ecognostical model of coexistence. (Morton 2016)”
“GENETICS” by Giangtien Nguyen, INVI LLC
“At some point in their life, the elderly will stop their journey. The new generation will start their own exploration while carrying the genes of their ancestry. Circle of life is a reality of every living thing. As we journey to the height of our youth, selfishly we look to our personal benefits. During pandemics we excuse ourselves to physically connect for pleasure but forget to look at the consequences. The long climb to success tends to make us forget to look back on the elder generations. If we remember to see them, then we can then see our future.”
“GRID IN THE SKY” by Trevin D’Souza, Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai, India
“As I look out into the new world, I see the chaos humanity has caused that lay suspended over the earth. Humans have tried to reach closer to the sky taking their civilizations one step further in their greedy quest to expand upwards.
The word ‘ home’ and ‘land’ has been redefined. Humans now live in a home that is somewhat stationary as well as moving by virtue of a mechanized grid that helps transport each ‘home’ or ‘land’ throughout the grid. Humans feel they are free up in the sky, away from the tortures of Earth and by doing so have given back to the Earth its former glory with open, untouched greenery, except the metal columns that hold the whole grid of civilization. Humans are thus isolated in their own land yet not alone, stationary yet moving, in the air but still connected to the ground.”

On Easter morning, Leo and I celebrated the confirmation that we had become a family of five. Tuesday afternoon, we mourned as we discovered I had miscarried early in my fifth week. The extreme highs followed by the extreme lows of this week were physically exhausting, emotionally confusing, and spiritually heavy.
It’s impossible to articulate the reactions you have to a miscarriage, because there are so many, and like a large pendulum, we have swung back and forth on the scale multiple times in a day, sometimes in the same hour. At any moment we could be heavily grieving, or doggedly plugging away in faith. In times like these, our greatest comfort has not been in how we feel, how people make us feel, or feelings at all. It’s been through the promised activity of God, who breaks into our world of emotions with the truth of his Word.
We wanted this trial to be made known to you. Not just for prayers, though we covet them, but because we believe, we know, biblically and scientifically, life begins at conception. Had we miscarried at 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 32 weeks, or delivered a stillborn infant, this was always a baby, a human being, OUR CHILD. This precious life was immediately imprinted with the same divine nature and image of God, like every human being created. It was not a lump of random tissue, or a coagulation of random cells. It was a beautifully, intentionally crafted work of art by a detail-oriented creator and father. And as wonderful as that is to comprehend, it compounds our grief. We have three children, two of whom God has allowed us to raise. We have found comfort, however, that if we cannot hold this little one, there is no safer or sweeter place for them to be than in the arms of Jesus. We mourn for our own loss, not for theirs. For this little one, the first sound they heard was the voice of Jesus, and the first sight they beheld was His glorious face. We rejoice with them, all the while feeling that gaping hole in our home, in our arms, and in our hearts.
However, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. There are significant evidences of the intentional kindness of God, who lovingly has been preparing us for this. I want to share these with you, because, as heavy as this all has been, our eyes have been lifted to see the beauty already rising from the ashes:
-We have been closely walking with friends who have miscarried in the recent months. A month ago I asked a select number of ladies for testimonials on their experiences, so that I could learn how to better serve those close to me in this specific trial, and to care for them in a more understanding way. Reading through these responses on Wednesday was such a comfort to MY OWN soul, in my own grieving. And I would not have anticipated that a month ago. But God did - he planned it for us.
-We are surrounded by 12 pastoral-level caregivers in our PC class. While many people who experience this rely on family, we have been overwhelmed at times with the lavish love and support from our dear friends. Immediately, they deployed themselves into considerate action. They did not descend on us, invade our space, our bombard us. They skillfully showed us their love and care, while at the same time allowing us room to process this privately. As hard as this has been, we feel like the outpouring of love has made this a grief-shared experience, and thus lightened the heavy load.
-The type of care we have received has been so meaningfully and thoughtfully demonstrated. We feel understood, accommodated, and for the most part no one has tried to “fix” it or us. My family ordered us food Tuesday night and Wednesday all the way from PA. One of my sisters was my lifeline for a constant stream of emotional rants and questions, while empathy and patience permeated all her responses. Wednesday and Thursday, we had multiple drop-offs at the door, people just leaving things for us, without needing to be seen or thanked. I received texts with the heading “read this when you can/feel like it/are able.” We got anonymous packages in the mail. We had childcare for two whole days. And there has been a communicated “there is no time limit” for our needs. We can reach out for more help next week and know people are ready to serve us if we need it.
-This week is national infertility awareness week. Waiting for God to move and grant us the gift of life is a very real and ongoing experience. This stuff needs to be on the table, in our wheelhouse of conversation and comprehension. There needs to be a category for this. It can be so earth shattering and faith-stumbling if you are not ready for it (as we learned last time around with waiting for Lincoln, and the six months before conceiving this child). God has put this on my heart, to grow my knowledge and preparation for this specific kind of long-term suffering. I have been studying the Psalms, the emotional cries from the Bible. It’s not a mistake that we will celebrate the anniversary of this life on the same week we rejoice in Christ overcoming death. The resurrection hope is just as true today as it was on Sunday when we were on top of the world. The books I have been reading target my spiritual understanding and appreciation of suffering, and I can honestly say that if this had happened last year, I don’t think my heart would have responded as quickly in faith. I would have felt depleted and hopeless, at least initially. But because my head knowledge of this is expanding, I have verses, truths, promises, and assurances that I didn’t have before, and they have become a bedrock for me in the dark moments of my days. This especially important because, in trials like these, the last thing that serves is someone else preaching truth at you. This is a very unique trial and form of suffering. Unlike other situations (like trials that have resulted from the consequences of sin), it just doesn’t serve when someone outside the situation tries to speak into it, even if it is well-intentioned. The truth needed to be inside me, drawn from my own soul, and my own well needs to be continually filled or my bones will dry out. Building my own bank of truth, preaching it TO MYSELF, that’s where the Holy Spirit has done his greatest work of healing. Leo has found this promise to be especially comforting in this season: “God is faithful, and he will not let you [or your spouse] be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor. 10:13b).
-Finally, one of my greatest and ongoing sources of comfort has been Leo. He has dropped everything on his to-do list and made me, us, our family the priority. He has watched the kids, prepared our food, cleaning my house, ironed clothes, coordinated care, and waited on my every need. He has cried with me and held me. He has listened to me and prayed with me. He has asked me so many thoughtful and helpful questions, while remaining sensitive and understanding, slow to speak and abounding in love. And one of the best aspects of his presence is his living, breathing testimony that God can redeem that which the locusts have eaten. Leo was conceived one month after a miscarriage. If that miscarriage hadn’t happened, Leo would not be alive. As awful and terrible that experience was for his mother, I am living with and being daily loved by PROOF that God can and will bring life from death. This God is in the business of subduing the effects of sin and decay. And joy can follow sorrow, no matter how deep the valley of death.
My hope is not in more children. I have three now, and I know my joy in them is not enough to give me eternal hope. My hope is that my life has been hid in Christ. My hope is not what this suffering produces FOR me, but IN me, and those are eternally significant things. I don’t hope in what God will provide for me physically, but in what this experience is doing for me spiritually. He is making me more and more like him, and that is where the beauty in the ashes comes from. Not from what I gain from this, but that I can lose everything and still have Christ. That he will never be taken from me. That he is enough for me. Because He is. He is ever proving himself to be.
He who is mighty has done a great thing Taken on flesh, conquered death’s sting Shattered the darkness and [lifted our gaze] Holy is His Name.

Kenzan Arena Brings Large-Scale Multiplayer VR to the Out-of-Home Entertainment Sector
Today at the SVVR Conference & Expo, San Jose, Kenzan Studios has unveiled a brand new virtual reality (VR) ‘playground’ initiative. Set to be known as Kenzan Arena, the project is a collaboration with Noitom which aims to set a new benchmark in both accuracy and latency in three-dimensional space.
Designed for the out-of-home environment, Kenzan Arena is set to offer a variety of videogame experiences that target children, families and adults. The product will be sold into distribution on a franchise basis to shopping malls and leisure centres around the globe, with the first Kenzan Arena playground scheduled to open in late summer 2017 in Zurich Switzerland.
Using Noitom’s motion-tracking technology, Kenzan Arena will adapt large play spaces to the use of full-tracking VR, similar to the experiences currently available with The Void and Zero Latency. Players can touch and manipulate physical objects in the real-world with different implications in the VR experience. The Kenzan Arena will also integrate wind and flight simulators into the different videogames enhance the sense of immersion.
“Kenzan Arena is a place where technology allows everyone to discover extraordinary worlds, in the best possible way. Comfort and safety are of utmost importance. But for me, emotions, beauty and artistry remain non-negotiable values,” says Pascal Montjovent, Director of Creative Research & Development at Kenzan Studios.
Kenzan Studios plan to release new videogames every 12 months, with multiplayer competitions between multiple Kenzan Arena installations bringing eSports to an international scale. At present, four titles have been unveiled for the Kenzan Arena installations:
The Lost Pit VR is a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) targeted at adults. In a futuristic colosseum on a planet far away, up to 12 players fight for survival on floating platforms. Two of these players will fly futuristic motorbikes over and under the platforms, using motion-tracked real-world input solutions.
EnigmAttic VR is a videogame created for groups of friends or families. In this mysterious escape room players have to work together to solve puzzles with the aim of transforming from a ghost back to a human being. The room is both virtual and physical, with objects in the real-world replicated in the VR environment.
Holiday Break VR is a single-player videogame created for children and families around every holiday period, be it Halloween, Easter, Christmas or even Valentine’s Day. Points are accumulated and rewards/discounts distributed by the hosting venue – tailored to their holiday offering.
Starpirates VR is a single-player videogame created for children and families in which players find themselves on a futuristic Jule Verne inspired pirate ship, takes with shooting and smashes as many bottles as possible in the allotted time. As with Holiday Break VR points are accumulated that can be used for rewards and discounts by the hosting venue.
For all of the above titles, each Player is equipped with a backpack PC, a head-mounted display (HMD) and a set of controllers or special weapons. These are wireless, free roaming experiences. Depending on the videogame, either Noitom’s motion tracking technology or the HTC Vive platform will be used.
The entry level version of Kenzan Arena is a standard 200 square meter area (2150 sq ft) where up to 12 players can simultaneously participate. Therefore, the recommended space of a Kenzan Arena facility is 400 square meters (4300 sq ft). In addition to the 200 square meter playing area we recommend 100sqm waiting area and 100sqm for reception, coffee area, storage and operations. The minimum ceiling height is 3.5 Meters. On request, Kenzan Arena can be scaled to fit the structural circumstances of the operator’s facility.
Prior to today’s unveiling of the Kenzan Arena franchise, VRFocus met with Kenzan Studios to discuss the project and get hands-on with the videogames set to be offered as part of the package. There’s much more information to come soon, but those in attendance at SVVR Conference & Expo this week can get hands-on with the Kenzan Arena experience themselves.
