i know primarchs grew up very fast and are as mature as an adult at like age 10 but can you imagine if the primarchs--especially those who grew up in a society, went through a phase of forcing themselves to fit in even if they obviously don't because they don't wanna feel left out

like imagine this

little vulkan always slouching and trying to make himself look smaller around his friends. he's been taller than them since forever but he still does it no matter how much his foster father insists that they don't care.

on the same vein little magnus purposely pretending he doesn't know things or dumbs himself down because his peers think he's a no good smart ass. or him getting frustrated, sometimes on the brink of tears because he doesn't get why they can't grasp a specific topic he finds so easy. he's tried to explain, to tutor them but on some days it feels like its going in one ear and out the other and it makes him mad to the brink of tears. the pride in his intellect had yet to settle so at those moment he's just a child that wants to learn with his peers.

now little guilliman had the fortune of having a set of parents but imagine little guilliman getting outcasted by children his age. he already looks so much older with the way he grew so fast. he's got the same slouching problem as vulkan but unlike vulkan he has no friends. he's tried to make friends with the children of other senators only to get shunned because their parents belong to the opposite faction as konor.

JUST WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH IDK IF THE GREW UP QUICK THEY WERE BABIEEEEEEEEEES

I'm normally a very slow reader of published novels, but I devoured The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard and now I can NOT stop thinking about it.

Everyone who has read my Fire Lord Zuko content knows how much I love 1) people of power working tirelessly to make the world a better place for all; and b) kings, slowly being crushed under the weight of their crown and duty, finding love and care in their loyal servants and staff

Except this story is more. The Emperor is worshiped and treated as a god, bound by extreme taboos and protocols that he can't break. It's about his staff (his found family) looking BEYOND the exterior of godhood and finding the human being underneath - who is dying under the weight of being the Emperor - and deciding to reach out, even if by acknowledging his humanity they are technically breaking many laws.

God this book is about so many things, including:

Found family can be the Last Emperor and his senior members of staff

The Emperor learning how to be human again with the help of his friends

There's no romance in this book. The deep friendships are the beating heart of this story, and they very much Love each other.

Breaking down a previously corrupt imperial empire through hard work and radial reforms, leading to sweeping changes including UNIVERSAL INCOME

Embracing cultural heritage, even in the heart of the imperial palace. Our main character is both one of the highest ranking members of government and from an islander culture, and he dedicates himself to both

The struggle for your family (who have a case of tall poppy syndrome, and live far far away from the capital and palace) to see you as a respected adult and understand all of your (many, MANY) achievements, even when you're very literally brought the Emperor home with you.

This book has some BEAUTIFUL confrontations, take-downs, and revelations based on the past two points (and more). If you underestimate or insult our main character, You Will Regret It. Watching him lose his temper is a glorious thing to behold.

Anyway I'm pretty sure this just became my all-time favourite book, because it's beautifully written and touches on all of my favourite tropes.

It's difficult thirsting after Emperor Caracalla from Gladiator II because my brain starts creating a smutty scenario but then it instantly recoils away from the thought because of his implied syphilis 😭

thinking about being in a long-term relationship with ushijima who only ever says "i love you too", because he never says it first.

you're alright with it, you think, because he expresses his love in other ways. he texts you every day, when it takes him 5-13* business days to get back to everyone else. he remembers your orders from all the restaurants and cafés you like, even your complicated and extremely specific coffee order from that one speciality coffee shop downtown. he's the first person to tell you you can do it when you have a new dream that feels far out of your reach, that the best thing to do is to try. he sends you pictures of his day and sometimes pictures of himself even if he doesn't understand the point of a selfie when you obviously know what he looks like; you've known him for about half your life at this point, haven't you?

you know how he is, and you love him, so it's okay. it's okay, until it's not because you're bawling like a baby when he says "i love you" and you're the one who has to fight back tears to choke out "i love you too".
