Ambush at Dark Canyon (2012)
My rating: 5/10
I suppose "Ambush at Well-Lit Outcrop" didn't have the same ring to it.
Apparently that Kix Brooks guy is a country singer and owns the production company that made this movie, making this a vanity project - which explains why he's the lead, even though he's by far the worst actor there. He also seems to have provided most of the soundtrack, which in turn explains why vast swathes of this movie are basically music videos for a bunch of mediocre dad country songs.
All that being said, it's not unwatchable - everybody else can act well enough, especially Ernie Hudson (who acts circles about Brooks at any opportunity), it's competently directed, and while the plot is mostly a loosely connected amalgamation of clichés, it serves its purpose. I have definitely seen worse westerns.

Hallmark Channel Announces First 2023 Christmas Movie, Bethany Joy Lenz and Kristoffer Polaha to Star
Tumblr media
Hallmark Channel is planning ahead. Next month, the network will begin production on their first holiday movie of 2023.
“A Biltmore Christmas,” led by Bethany Joy Lenz and Kristoffer Polaha, will film entirely on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, a national historic landmark known for its classic holiday traditions. Dustin Rikert serves as executive producer with Andrew Gernhard producing. John Putch directs the script, written by Marcy Holland.
“Each year we look for ways to create exciting, new holiday viewing experiences for our audience,” says Samantha DiPippo, senior vice president of development and programming at Hallmark Media. “We know fans will love being transported back in time and the iconic, beautiful Biltmore Estate is the perfect setting to help fans get into the holiday spirit.”
The official description for “A Biltmore Christmas” is below:
Lucy Collins (Lenz) is a screenwriter who lands the job of a lifetime when she’s hired to write the script for a remake of the beloved holiday movie “His Merry Bride!” First filmed in 1947 at beautiful Biltmore House, it has long been considered a Christmas classic. As Christmas approaches, Lucy travels to Biltmore Estate for research. She joins a guided tour of the grounds where she gets insights into the history of the location and the filming of “His Merry Bride!,” and once inside the house, she’s drawn to a beautiful hourglass. When Lucy accidentally knocks it over, she finds herself transported back in time to 1946 – the Golden Age of Hollywood – as cast and crew prepare to film “His Merry Bride!” at Biltmore. Lucy does her best to navigate an unfamiliar place as a woman out of time, charming some and raising suspicions of others. It’s not long before Lucy catches the eye of the film’s dashing lead Jack Huston (Polaha) and although she initially rebuffs his advances, their connection soon becomes undeniable. Lucy’s sudden appearance sets off a chain of events that put the production in jeopardy. Before she can return to the present, she must make things right or threaten to alter the future forever. Lucy has one chance to go home but must say goodbye to the man who might be her soulmate unless some Christmas magic can keep the curtain from closing on their love story.

Ghost Rock (2003)
My rating: 5/10
Kung fu fighting gunslinger fights black hats with the help of his ghost girlfriend and several prostitutes. It's about as silly as it sounds, but I did appreciate the surprisingly sympathetic and nuanced portrayal of sex workers as, y'know, people.

One Royal Holiday – Dustin Rikert, 2020
Once Thanksgiving passed, it was time to begin watching all of the Christmas movies. This one was recorded on November first, showing that Hallmark has no shame and indeed starting broadcasting these films right after Halloween. And yes, this is a Hallmark film. Usually I would not stoop so low, but in my defense, Aaron Tveit is in this, and I love him. For those of you who are sadly unaware of who this man is, he played Enjolras in the 2012 Les Mis, and also originated the role of Christian in Moulin Rouge! on Broadway. I was lucky enough to see him in that production, and his swoopy hair is just as glorious in person. Anyway, that is the only reason I was willing to watch this otherwise terrible Hallmark movie.
Okay, as Christmas movies go, this is pretty standard schlock. It’s paint-by-numbers with the main characters meeting, then having to spend time together, and then falling in love. And all during Christmas! This one even features a ball with fancy gowns. It’s a proper Cinderella moment. Like most Christmas movies, the wardrobe is to die for. I love a good sweater-skirt combo, and I’m a gal who has winter coloring. So I do enjoy watching wintry movies to get that cute outfit inspiration. I did hope there would be more singing in this movie, seeing as how the two leads are Broadway stars. And the movie did open with the two of them doing a cover of “Let It Snow”, which was something. But other than a brief moment of carol-singing, there was nothing. I was very disappointed.
