Hanukkah Sameach!

Happy 1st night of Hanukkah to all that celebrate! Here’s the story of how Wolfstar got her first ear nick.

The incident happened when she was apprenticed in Duskclan, after doing poorly during a mock fight, Clearpaw (the blue/grey tabby tom in the first 2 pics) taunts Wolfpaw. After several incidents like this the two make an agreement to sneak out of camp and spar to see who was better.

Clearpaw had the advantage and would’ve won but he was smug and underestimated her, giving her the in to win. They got scraped up on bloody by the time she managed to pin him and win.

However Wolfpaw should’ve known that wherever Clearpaw is, Sparkpaw is sure to follow. The large red molly, angry her friend lost, ran out of her hiding place and grabbed Wolfpaw by the ear, ripping it in the process.

She probably would’ve done worse if Jaggedstar and Stoatfang hadn’t happened upon them. Enraged Jaggedstar grabbed Sparkpaw and threw her off her daughter.

Both Sparkpaw and Clearpaw were uninjured aside from scrapes and bruises, but Wolfpaw’s ear was bleeding heavily. Stoatfang and Greyclaw punished their respective apprentices heavily with unwanted chores and long lectures about the warrior code.

Jaggedstar lecture Wolfpaw for fighting and sneaking out, but was secretly pleased her daughter had managed to win and stand up for herself.

My two warriors ocs that are based off my real two cats Patches and Mary! Patches passed a couple years back so it was fun finding old pictures of her to reference.

Also sneaking their real names into their warrior names; Rosemary was Mary’s name at adoption so a nice reference.

Here is the prologue! I am so very excited to get to posting and sharing this story. Though to note, the prologue will be very much not like the rest of the comic. I decided to do a fully illustrated set of traditional pages to contrast with the half illustrated style the main comic will be drawn in.

The main character here is Duskwater/Duskstar. I'm sure he won't be important later :)

Moon 0 - Patrols

Wingpelt and his visitor

Airpelt and Bugpaws training

Graystrar, Wildfade and Bluebellstripe return from a hunting patrol with a small amount of pray and a sense of security.

1 - Wingpelt

As Wingpelt pads through DuskClan territory, they feel a presence join them. The scent of a familiar pelt reaches Wingpelts nose, he knows this cat! As he turns to greet them a purr rumbles in his chest and with their help he gathers elder leaves and blackberries.

2 - Airpelt and Bugpaw

While the patrol is intended for training the two cats find themselves a nice spot to sunbathe and Airpelt invites Bugpaw to sit with her. Bugpaw is stiff around his new mentor but his confidence spurs him on. This is Airpelts intention, for BugPaw to be able to be comfortable with her and learn to respect her. Proper connections are just as important as hunting and fighting, and if he cannot get along with her then he will have difficulty learning to live along side the rest of Duskclan.

3 - Graystar, Wildfade and Bluebell stripe

The three cats task themselves on hunting, being the last patrol to head out it is later in the day and the sky has turned gray. Soon after their departure snow starts to fall and they worry about bringing back fresh kill. Despite the snow they manage to bring back a small amount of prey, and as Graystar leads them home theirs a sense of security and competence driving them onwards.

How do Sparkclaw and Clearstorm feel about Wolfstar now? Would they still try to tease her if they were to meet her again?

I love these two, they don’t show up much in the story (yet) but they’re my fav lil background characters. They’re the classic twin coded bottom-tier bully characters you’d find in any kids show, think the twins from LPS or Veneer and Velvet or Glitz and Glam.

So Clearstorm is the more catty of the two, he kinda hates that Wolfstar is doing better than him but it’s more so the attention she gets. He was also trained by Greyclaw so he had to hear about how much his mentor missed his little sister etc. he thinks she’s over rated and boring. It’s a surface level amount of disdain, I wouldn’t call it hate, it could be any cat that he feels this way towards, not specifically Wolf. He really just loves to bitch and talk shit about someone, and talking trash about Wolf is always gonna make Spark feel better.

Sparkclaw however, oh she hates Wolf, it’s one of those deep seated insecurities. She’s envied Wolf for a long time, she doesn’t think she deserves any of the good that she has. She thinks Wolf’s lineage (which is distantly connected to the founder Duskstar) is wasted on her, she was angry that she didn’t get Jaggedstar as a mentor. Even after Wolf left she tried to switch but was denied. Sparkclaw has a thick layer of bravado, very few see just how much self hatred she has that she then projects onto others. She’s a talented cat and a good warrior, if she could learn to control her temper she’d be deputy one day. Her anger and impulses are self limiting her. Her mentor was Stoatfang (one of Jaggedstar’s closer friends), so she learned to bite her tongue a bit when it came to gatherings since Wolf is a leader now, but when her and Clear are alone? It’s non stop shit talking and gossip.

Together the pair is very gossipy and snarky, it’s mostly harmless and they aim it at the right cats, but they’re walking a thin line with this behavior. It may come back to bite them in the ass. A lot of their own clan thinks they’re dramatic and gossips. They’re not a couple, more like siblings but I could see them co-parenting or siring if one of them really wanted kits.

(What’s crazy is Sparkclaw and Mallowstripe are cousins and are more direct descendants of the second Duskclan leader Scorchstar. She has nothing to be jealous of)

what inspired you to make a nz based warrior cats story?

I have a love of being able to take references and inspiration from places I’ve visited irl so it seemed natural to base the clans somewhere that allowed me to continue that! Plus I love our native animals and plants so it’s fun to represent them.

Obviously irl a feral cat population of the clan’s size would be hugely problematic for native birds lmao. If I ever get proper time and energy I think it’d be fun to develop the story in a way that addresses how destructive the clans are.

Here she is! I‘d felt inspired to make one of these mock covers for Kowhaipaw and the gang ever since I’d seen @/planefood ‘s brilliant work seen here. The og Wayne McLoughlin covers still hold a very special place in my heart.

I don’t plan to make any writing’s for this theoretical warriors oc series, but the concept was really fun! Maybe I’ll do a super edition mockup featuring Doespring or Stoatbite sometime down the line.

Here’s the original sketch btw! I wish I’d kept more of the progress to show, but unfortunately I have a slightly chaotic proccess of deleting/merging/drawing over layers as I go and the earlier stages are buried now, rip.
