Hundreds of demonstrators called on the Doug Ford government Sunday afternoon to halt the development of the Greenbelt in Durham Region. ‘Stop Sprawl Durham’ protesters gathered outside Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy’s office in Pickering, Ont., rallying to save Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve, which makes up nearly 60 per cent of Greenbelt land set to be removed. “This is a non-partisan issue in Pickering,” Abdullah Mir with Stop Sprawl Durham told CTV News Toronto. “We don’t want development on the Greenbelt land largely because we don’t need development on the Greenbelt land.”

In the wake of the Ford government’s decision to dissolve the Region of Peel, local politicians in Vaughan are pushing the province to give the city its independence from York Region, setting the stage for the next battle over municipal governance in the Greater Toronto Area.

The province is expected to appoint facilitators to review the regions of York, Durham, Halton, Niagara, Simcoe and Waterloo to examine whether the two-tier systems should be dissolved, amalgamated or left intact. It’s part of the government’s push to streamline housing construction approvals in Ontario’s most populous cities.

While it remains to be seen what Durham includes in his report, it’s worth noting that the special counsel investigation into Russia’s attempted interference in the 2016 election – run by Robert Mueller – was both a) shorter than Durham’s current probe and b) proved far more criminal wrongdoing.

The Mueller probe led to 37 people and entities charged on 199 criminal counts. Seven people pleaded guilty. Two were convicted at trial. Seven were sentenced to prison. The problems uncovered by Mueller were tied to some of the highest ranking members of Trump’s team – including campaign chairman Paul Manafort and senior White House adviser Michael Flynn.

To date, the Durham probe hasn’t come anywhere near that record. Durham’s final chance to show whether he has actually uncovered anything will come when he issues his final report.

This is, of course, only further proof of how deep the conspiracy against the former president goes.

Or so he will tell his followers.

Conspiracies arise when people believe that a person or an event is too big or important to fall by something simple like a case of the cold, or a lone nut, or a majority of voters choosing the other candidate.

So naturally, the former president is the target of the biggest and best conspiracy of all.
