Tangles: A Cold War Love Story and Mystery by by Kay Smith-Blum
Tumblr media
Summary:
“In a well-crafted debut, Smith-Blum provides the reader a ringside seat to the birth of the nuclear age…a beautifully written, important story…Tangles packs a punch and hits close to home.” –Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of The Tracy Crosswhite Series
Oppenheimer was just the beginning.
When a harpooned whale offers proof the Hanford Nuclear Reservation is endangering all life in the Columbia River Basin, Luke Hinson, a brash young scientist, seizes the chance to avenge his father’s death but a thyroid cancer diagnosis derails Luke’s research. Between treatments, he dives back in, making enemies at every turn. On an overnight trek, Luke discovers evidence that Mary, his former neighbor, embarked on the same treacherous trail, and her disappearance, a decade prior, may be tied to Hanford’s harmful practices mired in government-mandated secrecy.
A love story wrapped in a mystery, this stunning Cold War home-front tale reveals the devastating costs of the birth of the nuclear age, and celebrates the quiet courage of wronged women, the fierce determination of fatherless sons, and the limitless power of the individual.
Tangles is a genre-defying must-read for our time.

Reviews:
"Based on real events, Tangles is an ambitious debut novel that is at once labyrinthine and simply and deeply human. At its heart are generations of secrets and horrific sacrifices played out in the twisted shadows of personal, corporate and government corruption during the advent of the Atomic Age and Cold War. In stunning and engrossing multiple narratives, Smith-Blum reminds us about the devastating and lasting costs of love, loyalty and freedom and, above all, the enduring solace of nature and family." —James Anderson, author of The Never-Open Desert Diner and Lullaby Road
"In a well-crafted debut, Kay Smith-Blum provides the reader a ringside seat to the birth of the nuclear age and its human costs on those living in a small town cloaked in Cold War, government-mandated secrecy. Tangles is a tale of tragedy and loss, but also hope. A beautifully written, important story much like A Civil Action. It packs a punch and hits close to home." —Robert Dugoni, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Tracy Crosswhite Series
"In her knockout debut novel, Tangles, Kay Smith-Blum sheds new light on Hanford. Skillfully blending historical details and nail-biting suspense, Smith-Blum weaves a harrowing story that unfolds across two decades with two complex protagonists you can really root for as they fight against a powerful, government-backed system. Timely as ever, TANGLES is fast-paced, compelling, and unputdownable." —Kevin O'Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Enemy at Home"
"A brilliant, captivating ride...although fiction, Smith-Blum reveals many truths about our radioactive legacy." —Joshua Frank, Award-winning investigative journalist and author of Atomic Days
"Smith-Blum has gorgeously re-created an obscure time and place that were critical to the future of the planet. Her story speaks to us all." —Steve Olson, Award-winning author of The Apocalypse Factory
"Tangles is a fascinating read...set against the backdrop of an important time and little-known place in American history, it keeps the reader guessing. I couldn't put it down." —Michele Gerber, Ph.D., Author of On The Home Front: The Cold War Legacy of the Hanford Nuclear Site
"Tangles is a genre-defying novel that is impossible to set aside. Kay Smith-Blum deftly wields a Cold War dual timeline to deliver readers a doubleheader of a story—the first, a tale of love and loss; the second, a government willing to pull out all stops to hide its responsibility for nuclear contamination. Smith-Blum describes Eastern Washington with talent matching David Guterson, and reveals character in dialogue reminiscent of Annie Proulx. One of the best debut novels I've read!" —Cam Torrens, award-winning author of Stable, False Summit, and Scorched
"Tangles is as gut-wrenching as it is heartwarming. The cast of characters as memorable as the setting. The backdrop is the mass production of nuclear warheads, and the fallout and life-altering consequences are nothing less than tragic, frustrating, and mind-blowing. Kay Smith-Blum is a master storyteller, and she is now on my "go to" list of authors to read, and she should be for you, too! Tangles is a 5 Star, Must Read!" —Joseph Lewis, Author of Blaze In, Blaze Out, Fan Mail, and other tales of the Evans Family
"The world of Tangles is brought to life with Smith-Blum's vivid, rich language that befits such an epic historical tale." —Samantha Dunn, Author of Not by Accident: Reconstructing, a Careless Life, and Failing Paris
"Tangles...is a triumphant artistic reconstruction. Kay Smith-Blum's prose is gentle but it's stands against the deadly gales. This book is hardly just another self-satisfied screed by a know-it-all environmentalist. The love stories that abound--reverberate for generations, just like the diseases foisted on them. Tangles is an ode to the human condition, to the irrepressibility of caring in the face of uncaring dangers. It is also first-rate literature." —Morris Hoffman, author of Pinch Hitting

REVIEW
Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Robert Dugoni
Keera Duggan #2
Twisted tricky thought-provoking legal thriller that drew me in, made me care, and kept me intrigued till the final page.
What I liked:
* Keera Duggan: brilliant, strategic thinker, responsible, dealing with moving from state prosecutor to private practice defense law, loves her family, chess prodigy, sister, has personal-family-work issues to deal with, competitive, learned and grew in this book
* The Duggan Family’s dynamics and learning more about the impact of alcohol on all of them
* Detective Frank Rossi: bright, professional, honest, diligent, mathematical, wants to have a family someday, could see him with Keera in the future…maybe
* P. J. Harrison: ex-detective now private eye used by the Duggan law firm, wise, steadying, intriguing
* The police procedural aspects and how the process was similar and different for the police and Keera – prosecution vs defense
* The plot, pacing, setting, writing
* The backstory of interactions between Keera and her client Jenna
* A quote I wrote down that Rossi’s father liked to say: “If you take sh*t to heart, you die with a heart full of sh*t.
* The way the whodunnit played out with clues offered, followed, and the way the puzzle pieces slotted together – and – the big surprise(s) toward the end
* Knowing that there will be another book in the series
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the negative impact alcohol can have
* Trying to figure out how some of the characters in this book could end up so warped and evil
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
A master manipulator accused of murder. An attorney sworn to defend her. Keera Duggan returns in a riveting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni. When Jenna Bernstein, disgraced wunderkind CEO of a controversial biotech company, is accused of murdering her former partner and lover, she turns to Seattle attorney Keera Duggan to defend her. Keera is more than a master chess player who brings her intuitive moves into court—she’s Jenna’s childhood friend. But considering their history, Keera knows that where Jenna goes, trouble follows. Three years earlier, Keera’s father successfully defended Jenna when she was tried for the killing of her company’s chief medical scientist who threatened to go public with allegations of corporate fraud. Keera knows Jenna too well. When she was a kid, Keera saw Jenna for what she a manipulative and frighteningly controlling sociopath. Now, with only circumstantial evidence against Jenna, Keera is willing to bury any trepidation she might have to defend a woman she believes, this time, to be innocent. As the investigation gets underway and disturbing questions arise, Keera puts her trust in a client who swears nothing but the truth. If this is all just another devious game, Keera might be working to set a murderer free.

Their Resting Place by B.R. Spangler (Detective Casey White #8)
Out in the field the tall stalks sway in the breeze, hiding a girl lying on the ground as if asleep. But she doesn’t stir when rain falls from the gray sky and lands on her soft cheeks. Her beautiful dark eyes stare up, unseeing, as her blood mingles with the rich brown earth.
When a member of Detective Casey White’s team turns up at her door begging for help, Casey races to find the broken body of twenty-year-old Charlie Robson abandoned in a sunflower field. Yellow petals and broken stalks scatter the ground—and Casey immediately recognizes the red markings all over Charlie’s body as arrow wounds. Heartbroken, Casey vows to find the monster who would hunt Charlie down like this. Interviewing Charlie’s distraught mother, Casey’s blood turns to ice when she learns about a tight knit group of Charlie’s best friends who once called themselves The Sunflower Girls. They met in archery club and have drifted apart since high school. Casey knows the killer is sending a message with arrows… could the other girls be next? But as Casey instructs her colleagues to track down the five remaining friends, another girl’s body is found, shot with arrows in her own home. Clutched in her hand is a broken sunflower petal. Turning the house upside down Casey finds a bone-chilling, one-word note: Guilty. Someone is picking off The Sunflower Girls one by one. But why? Interviewing the four remaining girls, Casey is certain they are hiding a dark secret that stretches back to their school days. Trusting no-one, Casey will have to risk everything to track down a deadly killer… but with her own team keeping secrets too, could the real danger be much closer to home? An unbelievably twisty rollercoaster ride that will have fans of Robert Dugoni, Kendra Elliot and Lisa Regan totally hooked until the last explosive page!

My Review: This was an impulse blog tour that is a blog tour I chose to join after reading the blurb and thinking “I must do this”. My gut feeling was spot on because I couldn’t stop reading and had to go back and buy other books in this series (don't ask why I didn't do it before, it's complicated The characters, the plot, the twists were well done and made this story unputdownable. Casey is an interesting character: a strong woman who had to fight to get things right. She’s a well-rounded character, full of nuances and likeable. The plot is twisty and there’s a lot of darkness, we know since the beginning that there’s somebody full of rage and evil who’s killing these girls. Even if there’s enough clues to guess the root cause I couldn’t guess the culprit nor the motive. This is a tense crime thriller but I appreciated the empathy of the author toward the girls, how he dealt with the more sensitive topics and the sufferance of those grieving. A well plotted, gritty, and gripping story that I strongly recommend. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this arc, all opinions are mine.

The Eighth Sister by Robert Dugoni
Official Synopsis:
A pulse-pounding thriller of espionage, spy games, and treachery by the New York Timesbestselling author of the Tracy Crosswhite Series.
Former CIA case officer Charles Jenkins is a man at a crossroads: in his early sixties, he has a family, a new baby on the way, and a security consulting business on the brink of bankruptcy. Then his former bureau chief shows up at his house with a risky new assignment: travel undercover to Moscow and locate a Russian agent believed to be killing members of a clandestine US spy cell known as the seven sisters.
Desperate for money, Jenkins agrees to the mission and heads to the Russian capital. But when he finds the mastermind agent behind the assassinations—the so-called eighth sister—she is not who or what he was led to believe. Then again, neither is anyone else in this deadly game of cat and mouse.
Pursued by a dogged Russian intelligence officer, Jenkins executes a daring escape across the Black Sea, only to find himself abandoned by the agency he serves. With his family and freedom at risk, Jenkins is in the fight of his life—against his own country.

REVIEW
Remember Her Name by Lisa Regan
Detective Josie Quinn #21
Another riveting read that shares a bit more of Josie’s life with us ~ Great addition to the series!
What I liked: * The prologue with Josie new on the job and how that gruesome case eventually plays into the present
* Josie: homicide detective, survivor with huge backstory in the previous books, wife to Noah, strong, resilient, intelligent, team player, compartmentalizes, and the main character of this series
* Noah: police department lieutenant, Josie’s husband, calm, wise, good leader, sees the big picture, there for Josie in more ways than one
* Catching up with characters from previous books in the series
* The glimpse into Josie’s biological family, how they are doing, and the engagement proposal scene
* Kyle Turner: hired after Finn’s death, difficult, inappropriate, glued to his phone, seems a misfit for the team…but also seems to have a backstory I want to hear
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The police procedural aspects
* The murder mystery with its twists, turns, clues, red herrings, and eventual reveal of who the killer was, the motivation of the murders, and some interesting details that tied the story all together
* Thinking about if/when Josie and Noah might or might not adopt and how it will impact their lives
* Wondering if some of the side characters will eventually end up with romantic partners and more on-page time in the series (Luke, Sawyer, Kyle, Misty, Gretchen…
* Everything except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* The killer and a few others in on the killings
* The tie-in to corrupt cops and lawyers in the past and how easy it was for them to get away with things
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
BLURB
Her heart stutters as she draws closer. A woman’s fingertips curl over the boat’s edge. Dark crimson blood clashes with the faded blue peeling paint beneath. They’re too late, the beautiful woman within has been dead for some time… Detective Josie Quinn lifts the baby from the pram, holding her close and gently soothing her. Josie scours the scene for the sweet little girl’s mother, but the park is deserted. Glancing down, something catches her eye. Nestled amongst the child’s soft pink blankets is a polaroid photo, the corner smudged with blood. The search for Cleo Tate has Josie and her team in a chokehold; the abandoned newborn needs her mother, and every second counts now lab results show the blood belongs to her. The blurred photo of a body of water is Josie’s only lead. But what does it mean? And where was it taken? The answer is just within reach, but with Cleo’s husband lying about his movements that day, Josie can’t see it. Then it finally Cold Heart Creek, a crime scene from Josie’s past that she will never forget. Josie is terrified by what she finds Cleo’s body, cold as ice, with a second photo of a new location. A twisted killer is playing a devilish game. And when Josie finds a second innocent victim at the site of a different case she solved, she begins to suspect that she herself is at the very heart of it. But why? As more bodies and more photos follow, Josie must dig deep into the secrets and mistakes of her past to get one step ahead. The link between these women is key to cracking the case. Someone wants revenge, and won’t stop until their story is told, and no one involved is left breathing. Can Josie stop them before any more precious lives are taken? And just what will it cost her? Buckle-up for a totally twisted serial-killer thriller that will keep you flipping pages until dawn. This unputdownable crime thriller from an Amazon, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author is perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.
