i definitely make jokes about daniel being a “cokewhore” on occasion but i feel like some of y’all didn’t grok that he was actually for real real prostituting himself for drugs and it’s kind of an import detail about his character that’s been alluded to throughout the show.

idk i’ve just been seeing a lot of posts about daniel’s sexuality lately and like. in addition to Older Queer Male Repression Classic Flavor, it kinda thunks your thinker that the time when Daniel was most sexually involved with men he was also in a really terrible place mentally and physically, and that sexuality was intrinsically related to his drug use and poverty, and now he does not openly acknowledge his obvious hOmOpHiLe status huh?

Wip TSA / The scarred angel

Chp 8 / A bit of context : Ashley and Amy are on a dangerous journey, Amy asks about drug cartels and Ashley declares she fears them.

........

.....

"I find this hard to believe." Amy scowls, an edge in her voice, not appreciating the irony she's picking up from that statement.

Seriously, how can one be scared and talk with such an aplomb at the same time?

Amy would call it a contradiction at least.

Shoulders shrug : "That's up to you, really." is the matter-of-factly answer.

Ashley's voice is even, as if she's really unconcerned about convincing Amy about that.

The words get almost drown out by the motor's roaring and Amy has to sharp her hearing to grasp them.

Then, after a pause, like she's having a second thought, Ashley adds with a firmer and more audible tone :

"I would be insane not to be."

"What would they do?" Amy prompts her to develop further.

Not sure of the best way to ask for specifics or if an answer would help to release the tension caused by the thought of what might wait for them at the end of that road trip.

As if dissecting a subject had ever helped to dissolve deepest fears.

"You don't need details right now."

Despite the dry answer Amy senses the presence of some dark power lingering between mere words, of course she can't put her finger on but it's definitely there and it has been so for a while.

Of course Ashley wouldn't add anything because, really, what's the point?

Amy thinks otherwise though, she decides that she rather prefers for her to keep talking, even if it's about horrors.

Amy will take it and let herself be lulled by her voice.

"No details huh?" she pulls a different string : "So....what's the best behavior when you deal with those people ?"

A few days before she did want to interview this girl but she never got the chance to prepare the questions so that now she jumps in headfirst.

"You must be kind of brave to face them...." she suggests.

In her innermost self Amy truly believes so, there is no question about that girl being brave.

Somehow she's kind of talking to herself there, rolling ideas as she does just before actually write an article.

But her words fall in no abyss this time.

Ashley snaps her head, brow furrowed and Amy's greeted not with a laugh this time but with a look that one could define as 'outraged up to shocked'.

"Nobody's fucking brave here!" she spits out the words, and this time definitely there is a heat in her voice.

Taken aback Amy instinctively rises hands, palms forwards, in a 'calm down' gesture.

Deep down she'll even think she's the one with reasons to be upset but clearly common conventions don't apply here so that she disregards the thought.

Still too self conscious of the heat invading her nape and the apologetic tone in her own words.

"It's just.....You must be brave to be able to deal with them".

Isn't that fucking obvious?

Amy scans through her souvenirs of what chief Herrera said a few days before, as he'd never knew who had scarred Ashley since she never came clean on that.

Morales's words echo in her head too.

"The day someone from the cartels gets her she's doomed. They don't go easy on fucking snitches."

With the little she saw in the last days and, even more, hours, Amy has a more precise idea how the drug lords would 'take care' of Ashley for tipping the cops.

The thought sends another cold shiver running along her spine but Ashley's following words don't leave her the time to wonder further : "If they catch you generally shut the fuck up, that's what you do!"

She shakes her head in disapproval and tsks : "Or you can pray, if you want. I'll suggest you do it silently though !"

Normally Ashley would either add even more sarcasm to the point of being cruel or grant a silent contempt at most.

But in the long silent minute that follows she finds herself too aware of Amy's eyes upon her instead.

Brow deep in furrow, lips pressed and knuckles getting white around the wheel as she tightens the grip she reconsiders about what to say next and takes a deep breath before quickly glancing back at her.

"That's bullshit Amy. We'll be lucky if they put a bullet in our head right away!"

She pauses then adds gloomy : "If we aren't …."

The blood from Amy's face seems to have drained off, gives her complexion a greenish hue.

Reading fear and anxiety in her look has the power to unexpectedly clutch Ashley's stomach so that she brings her gaze back on the road ahead to avert that sight while abusing her lower lips.

Frowning at her own reaction.

What she knows and consequentially would tell doesn't click with what she's feeling and it's unsettling.

Amy saying - 'Sorry' -, in her small voice, has the power to unsettle her even more.

She has to go back!

Ashley sucks the air in then forcibly huffs it out to release the tension in hands and jaw.

When talking again she puts the effort in for her voice being even : "Do you know what you do if they catch you? You scream, loudest as you possibly can. You scream your guts out....."

For now Ashley decides to not push it.

She still thinks that she's going to get Amy's back on the safe side of the border sooner than later.

In the meantime they finally managed to get into that fucking red mercedes and drive away.

"We'll better make a stop." Ashley states.

Amy rummages on the top pocket of her backpack : "I still have some money and my credit card, we can find something for the night and....SHIT!" 

Ashley gives her a surprised look.

"I have to call Phil!"

Who's Phil?

The question crosses Ashley's mind but she doesn't voice it.

"He must be worry sick, if he already got a news about what happened...." Amy's voice trails off, clearly concerned by that eventuality.

She glares at Ashley : "Too bad, I don't have my phone anymore though..."

Ashley barely arches a brow mostly unimpressed by both the implications and the sarcasm held in the remark but still takes note of Amy's urgency : "We'll get a burner at the next gas station."

Right...

The question sounds stupid in her own head but Amy asks anyway : "What about you? Don't you have someone to call?"

At first Amy is met with the usual silence in the guise of an answer, Ashley's gaze stay fixed at the road ahead.

She's not eager to talk with the chief because he'll ask about Amy and Ashley really doesn't look forwards to answer about that.

Instead she spiels off to herself that Amy will call this Phil guy alright and she'll get whatever flight in a couple of day at the most, away from there.

Ashley will be done with it.

Also, it's unlikely that Herrera knows more than her right now anyway, so, what's the point?

Let the man cook for a couple of days.

"I'll keep in mind to call Herrera, just not today." she cuts it short.

Amy says nothing at first, slightly confused by the unexpected lack of enthusiasm.

Not that the events of the last couple of hours would prove otherwise, it's more likely he needs her than she needs him.

Beside, that girl is a mystery.

Amy's mind wanders to a few days before at the police headquarters and the chief telling the story of how him and Ashley had met.

She can't help to wonder what Ashley's life has been like since.

Has she really been by herself all this time?

Amy's the opposite of a person with an intense social life but finds difficult to believe that Ashley just keep strolls by herself through such a hostile world.

She has known hostile but this is a new different level.

Does Ashley live too in survive mode?

Even with having been directly involved with her endeavors the last couple of hours everything Amy's witnessed still feels alien to her and she certainly must return the same impression.

And yet ..... a flickering thought pops, tastes like certitude.

The most alien of all even if she's still anxious to call Phil to not keep him worried in the dark.

Contentment.

Unexpected contentment.

Being with Ashley makes her content in the weirdest way.

Ashley holds back the last line but the unspoken implication is heavy in the silence that follows until Amy breaks it : "What's the plan then?" tone still numb.

Ashley scoffs : "There is no plan for now.... beside reaching the next location and see what I can find."

Amy doesn't miss she's still saying 'I' as there is no 'We', despite the conversation they had the night before.

She still doesn't count on her which in theory would piss Amy off great time but she opts to let it pass for now.

Ashley's ominous discourse is still rotating in her brain.

This time is Ashley that interrupts Amy's gloomy train of thought : "We're going deeper into Moreno's territory. He's the one that gave the order so I hope to find out more about that".

Her pitch emphasizes the word 'hope'

Then she adds : "Maybe I'll just find out another labo."

"You said you don't think it's drug related...." Amy questions.

"Can't be sure, can't I?"

Ashley gives her a brief look : "They have so much power and yet they seem to bother, that's not how it usually works with border's smuggling which is why I think it might not be the usual business."

Eyes back on the road and a smug grin she ironizes : "I have to keep an open mind!"

"You should, keep an open mind, not just for that!" Amy would like to add but for now she decides against it .

"So it's a blind search for now...." she says instead.

"Yes."

Back to seriousness, Ashley doesn't like that, Amy can tell.
