Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this ARC of Make the Season Bright by Ashley Herring Blake.

This book was messy, and that's great, because I love messy. The characters were messy. The relationships were messy. The friendships were messy. It was all very messy and very dramatic and I loved (almost!) every minute of it.

Of the two leads, I have to admit, I felt more sympathetic towards Charlotte. Brighton certainly went through her fair share of crap situations after their breakup, too, but Charlotte's pain was real and raw and all too understandable. So early on in the story I found myself taking sides - Charlotte's version of events made the most sense to me. However, as we learn Brighton's story, Brighton's reasons behind the breakup, I found the ice in my heart melting for her, too. These were two women put in a series of circumstances they were perhaps too young to handle, and trying to handle them anyway.

So how wonderful they get the opportunity as adults to make it right! But of course, this is a romance book, and it wouldn't be a romance book without a bit of miscommunication and a third act break up. Still, by that point, this book has you hooked - Ashley Herring Blake has a way with characters that will have you on the edge of your seat, begging for more. Speaking of characters, the supporting cast, including Manish, Elle, Wes, Sloane, and Adele, were extraordinary. In some scenes, they stole the show entirely, but Sloane and Adele - as Charlotte and Brighton's best friends - were the most well developed of them all.

The tropes were so much fun. The snowed in, sharing a bed, huddling for warmth, saving her life, all had me wanting for more. I love that for a book that could have easily overdone it on the tropes Ashley Herring Blake actually kept it quite simple. Still, the tropes that were used were used so effectively. And the whole concept of Two Turtledoves was so cheesy it circled all the way back around to sweet.

Finally, I loved how important music was in this story, and how important it was to Charlotte and Brighton. It really added depth to the story and their characters.

I will be looking for Dream On, Ramona Riley when it becomes available!

First off this was very mean to make me choose, I ended up going with specifically new releases I'm excited for!

Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire - Every Heart a Doorway was one of the books that got me back into the habit of reading, it utterly captured me.

Kills Well With Others by Deanna Raybourn - 4 nearly retired female badass assassins, what's not to love?

The Martian Contingency by Mary Robinette Kowal - I've been anticipating this one for years, I can NOT wait. I reread the others last year intending to take my time and I blinked and I had finished them again.

Dream On, Ramona Riley by Ashley Herring Blake - I'm not overwhelmed by the summary for this one, but I have very much enjoyed her other romances, so I'm on board. I hope Kristen DiMercurio is the narrator for the audiobook again.

The Dark Maestro by Brendan Slocumb - I'm a sucker for musical mysteries and Slocumb's have been great.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I've really enjoyed her historicals and this one is following folks in the space program? I'm already obsessed.

The Poppy Fields by Nikki Erlick - I adored The Measure and I'm so looking forward to this one.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab - Listen, it's Schwab, I can't wait.

Infinite Archive by Mur Lafferty - I'm just now realizing that 3 of these are space related, but I really liked how the alien dynamics worked in this universe and I'm excited to see what they get up to next.

Sleepless Domain Secret Agents Riley and Ramona Lean by the awesome and creative @kazenomegaminowanpisu!

As for their official outfits and weaponry:

Riley: Blue dress with white fluffiness around the sleeves (sleeves go down to appx halfway her upper arm), collar, and edge of the skirt (appx knee-length), blue stockings, white ballet shoes. Carries a light blue shield and a white sword. Sword can produce rapid winds that cut through enemies, even from a distance, and shield-bashing can throw enemies into the air and away, though it's more reckless as it requires getting close TO the enemies to begin with

Ramona: Hair up in a bun with a black clip keeping it in place, dark blue dress in the same basic design as Riley's minus the fluffiness, with "tentacles" of black reaching up from the skirt to the collar, dark blue stockings, black sneakers, black gauntlets. Gauntlets deliver bursts of dark magic, which envelope and crush enemies with tentacles, though it may take multiple hits to crush an enemy completely - a good blow to the head usually works, but so does incapacitating it for Riley to finish off

Fraternal twins, they both had their Dreams the same night. While clearly not thematic with each other, their costumes are similar enough that they decided they were "meant" to team up, even though they would have anyways.

I figure Ramona's gauntlets work similarly to HP's punches, able to work from a distance but good for direct hits as well

Riley (fire) and Ramona (ice) Lean, fraternal twins, had their Dreams the same night. Names: Blaze and Breaker. Powers: elemental gauntlets and shields, gauntlets work similarly to HP's punches Brunhilde "Bill" Regina (fire), Dawn Pace (lighting). Best friends, Bill had her Dream nine days before Dawn. Rising tennis stars, their mahou merchandise often featured them with their rackets, and their sports gear always featured their mahou symbol, even after they outgrew their powers. Names: Flash and Flare. Bill has a high jump and Dawn can teleport short distances. "Not popular" as mahous but develop a following as tennis players following their mahou debut. Powers: tennis serves similar to Lime's baseball attack, though they produce the energy from their hands, not their mouths. They are also able to use their rackets defensively, firing monster attacks back at the monsters. They are also capable of conjuring a fused energy ball, but this takes more power and is typically reserved for a final blow, or a staggering attack when they need to retreat. Solo mahou Alyssa "Star Stone" Stone jokingly announced the two teams as "rivals" when they enrolled at Future's Promise at the same time. While the duos became fast friends, they decided that they actually liked the idea of a rivalry, and would often "clash" at the border of their patrol areas Alyssa Stone An acquaintance of HP and her club, didn't join the club herself as she focused on her career skills and academic success. Unlike HP, her choice to go solo was so she could provide backup to teams or other solos who were operating at suboptimal levels, usually meaning injuries or absences, or to join newer girls until they were more comfortable with their nightly patrols. Powers: weapons made of light, and cushioned landings allowing her to drop from heights without injury. Signed on as Bill and Dawn's manager when they switched to tennis as a career, having retired as a mahou the year after the other girls enrolled.

I have created a few Sleepless Domain OCs and attempted to draw one of them today and proceeded to do everything wrong hahaha. I haven't drawn a full-body pic in forever so the proportions were even more awful than I usually wind up with, plus she was too thick-bodied for such spindly limbs.

Haven't decided which of two girls she's meant to be. Thematic duo, fire and lightning elements, fire has high jump and lightning has short-range teleportation, tennis themed attacks similar to Outrageous Lime's baseball (except they serve the balls from their hands, not their mouths). They're "not popular" in the media as MGs alone (minimal merch, don't get many interviews, etc) but have a pretty big following among "real" tennis fans, and get into tennis professionally once they retire as MGs, with another former MG as their manager (she retired the year after they debuted, so they met in the in-between year). Their sports logo matches their MG symbol.

Their names are Brunhilde "Bill" Regina and Dawn Pace. Bill is named after Brun from the comic Questionable Content because I am a nerd.

Update: whoops, they were NOT Bill Pace and Regina Dawn, but I was sleepy when I remembered the proper arrangement of names so I just let it slip until I woke back up lol

Culhane (Robert Christopher Riley) discovers his dark side as he ventures into a new business partnership. Grant Show, Ana Brenda Contreras, Maddison Brown, Sam Adegoke and Alan Dale also star.   David M. Israel and Francisca X. Hu wrote the episode, which was directed by Matt Earl Beesley.

CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND 4.08 “I’m Not The Person I Used To Be”: Greg (Skylar Astin) returns to West Covina, which forces Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) to question things she thought she knew about people she has loved in her life. Meanwhile, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz) and Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) make some shocking discoveries while at their high school reunion.
