What were the earliest the Baudelaires could've died, once ASOUE began?

Part 2: Klaus Baudelaire

Hmm.

This is a toughie.

There is a chance that Klaus could've died as a result of neglect from Olaf's slap in TBB...

...but a very slim chance. So slim that I won't count it.

TRR: Olaf chased all 3 Baudelaires with that massive knife of his - but he very heavily implied that the knife was meant for Sunny.

So again, unlikely.

The closest I think, is during TMM: Klaus is likeliest to have died following Dr Orwell's orders, under hypnosis.

Imma start off by saying I'm real sorry and any trauma caused is not my fault.

This is a bunch of abandoned doodles I did a couple of years ago but I recently remembered that the song "50 Ways To Say Goodbye" by "Train" existed and it's the ONLY thing I have been listening to for the past 3 days. Anyway these doodles are each relating to a way to say goodbye, or I tried twisting it to somehow fit? (Kinda, not really) It's the best I got. ALSO MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ASOUE.

Count Olaf’s whole thing in The Miserable Mill has to be one of his most unsettling schemes.

I wouldn’t say that waiting for him or his associates show up lulled the Baudelaire’s into a false sense of security, but I can say that being so vigilant that long can really fatigue you.

On top of that is his mark (the eye). First with the shape of his [Dr Orwell’s] office, and second with the cover of Advanced Ocular Science. Unless Its canon—can’t remember whether it is cause I haven’t reached that far yet—I headcanon that Count Olaf donated that book as a taunt.

And again, I know—knew—that Count Olaf was being incredibly wicked when I first read these books, but now that I’m older, I guess I’m seeing more clearly just how much he tormented them???

"Right." Paradox, lanky like a cat, slides into their partner's lap. "It'd be a shame not to go together, but I'm sure we'll at least get buried together. And that's what matters."

"Together in life..." He squeezes their hand. "Together in death."

HESTER O'HARA

A swallow, tense and thick.

"Jesus, why would you ask something like that?" He looks away, hands shoved in his pockets as he sweats, nervous. "Fuck off, I-"

She grits her teeth. The less he thinks about it the better, really, but...

"Probably. Yeah." It comes out softer than she means it to, more shaky and less strong. "I mean- partway there, really. Whether it haunts me- wouldn't it haunt anyone?"

He fidgets, staring away. "Ten. Leave me alone."

DR. SHELLEY

"Regret?" She laughs, smiling in a way to show teeth. "Darling, do you know the type of person I am?"

She leans back in her hair, taping on the desk with her pen. "I find it such a silly word, regret. To act like there's a point in feeling sorry for yourself, actions you took all on your own."

She rocks in her chair, back and forth. Eventually, the smile drops somewhat, becoming more somber.

"Well... I was going to call this a one and move on, but I had to think for a moment- so let's call it a three. After all..." Tap. Tap. "I'm not exactly pleased with the Bloodwolf being half a child. And had I known Teruko's true identity, she would not exist."

Tap. Tap. Tap.

"Is that satisfactory enough?"

GEORGE ORWELL

"...My childhood, huh?"

He scratches at his neck, a long held nervous habit he's never gotten rid of.

"Uh- I don't... think about it much. It feels weird to, really, cause things used to be so... quiet, I guess? Simple. Uh... miss the pigs. Most of the animals, really, they're all... long gone, now."

He laughs, somewhat nervously.

"I guess I miss how I used to be happy, really. But it seems a little odd to focus on that of all things, eh?"

He stares out the window, fog covering the city, and scratches his neck again.

"Six- no, seven. That's how... hard it was."
