I've been thinking and from what we see in Dragon Age Origins there aren't really? Places? For the children? In the circle tower? We see children walking around, Wynne is protecting them during broken circle and we know magic manifests during childhood. And yet for all that the tower doesn't seem to have a cresh or children's toys or spaces where children could run around and play? It doesn't even seem to have just like. A separate room for them to learn/hang in. The apprentice floor is largely taken up by the tightly packed dorms and the huge library and not much else.

What do you think its like for a child in that environment? Constantly watched by templars, yes, but also with nothing really made for your age group to engage with. I can imagine the young apprentice mages running through the library being a regular occurrence as they work out their childhood energy - "slow down" shouted after them but everyone just kinda accepts it because what else are they going to do? Kids making prank games or stealing games or "how high can you get up the tower before your noticed" games? Kids being loud and crying in places where tired young adults just want to study (maybe that's why there's the big library downstairs and a smaller one upstairs for mages who passed the harrowing and don't want to deal with children making a racket as they try and write their magical theory proposals?)

Kids who were ripped from their parents now being placed in a really large dorm with a bunch of older scary people and what are they going to do? Trying not to be too obvious about their tears. Maybe climbing into the bed of an older apprentice they trust or a fellow young mage they were brought to the tower with.

Idk man. Children in the circle and the lack of space/provisions for them is just. Wild.

It's always so weird to come down from the biology heavens to see what the average person believes about animals, plants, ecosystems, just the world around them. Being someone who read Under The Red Hood and came out with the firm belief that, for Jason, it's not about killing Joker, it's about Jason wanting proof Batman would choose him over the Joker (bc shelia chose the joker). Makes seeing any other media where it's all about just wanting the Joker dead is a teeny bit frustrating. to be honest

Jason could've killed the Joker himself, really, really easily. Jason kidnaps the Joker before the confrontation. I can't open my comic for a reference right now, but it felt like he had the Joker for quite a bit before the confrontation. He had him. He beat him up with a crowbar. He had every single opportunity to kill the Joker himself, but he didn't because that wasn't his goal. Make no mistake, he did plan for the Joker to be dead by the end of it, but do you see what im trying to say here

It's not about making Batman kill either. When Batman says he won't kill, Jason adjusts and goes, 'Let ME kill the Joker or kill me to stop me' instead. The test is all about Batman choosing him. The whole final confrontation is Jason's first death again. The parent, The Joker, and the explosives. It even ends with Jason unable to move as a bomb goes off right next to him again because the parent didn't choose Jason. And instead tried finding an option that'd benefit them and (consequencely) letting the Joker walk, again, lol, lmao <-in agony

the way that carmy made the best meal sydney has ever had and he just had a feeling on a whim to make it his own instead of the sanitized, stripped down and "othered" version that was basically stolen from him by his boss ("you know this is my dish now right"). he said "fennel allergy" when we know from the very first time that sydney cooked the family meal in the pilot episode and she made a fennel salad that he just made it up! the whole episode builds up how his boss has been insulting him and stripping his individuality away from his dish and you can tell he doesn't like it and you can tell that he thinks something is missing from the stolen dish and you can tell that he doesn't like serving what he's serving. so the one time that he follows his instincts and makes it how he wanted it and has it served that way is for sydney? and it was the best meal she ever had?? the bear is a love story!!

I love that everyone in TMA is just. Unremarkable. Jon isnt a heroic character; he's self-loathing and depressed and he exhibits the same self-pity as I do when I'm self-loathing and depressed. He doesn't stand out for his strength of will or quick-thinking or virtue. He's a good person but he stops trying to stay human when it gets uncomfortable. He's everything that a regular person is when theyre trapped in a horrible situation and it's ugly and insufferable and Real.

pisses me off to no end when people on reddit or whatever complain that the show wouldve been better off without the tuunbaq.....did we watch the same show? the tuunbaq is everything, it held everything together. the tuunbaq is the main transformative element of the terror. the tuunbaq elevates the text beyond mere historical fact and lets it say something about the expedition's broader context of imperialism. it hunted the british men who were trampling on its home as a mere stopover, a side casualty, to finding the northwest passage (for, you know, "trade with china" after britain beat china into submission after the imperialist opium war). silna couldnt complete a proper ritual with it because of the british men - just as british colonizers have historically intruded and disrupted the practice of indigenous culture. and in the end the tuunbaq dies, after all the injuries it's taken from the british over the course of 10 episodes and finally chokes to death on the worst of them. because there's no escaping the reality of colonial history, and there is especially no fantastical escape for the colonizer. there's no proper way for us to move forward otherwise.

good historical fiction doesnt have to limit itself to accuracy - it needs empathy to draw out meanings in history using literary craft. thats what the tuunbaq means to me.... if you wanted a straight depiction of historical record, just go watch a documentary.. TUUNBAQ DENIERS DNI
