> Be Dave Strider. You had therapy this morning, so you got to skip some of your second day of school. No waiting in the lobby with Roxy for you. Yay. Aunt Rosa actually had to take you this time. Which, it's a good thing Uncle D added her to the check in list like, really early on, or that would've been a problem. You and Dirk were told you'd be spending more time with Aunt Rosa when school started, but you still hadn't really been… prepared for it. At least you know how you're supposed to be checked in when you're late now. And you end up showing up to school at the same time as Sollux. It's… third period now, Physics. You have that class together, so you're able to get directions and walk to class together too. It makes the trek feel less nerve-wracking. “Hey, go straight to class, no pit stops. Okay?” Dirk says, looking straight in your eyes. You nod in affirmation. “I know, I won't. Wasn't planning to.” “Alright, good.” He drops his hand in your hair and ruffles it. “I'll see you in Sign Language.” “Are you coming or what?” Sollux asks from the end of the foyer. You blink and swat Dirk's hand away. “Yeah, I'm coming. Later.”

Libra Season ⚖️💖 September 23 - October 22
As the leaves begin to change colors and the days grow shorter, Libra season is ushered in. Falling between September 23rd and October 22nd, Libra season is a time of balance, harmony, and transformation. Ruled by the planet Venus, this astrological season brings with it a unique set of energies that impact both individuals and the collective in profound ways. In this blog post, we'll explore the effects of Libra season on the individual and the collective, shedding light on the transformative magic it brings.
Symbol: The Scales Modality: Cardinal Element: Air Ruling Planet: Venus Colors: Ivory, Pink & Light Blue Body: kidneys, skin, lumbar region, endocrine system, & buttocks Tarot Card: Justice
Fairness • Justice • Harmony • Beauty
Famous Libra Suns: Cardi B, Doja Cat, Kim Kardashian, Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, Kate Winslet, Will Smith, Snoop Dogg, Halsey, Dakota Johnson, Oscar Wilde, Dita Von Teese, Donald Glover, Jeff Goldblum
Libra season begins on the Autumn Equinox, which marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox is a time of balance, as day and night are of equal length. This is fitting for the Libra archetype, which represents balance and equality. Libras are also known for their fairness and diplomacy. They are often seen as mediators and peacemakers, and they strive to create harmony in all aspects of their lives.
The zodiac symbol for Libra is The Scales, named for the constellation associated with the goddess Themis, who ruled over justice and law. You know her, because she is depicted at courthouses, lawyer firms, and law schools. Themis was renowned for her clear sight, and in some cases she is blindfolded, representing her alignment with ‘The Eye’, an all-seeing supernatural vision that allowed her to see through complexity and lies.
Justice is the Tarot Card associated with Libra. This card depicts a calm and balanced judge-king figure (a Themis-like figure), seated between two pillars echoing the equilibrium of The Scales. The Justice Card tends to appear to help us meditate on our choices. In the left hand the scales weigh out the pros and cons, and in the right hand the sword represents intellect that is in this case, pointing toward the heavens for guidance.
Venus is the ruler of both Libra and Taurus. Venus has affinity for the harmonious archetype of this sign. Venus is peaceful, diplomatic and loving. Venus has an elegant, beautiful, and graceful element that comes forth in Libra. Venus reminds us of all things that bring us pleasure and make us happy. Venus also rules attachment to others, and Libra is sociable.
Libra has ease in social connections and explores the world with poise, akin to the active, flowing air element it’s associated with. Libra is a cardinal sign, taking leadership in diplomacy and social justice. Libra’s sense of purpose comes from making social and creative connections. Libra’s mantra: ‘I relate’ reflects moving forward in society to uphold love, beauty, justice and truth for all.
Libras are known for good taste, elegance and charm. Libras are social creatures, and very approachable. Libras are always looking for the best way, or right way, to live. Artistic pursuits provide an outlet for their love of beauty.
Libras have a tendency to always support both sides. In the process of seeking balance, they try to be everything for everyone. It's easier for them to tell people what they want to hear, vs. what they're actually thinking. They want to be liked and will be genuinely bothered if you view them negatively.
Their natural mode is living in partnerships with others. Intimate relationships are important to them, as are issues of social justice. Libras benefit from strengthening their will to act in favor of their high purpose, which ultimately lies in dedicating themself to humanity at large rather than one individual person (or thing). Libra’s sense of purpose is all about making social and creative connections.
How Can Libra Season Affect You?
Libra represents the pursuit of balance and harmony in all aspects of life. During this time, we can see an increase in social activism, with people and organizations working towards a more just society. Diplomatic efforts and negotiations could become focal points on the global stage. Art exhibitions, music festivals, and cultural events thrive as people seek beauty and inspiration in our lives.
In our personal lives, Libra Season is a time to focus on relationships, creativity, and intellect. We often feel a heightened sense of the need for equilibrium during this time. This may manifest as a desire to reevaluate relationships, work-life balance, and personal values. We can look at our core values and ethical principles, adjust them and see how they have changed over time. We can evaluate where we need balance in our lives.
Libra has the ability to see things from all sides, which makes it more difficult to make decisions. Libra's indecisiveness can be both a blessing and a curse. While it may lead to overthinking, it also encourages careful consideration of options. Use this energy to make well-balanced decisions that align with long-term goals, the higher self and things that benefit our well-being!
Libra is known for its social nature and love for partnerships. We may find ourselves drawn to deepening existing relationships or seeking new connections. We may be more interested in talking to others and learning new things during Libra Season. It's a great time for introspection, where we might ponder what we bring to our relationships and what we seek in return.
Libra's diplomatic nature encourages us to approach conflicts with a more rational and fair-minded attitude. It's an ideal time to address unresolved issues and seek resolutions that benefit everyone.
We may have a heightened appreciation for art, fashion, and design. It's a great time to redecorate our living space or explore creative endeavors. Explore your personal style and aesthetic preferences. Visit a local art exhibit.
Libra season is a transformative and enriching time. As we embrace the energies of balance, harmony, and fairness, we can find opportunities for personal growth, improved relationships, and a collective push towards a more just and equitable world. So, whether you're reevaluating your personal values or joining a social cause, remember that Libra season's magic encourages us all to seek harmony within ourselves and in the world around us.
Journal Prompts for Libra Season:
Reflect on the areas of your life where you feel a lack of balance. What steps can you take during Libra Season to restore equilibrium?
Write about a recent decision you had to make. Did you find it challenging to strike a balance between different options? How did you ultimately decide?
Write about the most significant relationships in your life. How can you enhance the balance and harmony within these connections?
Explore your boundaries in various aspects of life, such as work, relationships, and self-care. Are there boundaries in various aspects of life, such as work, relationships, and self-care that you need to establish or adjust to maintain balance?
How can you foster better teamwork and cooperation?
List five things of beauty you're grateful for in your life right now. How can you incorporate more beauty into your daily routines?

Film: The Martian review
(Source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3659388/mediaviewer/rm1391324160/)
Release date: 30th September 2015 Duration: 2hrs 41 mins Genre: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi Directed by: Ridley Scott Rated: 12 Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michela Pena, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, Benedict Wong, Mackenzie Davis
Directed by Ridley Scott, (famously known as the director of other well-known sci-fi films such as Alien, Prometheus and Blade Runner) The Martian is a film based on the novel of the same name written by Andy Weir. In a Film4 interview special, Scott explained that The Martian is a very well adapted screenplay of the book and it is very faithful to the book. He also goes on to say that what intrigued him about The Martian was the puzzle of science and how it tied in closely to a very strong character who would not allow fear and terror make him succumb to the idea of dying.
Set in 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars are exploring on Sol 18 (Martian solar day) of their 31-sol expedition. Not long after, they are hit with a dust storm and decide to abandon their mission. They evacuate but crew member Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is hit by debris and gets lost in the storm. Presumed dead, the crew leave using their orbiting vessel, the Hermes. Watney survives the storm and wakes up to find that he is injured. He returns to the crew’s surface habitat “the Hab” where he performs surgery on himself. Unable to communicate with Earth, Watney believes his only chance of rescue is by the next Mars mission in four years where the Area IV will land 2,000 miles away. Worried about food shortages, he makes a garden inside the Hab using Martian soil fertilized with the crew’s bio-waste and manufactures water from leftover rocket fuel. On Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park (Mackenzie Davis) realises Watney is alive while reviewing aerial Hab images. NASA director Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) publicly releases the news but doesn’t tell the Ares 111 crew so they can continue with their mission. Watney finds the nearby Pathfinder and uses the camera and motor to establish two-way communication with Earth, starting with hand-written signs. NASA transmits a software patch to link the rover with Pathfinder which allows them to communicate via text. Watney doesn’t blame the crew for leaving him behind and eventually, they find out that he is still alive. Mars mission director Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) director Bruce Ng (Benedict Wong) prepare an Iris space probe to deliver enough food to survive until Ares IV’s arrival. The mission fails as the rocket explodes after lift-off and Watney’s hope for getting back to Earth slowly diminishes. The China National Space Administration has been developing a classified booster rocket called the Taiyang Shen and offer to repeat the Iris mission. Watney’s situation continues to deteriorate until JPL astrodynamicist Rich Purnell (Donald Glover) comes up with an alternative plan; he suggests that the Taiyan Shen meets and resupplies the Hermes which will then use Earth’s gravity to slingshot back to Mars two years earlier than Ares IV. Watney begins the journey to Schiaparelli where the MAV for Ares IV has been pre-positioned. After take-off, the MAV fails to reach the required speed so the crew resort to making a bomb to better align the ship. In a Manned Manoeuvring Unit, Lewis (Jessica Chastain) is unable to reach Watney as the tether is too short. Watney pierces his pressure suit and uses the air as thrusts to head towards Lewis and reunite with the rest of the crew. At the end of the film, we are shown that Watney has become survival instructor for astronaut candidates after coming back to Earth.
Despite the lengthy duration, this film was appropriately paced and worth watching. The storyline was straightforward: an astronaut is stranded on Mars and the film follows his progress and journey to get back to Earth. However, when it came to the storytelling there was a mixture of things: the use of diary entries, updates on the movement of the protagonist and what was happening back on Earth. It is these different elements that kept viewers eager and hopeful for Watney to return to Earth. The witty and comedic aspects of Watney’s character also lightened the seriousness of it all. Although the genre of The Martian is considered to be sci-fi overall, it is a film suited for all audiences and not just sci-fi lovers.
The Martian is available to buy on DVD from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Martian-DVD-Matt-Damon/dp/B015Q04ET6/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=the+martian&qid=1615835830&s=dvd&sr=1-3

Name: Micah Ryland Age: 25 House: Hufflepuff Bloodstatus: Halfblood Call-sign: Bandage Division: Medical Branch Faceclaim: Donald Glover Headcanons:
The most recent member of Katie Thorne’s squad Micah Ryland actively doesn’t like his new superior officer. They attended Hogwarts in the same year, and he studied hard and long to do the difficult dual Healer-Auror track to joining the Auror’s Medical division. He has a slight resentment that Katie even got to join, he knows he track record and her grades, he finds her unfit for service in the Aurors, but the rest of the squad likes her, so he keeps his mouth shut to keep the peace.
Micah is a member of arguably the hardest track in the Auror Department, as a Healer he is responsible for injuries on all missions, helping save and rescue victims, and also being the defensive wall for the team. It’s a heavy responsibility but Micah rises to the occasion with sheer determination and will.
Micah has a younger sister, Freddy Ryland, who is his inspiration behind becoming a Healer after watching her go through medical issues his whole life. As such he is best with children, having a sister so much younger than him, and takes his role in saving lives seriously. He often does volunteer rounds at St. Mungo’s between missions and has become good friends with members of the staff there.
Name: Trisha Laghari Age: 19 House: Gryffindor Bloodstatus: Pureblood Call-sign: Blockbuster Division: Special Forces Branch Faceclaim: Naomi Scott Headcanons:
The youngest of Katie’s squad she is part of the Special Ops Branch and loves Katie’s ‘Get the Job Done or Die’ attitude. It mixes well with her own bombastic taste. The Special Ops Branch, better known as the Body Bag Branch, has the highest kill and be-killed count of any of the Divisions. They specialize in being total offensive walls and the backbone of any mission. Their ranks are filled with duelists and offensive magic users.
Trisha specializes in curses and hexes, is a bit of a hothead and after hours can be found letting off steam in the closest bar or brothel she can find. She is a regular at the Dueling Halls of the Aurors, she doesn’t look it though, with her looks and charm, though everyone is in for a treat when she gets to let loose.
Chances are if anyone remembers her from Hogwarts they remember the fights she would get into, how vicious of a Beater she was, and how much of a partier she is. Though a good Auror, and a great duelist, many think that she got into the Department because her family is pureblood and old old magic.
Name: Lt. Flora Kahina Age: 23 House: Hufflepuff Bloodstatus: Halfblood Call-sign: Changeling Division: Infiltration & Investigation Branch Faceclaim: Sofia Boutella Headcanons:
If anyone is a master of disguise it’s Flora Kahina, she flew Infiltration ranks as an Auror and has been happily doing the work of getting in good with all sorts of rough-and-tumble wix all over England. Often sent abroad on loan to other Magical Governments Flora has just returned from a 3-year stint in MACUSA. She would be a common face to any criminal if she wasn’t so good at changing it. Flora is a Metamorphmagus, one of the few and proud.
Flora can speak 5 languages and has an ear for accents. She is most likely to let folk off with a warning should they do any wrong doing in front of her, and often enjoys toying with criminals that piss her off. She is gregarious, bright, and happy to lend anyone a hand and loathes anyone that won’t help anyone in need. She is not fond of Roland Sidewinder as a result and will talk to shit to anyone who hears, including folk at the bars she often frequents.
Having recently moved to Diagon Alley after a long few years away she often roams the marketplace on her day off, she challenges folk to pick-up Quidditch games and plays ball with the kids in the street. She isn’t shy about being an Auror and showing off her badge, she’s proud and delighted to be a member of the Auror Department.
Name: Atlas Rath Age: 20 House: Slytherin Bloodstatus: Pureblood Call-sign: Bruiser Division: Strategy & Intelligence Branch Faceclaim: Cameron Monoghan Headcanons:
If Roland was the sort of Slytherin getting by on self-preservation, then Atlas was the sort filled with ambition. He chafes under regulation and conduct rules, be believes that the end will always justify the means. He doesn’t bunk heads with his new superior office Captain Thorne, he likes the way she also chafes under the regulation of the Auror Department.
Atlas admires the Auror Department for redeveloping in the wake of the Second Wizarding War, but he thinks they’ve grown weak as the criminal underground continues unchecked in the new century. It isn’t uncommon for Atlas to bring in criminals on his day off, using excessive force during capture and strategizing the best outcome to break someone’s spirit. He has a darker edge to him and wants to see the criminal underbelly of the Wizarding World crushed under his boot. Unbeknownst to him, Cmdr. Reese has her eye on him.
Atlas doesn’t do well with children, but teenagers like him, which he finds odd. He’s awkward when out of uniform, and though handsome rarely dates. He lives in Diagon Alley, in the apartment buildings over from his new squad mate Flora, and is often dragged with her around Diagon Alley during their off days. He likes plants, they don’t talk back to him, and can be found snipping cuttings.

The Local Shooter Vs. AHNIST
(LS) Hello and thank you for allowing me to interview you today If you can start by introducing yourself and where you are from?
(A) Grateful for the opportunity. My name is Martin, I perform under the alias Ahnist and am originally from Orlando, FL. Now residing in Los Angeles, California.
(LS) How did you find your passion for music, and can you remember the first time you recorded?
(A) The passion came around 2005 from exposure to artists like Kanye West and Eminem who broke barriers to me lyrically and visually. First time recording must've been when I was 15 and using some type of old desktop mic or headset - primitive I know! Used the Us Placers beat from the almost-supergroup CRS.
(LS) How would you or someone who's never heard your music explain your sound or genre?
(A) Experimental theme music. Something you would expect from a blockbuster trailer or an anthem a wrestler would walk out to that hypes up an arena. Hip-hop is the foundation of it and those elements of cinema or WWE-esque theatrics help express it.
(LS) What's the next move for you as far as visuals or shows? Is there anything special planned in the last few months of the year?
(A) Next move visually is a video with one of my partner-in-crimes Vivec (IG: shinkyuu_) (soundcloud.com/lord.vivek) and director Simri (IG: obscro) for our collab tape Rush Hour. Shows are still TBD from COVID but never say never. For the last few months of 2020 an EP will pop up come hell or high water. Manifesting this thing one way or another.
(LS) Do you think there's any other group or artists you would collaborate with in your city or outside the city?
(A) Locally, definitely fascinated how a tune would sound with Belis. She's got a great upbeat, quickdraw delivery I'm a fan of. Then outside of L.A., anyone from my hometown or residing areas/states down south - Sylvan Lacue, LE$, etc. If by chance my homie Dabnap Nate reads this - PLEASE RELEASE OUR SONG ALREADY DAWG. ITS A BOP.
(LS) What is the recording process like for you? Are you picky about location and vibes?
(A) Recording is mostly the peaceful part. All the time before the booth is obsessive, stressful editing and memorization. Always a ton of water near me and awkwardly holding my notebook or phone over the equipment. In a handful of takes it's accomplished and I can finally rest knowing it's saved somewhere. With vibes, I do prefer the less folks there, the better. Unless of course we're working on a song with multiple features. As far as location, Goldmind Studios run by Will Santos in Pasadena has been my favorite spot to lay it down. Owe him a visit ASAP.
(LS) As far as the music scene, do you think you get the recognition you deserve for being such an underground artist or do you think you are growing and that's the least of your worries?
(A) Continually growing and thankful to still be. Recognition from my peers, I'm insanely appreciated of. Recognition from more heads will come in due time as I continue to pay my dues. What would Bobby McFerrin say? - Don't worry.
(LS) Where can one work with AHNIST?!
(A) Based in Los Angeles, so always good to meet up around the city and work / record / transcendentally meditate lyrics, what have you. On my trips back home to visit the 407, absolutely willing to schedule recording time and lay work down there too.
(LS) Can we expect anything new coming from you very soon or do we just have to keep our eyes peeled?
(A) A single most indeed sooner than later and the music video as mentioned before by year's end I believe.
(LS) Where do you see yourself in the future? Are you looking to sign a deal, stay independent maybe even start your own label some day?
Thank you for allowing me to interview you today is there anything else you would like to mention? Shout outs? Music links? Social Media?
(A) The routes taken by those such as Tyler, The Creator and Donald Glover as entrepreneurs/ jack of all trades inspires me towards what they've accomplished. Starting a label would likely be my first of many steps in music, entertainment, and beyond, God willing.
Thank you for your time and questions. Just would like to say please vote and drink more water.

you may not be blood, but you’ll always be family {Jim “Miami” Beach} (Platonic)
Summary: You’re a singer with EMI, just trying to get your solo career off the ground, but it’s been a bad night, and sometimes you just need a hug from your lawyer, friend, and pseudo-father-figure.
A/N: 1175 words. Wow my desire for Miami to tell me he’s proud of me really jumped out, huh. Anyways literally no-one asked for this but it came to me and like with all the other stories that aren’t prompted, I had to write this and get it out of my head so I can immediately forget I ever wrote it. (i tend to do that, honestly) anyways, miami loves you like he’s ya dad and is proud of you, the self indulgent fic. (also, i know it’s usually used a romantic song, Somewhere Out There - specifically the cover done by Donald Glover and Danny Pudi in season 1 of Community - just makes me soft and content and it’s what i was listening to the entire time i wrote this)
When Miami answers the phone at half past one in the morning, and all he hears on the other end of the line is your gentle sobbing, his irritation is quickly replaced with concern.
“Y/N?” He knows it’s you the moment you ask his name, voice trembling. He asks where you are, and you tell him that you’re at the recording studio, that you’d really appreciate being picked up.
You hadn’t been making music for long; you’d started out as a backup singer for a solo artist, and it was only when a few of your friends and family, Miami included, told you to look at a career of your own, that you followed their advice. It wasn’t as if you were a big name in the industry, quite the opposite in fact, the only reason you were even halfway connected to any big names was the fact that Miami, then known as just Jim Beach, took a shine to you when you were first signing your contract.
That was a few years ago, however, and by now, Jim had fit into his role of your pseudo-father-figure without hesitation. It was hard, your own family didn’t know how to deal with your career, and your friends your age had their own problems to deal with and didn’t need your teary, early morning calls when you had someone you knew would pick you up without question.
He doesn’t wait in the car when he arrives, doesn’t just honk the horn and wait to see you come out of the building, he gets the security guard to let him in, and he makes his way to the studio you’d been recording in, and hugs you as soon as he sees you. His expression is serious and concerned, no hesitation as he moves to sit you on the sofa, rubbing comforting circles across your back.
“It’s alright.” He assures quietly, his voice firm, as if daring the universe to fuck up this moment for you and face the consequences. You’re past crying, have been past crying for about ten minutes, five minutes after you got off the phone with him. Hugging him back, however, face pressed into the sweater he’d pulled on over his pyjama shirt, you can’t help but tear up a little.
“Is this from overworking, or did something happen?” When he asks, his voice is gentle but clinical, not wanting to dance around your emotions. It takes you a moment to clear your throat, sniffling before you speak, words a little muffled where you had your forehead against his shoulder.
“A bit of both,” you admit, and he hugged you a little tighter, not pushing you for further explanation, giving you the time you need to order your thoughts, “one of the executives came by to watch me record,” you murmur, voice catching a little at the still very fresh memory, “and he had some... less than kind feedback for me.” Finally you pull out of Miami’s hug, throwing yourself back onto the sofa in exasperation, wiping your eyes, a little infuriated that the memory provoked such a reaction from you. “And you know - you know - I try not to let shit like this get to me, but it was so late, and there’s just been some horrible stuff in magazines recently. I feel so stupid right now.” You huffed, pouting despite yourself.
“Who?” Miami asks, getting up from the sofa and making his way to the sound desk, searching around for a pen and paper.
“Who what?” You asked, faintly confused, and he gives you a thoughtful look. When he comes back to sit beside you, he’s poised and ready to write.
“Who said those things about you?” He asked, and when you respond with a first name, hesitating before you explain that you don’t know his last name, just know him by sight, Miami asks you to describe him.
“Executives aren’t allowed in the recording studio; it’s in your contract,” he explains, jotting down the notes you give him on the man. His words give you reason to pause, taken aback.
“That’s- when I was working with-” you try to protest, but he looks up at you, notepad balanced on his knee.
“It’s in your contract; it’s in all my clients’ contracts. It contaminates the integrity of the artist’s work.” He explains, before looking back down, “it’s blatant unprofessionalism, you wouldn’t invite a critic to a recording session, it’s an unfinished product and he had no right to give his unsolicited opinion like that.” There’s a sudden rush of affection that you feel as you watch him jot down a few more notes.
“But what if he’s right, what about the magazines-” You try, but he’s tearing off the page definitively, folding it up to hold tight in his hand.
“Music’s always been subjective, and critics have always been harsh; I happen to think you’re a lovely singer.” And with that he stands, offering you his free hand. “Let’s get you home, it sounds like it’s been a long day for you.” He muses, and there’s tears in your eyes again, but for a very different reason.
“You’ll be alright?” He asks, stopped outside of your house, looking up at the door with a little bit of doubt.
“Dude, I’m an adult.” You tell him, and he fixes you with a fond smile.
“I know,” his voice is surprisingly soft, “I just worry about you,” and when you go to protest, his lips twist into an amused grin as he speaks over you, “even though-”
“Even though I’ve told you that you don’t need to!” You reiterate a statement you’d said once or twice in the past, but he never seems to listen, and part of you is glad he doesn’t.
“Good night, Y/N, and take care, alright?” He asks as you’re unclipping your seatbelt, and you nod obligingly.
“Of course, you too,” but as you open the door to step out, you take the moment to look back at him, where he’s watching you with a faintly expectant smile, “I really do appreciate you, Miami.”
“Thank you, Y/N, you know I’m always here for situations like this.”
He’s not really your dad, but you know as he drives you home, as he helps you release your new EP, as you wave goodbye to the executive who it turns out had been harassing a lot of artists whose contracts he didn’t personally have a hold on, you know Miami’s proud of you.
When he leaves EMI with Queen, he doesn’t leave you behind. You go through scandals and heartbreaks and more PR crisises than any one person should, but he’s always in your corner, picking you up from parties, pubs, even out of the gutter a few times, and he does it without complaint. It’s hard to trust in this industry, to know who wants you for your name and fame, but the years and the fair weather friends come and go, but the sun always sets behind you on Miami Beach, and with the man himself, he's always there to back you up.

Over the last few days I’ve really been reflecting on my journey as a Star Wars fan. Honestly it’s been such a big part of my life for so long. Like yes I was a Potterhead before I became a Star Wars fan but as much as I loved those books, it’s nothing on how obsessed I was and am with Star Wars. I remember being in 7th grade when started paving through this LEGO Star Wars book that my aunt bought my brother because he liked LEGOs and for some reason I just started reading it and suddenly I was swept away by the story and I’d actually seen EP I before but had mostly brushed it off. But after that seemingly random encounter with that book I fell down the longest rabbit hole and dragged my entire family with me. Luke Skywalker was arguably my first fictional crush and I was OBSESSED. Like I had posters, print-outs, and hand drawn art all over one wall of my room and went on to buy the big clunky toy version of his lightsaber. Over that year I collected all the movies on DVD, read the novelizations of the films, read part of the screenplays for the original trilogy, bought the huge hardback visual dictionary and religiously lugged that thing to and from school. I swear I knew the most obscure niche things because of that book...
Then came the new trilogy. I can’t put into words how I felt sitting in a movie theater on Christmas Day in 2015, four years since my journey had started, about to see the 9th film I never would have dreamed would be made. Seeing all of that on a huge screen, the theme music, the familiar opening, but this time brand new, not a rerun. Say what you want about the movie itself but I remember walking out of the theater feeling like I was walking on clouds.
In my senior year of high school, I remember going to Rogue One with my dad, brother, and one of his friends. This time we went to an IMAX theater with the perfect seats in the center of the back row. Again, I was blown away and couldn’t believe how well done it was, even if everyone had to die.
Then The Last Jedi, my freshman year of college. This time with my mom and brother. Same theater, similar seats, and I walked out of that movie on a high. In my opinion then, and still to this day, it was the best Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi. It still sits snuggly at #4 on my ranking of the films beneath the original trilogy.
Solo... oh Solo... admittedly my hopes weren’t TOO high but hey, Donald Glover as a young Lando? Sign my the HELL UP. Admittedly most of my beef with Solo is because I read 1.2 books of A.C. Crispin’s Han Solo trilogy and therefore had a very clear vision of what I consider to be the Han Solo origin story. (Honestly, check them out, they’re GOOD). Therefore I kind of try to pretend that movie didn’t exist for anything except for some sweet Han Solo merch and again Donald Glover as Lando.
Then I’d kind of let my love for the films sleep for a while, admittedly until the Rise of Skywalker trailer dropped and now I’m hopelessly obsessed again... I rewatched The Last Jedi twice last week for the first time since I saw it in the theaters and god it really is just THAT GOOD. This all leads up to why I converted my mostly-dead main blog into a Star Wars blog, both to pay homage to my first and eternal love, but also to control my Star Wars crazy from overrunning my mostly-Marvel-but-technically-multifandom sideblog, @that-is-americas-ass-you-know-it
#star wars#my star wars story#rise of skywalker#the last jedi#luke skywalker#other star wars stuff im too tired to tag rn

The Lion King (2019)
I’m aware that this is very late, so most people have already seen this movie and are completely over it by now. Buttttt, I wanted to review something a little more recent so let’s go!
I don’t really strike myself as an emotional person and in fact I never really cry at movies or TV Shows except Endgame, Everest, Toy Story 3, Inside Out, Stranger Things, Good Luck Charlie (don’t judge me), Titanic I want to say?, that one time I watched Monsters Inc. last week even though I watch that movie at least once a month and you never would have guessed it.. The Lion King. I remember curling up in a ball in the far corner of my living room when Mufasa died, and I believe this is a sign of a great movie. I mentally prepared myself for an emotional breakdown. Andd... Yeah. That never happened.
The lack of expression was almost insulting in this movie. I don’t know why it just felt so… bland?
‘Hakuna Matata’ means ‘no worries’ but Disney better start worrying as I can feel the Oscars and good reviews dropping out of their hands like how Scar dropped Mufasa down the valley. At least they have some sweet dollar to make up for it, but that was practically guaranteed in this Disney-ruled 2019.
Quick-Fire Review for those who can’t be bothered reading lengthy paragraphs:
• I have to take a second to stop, and applaud the EXTRAORDINARY effects on this movie. I have no doubt that this will wind up James Cameron even more than 2019 probably already has, as we all know his turn-on is some Oscar worthy Visual Effects, and The Lion King has probably above those of Titanic & Avatar.
• That first shot of the movie, which was the only shot in the movie that wasn’t digitally created, looked really out of place to me but it was a nice little easter egg.
• The ‘Circle of Life’ was great until Simba came on screen, did his little sneeze and then bOy did I realise how much of a copycat this movie would be. Like, come on! At least change the plot a tad?
• Also 2019 Disney must have a fetish for making CGI Elephants. Dumbo, The epic ‘Prince Ali’ sequence from Aladdin, and then more Elephants in this! I know they had to be there but I just found it quite funny.
• JD McCrary did a good job, but frankly, it was nothing compared to JTT.
• One thing I remember from the original, was how BLOODY SCARY Scar was. Even watching back the original he still really scares me. I expected the ultra-realistic CGI and the great voice performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor to freak me out more than Coraline did when I saw it for the first time, but it didn’t? ‘Be Prepared’ was one of the most disappointing things for me, but that’s mostly because I’m a sucker for a Disney Villain with a solo song.
• Mufasa’s death was sad for a split second.
• To be completely honest, the whole movie felt like an easy way of making another billion-dollar movie for Disney, or a backup incase Aladdin flopped.
• Beyonce is a fantastic singer and performer, but her lines felt kind of forced and with a complete lack of emotion.
• But, putting this all behind me, most of the movie is pretty great! Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner kill it as Timon and Pumbaa, which we all knew they would. A lot of people have more negative things to say about Donald Glover, but I felt his performance was great!
• When Simba’s hair floated hundreds of miles back to Rafiki, that shit could have taken 5 minutes less than it actually did.
Overall, The Lion King is still a leading movie in terms of giving a great message back to the audience, of how you should always protect those around you who are in need!
If you liked this review, please make sure to like, reblog and follow me! Also, leave any requests for movies or tv shows you want to me to watch/review! Hannah x
This is my first ever movie review, so please feel free to give me any tips or feedback! It would be greatly appreciated ❤️

Ben Parker adjusted the collar of his shirt for what felt like the hundredth time, and couldn’t help but fidget uncomfortably underneath all of the blinding and intrusive lights. “Is this alright?” he asked.
The documentary crew twittered about all-around him, but the director smiled at him in a way that made Ben feel, at least, a little more relaxed. “You look great, Ben,” she reassured him. “All you gotta do is answer some questions. No big deal, right?”
The eldest Parker child wiped his sweaty hands on his slacks, “Right.”
An over-zealous PA swiped past the director and practically shouted, “All ready, ma’am.”
The director, an up-and-coming documentarist, smiled patiently at the young PA and shot Ben an apologetic smile. He bubbled out an anxious, flighty laugh. If the director noticed how severely disquieted he was, she didn’t say. Instead, she took a seat just to the left of the camera and the whole set quieted.
The slate clicked. And they were rolling.
“So, Ben,” the director soothing prompted him, “Your father has been compared to Spielberg, Hitchcock, Scorsese, and Welles. He is one of the most decorated directors in Hollywood history. He is turning sixty this year. Why do you think has made him such an enduring icon?”
Ben was no longer the thirty-something man sitting in front of prying lights. He was the little boy tucked under his father’s arm and people were falling over themselves for one glimpse, one quick picture with the Peter Parker. And if his mother was around, the attention was a thousand times worse.
He was that boy. And not the man that had worked to talk about anything and everything but his parents.
He had never taken interviews that pertained to his parents. When he was not even ten, his father had sat him down and told him that the world would always care about their family. They were a curiosity. Famous. As an adult, he still didn’t understand what that word meant. And just because they were well-known did not mean that Ben had any obligation to people’s questions. Their family was their family. People that tried to break it open and have a peak inside weren’t worth a damn.
He had lived his life by those words.
Until HBO decided to make some documentary about his father for his sixtieth birthday.
His father had granted them access to interviews with all of the key players in his career—Aunt Cindy, Uncle Ned, his mother—but his Dad had told HBO outright that his children were not to be interviewed unless they wanted to be.
Artie, who was working toward his tenure at Stanford University, immediately declined.
Will was not so hasty. He was Hollywood-famous adjacent. The shine of twinkle-town didn’t bother him so much. He had never gone to college, much to his parents’ chagrin. When Will turned eighteen, Aunt Cindy had brought him under her wing and he was now working toward his dream of an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. Interviews were not his little brother’s bread and butter, but he could manage just fine.
Little May was the only Parker sibling that did not need time to think about HBO’s offer. She said yes without blinking. At twenty-four, the youngest of the Parker brood was directing her second indie film in the fall. About a young director and actress that fall in love.
Ben had been much harder to convince. He wanted to decline. Two out of four Parker siblings was a pretty good turn-out. And yet, when the young director had showed up on his doorstep, she had smiled at him in a way that made his heart leap a little. And now, he was here.
Filming some interview about his father.
Sigrid must have noticed him floundering in front of the camera, because she hushed the whispering crew. She scooted her chair forward until she was just barely out of the frame of the shot. Ben settled his eyes on her. And she did that thing again. She smiled.
“Ben,” she said slowly, gently, “Why don’t you just tell us about your childhood. Start there.”
He exhaled. “I can do that.”
“I know you can,” Sigrid granted.
With her permission, he began to paint a private picture of his home life. “My Dad moved us just north of Los Angeles proper when I was a kid. We lived in Pasadena. In this cute house that had a backyard so my brother Will could have four dogs. One for each of us, he used to say. But we all knew they were his dogs. He and his husband now have a house in Malibu with seven dogs. One for each day of the week, my Dad says.” Ben dryly laughed.
It was strange, sharing such little things about his family. The details were what people had craved his entire life. And now he was sharing them so willingly. Or, well, somewhat willingly. Ben continued, “And it was quiet. My upbringing. We were at home a lot. Or on set.” Ben smiled in that recklessly boyish manner that his father could, “Being on set was the best. When I was twelve, my Dad directed a spin-off Star Wars film. That was the coolest thing for a kid. We have all of these pictures of the four of us in the cockpit of some X-Wing starfighters.”
Sigrid nodded, “Your mother was in that film.”
“My mother was in every single one of my Dad’s films. Not physically, but she’s there. Her spirit. Her words. His movies were, are completely moved by her. Its funny. I can hear her in his movies so clearly. There is this line in Active Forms where the two main characters are fighting, and Lee Grieg’s character rolls her eyes and stops yelling. She sits down lazily and says, Contrary to what you think, Jack, I’m not obsessed with you. I’m just very observant.”
He could feel his smile splitting his cheeks, “That is so my Mom. You have no idea. All of his movies are like one gigantic love letter to her.”
“Even Star Wars?” Sigrid smirked.
“Especially Star Wars,” Ben laughed. And all of the sudden it was him and Sigrid. They were talking about his family as if no cameras were there to capture the words. “There are, like, very few black people in Star Wars. My Mom used to talk about that with Donald Glover. So when he signed that contract, he turned to my Mom and was like I’m putting you in Star Wars. You want a gun or a lightsaber?”
The director nodded, “She picked lightsaber.”
“It was the coolest thing for a twelve year old. Your mother playing a Jedi warrior.”
“Was it hard, too?”
Ben shook his head, “Not then.” Thoughtfully, he added, “They really protected us as kids. It got harder when we were older. They couldn’t decide where we went or what we did or who we were interacting with. They didn’t want to keep us locked up in the house. At home I was Ben. But out in the world I was, I am Michelle and Peter Jones-Parkers’ kid.”
Ben gnawed on his lip, “It was harder for my Dad to deal with that than my Mom. She is really strong. But my Dad would shield us from the world if he could. I’m a grown man and nothing would make him happier than me being at home, safe and sound. All four of us, really.”
He remembered the first time he had been swarmed by paparazzi on the 405 as a teenager. How scared he had been. How furious he had been with the people trailing him with his little sister in the backseat. And he remembered the way his father had looked when they finally pulled into the driveway, safe but shaken.
Ben continued, “Dad loves his job. He hates being famous.” He could almost picture the trailer for the documentary they were making ending with that line. The perfect soundbite. Not because it was juicy, but because it was true.
Sigrid cleared her throat, “Was he around a lot when you were a kid?”
Ben shrugged, “Yes and no. I mean, when we were little my parents had us on every set they worked. But as I got older, I wanted to stay home with my friends. I picked being home over being there with him. And my mother, too. But they were around a lot. And they called us every night before bed. I was nineteen years old and in college and my father was still calling me for family phone-calls.” Ben ducked his head, “We don’t do the family phone-calls anymore. I had other things to do. It seemed, I dunno, less important as I got older—”
Ben brushed his hair back off of his face. Then, he looked directly into the camera, “Excuse me.” He did not wait for permission. He strode out of the room and locked himself inside the small bathroom just beyond his living room where they were filming. He flipped open his phone and called a familiar number. It rang only twice before his father picked up, “Ben, hi.”
“Dad,” he whispered into the phone.
There was a brief breath of silence on one end of the phone, “Ben, is everything okay?”
He nodded, although his father could not see him, “Dad, I love you.”
He heard his father laugh through the line, “I love you, too, Benny.”
“I just wanted you to know, you and Mom gave us really good lives. And I should call more.”
“Ben—”
“And I don’t even know why I stopped those family phone calls. They were the best. I loved hearing about your day. And Mom has the best laugh.”
“Ben—”
“Why did we ever stop those phone calls?”
“Benjamin.” Ben was commanded silent by his father’s sharp tone. “Why don’t you swing by set tomorrow? We can get lunch.”
Ben smiled, an exact mirror of his father’s own grin, “I’d really like that, Dad.”

Commentary Facts part one
Got my blu ray today. Very excited to listen to the commentary which does not just have Ryan Coogler, it also has Hannah Beachler (production designer) so that’s super bonus.
Some things I’ve learned:
Hannah made a 515-page “Bible” of the world.
The basketball court and apartment complex that N’Jobu and young Killmonger live in is a real location in Atlanta. It is near the Dr. King Memorial. Coogler says when they were filming, Dr. King’s daughter (I assume Bernice King, because I love her) came and gave them all hugs and wished them well. (Me: SOBS UNCONTROLLABLY. They were blessed.) In fact, in the scene where young Killmonger sees the Wakandan plane leave, they had to touch up the background with CGI to remove the King Memorial.
The color that represents colonization in the film is BLUE.
Zuri wears purple in the past and at Warrior Falls. Many of the characters were color coordinated, to help the viewer keep track of them. The purple represents both spirituality and a high rank/royalty.
Ruth Carter had a story with the necklaces. The three men in the apartment all wear gold necklaces because they are all Wakandan royalty, but N’Jobu’s is also based on 2Pac.
I will cut now because this is only going to get longer.
Nakia’s mission was inspired by the kidnappings going on in Nigeria. It’s set in the Sambisa Forest but was shot in Atlanta.
Coogler notes that Bambadjan Bamba plays the leader of the convoy and that he is a DREAMer.
Nakia’s color is green, but the women in the back of the truck are also dressed in green. This is because Nakia sees herself as part of the outside world as well as Wakanda. He also mentions that Nakia knows about the young boy and that if she didn’t have Panther’s back, that boy would be dead.
The shot of “Wakanda” as they return are actually shot mainly South Africa and Lesotho.
Ayo is second-in-command of the Dora Milaje.
Ramonda is hiding her grief. She wants to move forward and be there for her son.
The Museum set was built by Hannah in Atlanta. Everyone in London (especially Killmonger) wears blue and there is a blue tint to the film.
The mask Killmonger steals has a simian face, antelope horns and a lion mane. Because he is an amalgamation of many things.
Zuri’s face paint was inspired by warriors in Papua New Guinea. (Definitely listen to Ruth Carter’s video on the Warrior Falls costumes because Cooger doesn’t have time to call it all out.)
He says the fake out where Shuri raises her hand to challenge was suggested by Donald Glover (Atlanta) aka Childish Gambino, who was also in Spider-man: Homecoming.
Coolger says one inspiration for Winston Duke’s speech as M’Baku was the film Lincoln. He thought political speeches in that were cool. He is challenging T’Challa both physically and politically.
“We wanted to make his character one of dignity,” says Coogler of how he didn’t like M’Baku in the comics. He also says M’Baku is “sexy” but that is “all Winston.” He wears white paint on his back to symbolize the silverback gorilla. The Jabari do not have an elder (possibly due to their hard life?--this is speculation from me); M’Baku is the same age roughly as T’Challa and he speaks for himself.
The composer, Ludwig Göransson, picked up and moved to Senegal when he got the job so he’d be seeped in the music of Africa.
T’Challa wins the fight because he gains worth from his identity. His mother yells to show him who you are. He is T’Chaka’s son, and he believes T’Chaka was a great king. He gains strength from his mother and sister’s support.
T’Challa is merciful and doesn’t enjoy taking people’s lives that is why he spares M’Baku, in addition to the fact that he believes M’Baku is a good leader and that the Jabari need him. Coogler hints that it is T’Challa’s mercy that saves his life in the end. (Spoiler alert!) And, if I may editorialize for a moment, this is a good reminder of T’Challa’s arc in Captain America: Civil War. That he is not consumed by the need for vengeance against Zemo or M’Baku.
The necklace Zuri places on T’Challa (again with the necklaces) is supposed to belong to Bashenga.
Coogler and Beachler refer to the caverns where the heart-shaped herb grows as “The City of the Dead.” I did not realize this was supposed to be the Necropolis. I thought it was the Temple of Bast. For those of you who don’t know, in the comics T’Challa becomes King of the Dead and the Necropolis is his seat. I’ve actually wondered if we might see such a storyline given the ending of Infinity War. (Guys, don’t worry about T’Challa. He’s King of the Dead. An argument could be made that Thanos actually increased T’Challa’s power and reach. If it had been Shuri, I would’ve cried. Oh, who am I kidding, I cried anyway.)
T’Challa is buried in a position many people on the continent (pharaohs, etc) are buried and it is also like the Wakanda Forever salute. And it means “love” in American Sign Language. You guys, there are ASL references in this film. It is for EVERYONE.
Coogler says T’Challa has taken the herb and experienced these visions before but this is the first time he’s done it since his father has been dead, so he’s looking for him.
They had a lot of concepts for what the Spirit World would look like. Some more fantastical than others. They decided to go with the Acacia tree (which is often seen in movies about Africa, like the Lion King). It represents Africa. The color in the background is purple because he is still feeling the effects of the Heart-Shaped Herb.
Here T’Challa’s idea of being a “good king” is being like his father. That remains T’Challa’s goal throughout the film but he must stop being so rooted in the past.
I think I need to take a break now. There is more information than I can write about.

Now before i start on how time and the enemy has this psychologically mind fucked us… lets look at most two player games we play…. like cards, checkers, chess, even the most powerfully hidden messaged game Uno…. all of them have mirror pieces which are the same but in different colors…. the key and always the have more at the end in each one…. except for uno…. why uno tho…. each other game symbolizes war against eachother so until one race is left to rule. In uno theres several pieces that symbolizes the different tribes with the most powerful pieces being the card with all the colors aka tribes with hints of white around them and the main color aka tribe being black with a hint of white around it…. Now is u have too many cards aka tribes together ur technically losing rite??? Hmmmm so the key is to have no cards left…. ever thought that maybe that was a message…. that the more we war with each other… the more we lose while thinking we won…. and the word uno isnt ment to be that u have one card but that it was ment to be one race destroying its self? But fck it i could be over analyzing the shit rite…. Now back to the shit at hand In one set we have dumbo (dumb-bo) dumb/sambo but any how... we have dumbo's crows aka jim crows…. same crows with same style used in several jim crow pictures. In the other is….. Donald Glover’s “This Is America” screen shot…. posing as the (famous) jim crow picture aka the logo! This new video is not only a message of what they been doing, but a message of what we’ve been doing just for them…. they wanted us to dance around like sambo and we did just that…. then they had guns so is was dance, sing and entertain or die…. now we just dance, sing and entertain like sambo or we dont get paid…. hence the choir singing get paid…. we have excepted with they have conditioned us to except. Now when we are no longer entertained what do we do……. we crucify and mentally hang those, drive them out after shaming them and now…. we have become the jury that the colonials used back then for sambo’s who didnt entertain well. Only this time they dont die. They just dont get paid nor are they excepted by society the same. They have made us them…….. look at our behavior…. black folks dont even except their own people if they arent the same shade or ethnic background. Now at the bottom…… we have the black Israelites vs The kkk….. now tho our message is built off frustration and years of oppression, we some how do revert to this…. which is…. The kkk says all black people should vanish from earth… The Israelites say all white people should vanish as well. The kkk says all black people demons, The Israelites say all white people are devils, The kkk says jesus is white, The Israelites say the savior is black….. They even dress up in old war attire and preech in the same style. This is a sign that we mirrored our energy threw what we’ve been threw. No body wants piece till the other is gone. So now what? What do we do? We’ve allowed them to turn us years later into the very same thing we fought against. Now we are too deep in and noticing now means we are awake. And thats why at the end of Donald Glover’s video…. he gets chased. Not just by white folks but by his own kind….. I’ll probably get ultra bashed but who gives a fuck. Its always been LOVE FIRST ✊🏾!
Shit I think about. Smh! Maybe im wrong asf, but i rather be wrong and searching, then oblivious, still and ignorant!

Mike Laws, Columbia Journalism Review, June 16, 2020
At the Columbia Journalism Review, we capitalize Black, and not white, when referring to racial groups. Black is an ethnic designation; white merely describes the skin color of people who can, usually without much difficulty, trace their ethnic origins back to a handful of European countries.
In deciding on a styling, fusspot grammarians and addled copy editors generally fall back on a pair of considerations. The first is broad adherence to a general rule—like, say, the Chicago Manual of Style’s (§8.38) edict that “Names of ethnic and national groups are capitalized.” (Though Chicago still generally mandates lowercasing both black and white, it does include the proviso that the rule can be suspended if “a particular author or publisher prefers otherwise.”) The second thing we look for is attestation. In this case, it’s instructive to turn not to the largely lilywhite mainstream press (nor to the style guides that govern their renderings), but to writers of color and to alternative stylebooks. The Diversity Style Guide (2019), produced by Rachele Kanigel in consultation with some fifty journalists and experts, takes it as a given that Black ought to be capitalized. Sarah Glover, a past president of the National Association of Black Journalists, wrote in a recent piece for the New York Amsterdam News, a historically Black weekly, that “capitalizing the ‘B’ in Black should become standard use to describe people, culture, art and communities.” After all, she pointed out, “We already capitalize Asian, Hispanic, African American and Native American.”
And, as my CJR colleague Alexandria Neason told me recently, “I view the term Black as both a recognition of an ethnic identity in the States that doesn’t rely on hyphenated Americanness (and is more accurate than African American, which suggests recent ties to the continent) and is also transnational and inclusive of our Caribbean [and] Central/South American siblings.” To capitalize Black, in her view, is to acknowledge that slavery “deliberately stripped” people forcibly shipped overseas “of all other ethnic/national ties.” She added, “African American is not wrong, and some prefer it, but if we are going to capitalize Asian and South Asian and Indigenous, for example, groups that include myriad ethnic identities united by shared race and geography and, to some degree, culture, then we also have to capitalize Black.”
If capping the B strikes you as in part a project of reclamation, well, it is. {snip}
Per this understanding, it is a kind of orthographic injustice to lowercase the B: to do so is to perpetuate the iniquity of an institution that uprooted people from the most ethnically diverse place on the planet, systematically obliterating any and all distinctions regarding ethnicity and culture. When people identify with specific terms of the African diaspora, we defer to those; in the absence of the identifiable ethnicities slavery stole from those it subjugated, Black can be a preferred ethnic designation for some descendants. (For a pop-culture consideration of this question, see the “Juneteenth” episode of Atlanta, in which a woke white husband asks Donald Glover’s character what part of “the motherland” he’s from, hazarding a guess that the answer might be “southeastern Bantu.” Glover responds, dryly, “I don’t know. See, this spooky thing called slavery happened and my entire ethnic identity was erased.”)
If capping the B strikes you as in part a project of reclamation, well, it is. As The Diversity Style Guide notes,
There are various historical, social and political reasons why one might prefer to identify as Black. The term has historically connected people of African descent around the world and was revived during the Black Power Movement.… Black and then African American replaced older terms such as Colored and Negro imposed by others. Self-identification might reflect feelings about origin, affiliation, colonialism, enslavement and cultural dispossession.
That argument persuaded CJR to change its style (in defiance of a piece published on our site a few years earlier). Glover, in her article, called on the Associated Press stylebook (“the bible for working journalists”) to update its entry. Given the timing, after the killing of George Floyd and in light of a global reckoning with race relations, I’d be surprised if the AP didn’t take heed, and soon. In the meantime—and in what is surely a sign of evolving American attitudes on the topic—USA Today has announced that it will be adopting the cap-B Black across its network, which includes the flagship paper and “more than 260 local news organizations.” (The man responsible for issuing the editorial fiat, Michael McCarter, was named managing editor of standards, ethics, and inclusion exactly one day before making the call.)
This all makes for a good start, but it will mean nothing if white Americans don’t make an effort to understand the whys and wherefores—which is to say, the history that delivered us to this precise point in time. That, of course, will be a taller order than simply asking them to capitalize one little letter.
Editors Note: This piece has been updated for clarity. An earlier version included an explanation that was off-base. We appreciate the feedback, have revised the language, and will continue to discuss this subject internally.
