[I can't think of his name. Oh, Chef Roberto from Don Antonio's in New York City. We can't make it back all the time to go check out our favorite "Triple-D" joints. So we figured we would just call you up, politely request to package up]

Alejandro Escovedo's Songs, Living and Breathing
Tumblr media
From left to right: Mark Henne, Alejandro Escovedo, James Mastro, Scott Danbom
BY JORDAN MAINZER
He's a true master of reinvention. Don't get me wrong: It's the same Alejandro Escovedo. But he's continuing to find out that there are many right ways to tell his stories, especially when it comes to their musical accompaniment. Escovedo hasn't released a new album of original material since 2018's The Crossing, and that's okay. In 2021, he shared a Spanish-language version of the aforementioned album, La Cruzada, an act whose sociopolitical ramifications speak for themselves, in an era of increasing anti-immigration rhetoric and xenophobia that the very album explores. And earlier this year, inspired by his forebears, Escovedo decided to revisit all eras of his discography.
Including tunes from pre-solo career bands Buick MacKane and The True Believers, Echo Dancing (Yep Roc) is 14 re-recordings of older songs. When Escovedo boarded a plane to Italy to record with Don Antonio (with whom he recorded The Crossing) and Nicola Peruch, he thought he was going to improvise a new record from his lyrical and melodic sketches. Upon hearing other bands' interpretations of his songs--namely Calexico's version of "Wave", originally from 2001's A Man Under the Influence--Escovedo thought, "I, too, can do that." The man who sings on Echo Dancing is, yes, older and wiser, having seen friends and family members come and go, continuing to find truth in stories both personal and fictional. But instead of focusing on his own voice, Escovedo obscures himself behind clouds of haze, electronic effects, sparse drum machines, and distorted guitars, the pain in his voice all the more affecting due to how isolated it sounds. On "Thought I'd Let You Know", a clattering song originally from 2016's Burn Something Beautiful, Escovedo stretches the running time a full three minutes, as if to give himself even more time to reflect alongside buzzing stabs of noise. He repeats, "We're not alone / We are all alone," the effective musings of someone struggling to make sense of the world around them.
At the same time, if songs with more traditional instrumentation sound futuristic on their Echo Dancing version, Escovedo pulls familiar sounds out of those that might have sounded dystopian in the past. The Crossing's "MC Overload", for instance, trades the original's chugging, metallic instrumentation and vocoders for bluesy picking, Gianni Perinelli's soprano saxophone, and Escovedo's deadpan baritone. And Antonio adds gospel-inflected organ to "Swallows of San Juan" and "Last to Know", which somehow sounds at home next to drum machines and dulled bass drums.
Tumblr media
Escovedo's gear
When I saw that Escovedo was touring Echo Dancing, I thought, "Which versions of these songs would he play live?" Would we get the new version of "John Conquest" with syncopated synthesizers, or the Buick Mackane punk burner (technically and hilariously titled "John Conquest You've Got Enough Dandruff on Your Collar to Bread a Veal Cutlet")? Would he play fan favorite "Castanets", a self-described Mott the Hoople-style rock and roll song, or "Castañuelas", the slow, drippy, half-Spanish language dub version with slightly different lyrics? According to his show last Thursday at FitzGerald's, the answer was, "Sometimes, both, other times, something in between the two, and occasionally, neither." During "Sacramento & Polk", Escovedo's venerable backing band--guitarist James Mastro, keyboardist Scott Danbom, drummer Mark Henne--adopted the upbeat punk drive of the original version from 2006's The Boxing Mirror, behind Escovedo's obscured vocals, which were inspired by Echo Dancing's version. On "Bury Me", a prescient tune when it appeared on Escovedo's 1992 debut Gravity, Mastro played the original's twangy slide guitar, while Danbom extracted the pure funk from the new version. Their performance of "Too Many Tears" combined the built-up dirge of Big Station's original with Escovedo's miles-away delivery of Echo Dancing's. And "Everybody Loves Me" retreated to a soulful, back-to-basics ethos, its blues-funk towering above the original's CCR-indebted strut and new version's wonderfully puzzling industrial country.
If the true testament to a song's lasting impact is how it can emotionally resonate over time, ballad "Sensitive Boys" was the highlight of the set. Introducing it, Escovedo paid tribute to his brother Manuel, who passed away weeks ago at 94 years old. Hearing Escovedo repeat, "The world needs you now," despite what we all knew to be true was heartbreaking, yes, but the band filled the room with an undeniable warmth, from Escovedo's deep belting to Mastro's plucky guitars and Danbom's keyboards, out of which he concocted a whole orchestra worth of sounds. It's sometimes hard to remember just how long Escovedo's been around when I think to myself that he hasn't put out anything "original" in a while. Hearing Echo Dancing and seeing him live reminds me that the sort of newness I look out for, even crave, is still limited by the construct of time. With the right shift in perspective and a couple tweaks, a song can be just as living and breathing as I am.

I did three mugs for Salieri’s restaurant and decided to do a mug for The Four Deuces- Al Capone’s bar in Chicago (if you know me, you know I’m absolutely obsessed with the Capone’s. Specifically Frank and Ralph, Al’s older brothers).
You can see I finished 2/3 of the Salieri mugs and decided to add a little “Mr. Salieri sends his regards” inside with a pistol. This is all to practice my pinch pot/hand building. As you can see I’m not the best at making cups that match- which is very upsetting for me. Because of that- I won’t be selling these, but I am willing to trade a mug for an art trade, completely customized to your taste (you just would have to pay shipping- message me if you want to trade).
I made three because I might have a chance to meet two of the actors. One of the fellas live in my city and the other, Glenn Taranto who plays the Don, my Uncle is a very good friend of. I plan to give them each one :]!! As you can tell I’m not keeping them a set because when put together you can tell they are imperfect and that makes me panic.

Don Giovanni, 2024, Wiener Staatsoper. Pictured in three slides are baritone Andrzej Filończyk in two shades of magenta as the title character and bass Antonio di Matteo as the bloodied Commendatore that he tried to kill earlier in the opera. Giovanni invites the Commendatore to dinner and the latter accepts with a firm handshake, but when Giovanni realizes it, he withdraws his hand and screams at it like it had been cursed.

I swear, Black Spy is a prankster...
Since today for me was basically a do-nothing-day, I may as well just present y'all two of my favorite Spy vs. Spy comics from Bob Clarke's era out of sheer boredom because, I dunno, I'm crazy.
Here:
Tumblr media
This is another one of those comics that gives me a feeling Black is quite a bit of a smart-alecky prankster. I LOL'ed at him basically creating the decoy, not to mention that he straight up strips down to his underwear here to pull the prank on (preassumably) White successfully, just like he previously did in one of the paperback comics from the early-70s (particularly in Operation: Safe Conduct, which was later made into an animated skit for MADtv towards the end of the first season about 23 or 24 years later).
Here's the second one from the same era that really splits my sides, which if I had to guess was probably released the same year as the first one, but this one was originally written by Prohias instead of Edwing, many years before Clarke eventually illustrated the actual comic as you see here:
Tumblr media
Of course, Black pulls a prank on White once again, but this time not only exploits White's vanity (kind of) and embarrasses him the second his (White's) underpants are exposed (LOL; gotta love the blush poor White has as he attempts to pull his trousers back up in the second to last panel), but also straight up delivers a painful bash over White's head while his (White's) trousers were still down.
Anyhow, there are images of the original sketches of the second comic that was illustrated by Prohias on the internet, but I have no idea how old the original sketches are. Though I'm thinking about saving that for a different day.
For both comics, I gotta say "nice underpants, you two, LOL!"
I do not claim ownership of any content. Spy vs. Spy belongs to the late Antonio Prohias. Both comics were illustrated by Bob Clarke. The first one was written by the late Duck Edwing. The second comic was written by Antonio Prohias.

Ok, we're all talking about ViolEtte (Viola x Juliette) and Brandina (Brandi x Dina) but can we stop for a second to think how cute the two ships Brandtonio (Brandi x Antonio) and Mirola would be??? (Miranda x Viola)
Brandtonio:
They are both widowed parents.
They both like to cook.
They both are stressed for their kids.
They're both "poor" (well, not Antonio, but I have always imagined that Antonio has argued with his father and therefore does not use the family money)
They're both cute lil babies. They need love. Well, Brandi likes bad boys but she can also feel in love for a italian man who curses while cooking. Antonio can become very fearsome if he fails to cook what he wants to cook or if Romeo touches something in the kitchen.
Imagine how cute a Brandtonio child would be.
Bonus: Antonio Is a good dad, Imagine him taking care of lil unborn baby Broke as his own son 🥺
Imagine the scene: Antonio manages to open a small restaurant after many sacrifices. Job-seeking, Brandi is desperate, Don Lothario tells Brandi that he knows a family of cooks who could hire her. Don goes to meet the Montys on weekends, so he suggests Brandi tò go with him. Brandi asks Antonio if she can work there. The two fall in love after some times working togethet but Brandi is afraid to confess to Antonio that she is pregnant by her late husband, Skip. At a certain point, however, she is forced to admit it and Antonio tells her that it's fine with him and that he can be a father to that child too and Brandi is like 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Mirola:
They both have complicated lives. Viola doesn't have a canon story but you can make up anything, Miranda lives under the constant pressure of her mother who wants her as a perfect heir when Consort doesn't consider her a possible heir at all and Miranda DOES NOT WANT to be part of the Capps. She would like to escape from her family. She wants to be a normal teen, with her hobbes, her wishes. She wants to make her errors, be free, not a doll on a shelf.
I have the headcanon that Viola is a very hyperactive and sociable girl, while Miranda hides her insecurities under a rebellious, annoying, spoiled girl personality. I like to imagine if by meeting Viola she could finally find a shoulder to cry on, first a friend to let off steam with and then slowly begin to discover her bisexuality and discover herself in love with her.
Bonus: drama. Imagine creating a situation where maybe for reason X Miranda believes that Viola might like Tybalt, so out of spite Miranda tries to seduce Mercutio but Mercutio likes Tybalt and Tybalt like Mercutio. Imagine if Viola and Miranda have been secretly friends for a long time (secretly because of the feud) one day Viola disappears and the police accuse Tybalt precisely because someone believed that Viola liked Tybalt. Boom. Drama in the family. Miranda hating Tybalt. CHAOS.

Marbled Monday
Today we bring you two official documents from King Charles III of Spain from 1767—the first was published April 4 and the second on July 5. These documents pertain to the settlement of six thousand Catholic Flemish and German settlers in Sierra Morena. Both are certified by Don Ignacio Esteban de Higareda, advisor to the king. Both documents were printed in the Office of Don Antonio Sanz, official printer of the king and his counsel.
The marbling is one of my favorites that I’ve seen—a fantasy pattern in purple, red, and cream. Something particularly interesting (to me, anyway!) is the evidence of light damage on the marbling, especially on the back of the first book shown here (the third image). You can see that the top of the book has been bleached quite light, while the left side has been bleached slightly less and the right side is still its original color. From this we can tell something about how the book has been stored—there was most likely a smaller book or bookend in front of it near a window or other light source for quite some time, causing the top to bleach while the bottom stayed bright! At some point, an even smaller book blocked just the bottom right side, causing the left side to bleach a bit as well. These are not the original bindings for these documents (our best guess is that these are 20th century bindings) and evidence of light damage can be seen on all sides of the covers shown here.
All of our books here in Special Collections are kept in darkened spaces for the most part—we only turn the lights on when a person is in the stacks and needs to see! This helps prevent light damage like you see here. If you have special books you want to keep looking nice, we recommend keeping them in the dark!
