10 Things People Do That Dogs Can't Stand
Tumblr media
Your dog could hate the things you do, and you may not even realize it. The things that irritate dogs are different from the things that irritate humans. Generally, dogs dislike hugs, not being allowed to sniff, a lack of routine, and more. Even the most laid-back dog will hate some of the things we humans do—if they tolerate it, it's just because they love you or don't want to be dominant. Yes, certain things are unavoidable, like vet visits or grooming. However, there are other ways we can try to take it easy on our dogs. No two dogs are exactly the same, so what one dog hates another dog may enjoy.
Tumblr media
Hugging
It's really cute to look at photos of people hugging dogs, but the reality is not so comfortable. Many dogs do not enjoy hugs, especially from strangers. Placing your arms around a dog's neck or body may be perceived as a threat. Most dogs tolerate gentle hugs from trusted humans, but that doesn't mean they actually like them.
A better alternative is to let the dog cuddle on his own terms and pet him along the back and on the chest (especially if you don't know the dog well). Of course, some dogs do love to be hugged. It's important that you know your own dog and understand his limits. Pay attention to his body language to help you understand how he feels when you hug him. If he leans away, averts his eyes, yawns, licks his lips, has a worried look, or shows other appeasement gestures, he's probably uncomfortable.
Tumblr media
Getting in a Dog's Face and Personal Space
Much like hugging, dogs tend to dislike it when humans get in their faces. Think about how it would make you feel! Avoid putting your hands in a dog's face, towering over dogs, and rushing towards them. This is especially important if the dog does not know you well.
As an owner, if you need to poke and prod your dog for his own good (like ear cleaning or tooth brushing) go slowly, be gentle, and reward your dog with treats and/or praise. If your dog exhibits appeasement gestures, shows signs of fear, or acts aggressive, back off! It's always best to be careful and prevent a dog bite.
Tumblr media
Not Letting a Dog Sniff and Explore on Walks
Dogs enjoy going on walks for more than just the exercise. Taking a walk outdoors gives your dog a chance to explore the world. Your dog explores the world primarily through scent, then with his other senses (whereas most humans explore the world first through sight). Rushing your dog through a walk without allowing him to stop and sniff (and mark) is unkind.
If you think about it, it's like someone dragging you by the arm through your favorite shop without allowing you to stop and look at anything. If it happens all the time, that would be pretty frustrating, wouldn't it? So next time you walk your dog, give him plenty of time to explore his environment.
Tumblr media
Lack of Routine and Rules
Your dog may not seem like it, but he needs rules. If your dog is acting out, it's probably because you have not taught him the rules. Training is an important part of providing structure in your dog's life. A routine is important because your dog has an internal clock. Try to feed your dog at the same time each day. Establish an exercise routine too if possible.
After a few days of structured rules and routine, you will probably notice that your dog is happier. Routines and rules make your dog's world more predictable and can actually boost his confidence.
Tumblr media
Yelling and Harsh Punishment
No one likes to be yelled at or harshly punished (such as being spanked). Dogs may not understand the words we are saying, but they sense your emotions when you do it. If you have a sensitive or fearful dog, you may find that yelling, and harsh punishment actually upsets or scares your dog. Fear does not equal respect, and you will not strengthen your relationship with these methods.
Even if your dog is aloof or ultra-happy, you will probably find that yelling and harsh punishment don't help in the long run because your dog becomes desensitized (meaning he does what he wants anyway and you just keep repeating yourself).
Positive reinforcement is generally the most effective type of training.
Tumblr media
Dressing Them Up
Unless you got your dog used to wearing clothing gradually (or as a puppy), there's a good chance your dog hates being dressed up. Many dogs will tolerate outfits or costumes, but most don't enjoy them. Get to know your dog before you force him into a bunny costume!
Some dogs are fine with simple clothing items like shirts but loathe wearing things on their heads or feet. How important is it that you dress up your dog anyway? If your dog needs protection from the cold, start with small, lightweight items and associate them with treats or other rewards. Work your way up to sweaters, jackets, and booties. Watch your dog's body language to determine when he has had enough.
Tumblr media
Strong Fragrances
In case you didn't already know it, your dog's sense of smell is about 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than yours. In general, dogs enjoy taking in all types of scents and odors. However, strong fragrances and chemicals can bother dogs and even irritate their noses.
As a rule, it's best to avoid directly spraying your dog with anything. If your dog needs a medical spray applied, avoid his face (better yet, spray the medication on a cloth and apply it to him that way). When you use your own products (perfume, hairspray, air fresheners, cleaners, etc.), do so away from your dog and make sure the product is not toxic.
Tumblr media
Being Left Alone or Ignored
Dogs are social creatures who generally hate being left alone. Some dogs are comforted by the presence of another dog, but others only want human companionship. In extreme cases, some dogs actually fear being left alone and experience separation anxiety.
The problem is that most dog owners have to work in order to pay for all that gourmet dog food. You also need to have a life, run errands, take vacations, etc. Of course, your dog doesn't understand all that. So, what's the solution?
Spend as much time as possible with your dog when you are home. Take the time to bond with your dog. Set a daily routine, providing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. If you travel frequently, find a trusted pet sitter with whom your dog is comfortable. If you travel constantly, consider whether or not it's fair to even have a dog (or any pet for that matter).
Tumblr media
Forcing Them Into Uncomfortable Situations
Most of us have experienced it: your dog "puts on the brakes" and refuses to go somewhere or do something. Maybe it's the bathtub. Often it's the veterinarian. Sometimes it's the car or even a certain street. It might even be a certain person or animal your dog wants to avoid. Most of the time, your dog is refusing because he has a fear or phobia.
When you force your dog into a scary situation, you are keeping him in a state of stress. It's actually a technique called flooding that does not always work (and can cause more harm than good). A better method is to ease your dog into the situation. Keep him at a safe distance and reward him for staying calm. Gradually increase the dog's exposure to the "trigger" and reward for non-reaction. If it's the vet he fears, you can take steps to get your dog to love the vet. If the phobia is serious, you may need to get help from a trainer or behaviorist.
Tumblr media
Being Upset
Life has its ups and downs. You can't expect to be happy all the time. However, your dog can sense your emotions because of the close bond you share.5 If you are going through a period of depression, stress, or grief, it is bound to affect your dog. Some dogs will match your emotions, becoming sad or even sick. Others will get bored or frustrated and "act out" because they are not getting enough attention/exercise/stimulation.
Do your best to keep with some sort of routine and spend time with your dog. Dogs can offer wonderful emotion support. There's a reason dogs are so great in animal-assisted therapy! Go for a walk with your dog, and you might even find yourself feeling better.

Keep seeing that post where OP starts like 'Thinking about...grieving the undead' and then adds on about like. Real life situations where people have not died but have left your life and you would have reason to grieve them.
All respect, that's an important concept, but that is not what I am thinking about when I read 'grieving the undead'.

if you’re ever in the position to choose between giving up and accepting defeat, and actually trying to fight the ancient unkillable god that is about to peel apart reality like a string cheese, remember this: scientifically speaking, you might as well give it a shot!
1.there were trees at the beginning of the world! there were trees so long ago that they predate bacteria that causes wood to decay. when a tree fell, it would lie there in stasis and there wasn’t any way of breaking down wood xylem on a molecular level in that way.
2. it seems obvious to say, but wood eating bacteria are literally incapable of comprehending what they’re breaking down. It’s just not information conciously available to a microorganism. they don’t know what they’re deconstructing, where it came from, bacteria have no way to even fathom the existence of a tree as a concept.
3. Regardless of the facts above, the world we live in today is a world where wood inevitably decomposes
it is worth fighting the unkillable god no matter how pointless it seems. it is worth taking the risk even though youre trying to accomplish something impossible. the reality in which you live was also once reality in which trees didn’t rot. You live in a reality that allows for existence before the possibility of destruction. you live in a reality where uncomprehending microbes break down matter that is so far beyond the scope of their comprehension that it feels comical to specify something so obvious. you live in a reality that occasionally allows unshakeable physical truths to be altered with no warning.
It is worth fighting the unkillable god because trees are so old they predate the source of their destruction, and it still did not spare them. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because bacteria rots unthinkingly, because there is room in our cosmos for destruction without comprehension on the part of the destroyer. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because now and then reality retracts the promise of immortality without fanfare, and when that happens there is no mercy for the ancient. the unmaking is not softer for the desecrators ignorance. for all things, existence is endless until the exact point where it ends.
so you might as well try to kill the unkillable god. it doesn’t seem likely, but at the beginning of the world, trees didn’t rot. so you never know! you never know

so when straight people ask me why I say I’m “queer” or “gay” instead of sharing my actual identity as a panromantic demisexual non-binary sapphic queer I just tell them “ok look, when you’re talking to someone who isn’t local and they ask you where you’re from and you either say the name of the largest city nearby or ‘town name, suburb of large nearby city’ so they can get some geographical context of where you’re located right, bc they’re probably not going to know the name of the little town you actually live in.”
but if you’re talking to a local you can say the name of your actual town bc they have a greater chance of knowing where/what that is.
ok well when I’m talking to a straight person I start with queer bc chances are they aren’t as familiar with the context of all the little towns in that big queer city and need gps (gay positioning system) to find me.
if I’m talking to another queer person and I say I live in a suburb of gay city in a town called panromantic on the demisexual side of the tracks which is in the county of queer and I live off the intersection of non-binary and sapphic, they’d probably be able to find me with little to no problems, make sense?

batfam meets the JL but it’s just the bat kids breaking into the watch tower during a debriefing or meeting to ask bruce the most mundane questions. they go about it like they’re interns that need to speak to the CEO during a board meeting. they walk over waving their hands and mouthing “i’m so sorry just need to ask batman something 😬” and then they lean over to bruce and ask something like “alfred wants to know if you’re gonna be home for dinner” and then they dip.
one of them started this when bruce didn’t answer their texts (it was probably tim or something) and now everyone does it.

5 Signs Your Dog Doesn’t Like You
Tumblr media
Dogs are supposed to be our best friends, but do you have a dog who doesn’t like you? This breakdown in the relationship between dog and owner can be stressful for all. How do you know if your dog doesn’t like you? Your dog’s body language is a clear indicator of how your dog is feeling about you in the moment.
5 signs your dog doesn’t like you
1. Stiff body language. Dogs use their bodies to communicate with each other and people. One of the first signs that your dog doesn’t like you or is uncomfortable being near you is stiff or uncomfortable body language. This includes whale eyes — the whites of their eyes are visible — when you approach, tucked-in tails or cowering and moving away from you.
2. Avoids contact with you. If your dog avoids spending time near you, including playtime, your dog might not like you. Note: Dogs do have personal preferences for how they show attention and not all dogs are cuddly. That doesn’t mean they don’t like their people; they might just prefer to play or do something more active than lounging around.
3. Reluctant or refuses to take treats from your hands. If your dog is uncomfortable taking food or treats from your hand, that’s a clear sign that your dog isn’t comfortable being near you.
4. Growling, snapping or biting you. This is the clearest way your dog can communicate that he doesn’t like you, or he doesn’t like the specific ways that you are interacting with him at that moment.
5. Showing stress signs. Stress signs include yawning (when not tired) and lip licking and panting (when they aren’t hot). Your dog may be telling you he’s nervous or uncomfortable being near you or with how you are interacting with him.
Tumblr media
Why does my dog not like me?
There are a variety of reasons your dog might not like you or not like the way you are interacting with him. These include:
You aren’t meeting your dog’s needs
Someone mistreated your dog in the past, which can result in dogs struggling to form relationships and connections with people.
Some dogs are wary of new people, so if your dog has only recently come home, it’s possible he just isn’t used to you yet.
Dogs thrive on routine and predictable behavior. If you behave unpredictably around your dog, he may struggle to trust and connect with you.
Dogs particularly struggle when owners don’t respect their personal space, forcing them into interactions like hugging and cuddling when they aren’t comfortable.
Improving your relationship with your dog
It’s possible to change how your dog feels about you. Just like any other relationship in your life, building a strong relationship with your dog takes work. Start by respecting your dog’s space and not forcing interactions. This will make your dog feel safe and trust that you won’t do things that harm or upset him. Prioritize spending quality time with your dog, doing things that your dog enjoys. If you think your dog doesn’t like you, don’t take it personally. Instead, recognize that this is a new opportunity for you to find other ways to connect with your dog.
If you’re struggling with your relationship with your dog, work with a dog trainer in your area who utilizes positive reinforcement and relationship-building approaches. A trainer will assess your dog’s interactions with you and help improve the ways you and your dog communicate and interact with each other. Training is an excellent way to not only increase positive communication between you and your dog but also to make your dog like you more.
