as luck would have it i already had smth like this written so i’m gonna just post that thang… this is part one of a story that i am currently like halfway-ish through atm (i made an OUTLINE…) and who knows if i ever finish it but i am certainly having fun writing a lil melodrama… i am who i am what can i say

August 3, 2020:

“What is it? My arm, there isn't nerve damage, is there? I thought the scans were good.” Marc shifts, a nervous hand cupping his elbow. He’s keeping utterly still– breathing through pain, trying to keep his head on straight.

Dr. Xavier Mir, uncharacteristically hesitant and containing an odd energy in his posture, peers at Marc. He has a clipboard in his hand, and he keeps glancing at it.

“Marc, you are– you are a carrier, yes? Honda had you tested, I can see it marked in your medical file.”

“Yes,” Marc says slowly, and Mir nods, flipping over the pages in his hand. He shifts on his feet, and a bolt of fear shoots through Marc’s stomach like a rabbit. They told him there was no nerve damage. Opening a glass sliding door cannot be the thing that gives him nerve damage.

Mir keeps going.

“Well, Marc,” He makes an odd, placating sound. “I checked the blood sample that we collected from you for your pre-operative labs, and then I had them run it again to be sure, and it seems that the sample we took from you indicates that you are, well, about four months along.”

Marc blinks.

That isn't what he expected.

“What do you mean?” He asks, slow and loud.

Dr. Mir clicks his pen, Marc guesses he doesn’t deliver this kind of news too often, which explains the tone. “I mean that you are almost certainly pregnant, by the look of things.”

“I—“ Marc gapes. He tries to make his mind work, arm burning. He’s not— he’s here for emergency surgery. Dr. Mir is already dressed in the awful, washed-out toothpaste color of his scrubs. He’s about to usher Marc into pre-op. This is about his arm, all of this should be about his arm.

“Four months? That’s not possible, they would have tested me before my last surgery, it was negative. The doctors at Honda told me, they told me that it wasn’t something I would have to worry about, that I don't have enough body fat.”

Mir nods. The ringing sound fades a bit from Marc’s ears.

“False negatives are rare, but I’m afraid to say that they’re not impossible. And if you can get pregnant, there is always a possibility for conception when having penetrative sex. Have you been experiencing any symptoms? Nausea, weight gain, fatigue—“ Mir peers at him sideways, talking briskly. The shadow of anxious feet move outside the door, Álex and Jose must be pacing. “Strong emotional responses?”

Marc stares at him. Strong emotional responses. The arm that he uses to ride motorcycles is broken. This is his second surgery on it in the space of three weeks. The plate snapped this morning, three hours ago. Brno is in six days, and he will miss it, 25 points down the drain.

“No, yeah— eh. I mean, yes.” He makes himself say.

He puts his good hand to his stomach.

Four months ago. Pre-season testing in Qatar. They hadn’t used a condom, and then the world had shut down and he’d been stuck without his motorcycle until July, the longest he’s ever gone without riding competitively since he was 12 and still in school. Lately, he’s had other stuff on his mind. He’s been rehabbing his shoulder, he’s been training for the season, he’s been doing— he’s been doing motocross.

The truth is, he hasn’t noticed anything. The last few weeks, when he supposes it should have been becoming more and more obvious (four months along obvious, Jesus Christ) he’d been focused on noticing his arm, mainly, and the bike, as well— both more delicate things than he’d anticipated, and there had certainly been some strong emotional responses.

But this is.

With Vale in March, he honestly didn’t even think it was possible with the sort of life he led, and when he was 20 and his doctors all told him he didn’t have to worry about it, he’d just assumed that was the end of it. That will probably be a funny story in about ten years.

It’s not, in the moment. In the moment it just feels mystifying, terrifying— like waking up and finding out the sky had turned purple overnight, only with an additionally fucked-up impact on his life and more importantly, on his career. He bites hard at his bottom lip. A baby.

He remembers— Vale’s hands on the small of his back, hot as a brand. Vale’s hands lower. The question, knifed out between strained breaths as he thumbed slickly at where Marc was hot and wanting: Do you have one? and then Marc gripping him tighter, swallowing around the words. No, he’d wanted to say, so he had. You should just, it’s okay, and then Vale was there.

“Fuck.” He says now, with feeling. This is crazy.

His eyes dart around the sterile white of the room. When he’d come in, he’d caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror above the sterile little sink, and hated the way he looked. Washed out and pale, small in the bundle of his jacket, his useless arm hanging out of its sleeve, but cradled close. His eyes were drawn with pain above the material of his mask, and his shoulders were postured unevenly, warped protectively over his shoddily healed fracture. He’d thought that he looked old. He turns over the feeling. Old enough?

A baby. An actual baby.

Marc is a practical man, when he wants to be. He runs down the list.

The season is still young, and he wants to be back to win—but it’s shortened because of Covid, and with him already missing two races, he realizes, with a sinking feeling in his chest, that a ninth championship at the age of 27 is looking less and less likely.

Which means that he has an actual choice here, not just the illusion of one. The doctor, having given him a thin breath of a moment, picks up on his line of thought.

“You do have— options, Marc. We have you at around four months along.” He sighs. “The injury, if all is normal after surgery, should heal in six to eight weeks, but this is not a normal injury, it has been retraumatized, and you’ve put a lot of stress on the bone,”

You let me do that, Marc thinks but doesn’t say. It's unfair to say it out loud, he’s the one who decided to ride.

“Now, if you want, there are precautions we can take for the baby, or we can see about going another route with that. We need to decide soon, though, because I want to get you into surgery as soon as possible, and I’m sure you’re in a lot of pain.”

Marc ignores his comment about pain— pain usually goes away, eventually, and he’s good at ignoring it. In a few minutes, once he doesn’t need to think clearly, he’ll ask for painkillers that are safe. Six to eight weeks. He would be back by— god, Misano. There goes his season.

“Another route?” He croaks out.

“You are past the 14 week cutoff for an abortion in Spain, but there are a few other countries where it is less of a problem— Sweden, the Netherlands. I’m sure that I can get you in contact with some people that are, ah, discreet, once we get you through today’s procedure.”

Fabio Quartararo already has 50 points more than Marc. He considers the neat zero next to his name in the standings. What’s worse— P10 in the championship or nothing at all. What’s worse— sitting out, or, or a child.

“My arm, six to eight weeks, you said,” He confirms, and the doctor nods.

“If everything goes well.”

Including the initial break, he will have been out around eleven weeks in total by the end of the healing, but the doctors will usually give him what he wants if he looks like he can stand the pain. If he tries to come back in four weeks, instead of six— no, even then the next grand prix would be in September. It’s still half the season, no way around that, and no one can DNF for half the season and still win a title, not even him.

The baby would be six months along by September, and here by November. That would give him the full offseason to heal. A nauseous, unsteady little thrill runs up his spine.

He could be the first rider to win after giving birth.

He takes a shuddering breath. He finds, even still, that he suddenly wants to cry very badly. He doesn’t.

“But, um, this surgery— the baby will be fine?”

Mir tilts his head, like that’s not what he expected Marc to say. “There are always risks this early into pregnancy with surgery, especially after the amount of stress your body has undergone these last few weeks, but it’s not unusual. There are ways to mitigate that risk as you heal, as well.”

His brain keeps catching— back on the bike in six weeks.

If he does this, he won��t be able to ride until next season, which is undoubtedly the worst and scariest part of the whole thing. He doesn’t do well with boredom, or with waiting, and he can already feel the need bunching under his skin, that gut-wrenching want to get from wherever he is to his bike as fast as possible. Whatever can get him to the top step, he’ll do it, he’ll do it fast, and if it means pain, then well, he can bear it.

But the thing that makes him pause is, if he doesn’t do this, he might never get another chance.

And the idea of that, of losing that, is also scary— scarier than he thought it would be. There’s a part of him that thought he wouldn’t get to do this at all, and it’s reaching towards the realization of the idea with a greedy sort of hunger he hardly seems aware of. If he followed his initial plan, he wouldn’t have a family for probably another ten years, once he retired. And that is only if he finds someone to do it with. He never thought he’d get to do it now, so soon, and with— he finds that he likes the idea.

Especially not with someone that he— he makes himself stop, and a pang shoots through his stomach.

That’s a stupid, childish thought. Vale’s made himself clear, best to nip that part of the fantasy in the bud.

He reviews. 6 months off of his bike.

He reviews. 50 points already. A baby. Blue eyes and curly hair.

“Marc, I know this is sudden, and it is hard to think clearly.” No it’s not, Marc thinks, a little distantly.

“—But I also know you’re in pain, and we do need to get you into surgery, so I need to know what you want us to do.”

He looks up at Dr. Mir. He swallows. He’s never been one to avoid what scares him.

He goes with his gut.

“I’m keeping it.” He says with conviction.

And twenty minutes later they put him under to fix the plate in his arm.

random merlin episodes I wish we had:

a stuck in the same day over and over episode — where someone, obviously merlin, is somehow magically stuck living the same day again and again but only he knows that. we missed so many opportunities. so many magic reveals and so many different reactions to it, specially from arthur and perhaps the knights too.

a halloween special — with a much darker and scarier mood, with less comic relief and more horror. we have a few dark scenes along the show, a whole episode of it would be so cool

a merlin x doctor who crossover — I have this inside joke with a friend that the diamair (that alien looking creature that helps gwaine in the first two episodes of season five) was BBC's way of pushing doctor who into the show, and it would be so nice if it was true. it didn't even have to be a merlin episode, it could be a doctor who episode where the doctor and the companion (I don't remember exactly which ones would be, I guess the 11th?) get back to save the diamair and they help them find a better place to live. and then we see the doctor hiding away from gwaine and percy, and then merlin and arthur and morgana (and all the guards and all) until they can finally talk to the diamair alone. and along the episode we see the characters going as the episodes in merlin canonically did, but in the doctor's pov.

a breaking the fourth wall episode — fleabag style. maybe merlin is the only one who can break the fourth wall, but I like to imagine everyone can, but no one else knows that's a thing everyone could do it. I don't know how this would be explained in cannon, but it would be fun

a green knight episode — where we follow (merlin follows) gwaine in a cheaper version of the tale of the green knight where the writers would obviously time compress a whole year into a few days, give cheap and lazy explanations and the green knight would probably be some random morgana's ally but I would love it anyway

a knights episode — actually I would have loved a spinoff of the knights with two seasons minimum, but at least one whole episode following their pov would be so much fun. maybe something happens and now we watch each of them along their day in flashbacks or something like that, until said thing happens and they have to collect all the puzzle pieces and try to understand what is going on and what happened and why and how to solve it. bonus points if merlin solves it all off screen and they all think that they did it, so now they are all proud of themselves. merlin obviously lets them take the credit for it, but this time he doesn't feel bad about not getting the credit he's due for saving the day once again. he feels happy to see his friends all happy and proud.

an animated episode — I am a huge lover of animation and just thinking about all the characters in an animated style version of themselves makes my heart warm. I love it so much, it would have been soooooo fun and so cute. it could have been an special, didn't even have to be an actual episode. like a christmas special maybe? I don't celebrate christmas so I don't know what would happen, just that it would be animated.

one or some of the characters turn into children — I think it would so fun and so cute to have merlin, gwen, gaius and maybe leon taking care of baby/child arthur. bonus points if uther is still alive and they have to hide baby arthur from him. or worse, all the knights turn into different aged children, leon is a teenager, gwaine has around 11/12, elyan has 7 and percival has 2, and merlin is going insane trying to keep up with them at the same time he tries to solve this mess as soon as possible. I would love the absolute chaos.

a merlin's birthday episode — nothing bad happens, we just get to watch everyone doing their best to come up with a good gift for merlin. and he is so confused as to why everyone is acting so strange around him (but they think they're being stealth and doing a good job). in the end they get the date all wrong and merlin's birthday is like, in six months or something.

that's all I can think of right now, and I know most of them (maybe all of them) don't even make much sense and wouldn't be possible to make in canon, but hey I can dream.

10 YEARS OF MISSY!!

Missy was first seen on screen on the 23rd of August, 2014, in Season 8 episode 1, Deep Breath.

Since her fan-theory provoking debut as 'Guardian of the Nethersphere' in 2014, Missy has has 12 on screen appearances, her most recent being in 2017.

However, her 'reign of mischief and terror' didn't end there. Missy found herself in 2 novels and 16 short stories, including 6 which were compiled in her very own book, The Missy Chronicles (2018). She has also made appearances in 6 comics between 2015 and 2021 and 20 audio adventures, including her series, Missy, of 4 box-set collections released between 2019 and 2024.

in 10 years, Missy has certainly made a huge impact on Doctor Who and the fandom, and will continue to do so in the teased Dark Gallifrey audio adventures from Big Finish which may be released within the next few years.

I love so many things because they're the first- in general, too, but right now I'm thinking of Doctor Who.

I love Rose Tyler because she was not only the first companion but really the first character I saw in Doctor Who. It all started with her. I didn't even know they changed companions like that- for me it was her and the doctor - it was their show.

And of course I love nine because he was the first. I knew about regeneration but I thought I would never really see anyone else as the doctor. I was wrong of course, and poor nine with only one season was left behind and I don't know who my favourite doctor is but 2016 me would kill me when I say it's not him. But he was the first, and that makes him so special.

But there's so many firsts. I love Dalek because it was the first story that had me really worried, the first story that had me crying. I love Bad Wolf / Parting Of The Ways because it was the first time shit really hit the fan and the world was properly in danger and there were so many daleks and it seemed like there was no way to fix it, no way out.

We had daleks after that of course, but you defeat a dalek army once- the second time it's not gonna be as scary. It's never gonna be as scary as the first time you saw an actual dalek army.

And then you have the first regeneration and the first time I had to get used to a new guy playing the doctor. And I did, and three seasons later I realised it's gonna be even harder to say goodbye to this one because I ended up loving ten more than nine and I felt like a traitor.

They can't all be first but 11 is the first I accepted as the doctor within their first episode. If that counts for something.

I didn't get used to 12 so easily but he was my first "current" doctor. I caught up just before season 10. And now there's all kinds of firsts again because I'm so, so fond of season 10 because it was the first one I had to wait for, the first time I watched episodes weekly, as they dropped. Bill was the first companion I met at the same time as everyone else. And I can't even begin to describe my feelings about World Enough And Time. It was the first time I logged onto tumblr because Something Just Happened and had the collectively losing our minds over the latest episode experience. And 12 was the first doctor I had to say goodbye to in real time. The first time I waited for a regeneration episode both dreading it and barely containing my excitement. It was the first time I saw a regeneration scene that wasn't already part of fandom history. I don't know how to put it. It's not the saddest (for me) but it is the one that feels… the realest. Like it's not only a part of this tv show I love but an actual event, intrinsically connected with a certain time in my life.

And 13 is the first I saw announced, of course. The first doctor who was new for everyone. The first doctor where I had to try to guess what they're gonna be like from trailers and promo pics and stuff. The first doctor whose run I saw, from beginning to end, as it aired. And I don't love her seasons all that much, I don't like a lot of things about them, and I had a hard time accepting her as the doctor but there's still this sense of nostalgia about her because look at her. That's the first doctor I saw announced in real time. After the announcement I sat myself on the floor and drew her in that black hoodie we first saw her in, with the previous (9-12) doctors in some sort of bubbles behind her, and I still have that drawing on my door. And I only have one funko pop of the doctor, and it's her. I kept seeing it in stores and i was mad it was the only one they had- only the current doctor. But then they announced her leaving and I caved. And bought it just before The Power Of The Doctor as a sort of goodbye.

And now we have fifteen, and I'm amazed to say that he's a first too, in a way. Because (and i said this before) I didn't have my "oh yeah this is the doctor" light switch moment with 13, i just kinda got used to her. But I did with 15, in Boom. So now he's the first new-for-everyone doctor that i saw in a specific episode and went "Yeah. There it is. That's the doctor. I see it."

And that's just talking about New Who.

Cause then there's the first classic doctor I saw (In a story? 4. In a full season/ their whole era? 3) and the first companion which must be Sarah Jane because of New Who, and because the first classic story I saw was with her and 4. In a way it's also Liz, cause when I started watching classic who for real, I started with season 7, so Liz and 3. But Sarah... It's the same as with Rose. She was the very first.

Now that i think about it. I saw The Sarah Jane Adventures way before i watched any classic who.

Of course i love her so much.

And speaking of spinoffs and extended universe,

I love The Night Of The Doctor because it's the first time I ever saw 8, and I liked him instantly. Instantly. And then I saw the movie, and listened to his big finish stories (the first time I listened to big finish). I have such a soft spot for 8. I read my first doctor who comic because of him (A Matter Of Life And Death). I read it online, back then. Now I have it in my library, along with 30+ other dw comics. And books too. And don't get me Started on the books. I saw In The Blood in a bookstore in 2017. It was the first time I saw a doctor who book. I looked it over, and I read the first couple pages, and it sounded nice so I decided to buy it, but not then, cause I didn't have the money. And I passed that bookstore many times, and every time I looked longingly at that book, and one day I did have the money and looked for it and it was gone. Years later when I was visiting London for the first time, I found it at the who shop, and I did buy it then. I had read other dw books by then, so while it's not the first one I read (that was The Stone Rose) it is, I think, the one I hold dearest. And when I did finally read it, I really liked it, too. So it was worth the wait.

I dunno. It's taken me an hour and a half to write all this but I was sitting in my bed thinking how much of an impact being the first [something] could have. And how many firsts I can find only in my experience with Doctor Who. I had to write it down. It felt important.

Hopefully I can fall asleep now.

Summary: Amber is quarantining in her hotel room after testing positive for covid and suffers from the symptoms. Her family tries calling her, but she doesn’t answer, they reluctantly let Andrew DeLuca check on her when their out of options.

Jackson Avery has his phone to his ear tapping his fingers impatiently on the kitchen counter of the attendings lounge waiting for the person he’s calling to pick up. It’s been three days since his best friend and roommate, Amber Karev, tested positive for covid and has been quarantining in a hotel room provided by him.

He, Alex and Jo have made a schedule where they each call Amber and make sure she’s okay. At first, she was asymptomatic but over the past 24 hours she has had headaches, fatigue, coughing and loss of taste. Her increasing symptoms have worried her family who pushed for twice daily nurses’ visits despite Amber insisting she is fine and has no shortness of breath. Alex knows that Amber acts tough to hide her pain which makes Jackson worry about her more.

He hears her voicemail for the eighth time causing him to mutter under his breath, “Fuck.”

He turns to face Alex and Jo who are in the lounge as well on their lunch breaks looking anxious and worried as well. The three of them have tried calling Amber over the past seven hours but she hasn’t answered their collective 25 calls. The one thing all three of them share in common is their love for their sister figure Amber and the stress that has come over the past three days.

“Should we call the paramedics?” Jo asks in worry for the only sibling she has ever had.

Alex inhales rubbing his tired eyes, “Let’s send a nurse to check on her and report back, she could be sleeping. Covid patients are out like a light throughout the day and her last nurses visit said her lungs were clear.”

“That’s the thing with these patients, their fine one minute and then they tank the next.” Jackson reminds him sharply, “Instead of sending her antibiotics we should have given her supplemental oxygen and taken her in for a scan.”

“Okay, okay.” Alex tries to soothe Avery’s worries sharing them as well, “Let’s send a nurse first and if Amber doesn’t answer then the paramedics barge in and take her here.”

“Your gonna have to come up with another plan.” Webber tells them with regret as he exits the bathroom in his uniform, “All of our nurses are busy with visits the whole day, the next available one is tonight.”

The three of them groan at that before Jo makes a suggestion, “What about 19? Jackson can you call Vic and see if she can visit Amber?”

“I would but their firefighter’s god knows what their schedule is like, and I don’t know if Vic would do this for me a month after she dumped me.” Jackson inhales in agony, “I would check on her, but I have a daughter and I don’t want to risk exposing her.”

“I have a full day.” Alex says with regret.

“Me too.” Jo adds with a frown.

Webber steps in knowing the pain their feeling and wanting to mend it, “I know someone who’s off today, he’s a surgeon, he’s worked on plenty of covid patients, and he would drop everything to make sure Amber is okay.”

Jackson groans knowing who his stepfather is talking about, “No! Anybody but Andrew DeLuca.”

“He saved my life.” Webber reminds Jackson, “He’s a damn good doctor, he’s stable and he loves Amber.”

“Yeah, he loves her so much he broke up with her and kicked her out after he told her she was like her abusive parents.” Jackson sarcastically points out.

Alex nods, “I’m grateful he saved your life but when it comes to my sister he can go to hell before he goes to her hotel room.”

“Look I know what he said to her was awful, but I was there at the intervention, and I saw the pain in his eyes when he admitted there was something wrong.” Richard retells to the angry men, “His priorities have evolved, he knows when to set limits and he knows to appreciate the people he loves more than ever and make up for his mistakes his illness caused. I wouldn’t make this suggestion if I didn’t believe he would move heaven and earth to make sure Amber makes it through this virus and comes back to you all alive and healthy.”

Jackson and Alex are still on the fence as they were both witnesses to Amber’s sorrow following her breakup with Andrew. Alex hugged her close to him as she cried when Andrew had a public breakdown in the lobby. Jackson opened his door to her when DeLuca viciously kicked her out during the blizzard.

Jackson thinks of Amber as his little sister and along with Alex hated seeing her growing depression over the past few months. They both know seeing Andrew again is gonna make Amber feel worse than she already does and are vehemently against Richard’s idea.

Jo however knows what it’s like to have your mental illness push the people you love away and refusing to acknowledge there’s something wrong. She knows the guilt she felt after she threatened to leave Alex and wanting to make up for it as best as she could. She’s known DeLuca longer than Amber and knows that he’s a good guy who will go above and beyond to help people especially the ones he loves.

“I say we do it.” Jo says in agreement causing Alex and Jackson to look at her in shock.

“What?” Both men ask equally annoyed.

“I’ve been where he’s at and I know the guilt he feels will drive him into checking on her and making sure she’s okay. DeLuca will cross his t’s and dot his i’s like he does with all of his patients. We can’t afford to be petty especially when it comes to Amber’s health.”

The boys are slightly calmer but still apprehensive of DeLuca visiting Amber so Jo tries again, “Hey think of it this way, maybe seeing her bastard ex will make her wake up with renewed energy that she’ll use to kill him. It’s a win-win.”

Jackson and Alex’s eyes brighten at that scenario looking at each other before nodding in agreement. Jackson turns to Webber.

“Call him and tell him she’s at the Royalton, room 1401.”

Later

Andrew walks down the hotel hallway wearing PPE carrying medical equipment in a rolling suitcase behind him. When he found out Amber was positive for covid 19 he felt scared for her life despite seeing firsthand people her age are more likely to walk away from this thing. He knows she’s healthy and in prime shape and takes necessary vitamins and fruits daily to boost her immune system. But knowing this doesn’t stop the worry that grows every day.

Webber told him that Amber hasn’t been returning her family’s calls and her symptoms have gotten worse since last night. He also said the nurses were busy, so he appointed DeLuca to go and check on her since it’s his day off.

He put on his spare baby blue scrubs that he had around his apartment knowing he would need to burn his clothes after the visit. He is grateful to Maya for lending him a gown, goggles and KN95 mask from her station when he told her where he was going. She also told him to come back after so she can hose him down with sanitizer in a serious tone.

He stops outside room 1401 and knocks on the door, “Amber? It’s Andrew are you in there?”

He waits several moments that feel like an eternity before he knocks on the door harder, “Amber?!” He pulls out the spare key the front desk gave him and the door opens after scanning. He quickly enters the room, closing the door behind him and sees Amber in bed huddled under a blanket with her eyes closed. The sight of her unmoving body causes him to assume the worst and he shakes her body trying to wake her up.

“Amber! Can you hear me?!” Amber groans at his voice slowly opening her tired eyes, seeing her awake and responsive finally makes Andrew breathe, “Thank god your awake.”

“Andrew?” Amber asks in a nasally voice looking up at him with confusion, “Am I in hell?”

Andrew chuckles at that willing to take an insult if it means she is able to, “No thank god, can you sit up?”

Amber groans but complies sitting up in full view in her blue tank top. She’s wearing black sweatpants that are covered by the comforter on her lap. She reaches over to her nightstand where she has two tissue boxes and a mask that she puts on. Andrew registers a small trash can next to her bed that is filled with used tissues no doubt used by her. He hooks her up to a pulse ox monitor on her fingertip before moving to check her breathing.

He takes his stethoscope out, “Didn’t you hear the phone ring? Your family has been calling.”

Amber explains as he hears her chest, “I turned the ringer off and set up my alarm for three hours I don’t know why you all are making a big deal out of this.” Amber checks her phone that causes her to see the problem, “And I didn’t start the timer, that’s perfect. How long was I out?”

“Seven hours. Lean forward.” Andrew informs her as she leans forward so he can listen to her breathing in her back, “Your lungs sound good on both sides, they said you’ve been getting headaches and feeling fatigue has it gotten worse since then?”

“Why are you here?” Amber bitterly asks with a nasally voice, “Aren’t there nurses that do this or did I draw the short straw as usual and get saddled with you?”

“Our nurses are busy with other visits.” Andrew tells her trying not to take her insults too personally, “There are other staff members that caught this thing and their hotel rooms are scattered across the city.”

“I guess I’m not the only one who got infected by an arrogant asshat who likes to spit in people faces.” Amber half jokes, “I think you and that guy should get a beer and make a podcast on why your right and everybody else are idiots.”

“You’re not gonna drive me away Amber.” Andrew states blankly knowing her tactics, “I’m here, I’m doing your exam and if need be, I’ll take you to the hospital if your numbers aren’t where they should be.”

“Not if I kill you first.” Amber numbly says feeling her anger dissipate due to her illness, “And I don’t have to drive you away it didn’t take much last time.”

Andrew inhales knowing she’s mad that he’s here while she’s vulnerable and is putting up a mean front to push him away. However, he knows the only way to gain Amber’s trust in him is to ride through her punches and show he’s committed.

“Well last time I was manic and irrational and made very stupid choices that almost drove all the people I love away. I’ve set boundaries, I’ve been taking my meds and going to therapy. I’ve impressed Webber enough for him to vouch for me to your folks who agreed to let me come here and make sure your okay.”

“They sent you here because they were hoping I would kill you by either strangulation or covid.”

Andrew chuckles darkly, “Yeah, I know. Your pulse ox is at 94, do you feel shortness of breath? Do you have trouble breathing?”

“No, I can breathe as long as I use up half my tissue supply.” Amber informs him as she lies back on the bed, “And my D-dimers and inflammatory markers were all negative the last time the nurse drew my blood.”

“Yeah, but that was 24 hours ago I’m gonna draw more blood and put a rush on it.” Andrew sets her up for a blood draw.

“Fine whatever just take what you need and go.” Andrew is hurt by her cold tone and what follows, “And next time I’ll take a nurse even if the next one is by the end of this thing. I already see you at work and it’s painful enough I don’t need to see you when I am sick and tired it makes everything worse. Okay this is actually causing me pain and not the good kind. Just put the needle in my vein and leave.”

Andrew sighs at that and is anguished by her cold treatment but does as she instructs taking her blood choosing to keep quiet seeing that his presence upsets Amber. He only wishes he was the one to mend her pain instead of amplifying it.

Doctor Who - the Empire of Death

This was honestly one the better season finales written by Davies, but that is a very low bar. None of the new series show runners have been anywhere near as good at writing long-running storylines as they think they are. Sutekh was kind of wasted as a villain. He got less to go on than in the original story, where he was obsessed with ending all life out of paranoia that eventually something might evolve that could surpass him. Here he's just a generic bad guy who wants to kill everything for no real given reason. His defeat was also pretty silly. You're telling me that the god who scared the piss out of the Toymaker couldn't get out of a rope? Yeah it's a science rope, but its still a rope. The Toymaker and the Maestro could casually alter reality but the guy who scares both of them is beaten by a hook. Also, Sutekh survives being dumped into the time vortex the first time and the big solution to him returning even more power is to dump him in the vortex again. Brilliant plan. The Toymaker and Maestro were beaten in a way consistent with their godly domain (losing a game and finding a specific sequence of music). It would have been a lot cooler if Sutekh's defeat followed that trend. Use some kind of symbolic defeat of death to undo his actions.

Calling back to 73 Yards without even attempting to explain what in the sam hell was going on in that episode is kind of annoying. You could have tied the blatant magic of that plot into the pantheon, but nope.

The reveal of Ruby's mom's identity was silly. I guess I can buy Suteks thinking she was pointing at him and his paranoia of thinking she somehow saw him resulting in him accidentally imbuing her with powers by believing she had powers. That's not really what the show went with, but I can pretend.

Ruby referring to her bio mom as her real mom was a big oof moment. A real slap in the face to her adoptive mom.

Davies is so obsessed with giving bizarre hints to future stories he's now doing it as a season-ending cliffhanger. "Ooh, who is the mysterious neighbor? You'll just have to keep watching to find out!". Moffat did that too during 11's run and he ended up having too much hanging plot threads with the Silence, church, Kovarian, Trenzalore, etc that he had to slam it together in one absolute mess of a finale. Please don't do that again. That being said, it really speaks to how awful of a head writer Chibnal was that Davies can still write circles around him.

Consistently through the new series the season-long story arcs have been my least favorite part of each season. I much prefer the standalone episodes. The classic show almost never did running plotlines. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the key to time and trial of a time lord arcs, the latter of which was so bad it almost killed the show. I would love a season of nothing but standalone episodes with maybe a two-parter or two.

If you want a (in my opinion) better take on the Doctor fighting gods, the Big Finish audio drama elder gods storyline is a better one, consisting of the dramas House of Blue Fire, Protect and Survive, Black and White, Gods and Monsters, Afterlife, and Signs and Wonders. There's some backstory involved, but I didn't listen to most of that and still followed the story just fine. A Big Finish story featuring Sutekh that I liked better than this episode is the two parter of Kill the Doctor!, and The Age of Sutekh, found on the Fourth Doctor Adventures season 7 volume 2 collection. And if you haven't seen Sutekh's debut in the Pyramids of Mars, drop everything and go watch it now.

This season only getting 8 episodes was criminal. Next season better be at least 12. Fucking Disney+. 15 is a fantastic Doctor and Ruby ended up growing on me a lot even after the Christmas episode put a bad taste in my mouth. I do think the show has pulled itself out of the hole the late Moffat and Chibnal eras dug for it. Not saying there's weren't good episodes in those eras, but I do think this season helped bring new Who back to its late-RTD/early Moffat high point.

shout out to ninjago for being the longest running Lego show, and having the most INSANE lore ever.

yes it’s targeted at kids aged 8 and up, but the writing is genuinely strong as shit and despite the continuity getting a bit fucky after season 8.

(because the Lego ninjago movie released and they changed the art style and it kinda made everything a bit weird. It’s grown on me alot and now it’s a favorite of mine)

Anyway some people have doctor who, or Star Trek or supernatural I got fucking ninjago.

it has about 15? 17? Seasons. And a bunch of web shorts and 2 pilots.

Ok, so as a doctor who fan, I gotta ask. How do you plan on this working? Because I'm all for a crossover, the Doctor would probably adore the cybertronian race. Maybe he knows Vector Prime, being the "Prime of Time" after all. But if you're trying to go with a sort of, like, Optimus physically working like the Doctor, how do you mean? Like are we talking ideology? Because they're both already very similar characters in that regard. "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" is a concept the Doctor, someone who's actively tried saving as many people as possible, with as little casualties as possible, including some of his worst enemies, would be 100% behind in believing. Or something to do with biology? I know you don't know much about Doctor Who so please don't take this the wrong way, but how much do you know of the basic idea of how the Doctor's race works? Because the concept of regeneration is very different from what I'm assuming for Optimus' case is the Matrix.

While the Matrix does contain the collective information/wisdom/memory(sparks?) of the previous Primes, but that's just it, a collective. They are all separate people having been passed down the Matrix along the line. A Time Lord's regeneration is different. Each Doctor, while being a completely different personality (or actor, if you wanna get meta about it), is still the same character, the same man, the Doctor.

Regeneration, as it is described in the show by the Doctor, is a way that his race, the Time Lords of Gallifray, cheat death. When they get close to death, their body undergoes a change. A big, drastic, dramatic one that changes every cell in their body replacing them simultaneously with new, working, and healthy cells. This often comes with not only a wardrobe change, but a complete make over. They can look completely different from the last face they had, including race and gender. Each face is unique, even down to their personality. They can only do this 12 times however (though because he's the Doctor and the main character, he gets to bend this rule.) How they even get this ability is when children of gallifray turn 8 years old, they are taken from their families and forced to look into the untempered schism. It's a tear in the fabric of space and time which just spews all this temporal energy (or something, who knows, the show's not really clear or I'm probably just misremembering) and it does something to them. The Doctor says when they gaze into it, it can have various results on the psyche, some feel inspired, afraid, or even go mad. After that, they are enrolled in the "Academy". Most of this information is found in the two parter special for the end of series 3, I believe. The season with Martha Jones as the Doctor's companion and the Master (basically the Megatron to the Doctor's Optimus) is trying to take over the universe (again) or at least the earth, probably a show of power just to get back at the Doctor or something, been a while since I've rewatched Nu-who from the beginning.

Now, I don't know a lot about Doctor Who. I've never watched Doctor Who and I've never been a part of the fandom.

📚December 2024 Book Review📚

Happy New Year everyone! And to end it up with only one day of delay here's the last reviews for 2024!

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood

It was interesting but not my favorite Atwood so far. Grace's point of view was sometimes hard to follow, but the change of writing style to mark the difference of class and education between her and the doctor was a meaningful choice. I liked the mystery, the contradicting versions of what happened and the confusion of the poor doctor trying to unravel all this.

I am not opposed to open endings so the lack of answers at the end was not a problem to me but I understand that it can bother others. When you write about real events it's delicate to whether someone is or isn't guilty, better to let the readers judge by themselves.

Le Père Porcher (Chroniques du Disque-Monde #20) by Terry Pratchett

I wanted to reread it for Christmas season and, for a twist, to read the french translation by Patrice Couton. I don't credit translator enough but I always heard the highest praise for his work on the Discworld Novels. They are well deserved, the translation is amazing! Incredible work on the names, hilarious translations of the puns, it works so well! The story itself is just as good as I remembered, Death is really an amazing character.

Soie by Alessandro Baricco

I don't see the appeal. There is some nice writing, the repetitive aspects give it a nice fairy tale vibe but that's it. It barely mention the journey to Japan, barely mention silk. Which is the damn title. Instead you have a guy that travels across Europe and Asia to cheat on his wife. This wasn't was I hoped for from the title and blurb, I am just disappointed.

A Day of Fallen Night (Root of Chaos #0) by Samantha Shannon

I loved The Priory of the Orange Tree when I read it three years ago so I was excited to read the prequel. If you are like me and picked if long after reading book 1, I strongly recommend catching up on the lore before reading and if you haven't read book 1 yet DO NOT start with A Day of Fallen Night: this might be a prequel but it is not an introduction.

That said I loved it, convoluted and lore heavy as it is: it brings back all the places I loved in book 1 with even more details put on the world building and tradition. The multiple point of views are well used and they come together in really satisfying ways. Even if the threat is more or less the same as in The Priory of the Orange Tree the way they figure a solution and the fight was so good!

Retour à St Mary (Cosy Christmas Mystery #1) by Carine Pitocchi

Plain bad, and that's not the just me saying it, that's 100% of my local book club. Don't hope for a whodunit, the mystery barely qualifies as a police novel, the investigation is confusing and the culprit, obvious. This is also half of a Christmas cheesy hallmark romance. The bad half that is, because at the end Unsufferable Female Lead takes a train and just leaves behind Secretly In Love Childhood Best Friend Who Happens To Be An Anglican Priest For Some Reason Male Love Interest. It just sucks. Don't bother.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

I really liked it, the main character spiralling down pulled me down two and at several moments I was genuinely spooked. I read it a little too quickly to fully appreciate it tho I think, I will need to reread it again!

Prince Caspian (The Chronicles of Niania #02) by C S Lewis

I don't really have much too say. Just like the first book I had watched the movie a hundred times before and I was just too old for it. It is a cute story tho, I love the talking animals, especially Reepicheep.

Winter Spirits short story collection

Overall a nice read: this is an anthology featuring 12 different authors which means 12 different spin on the spooky christmas ghost story. There's only one I actively didn't like and four where I went to check what else the author had done because I needed to study how their brain worked. I originally picked the book because it features a story by Stuart Turton, who wrote The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. His story is good but I especially loved those by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, Andrew Michael Hurley, and Natashe Pulley.

The Agatha Christie Book Club #1 by C A Larmer

This was fun but not as good as reading an Agatha Christie novel. The investigation is a little convoluted, with clues that aren't really clear to the reader. And honestly if I were the characters being interviewed by the book club member twenty seven times in one week I too would have been annoyed and slammed the door. It was a bit frustrating that the pay off required to have biographical knowledge of Christie's life. It was all explained in the end but you couldn't really follow along. The book is good but my expectations were miscalculated, I'll adjust when reading the rest of the series.

The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei

This wouldn't be enough to call it Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade In Space but this is very much what it is. And more. It has some really cool element of world building and alien species with complex history and dynamics. The characters were very good too, the relationship between Uncle and Maia I was especially fond of, medic is touching too, I just took most of the book to warm up to Will. Emotional, action packed, full of twist and investigation and museum heist. Very warm recommendation.

Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo

Gut punches galore. It had been a long time since I read a horror novel that genuinely scared me and boy was I scared. I have next to zero knowledge of the US South but the description were so vivid I could feel the heat. Also a gold star for most fucked up gay relationship to Andrew and Eddy, this should be so hot but somehow it is, good luck to Sam unpacking this mess.
