Interactive Fiction - An Introduction

Interactive fiction is a very specific medium of storytelling which combines the best features of a book with the most engaging elements of a choice-based game. It allows the reader (player?) to create their own character and make choices that influence the way the story progresses and how their character interacts with their environment.

This, arguably, makes interactive fiction one of the most immersive ways of engaging with a story!

Its unique blend of a novel and a game makes for a genre of fiction which is;

1. Incredibly immersive and dynamic

2. Very accessible and convenient

3. Characterised by a very active and close-knit community of readers

There are so many stories of all sorts and genres, so it is almost guaranteed that you will find something that fits your preferences. Some of the most popular, and (in my opinion) some of the best, titles include:

- The Wayhaven Chronicles, by Mishka Jenkins

- Fallen Hero, by Malin Rydén

- Samurai of Hyuga, by Devon Connell

- Can I add my own work in progress? I don't know, but I will. The Pioneer Project is on its way ;)

I would encourage everyone who hasn't experienced interactive fiction yet to pick up a story that sounds interesting and try it out. I think the genre is criminally underrated, and we haven't even scratched the surface of what is possible with this medium of storytelling!

Nous sommes mardi et je viens de me rappeler que cette semaine je n’aurai aucun cours de kinésithérapie. C’est à la fois un choix de ma part après le fiasco de la dernière séance, mais c’est surtout dû à une indisponibilité de lui et moi. J’ai hâte d’en finir avec ces cours pour tout vous dire car ce type je ne l’aurai même pas regardé dans la vrai vie! Pas qu’il n’est pas attirant, il l’est sûrement pour certaines personnes, mais pas pour moi. C’est trop le genre de type bon vivant, sociable, bref les garçons cool de l’école là! Vraiment pas MON genre! C’est pour ça que toute cette ambiguïté me dépasse aaaaarrrggg! C’est possible aussi que ce ne soit qu’une attirance sexuelle. Peut être que je viens d’expérimenter pour la première fois de ma vie une attirance sexuelle sans qu’il n’y ai sentiment/attirance intellectuelle. Possible mais je ne serais pas ce genre de personne, j’apporte trop d’importance au personne dans la vie de tous les jours pour lâcher ce principe dans mon intimité! Je refuse!

Bref! C’est la seule vrai info. Il ne se passe rien dans ma vie dsl en même temps je vous avais prévenu ! Voilà pourquoi ce deuxième poste a pris si longtemps à être fait. Mais qu’est ce que je vais raconter? Franchement a part mon problème d’attirance ou pas pour mon kinésithérapeute il ne se passe rien absolument rien!

En ce moment je lis le troisième roman de Sally rooney: beautiful world where are you. J’ai adoré conversations with friends que j’ai fini d’un trait car il m’emmenait où il voulait m’emmener, j’étais une vrai éponge pendant tout le livre. Par contre ce dernier livre je le trouve bancale il peut parfois être très intéressant puis l’instant d’après beaucoup moins! Je ne suis même pas encore au quart du livre donc mon avis n’est pas pertinent. Mais ce que j’adore sur cette auteure ce sont ses personnages, ils sont tellement réalistes, l’introverti/mélancolique en moi s’y retrouve toujours.

Son personnage de connell par exemple dans normal people, c’est moi! Les sentiments forts nous paralysent et du coup nous finissons par décevoir ceux qui nous entourent. On subit notre manque de confiance en nous tout en enviant les personnes sure d’eux. En tant qu’introverti nous vivons beaucoup dans notre tête, réfléchissons beaucoup trop avant de faire n’importe quoi, et devons nous faire violence parfois pour paraître « normaux ».

Bref en commençant ce texte je ne pensais pas me retrouver à expliquer ce qu’est être introverti. Une définition toute personnelle mais justement personnelle. Bref si vous rencontrez des introverti ne les rejeter pas, ne les pensez pas froids aux autres, hautains, au contraire ce sont en général des hypersensibles, une hypersensibilité tellement incontrôlable que la seule solution que l’on a c’est de justement tout faire pour la cacher et ce qui ce passe c’est qu’on fini par cacher tout le reste, cacher notre vrai personnalité!

Drew my ronin from the interactive fiction called Samurai of Hyuga by Devon Connell. Named her as Jirao and her spirit animal is none other than Akita Inu. Fits her perfectly.  I felt that my life force went to this one because of their clothes... Lol. First it was supposed to be just Jirao, but then I drew my dear boys Masashi and Toshio with the Akita Inu in the background. Haha. And I didn’t bother to draw anything else after that as you can see. XD

Anyway, I love the series and hardly can wait for the book 5.

Hello! Aspiring author here.

First off, I want to say Greenwarden is a masterpiece that I have been following since its release in 2019. It broke my heart when you announced about switching to Twine, which I don't find the interface appealing (I only read on my phone, and Twine doesn't automatically adjust the text for a more mobile-friendly experience.) But because I love your story so much, I'm determined to read it once it comes out in itch.io 😤 that's how much I love this book.

I'm planning on making my own book under CoG/HG as well, however there are certain themes in my story that might not be published due to creative differences with its administration.

My question is: What were CoG/HG's content standards that restricted you from publishing under their name? And what policies that you reconsidered under their contract?

If this is too uncomfortable and personal to answer, please don't feel obligated in answering. I'm just a fan having second thoughts on releasing my own if.

As for CoG’s content standards, what made me most uncomfortable was their lack of transparency regarding what their content standards actually are. First and foremost they allow games like Samurai of Hyuga on their platform (I assume because Devon Connell is tight with Jason Hill). I’m of the opinion that particular cesspit is best put on fetish sites for the consumption of 4chan neckbeards, for reasons I’ve already explained. It’s not even the kind of edgy that explores deep concepts like “the freedom of self in the face of predetermination” or “how minority voices are silenced by oppositional forces.” It’s just weeb wank written by a white guy.

Secondly, their forum moderation is hot garbage, the stink I’ve which I’ve been quaffed with first-hand. Half the time the CoG forums are rampant with straight up homophobes and transphobes, and as a queer trans person I do not ever want to be associated with, nor do I feel safe around, that. I get that they can’t control everyone, but when multiple people have asked you to clean up the TERFs on their website and you don’t — and on several occasions ban the people asking instead — then I’m pulling my shit out of there faster than if you gave a cow a laxative. Not to mention the fact that they have permabanned users for *looks at my ipad* rightfully complaining about their forum policies on their Tumblr pages, a third party website not affiliated with CoG???? But ok the users who openly call people slurs on other websites can stay. Sure.

Lastly, CoG pays Hosted authors very, very little in comparison to their contracted authors. As in, contracted authors are paid around 10k for even producing a proof of concept, while Hosted authors have to be content with the majority share of their profits going to CoG. Which, to me, feels like the biggest and most insidious pyramid scheme I’ve ever heard of. I think I’d rather have a tea party with the ghost of Ronald Reagan, now that I think about it.

Anyways. Sorry about the rant!! Now that I’m not beholden to Jason Hill’s all-seeing eye I might have gone a little ham.

Once I saw that one of my popular and mostly likeable posts was about IF, I decided to share with you my personal top of the best IF authors I have known. 

I read a lot of WIPs (work in progress) and finished novels since three long years, so I might recommend truly incredible stories. I apologies for adding pics and some additional info about my MC, but I wanted to bring spark of life into this top.

On your first scouting mission of the hot season, you meet the leader of the People Across the Orange Plains. Will you break from the Community you have known your whole life? Ask a romantic partner to join you? Discover secrets that your own people have been hiding? Become a leader yourself?

Your life isn’t going how you’d hoped. Despite having big plans when you graduated, you’re stuck in a dead end job and a crappy flat with zero romantic life to speak of. All until a friend convinces you to join the cast of a new reality TV show.

The premise is simple: 12 singles are sent to a villa on a tropical island and they live there together for a month. After 28 days, the couple who is voted by the other islanders as being most likely to withstand the test of time will win £500,000. In addition, the couple with the highest body count will win £500,000. Total prize pool? £1,000,000.

In this context, “body count” refers to how many people you’ve slept with… right? Well, that’s what you think when you sign your contract. Turns out, though, that not all of your fellow cast members will be using that definition to get to the prize.

Fall in love, win big money, solve some murders and try to stay.

You play as an OPERATIVE of Scytha Industries, a highly selective private security company. As their most elite Operative, you possess many skills and talents, not to mention top-of-the-line equipment - including your very own AI module, IVI.

This, of course, puts a price on your head. An AI module goes for billions on the black market; carrying one around in your skull is, perhaps, not the safest idea. Sure, you’re more than a match for anyone who might come after you - but no-one outside the high levels of Scytha knows about it, so you should be safe anyway, right?
