Now, I haven't watched the video of this particular conference in several years, so I don't remember all the details. But I remember the story well enough to summarize it. It was Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, from the original Dark Shadows TV series, relating how he first heard about the part.

According to Jonathan, he was on his way to California to give up acting and become a teacher. He hadn't even planned to stop by his apartment, but he he did on a whim, just to pick up something or put something in order or whatever. He had just arrived, hadn't even opened the door, when he heard the telephone ringing. He rushed to answer it, and it was his agent, who said, "Look, I know you're on your way to start teaching in California, but you said didn't have to leave just yet, and I've got a role I think you'd be perfect for. I wasn't even gonna call, but I thought, 'why not'? It's just a little six-week gig on a daytime soap opera that nobody's really watching, anyway. They've already got the story laid out, you're gonna get killed off in 6 weeks. You can fit this in your schedule, right?"

Jonathan relayed this story at... I don't remember, I think it was perhaps the 20th or 25th anniversary Dark Shadows convention. He concluded his story by saying, "Well... here we are."

She blinked the blurriness from her eyes and looked at him first from the mirror, then turned around with a raised brow at his costume of choice.

“Dean Winchester? Really? You’re not even trying,” she laughed softly, then returned to quickly finish up with her look. He deflated slightly, pouting as he made his way to her, he got down on his knees and sat back on his legs to admire her.

“Wanda isn't a hero, but Dean is,” he argued after giving some thought to how to respond to her comment. She squinted her eyes, giving him the side-eye, just then she finished up and then turned to face him. He blinked up at her innocently, green eyes wide and pretty, his lashes fluttering like a princess against his freckled cheeks.

She grasped his chin with her black-stained fingers, leaning forward so her red-tinted lips brushed against his, “as a mother, I have to disagree.” He blushed, but excitedly tried to lean forward to claim her lips only for her to pull away with a little tsk. “You’re so pretty like this, baby, on your knees for me like a good boy,” she murmured seductively, swiping her thumb across his pillowy lip.

“Don’t do this to me now,” he moaned, leaning forward to nuzzle his nose against hers. His hands clung tightly to her leather covered thighs and she turned her face slightly to kiss him with a playful smile on her lips. He slid his hands up her legs, grasping her hips to tug her forward, off the chair, and into his lap to deepen the kiss. “You’re so hot,” he mumbled when he pulled away just a bit to breathe. Okay, maybe she did call him names, but they were meant affectionately. And mostly it was names relating to his freckles or his green eyes that were too hilarious or accurate for her to stop her mom from calling him even when he was right there. Like a codename girls use for their crushes or people they dislike.

“You said she liked me!” He exclaimed quietly, grabbing her arm to twirl her around and pull her into his chest.

“She does! I’m messing with you, baby,” she promised, leaning up to kiss the worry from his face. “You’re perfect and she knows that,” Y/N said earnestly, cupping his face in her hands, “she knows you’re an amazing husband and an even better father. I love you so much. I swear, no, I promise you, she likes you too. She told me you were a keeper, Jay.” She looked up at him with the widest, in-love-with-you eyes he just couldn’t help the way it immediately made him relax.

“She did?” He asked softly, wrapping his arms around her waist.

Y/N nodded, her own arms circling around his neck. “I was in love with you from the start and she knew it. She saw everything that you were and she convinced me to go for it before someone else whisked you away. Thanks to her, you’re mine.” Y/N leaned up to kiss him again, softly, tenderly.

“Thanks to her, you’re mine,” Jensen corrected quietly. “Sorry, didn’t mean to get so insecure,” he chuckled, brushing her cheek with his fingers lovingly.

“I shouldn’t have said that as a joke, I’m sorry too.” She grabbed his hand and kissed it softly, “let's get out of here.” He kissed her forehead and nodded in agreement, letting her lead all the way downstairs to greet her mother and say goodbye to their children.

“Dean and Wanda?” Misha asked, taking a large sip of his beer. “What a strange couple, but the two of them are crazy about family so…” he smiled broadly, hugging them both. Y/N laughed, squeezing Misha’s side as Jensen patted his back.

“And you’re.. the Mandalorian, but without your helmet on…” Jensen chuckled, pulling away first to ruffle Misha’s already messy hair.

“How else am I supposed to drink beer and eat candy?” He shouted over the music, then dragged the two of them inside to allow people an easier way in. Misha led them into the kitchen, talking about how he’d somehow lost his Grogu toy somewhere in Jared’s house. “Anyway, go crazy you two.. but not as crazy as the people you’re dressed up as,” Misha teased, patting them both on their heads before making his way somewhere else to have fun.

“Well..” Jensen chuckled as he watched Misha leave.

“I love him,” she said happily, then started to put together Jensen’s drink.

“Same,” Jensen smiled, watching her with a loving look. “So… about what you were saying earlier… about me dressing up as Dean? Did you mean that?” He asked, leaning against the counter, attempting to be completely cool about his question, trying not to give away that it's something he’d considered for a while: role playing as Dean during sex.

“Yes?” She confirmed hesitantly, handing him the Old Fashion she’d prepared then started to make her own drink. “Why? Got something naughty in mind?” She asked, glancing up at him every now and then, seeing the blush on his face either from the heat of the house filled with mostly strangers or from whatever was going on in his mind.

“Always,” he grinned bravely, taking a large gulp of the whiskey for his sudden bashfulness. She raised a brow at him, her interest piqued, placing a few gummy worms into her already sweet drink.

“You gonna tell me or show me?” She asked, stepping forward as he took another sip. He choked on it a little, glanced around for anybody who could be watching or listening. At that time, she took a gummy worm and dangled it in front of him playfully. He obediently opened his mouth and let her push the gummy worm inside, the sweet and sour taste making him hum softly in satisfaction.

“Well, I-I was just gonna make a suggestion,” he stuttered, his mouth slightly full with the chewed up candy. He swallowed quickly when she licked her fingers lasciviously, just as he reached behind her to steal a bag of gummy bears.

“I think…” she murmured, hooking her fingers onto his belt loops and tugging him forward. “I think you should honour your costume and show me. Here.” He blinked down at her, his eyes wide and completely astounded at her bold words.

He downed the rest of the whiskey, knowing he’d definitely need it if she was going to keep it up with the hot flirting. He carefully dumped his cup into the sink then tried to follow her, only to lose her in the literal sea of bodies, salty and heavy. He easily found Jared even in his Green Arrow costume, standing high above most of the people. He was dancing and laughing with Gen, who was dressed as Wonder Woman, the two of them were talking to someone Jensen didn’t know.

“Hey, sorry to interrupt,” Jensen said politely, turning to Jared. The man was kind and smiled at Jensen, standing off to the side to let Jensen have a quick chat with Jared and Gen. “Have you guys seen Y/N? I sorta lost her. Great costumes by the way,” Jensen rushed out, anxiously trying to get them to respond.

“Hey, Jensen!” Jared’s voice boomed, pulling him into a tight hug, drawing a wheeze from Jensen, which made Genevieve smack him. Jared pulled away and pouted at her, rubbing his arm dramatically but then became serious to focus on Jensen’s question.

“Yeah, she went upstairs with Misha, said it was a bit loud for her,” Gen replied, then made a little ‘oomph’ sound when Jensen hugged her quickly and said a quick thanks to them. Jared and Genevieve looked at each other curiously then got distracted by that same man who joined back in to continue their conversation.

Jensen knew that wasn’t actually the case, but he went upstairs anyway. Couples were kissing loudly and groping each other along the staircase, but upstairs must have been off limits because there was basically no one, just Misha waiting outside one of the doors while holding Y/N’s drink.

“Jensen! She’s using the restroom. Also, this is really sweet,” Misha laughed, handing Jensen the drink so he could try it. Jensen smiled and took the glass, lovingly looking at the colourful drink and the sugar rimmed edge, gummy worms swimming around inside. THE CULTURAL IMPACT OF BATTLE ROYALE

The Japanese cult classic film Battle Royale [based on the novel of the same name] became a worldwide success, inspiring movies, videos games, and establishing its very own genre of deathmatch-centered media.

From PUBG to Fortnite, The Hunger Games, and even Squid Game, the footprint it has left is immeasurable. A movie that follows a class of middle school students participating in a brutal game, forcing them to take the lives of their friends to save their own, continues to be a cultural phenomenon for the generations that follow.

The Republic of Greater East Asia, middle school students、a deserted island and one challenge: “only one will survive.”

This is the plot of `Battle Royale バトルロワイアル` the bestseller， that gave birth to the ominous genre later. Behind the scenes after the popularity of the novel written by Koushun Takami which reached a million sold copies only in Japan, began a cycle of reverberating actions. Only a year after the serialization of the published manga in Japan it soon became a feature film with a rare R15+rating.

The novel portrays a large dictator-like governmental agency that selects a class of middle schoolers for their so-called ‘Program’. A ruthless and bloody battle on a deserted island that will see only one winner.

Every student is provided with a random weapon or utility tool however, at the same time each student finds him/herself with a metal collar on their neck. It provides the agency with a constant GPS location and is ready to explode if there is even the slightest attempt of breaking the rules of the game.

Girls and boys with completely different social backgrounds and personalities have to face this grim destiny and see themselves cornered by the most violent and survivalist situations humanly thinkable. All this in order to preserve their own lives. They will have to fight! Fight to the death!

What started after a short career as a reporter, 30yo Takami would leave his job in pursuit of his inner vocation: writing novels.

In 1997 he presented his work to the literary competition “Japan Grand Prix Horror Novel”. During the final round, he succumbed to defeat; arguing that the story should have won the competition. However, controversies surfaced surrounding the plot of middle schoolers forced to kill each other. In turn this made many people and some of the judges of a horror literary competition shake in disapproval, resulting in a prize refusal.

In the same year of 1999, the novel would be published gaining great esteem in Japan, initiating an irreversible cultural movement…

THE BATTLE ROYALE GENRE

A brute totalitarian organization that can do anything. A defined amount of participants, weapons, and usually an island, where over time the explorable area becomes smaller and smaller, facilitating encounters between individuals.

This is the perfect mix that makes, us the readers, ponder about human nature, violence, and extreme survival circumstances.

Thanks to these thrilling emotions and feelings, Battle Royale has quickly become a staple, in the entertainment world of movies, novels, manga, and videogames, and so forth gaining great success in each respective industry.

This plot has received many alterations during the course of time, and the reinterpretation from some other authors. Of which led to the storyline changing shape: thanks to Suzanne Collins, author of the novel `The Hunger Games`. People could see a new dress for Battle Royale in 2008, ushering in a dystopian world where an authoritarian government chooses not middle schoolers this time, but young individuals from different suburbs to fight until death. Merely for broadcasting entertainment; as its predecessor and mentor, this story was meant to be a mirror depicting our society`s own brutality.

The Hunger Games obtained incredible acclaim, mainly after its content was brought to a more mainstream audience thanks to its film, whose earnings reached the ones of colossuses like Harry Potter or The Dark Knight[BATMAN], who were releasing their respective sequels in movie theaters during the same year.

Another great milestone was set, for the growth of this new genre; which could be thanks to Brendan Greene: better known for his online nickname `PlayerUnknown`.

Following his instinct as a DayZ and Arma 3 player as well as freelance web designer, he developed on his own a Mod for such game that later on would become the `DayZ: Battle Royale` Mod, inspired by the Japanese `Battle Royale` movie from the year 2000.

Through this important achievement, Brandon’s career kept rolling until an offer from Korea brought him to work for the videogame company ‘Krafton’. There as creative director, he was able to give birth to PUBG (Player Unknown Battlegrounds). A game defined by its large-scale conflict where players fight to be the last one standing in a constantly shrinking arena.

In 2017 after a few days after its release, it became an international phenomenon setting records off the ‘Steam’ online videogame platform, counting up to 3 million users connected playing online.

From then on every other ‘Battle Royale’ game would have these similar features. Undeniably, we can say that PUBG set the foundation for this new genre within the gaming world.

Not too long after this important accomplishment, a mightier figure quickly came in, under the brand `Epic Games`.

The bigger the company, the bigger the investment and as a result an unprecedented shake in the videogame industry: it was ‘Fortnite’.

For the first time, a company was able to create a game with a very colorful and simple but yet detailed design. "Which was and still is today, its strongest point. Thanks to this unprecedented aesthetic the free-to-play game was able to attract millions of users of the most wide ages.

The crazy skins that oftentimes were connected to real-life events/films/culture and the `Epic Games` work in collaborating with famous influencers of the video gaming industry. But also huge artists and musicians, raised the bar so high, for a videogame whose playability and fun was already excellent.

Fortnite is nowadays a colossus company able to generate a gross worth of 9Billion USD and has become one of the most popular and played videogames of all time.

After these two big milestones in the videogame industry reinventing a Battle Royale game, it would be a great challenge for others to take on. Especially after many technical aspects of the game have been already developed and discovered throughout the years.

If the direction is correct, sometimes it’s good to step back and see what you could do from back there or even improve.

Taking away the violence from a Battle Royale game, things wouldn`t be the same because the emotions and feelings that make us excited, are the staples of this genre. Still, someone like `Mediatonic` was able to resize these feelings and transform the whole thing into a non-violent-competition, but still with progressive elimination.

Influenced by TV game shows and Battle Royale, `Fall Guys` published on the 4th of August 2020, has rewritten the modality of the genre.

Violence can be replaced by competition dictated by skill and also fun: in a game where up to 60 players, impersonating a bean-like avatar, face different stages and challenges that require different abilities, the winner will be only one receiving an in-game money prize.

Not like its predecessor, but still with great numbers the game was one of the top downloaded and purchased of the year. Bringing a new interpretation to the Battle Royale genre was a big deal in the industry, especially because of the important influence that this change of view could have brought to the next futures.

Every single stage of this metamorphosis has created a different nuance to this genre and brought new imaginary scenarios to life.

If in the videogame industry the main focus of a Battle Royale game is set on the map, weapons, and playability, in the movie industry a major focus can be shifted on characters and psychology. Creating an exciting story that can reflect different aspects of our modern society.

You and other persons are held against their will, in a deadly competition where one’s life is put on the edge of a blade every minute: if able to endure everything and reach the end, the prize will be immense.

Thanks to the Korean film director, producer, and screenwriter we had a new and incredible setting for a revisited Battle Royale survival TV series.

Set in a parallel version of nowadays South Korea, a number of people were promised a mountain of money as the winning prize. They are lured and kidnapped into a deadly and sadistic competition that will see only one winner.

We don`t see people directly fighting each other in an open map, but rather compete in different sets, reminding us of 80`s/90`s Japanese game shows featuring physical and skill challenges.

With this new focus, we are able to empathize with every character of the story and live with them like a real nightmare.

Since the beginning of September 2021 `Squid Game` has become a real shock and revelation for millions of people also thanks to Netflix. Now one of the top streaming platforms worldwide.

The TV series has gained a large following very quickly, in an escalation of a broken record grossing profits generated.

While the green tracksuit and black masks with white triangle shapes on them still are spotted around our everyday life, another chapter of the Battle Royale genre is influencing our culture and slowly becoming a staple in our imagination.

esides the incredible success of this genre, it`s fascinating to reflect on how this mix of primordial feelings and society mirror-like storyline is able to thrill its audience in every single one of its shapes. On one side the society is drawn to the plot because of the lunacy yet rich emotional situations that are created. On the other hand, it's able to put itself in such situations or just wonder what it would or could do in a critical circumstance.

It is true that the survival instinct is within us and even though we don`t use it anymore in today’s society, it’s still a part of our obsolete instincts that tap into our darkest side. The overflow, where we can still relate to how powerful these feelings still, are.

BATTLE ROYALE: MOVIE & MANGA

The action/thriller movie published around the year 2000, was directed by (深作 欣二) Kinji Fukasaku, better known for his movies about Yakuza such as Battles Without Honor and Humanity, and based on Koushun`s novel `Battle Royale`.

It was so controversial that at the beginning was banned from international distribution, and when screened in Japan for the first time it was advised as an R+15 years of age which was unusual for the time. This didn`t stop the audience from wanting to witness this new gem, making it become the highest-grossing film for six weeks in a row at that time.

The film follows truthfully to the original novel from Koushun only with small changes. During the storyline, the audience is able to notice that the character development of every single student is not made with the same depth as in the novel. Which might result in a flattened version of our favorite student characters.

That said, in the movie we will still find plenty of blood as well as a well-built set, able to evoke our fantasies of sceneries and encounters from the book.

Battle Royale became a cultural phenomenon and is considered one of the most influential films in recent decades. It has been highly influential in global popular culture, so viewing the film is surely a must.

MANGA

In the 2000s the serializing of this manga based on the novel `Battle Royale` started along with the movie of the same work.

Thanks to the illustrator Masayuki Taguchi, Koushun was able to give graphical life to his previous work: a 15 tankobon (volumes) series was published over approximately 5 years.

Oddly despite the novel being rejected because of the thought of its controversy, the manga resulted in the ultimate form of the ‘Battle Royale’ gore and violence: it’s not strange to see very detailed scenes of dismembered bodies, rape, and other sorts of abuse in mangas in general.

An added value to this series is the deep background that Koushun was able to give for many of the characters that compose the storyline: here we don`t find many differences with the novel, but rather through the movie adaptation.

Still, to this day Battle Royal remains an amazing work that clearly shows us, human hate and boundaries of violence, as well as true and positive feelings. Battle Royale is for sure a gripping narrative, fulfilled in actuality. It is a benchmark monolith, and its influence will be there forever.

I didn't know S4 was where Cas came in - I'd made huge efforts over the years to avoid sp*ilers.

I saved Supernatural until this year because I wanted to be in the right headspace to watch it right through, start to finish, without a break. I suspected Castiel would float my boat based on what little I knew of the show's premise (and of myself when faced with Fictional Men Who Happen to Have Wings), and because I knew how good Misha Collins is at selling a role, but it turned out to be the overall story arc that prostrated me at the altar of Supernatural - the meta arc with Chuck dicking the Winchesters around, the destiny vs free will thing. I was breathless with anticipation between Chuck's appearance in The Monster at the End of This Book - the first explicit suggestion that the boys are part of some in-universe controlled narrative working against their attempts to exercise free will - and the eventual reveal that Chuck was, indeed, writer!God (and a monster).

I won't say the early seasons are my favourites - I don't share Kripke's love of visceral horror and splatty onscreen violence for one thing, and the cool film night scenes are practically black on my crappy TV for another, so I kept having to turn on audio-describe to know what was happening - but they're completely unmissable.

sejanus plinth: the name & what it says about fate vs. choice

sejanus plinth is the namesake of the roman solider, lucius aelius sejanus. i've seen many people question why suzanne collins would choose to name sejanus plinth after this historical figure, and i think her reasoning was rather clever. their similarities are few, but striking: both of them have fathers name strabo, both came from humble riches and both of them were eventually tried for treason. save for that, it seems everything about their narratives were different. i believe collins did this as a way to invite conversation surrounding the topic of destiny vs. choice.

like sejanus plinth, lucius aelius sejanus was born into opportunity because of his father, lucius seius strabo. the roman sejanus was born into the equestrian class, which was one of two upper classes in roman republic. the other class was the patricians. the equestrian class were beneath the patricians (much like how district two, while wealthy, was still seen as below the capital). lucius seius strabo distinguished himself by entering not one, but two, of the highest ranking positions that could be afforded to people in his class: the governor of egypt & praetorian prefect (the praetorian guard was, essentially, a unit of the roman army meant to bodyguard the emperor and their family, as well as watching over civilians). while there is much to be said about the parallels between the equestrian class and district 2--and how both worked to protect the higher class, while remaining nonthreatening to them-- that is a post for a later day.

unlike sejanus plinth, the roman sejanus grasped readily onto the opportunities his father, strabo, had gotten for him. on the back of his father's hard work, roman sejanus rose to power in the praetorian guard, eventually becoming one of the praetorian prefects, alongside his father. this is where the narratives of sejanus plinth and lucius aelius sejanus begin to greatly divide. though sejanus plinth had been readied to take over his father's empire from a young age (being taught how to shoot guns, being the sole heir), he did not take readily to the idea, especially when they were transferred to the capital. sejanus plinth did not see what was happening the capital as desirable, whereas lucius aelius sejanus found himself increasingly power hungry and he did wish to increase his ranking. eventually the roman sejanus outdid his father in his accomplishments. he gained the trust of the emperor tiberius and rose to the position of praetor--a ranking not usual for someone of his class background. this earned him enemies amongst the patrician class and the imperial family, with one of them being drusus julius caesar, the very son of emperor tiberius himself. drusus did not like sejanus because he was encroaching on his grounds, seemingly taking his position as his father's successor in everything but name. sejanus even went as far as trying to secure these ties by marrying his four year old daughter to one of tiberius' family members, but couldn't because the boy died. however, sejanus' ambition did not let him stop there. eventually he poisoned drusus slowly after seducing his wife and making a conspirator out of her. the slow nature of the death allowed it to be ruled natural causes.
