I have some money saved aside to complete a portion of my dental problems. but it turns out it's not even enough to have even one of the procedures I am wanting. I want two dental implants. I have significant dental pain for weeks on end almost every month, this is how the dentist explained it. She said the teeth I have left on my upper row of teeth were so misaligned / slanted in such a way that it was applying pressure to my gums, and the pressure happens every day so it starts causing pain and discomfort. I need so many root canals, and need to have a bunch of my wisdom teeth removed, and then they'll crown what they can and then give me dentures. I've always had crooked teeth and I have neglected my dental health a bit because of unrelenting poverty / just never had the time and a fear of the dentist. Feeling so anxious, scared because I don't know how painful all the procedures will be, I don't know what I can eat afterwards. I'm well out of my teen years, and I also feel ashamed. I'm planning to open a bunch of commissions next week to help cover the cost. I have a combination of very weak enamel and furious teeth grinding. The combination meant that my teeth were sheered down until the enamel was gone. I was down to just the dentin underneath, which means my teeth were only going to start eroding faster. Multiple dental providers were saying that I was on track for dentures by fifty. I was super cold sensitive on one side, and I had a tooth pulled on the other side due to a botched root canal, which meant there was no way to comfortably chew many types of food. It was affecting what I’d choose to eat, and buddy I do NOT need more obstacles to eating. And just aesthetics-wise, my teeth’s appearance didn’t bother me enough to pay this much just for them to look better, but I didn’t love that they were permanently yellow and that my face was losing height due to how small my teeth were.

(I’m convinced my prosthedontist and my dental surgeon were both more bothered by the aesthetics of my mouth than I was. My surgeon literally said, “I bet you were pretty insecure about your teeth before this, right?” And I was like “ummmm not really?“ and he was like “really? I mean good! But please understand they look so much better.”)

So I got gum surgery and a base for a dental implant installed several months ago, and now I’ve got temporary crowns in which are actually these connected blocks of teeth that I need special floss to take care of.

And tomorrow I get my permanent crowns which should look and feel like real teeth! And then after that I get fitted for a mouthguard to prevent me from wearing the new ones down to nubs as well. (You can use an over the counter mouth guard for grinding, which is what I was using while I was buying time to get my teeth fixed. I’m getting in custom fit in the hopes my jaw will be less sore when I wake up. Any mouthguard is better than no mouth guard if you’re a grinder though, trust me. Save yourself the enamel and the money.)

Speaking of money, I’ll be super blunt: in total, I paid about $8000 for the gum surgery and implant, and $36000 for almost entire mouth of new crowns (I’ve only got two original teeth left). Insurance covered a little over half the surgery fees and like $2k of the crowns. (My insurance will pay for up to 50% of the price of a crown every two years, and I need about twenty crowns all at once, so. Yeah.) I investigated going to Mexico or Canada to get the work done, but ultimately my dental situation is complicated enough to require coordination of multiple providers and regular check ups over many months. It was going to be to complicated to arrange that internationally, plus travel and lodgings, to be worth the diminishing amount of money I would save. I do think I could have gotten all this work done for cheaper, but I’m not sure if it actually would have been something I followed through on. And basically, the sooner I get this work done, the better in terms of face shape and teeth migration and all that, so I was like “fuck it let’s go,” so here we are. In twenty-four hours, I’ll have a brand new mouth.

I know just about every post on the subject says this, but- get your vaccines up to date. Buy yourself a nice TDaP from the CVS for Christmas. The Department of Health and Human Services (of which RFK Jr will have control) oversees the CDC and the FDA. While it would be unlikely he would go for an all-out ban on vaccines, he could make vaccines a hell of a lot more optional and refuse to approve new ones. Considering another goal of the administration is to repeal the ACA, that would mean childhood vaccinations would no longer be covered by private insurance (I was a child prior to the ACA and my mom paid $750 to get (fully insured) me vaccinated (about $1,638 in today's dollars). Meaning people will likely not be able to afford vaccines even if they wanted them. And a combination of expense + lack of mandate would mean a drastic reduction in the number of people who get vaccinated. While vaccines are less effective without community (herd) immunity, they are still great at keeping you from dying. So get them while they're available and covered.

Get your records. Download or request as many of your own medical records (and those of your children!) as you can. You can get most of your records through MyChart or other online portals. If you received medical care before electronic charting, you'll have to directly contact your hospital or clinic's records department to see if they can send you copies. Save them in hard copies in a binder or at least on a flash drive or disc you have the ability to read from a computer. This makes your medical care portable if you have to see a new doctor without a lot of time to plan.

If you're on more than one medication, have a "medication reconciliation" appointment with your doctor. Learn what meds you are on and know what each of them do. Call your pharmacy and learn how much they cost without insurance. Ask your doctor if there are any cheaper alternatives that treat the same things. In the case of an ACA repeal and loss of drug coverage, you're going to want to know so you can make an informed decision about which drugs you buy.

Get your mental health straightened out as much as possible. RFK Jr. has said things against antidepressants and other psych medications. While again, he's probably not going to ban them (Think of the lost productivity! Think of the pharmaceutical companies losing revenue!) he may make it hella difficult for new antidepressant meds to be approved.

Get on long-term birth control of you can get pregnant and don't want to be. The copper IUD is the longest lasting form of birth control and can prevent pregnancy for more than 10 years, but hormonal IUDs can last 7 or more. Each has their own side effects and benefits. You can always get it removed later if you change your mind, but getting access to birth control might become difficult.

Have any semi-elective procedures done ASAP. At least get them scheduled. If the ACA is repealed you may not qualify for health insurance and you really don't want to have to pay for a surgery out of pocket. Plus, if the FDA becomes less reliable, you're going to want any tools or implants used in that surgery to still be safe.

Get new glasses. If you have vision insurance, get a new pair of glasses (not contacts) now with your most up-to-date prescription.

Get any dental work you've been putting off done if you currently have dental insurance. Get a cleaning and any preventative care done you need too.

He looks at it from all angles, trying to, as Ford says, use the "Scientific Method" to figure out what he's holding. It has a rubber end that kind of looks like his sippy cup, but it's more bendy. And it has fishies all over the hard part of it. Stan still doesn't know what it is, so he holds it up to Ford and cocks his head, silently asking for help.

"It's a pacifier, Lee! We both know you have a bit of a chewing and gumming problem when you take your dentures out, leaving drool stains," here Ford points to Stan, who has his sweater in his mouth. He lets it drop and covers the drool stain with his sleeve and a blush warming his face, "and we won't be back in Gravity Falls for a few more months now to get your-anyways," Ford quickly averts around the subject of the dentist and Stan's impending dental implant appointment, no use to make him upset and fussy now. He gets lost in the soothing motions of sucking and chewing, mumbling slightly as he feels six-fingered hands help him up and into a lap. He's handed Poindexter, wrapping his arms tightly around his friend. Stan sighs as he feels Sixer rock him, he must be sitting in the rocking chair they found in the Shack's storage room, because the rocking feels so smooth and easy.

So hi, folks.

I'm facing a pretty large dentist bill due to breaking a tooth and some other damage. It broke too badly to repair, so I have to have it removed and replaced with an implant. The alternate options aren't great for me for various reasons. (In addition I need several fillings and a crown. I put off needing a crown last year due to my insurance not covering crowns at all, and now I'm missing a tooth and things are worse, of course.)

I'm also having surgery on my foot in a few weeks to correct a lingering injury from a car accident (not my fault) last year and that's going to put my off my feet for a few months, so interfering with my ability to run my small business that I use to supplement my partner's income, on which I'm totally dependent as a disabled person with no disability income (because I was married before I became disabled.)

I'm not in a total emergency situation because I've qualified for some financing so I can have more time to repay the bill, but I'm having to put off some of the dental work until January to get more dental coverage. We do have insurance but it only covers $1500/year. And you know if you have serious issues, that's nothing. The original total they gave me was over $7000, though I think I've gotten that down by putting some stuff off and I've signed up with an additional discount plan to take up when my dental insurance runs out.

(Did you know that a lot of the worth of dental insurance is that it gets you discounted prices with in-network dentists, but after you use up your alloted benefit for the year, you DON'T get those discounts? Unless you have a discount plan without limit. Which you can just go buy for like $100/year but they don't TELL you this. THE MORE YOU KNOW.)

Am I the asshole for resenting my father after he forced me into braces?

For context I am seventeen now but was forced into braces at twelve years old. While I did have very crooked teeth, I never wanted braces, my teeth never caused me any sort of physical pain or insecurity. I told him as much before I was put into braces. But he refused to hear it.

As far as I'm aware braces were not a medical necessity for me.

I've repeatedly tried to discuss it with him but he always tells me that he has a good insurance, one that covers dental care for all children under the age of twenty one and that I should be grateful. He also told me that if he didn't make me get braces I would be angry and upset with him when I turn twenty one.

I tell him that that's not true, that it's my body and I should have a say in the matter but he only says that he's doing what's best for me and refuses to discuss it any further.

What's worse is that each appointment is a drive that's an hour and a half away from where I live—they aren't open on weekends or evenings—so every appointment (once a month) I have to miss at least half of a school day (but usually it ends up being a full day of school) even if the appointment itself is only fifteen minutes. We do have a local orthodontist but my father refuses to take me there because he thinks the guy who runs the place is money hungry.

Anyway, I'll be getting my braces off in a few months. The orthodontic team has made an entire treatment plan for me—one that involves me wearing a retainer 24/7, indefinitely. And later getting implants. I don't want to follow this treatment plan and I don't like that it was made without me ever being asked how I feel about it.

I've told other people about it, and they've said that I'm making a fuss about nothing and that parents have the right to decide what's best for thier children. But I'm not a child anymore.

I know he was doing what he thought was best but I secretly resent my father for putting me in braces when I didn't want them. I think the fact that he never took my wishes into account or asked me how I felt makes him a bad parent. But maybe I'm overreacting.

Ahmed is only 14 years old, living in Gaza with his family. He has genetic deformities impacting the growth of his teeth and hair. Though he's received recommendations to get dental implants, those are very expensive, and his family cannot afford them, so he's lived in pain for a very long time

And now, due to the ongoing genocide, Ahmed and his family have been displaced multiple times, and they are living under very difficult conditions. He needs to leave Gaza to get medical treatment, but the costs are very high. So he set up a fundraiser to cover the price. At the time of me writing this post, Ahmed's gofundme is only at €2,711/€50,000. Please help by sharing his campaign, and donating to it if you can. He is very young, and doesn't deserve to be in pain
