“you should get some rest, kid.” [ lean ] sender rests their head on receiver's shoulder
Oscar Delancey + Morris Delancey ;; Set after the fight at Newsie Square ;; Morris is older than Osc by about a year ;; @delancey-asks
Tumblr media
Bloody knuckles. Jesus fuck did they hurt. Oscar sat with his back against the bed he'd been in ever since he was a young kid that was dropped off at his uncle's terrible place. He was looking at it with one eye, the other being a black eye and difficult to open without hissing out in some sort of pain. He remained silent, staring straight at the ground between his two feet, his boots being off and his mind remaining at it's quickened pace. The next time he'd get his hands on Jack, it wouldn't be a pretty sight, yet a much more bloodied one. He'd murder Jack if he could.
He had to get away from that stupid fight no matter what. He just had to. He didn’t leave Morris behind, but he did run when the bulls had bega to officially show up. Himself and his older brother didn’t have any good connections with the law, especially when the two were younger, right before their teenage years leading up to where they were now. A low sigh and huff would escape the younger boy, his eyes closing eventually. He was processing it all. How himself and his brother had managed to not kick the ass of any of the newsies. Well, they sure as hell had gotten some of them. The blonde, Race, they got him. At least he knew his brother did.
Speaking of his brother, the sound of someone pushing open the door was something that didn’t even make Oscar lift his head. Just the pure born silence was it. There was the remaining silence before the younger had noticed Morris sit beside him. “...your knuckles are bleeding, stupid.” Morris’s voice would ring through the cold air, the feeling of the older boys calloused fingers taking a hold of his hands. “I’m fine, Morris. I always am.” The younger's voice was partially cold, shaking his head right after. He knew he wasn’t fine. But Oscar despised help sometimes. Let alone from the man he idolized. He idolized Morris. The boy who would protect him from all harm and everything of the sort.
“No, you ain’t, Oscar.” The older would speak against the younger's protests, letting go of the shorter boy's hands. He had pulled the shorter up, not as forceful as he would to a newsie. Morris would be much more forceful and harsh with those stupid kids. Sure, he was a year or so younger, but the violence he held in the back of his mind always remained when it came to the newsies. If he had the chance, they’d all be stuck in that stupid refuge. At least one of them was though. The one with the limp. Though as he pulled his brother along, of course, Oscar would protest. “Morris, I can take care of myself-!” He’d complain, trying to get out of his older brother's hold.
Yet the attempt didn’t work in Oscar’s favor, as he was eventually tugged to the bathroom. “Sit.” Morris would grumble under his breath, yet it was still audible to the younger boy. Oscar didn’t exactly have a choice as he sat on the edge of the bath, looking down at his knuckles. They were aching like a bitch, that was something he wouldn’t hesitate to admit at all. “You gotta’ be more careful, Osc.” Morris would start to speak, searching for bandages in the mirror’s cabinets. “You shoulda’ let me handle the tougher and older ones.” He’d continue, taking out bandages from the cabinet. “Didn’t want you getting hurt.. Took them for you.” The younger one commented from the bathtub’s edge.
“Oscar. We’ve been brothers our whole life. I’ve been taking the hits for you since dad started to drink. You realize I’d risk my life for you to be safe, yeah?” Morris questioned as he gently took the younger boys hands again, gently tugging him once more. “Ow-.. Careful, stupid.” Oscar grumbled, hissing out in pain slightly at sudden movements close to where his knuckles had been. He’d hear his brother muter a quick sorry, before the sound of water had been all he could hear. “Wash your hands.” Morris would speak up, moving out of Oscar’s way, who only held a confused look. “It’ll hurt.” The younger grumbled, earning an eye roll. “Yeah, I know it will. But it’ll help clean the debris out of the wound.”
Even if Oscar didn’t want to hiss out in pain constantly, he listened to his older brother's suggestion, cleaning his hands thoroughly with soap and water, hissing out in pain every couple seconds or so. “Fucking-” Oscar would hiss out, going to move his hands away from the sink. The soap didn’t help at all, it was KILLING him to do this. “Couple more seconds, Osc. Then after the bleeding stops, rinse em.” His older brother would explain calmly, leaning against the wall just besides the door. He was making sure his brother was okay, something his father and uncle couldn’t even do. Now that Morris thought about it, the two had nobody that cared about each other. Nobody but theirselves.
“We got tweezers or anythin, Mor?” Oscar would ask as the taller boy had gotten a soft feeling cloth, knowing how the scratchy and uncomfortable feeling ones would annoy the younger boy. “Yeah, yeah. Just- let me do this real quick, okay? Then I’ll get everything else out and wrap it up. Got some stuff to put onto it too.” Morris would explain, focusing his attention on what he’d been doing, gently cleaning the skin around his brothers now sliiightly less bloodied knuckles. Of course, Oscar would hiss out in pain and let out curses of who knows what, but Morris didn’t stop him. “There ya go, let ‘em all out, Osc. I ain’t gonna stop ya.” Morris would mutter aloud to his brother, who continued on with the cursing before being gently pushed down back onto the edge of the bathtub.
Morris would grow quiet as he eventually would search for the tweezers, searching the same place the bandages were in. “Alright, you trust me enough to do the whole tweezer thing?” He questioned the younger, earning the slow nod from Oscar before he’d take Oscar’s hand into his, beginning to get to work taking out dirt and everything of the sort out of his brothers knuckles. “Ow, ow, ow-! Jesus, fuck!” Oscar complained, hissing out in pain every once and a while. Morris wouldn’t reply, allowing the other to squeeze his wrist or arm. It was a little bit before the older brother would talk once more, standing to his feet. “There we go. Dump it in the trash. I got to put the ointment and the bandages on, okay?” He didn’t want to hurt his younger brother any more than he already had been.
“. . . Yeah. Got it. Just be careful. Shit hurts enough.” Oscar’s tone had grown slightly harsh, but he didn’t mean to. He was tired, getting frustrated and in pain. “Ain’t gotta tell me twice.” Morris would respond to his brother's harsh tone, his eyes rolling slightly. He’d been used to harsh tones almost all his life, just letting it happen. It’s not like they were going to fight, both boys were too tired for it. “Here, hold the bandages.” Morris would hum, beginning to put the ointment onto his brother's hands whilst humming a tune their mother would sing to either of them before they’d fall asleep. Morris remembered it more than Oscar had most of the time. Though a comment from the younger made a small smile form on Morris’s face. “You’re singing mom’s song..”
Morris would merely hum in response to his brother's comment, continuing to hum the tune as he carefully put the ointment onto his brother's knuckles, which merely led to more hisses of pain. “You’re okay, Osc. Just gotta bandage them now.” His voice remained soft, Morris not daring to get all snappy at his brother. He took the bandages from the shorter and younger, beginning to wrap the gauze bandages around the now cleaner wounds. “Here we go… just…” Morris spoke to himself whilst fixing the bandages, eventually moving the bandages away and going back to the cabinet. “Go get changed, Osc. I know we both need sleep.” He mumbled out to the younger now, who merely nodded his head and headed towards the two’s shared room.
It took Morris a while to come out of the bathroom and to relax on the bed his brother had sat back on. He held a calm expression, tired. He knew he’d have to take care of his younger brother, but he’d do anything for the kid. Morris closed his eyes, just for a quick second, but he felt something hit his shoulder. Opening his right eye, he noticed his younger brother leaning his head against the oldest shoulder. “...you should get some rest, kid.” He’d comment softly, wrapping his arm around his baby brother's shoulder, who only hummed a noise of protest in response. “...that’s what I’m trying to do, dumbass..” Oscar would grumble out in response, keeping his eyes closed. Morris would hum out, nodding his head slightly, remaining still so his brother could sleep. “Alright, alright… love ya, Osc..” He didn’t often say that, but he did notice that a smile seemed to form onto his brother’s face. “Love you too, Mor. “

#OTD in 1920 – War of Independence | The Burning of Cork.
The Burning of Cork is the name commonly given to a devastating series of fires that swept through the centre of Cork City on the night of 11th December 1920. The burning and the subsequent controversy is one of the most significant events of the Irish War of Independence. During the War of Independence, Cork was one of the main centres of IRA activity. On the day of the fire, a soldier was…

Tom Ward remembering John Gregory😢
‘He was without doubt the best spook who ever served the County, and a truly good and honest man. Even at an advanced age, he was fit and fearless, and his sense of duty was incredibly strong. He was more than willing to give his life if necessary. He’s buried in the garden at Chipenden. I miss him. Very much.’

𝐈’𝐋𝐋 𝐃𝐈𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐘𝐎𝐔 - DIAL DRUNK
Another story on the Delancey’s!? Woah!! I was listening to the song and thought the chorus awfully sounded like something Oscar would hum.. so I made this! Enjoy!!
Tumblr media
I’M REMEMBERING .
I PROMISED TO FORGET YOU NOW.
AND IT’S RAININ’ AND I’M CALLIN’ DRUNK.
Oscar didn’t mean for it to get this bad. He promised Morris it wouldn’t get this bad again, but it did. He was turning into their father. Badly. Oscar sat outside of Jacobi’s, his head pounding. He didn’t mean for any of this to happen. Really, he didn’t. Oscar wasn’t a bad kid, but the idiots he’d dealt with, all the newsies, would say otherwise. Say how he was a terrible person, how he couldn’t count to twenty. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t get an education. He had to self-teach everything but self defense. He learnt self-defense with his older brother back in the refuge, or right before they had left the farm. Now that far he couldn’t remember, but he wishes he did. Pushing himself up off the cold concrete of the ground, the black haired boy began to wobble his way far from Jacobi’s, just walking. Walking where? Oscar didn’t have a place in his mind. It was raining. Of course it was.
It just always had to rain in New York. It made Oscar let out a noise of complaint, his eyes narrowed with annoyance. He searched his pockets for anything, anything to help him sober up. Though whatever he took, it’d only drown out the perspective of his brother, so it wasn’t any of his fault. He wasn’t honest, he knew that. Nor was he half the man he used to be. He doubted it, and would forget about it, whatever. To him, it was all the same anyway. Now, as he walked, a soft sigh would escape him. He’s trying to keep himself calm, make his way towards home. Wherever that was right now. He stumbled, practically hugging himself now. To say he wasn’t proud of the punches that he threw, in the name of someone he no longer knew. He was young, drunk and alone, the loud whistles and annoying radio. Oscar hated when the bulls had shown up, putting him in the carriage.
“Where are you staying, son?” The voice of the officer questioned aloud, looking at Oscar with narrowed eyes, but the boy didn’t want to answer. He didn’t even want to answer the cops. Who would? Especially if they found out who he was. After a couple seconds of silence from the younger boy, he’d answer. “Staying with Morris Delancey and Jackson Wiesel.” He’d grumble out, his eyes closed. He was shivering in that seat, his teeth chattering against one another. Oscar thought his brother would kill ‘em for getting like this. Phones didn’t exist, and if they did, it was the annoying ones. The speaker to your ear, the other piece to your mouth. That’s why Oscar preferred letters. It was better than nothing. If Morris didn’t take him in, the cops knew he was wrong. One thing Oscar knew for sure though? He’d dial drunk, he'd die a drunk, but he'd die for his brother.
I’M UNTETHERING FROM PARTS OF ME YOU’D RECOGNIZE.
FROM CHARMING TO ALARMING IN SECONDS.
He was bedridden. But, Oscar would let the pain metastasize. Though, that’d be in the morning, he’ll forget it. The dial tone was all that he had, not like it was important. He already got a lecture from Morris earlier that night, when he had gotten home. But this cycle would repeat. As soon as he got up, he was already making his way back to Jacobi’s. All the way back there. All the way back there to drink some more. To get tipsy, to get everything all settled and done with. He’d be fine. Oscar was always fine. He thought so, at least. To say he was like his father was a jab to the heart with a knife. He knew how disappointed Morris would be. Of course Morris would be disappointed in him. Oscar was a horrible person, but he didn’t have much of a choice. After all, their father was a terrible man. An alcoholic who couldn’ handle his liquor.
Oscar knew that well. The amount of times he’s heard or seen the fights that his parents would get into after their father would drink and get all red. Those nights were torture. But this night was just like the previous. Drinking in Jacobi’s and then stumbling his way back home. As if he’d get there like this. Public intoxication was a bitch, he didn’t want to deal with it, but it wasn’t like there was anyone around. Jacobi wouldn’t mind if he stayed for a little bit, riiiight? As he walked, thoughts would appear into his head again. How he wasn’t proud of the punches he threw when it came to Snyder or even the newsies. Yet it was always in the name of someone he no longer knew. Right now as he walked, he was young, drunk, and alone. And again, the loud whistles and the shitty radio.
When the bulls had come, he didn’t like the way they would throw him in the carriage, but he would give Morris’s name as the emergency person. Of course he’d give his brother's name. Saying Wiesel’s would result in hell. After all, the bulls didn’t like Morris, Wiesel or himself at this point. He didn’t expect anything to happen, other than to be dropped off at home and lectured by his brother. That’s not what happened. They went a whole different way. The cops would think Morris was wrong for not opening the door, and in Oscar’s eyes he was. Yet… the younger couldn’t blame his brother for not opening the door to him. This drinking was getting constant. Whenever they’d get money. Oscar needed to stop, but he couldn’t. Not now, not ever. He’d never blame Morris, even if the older took it upon themselves to. Whilst still awake, Oscar’s eyes had widened when noticing where the hell he was going. The refuge.
Not again, not this wretched place again. Oscar would rather die than be in this hellhole again. This time he was alone. He couldn’t be alone, not here. Placing his hands on the bar that separated the carriage driver from the back of it, he tried to convince the man as well as he could. “I beg you, sir! Just let me out!” His voice was bound to break. Oscar couldnt’ cry. No, god no. Not with some random prick. “I’ll give you my blood alcohol!” He wouldn’t give up with the convicing. He wanted to go home. This would convince him to stop drinking. Oscar’s still a kid, he’s seventeen. He didn’t belong in the refuge, nor did he belong in jail. Let him go home and he’ll be okay. Back in the comfort of his brother. “I’ll rot with all the burnouts in the cell! Hell, I’ll even change my faith, I’ll praise the flag!” He begged, closing his eyes and leaning his head against the cold bars.
“Son, are you a danger to yourself?” The driver then would ask, resulting in Oscar’s eyes to grow cold and pissed now. Leaning back in his seat and using his feet to try kicking at the door, the boys tone was now colder. “Fuck that sir! Just let me out!” His voice grew louder as well, he was getting more prone to violence the longer he was in this stupid carriage. “I’ll give you my blood alcohol! I’ll rot with all them burnouts in the cells!” He would rather spend twenty minutes in a room with a murderer than be locked in a cell. Let alone with someone he doesn’t even know. The refuge beds were uncomfortable, the most annoying thing ever. “I’ll change my faith, I’ll kiss the badge!” He knew his brother couldn’t bail him out. The driver would roll his eyes with annoyance. “Son, why do you do this to yourself?” At that question, Oscar let out a yell, kicking open the carriage door and hopping out. Even if it was moving.
He wasn’t going to the refuge. Running now, as fast as he could, the ravenette was putting all the adrenaline in his bones to use. “I ain’t proud of all the punches that I’ve thrown!” He called out, running down main streets, even if they were empty or people were in his way. “In the name of someone I no longer know!” For the shame of being young, drunk, and alone! The annoying sound of loud whistles and radios. “I DON’T LIKE IT WHEN YOU THREW ME IN THE CARRIAGE!” He’d always give Morris’ name as his emergency person. Brother, it rang and rang, even the cops knew he was wrong for hanging up. He’d dial drunk, he’d die a drunk, he’d die for him.

Only You Know and Everyone Knows: Bonnie Bramlett Turns 80
Delaney won’t be there, as he’s no longer living. But it’s safe to assume Bonnie’s friends will turn out for the singer’s 80th birthday.
The Bonnie in question is Bramlett and she reaches the milestone today, Oct. 8, 1944.
She rose to fame in the late 1960s as the second namesake leader of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. And what Friends they boasted: Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Dave Mason, Leon Russell and Rita Coolidge to name just a few.
“I was wowed from the first moment I saw her perform … I mean, that voice, that charisma, that soul; she filled that whole room,” Mason said of Bramlett in 2021.
“She’s one of those raw, mega-talents that left me practically speechless, but not without the words to say, ‘Yes’ to joining the band.”
The Blamletts’ marriage - like their group - was a firecracker and quickly exploded. Bonnie went on to a solo career and working as a background singer for Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, the Allman Brothers Band and others.
And while Bramlett never again reached the highs of D&B&F, those who experienced it never forgot.
“You are a north star to many, including me,” Mason said.

free online james baldwin stories, essays, videos, and other resources
**edit
James baldwin online archive with his articles and photo archives.
---NOVELS---
Giovanni's room"When David meets the sensual Giovanni in a bohemian bar, he is swept into a passionate love affair. But his girlfriend's return to Paris destroys everything. Unable to admit to the truth, David pretends the liaison never happened - while Giovanni's life descends into tragedy. This book introduces love's fascinating possibilities and extremities."
Go Tell It On The Mountain"(...)Baldwin's first major work, a semi-autobiographical novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves."
+bonus: film adaptation on youtube. (if you’re a giancarlo esposito fan, you’ll be delighted to see him in an early preacher role)
Another Country and Going to Meet the Man Another country: "James Baldwin's masterly story of desire, hatred and violence opens with the unforgettable character of Rufus Scott, a scavenging Harlem jazz musician adrift in New York. Self-destructive, bad and brilliant, he draws us into a Bohemian underworld pulsing with heat, music and sex, where desperate and dangerous characters betray, love and test each other to the limit." Going to meet the Man: " collection of eight short stories by American writer James Baldwin. The book, dedicated "for Beauford Delaney", covers many topics related to anti-Black racism in American society, as well as African-American–Jewish relations, childhood, the creative process, criminal justice, drug addiction, family relationships, jazz, lynching, sexuality, and white supremacy."
Just Above My Head"Here, in a monumental saga of love and rage, Baldwin goes back to Harlem, to the church of his groundbreaking novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, to the homosexual passion of Giovanni's Room, and to the political fire that enflames his nonfiction work. Here, too, the story of gospel singer Arthur Hall and his family becomes both a journey into another country of the soul and senses--and a living contemporary history of black struggle in this land."
If Beale Street Could Talk"Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin's story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions-affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche."
also has a film adaptation by moonlight's barry jenkins
Tell Me How Long the Train's been gone At the height of his theatrical career, the actor Leo Proudhammer is nearly felled by a heart attack. As he hovers between life and death, Baldwin shows the choices that have made him enviably famous and terrifyingly vulnerable. For between Leo's childhood on the streets of Harlem and his arrival into the intoxicating world of the theater lies a wilderness of desire and loss, shame and rage. An adored older brother vanishes into prison. There are love affairs with a white woman and a younger black man, each of whom will make irresistible claims on Leo's loyalty.
---ESSAYS---
Baldwin essay collection. Including most famously: notes of a native son, nobody knows my name, the fire next time, no name in the street, the devil finds work- baldwin on film
--DOCUMENTARIES--
Take this hammer, a tour of san Francisco.
Meeting the man
--DEBATES:--
Debate with Malcolm x, 1963 ( on integration, the nation of islam, and other topics. )
Debate with William Buckley, 1965. ( historic debate in america. )
Heavily moderated debate with Malcolm x, Charles Eric Lincoln, and Samuel Schyle 1961. (Primarily Malcolm X's debate on behalf of the nation of islam, with Baldwin giving occassional inputs.)

yourusername words cannot express how much i love you. every single time i think that this is it, i cannot possibly love you more than i do, i'm surprised by myself because i do. i really do. i fall in love with you more and more every single day and i'm gonna spend the rest of my life showing you that. i loved you when you first told me that you really liked my smile and i loved you when you told me you hoped i lived nearer to you and then asked me to move in. i loved you when you took the time to get to know me and i loved you when you said that i was it for you and i will love you when our hair is turning gray and we're gonna look back and smile and fall in love even more. they're gonna have to kick us out of those nursing homes i swear. i truly cannot wait to look back on our life together, cardboard boxes full of our love, but until then, let's live it. here's to my forever love, my everything, my world. i love you ❤️

charles_leclerc i honestly don't know what to say. you're my biggest dream, my wife and now that i'm saying it, it sounds so surreal. i have waiting been an entire lifetime to say these words and the fact that it's you in this lifetime (and all the others), is just amazing. i wish i had known you sooner, so that i wouldn't have to spend all those years looking for love in places where it couldn't possibly be. my love for you reached my past and before you came into my life, i missed you so bad. i hope that one day, when we're old and aged and have seen a thousand sunsets, you ask me if i love you and my answer will forevermore will be always, evermore, even after and still.

'…Paul McCartney was such a fan of Dominic Behan’s ‘Liverpool Lou’ that he recorded it with the Scaffold'
(Liverpool - Wondrous Place by Paul Du Noyer, 2002; Part (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V), (VI), (VII), (VIII), (IX), (X), (XI), (XII), (XIII), (XIV), (XV), (XVI), (XVII), (XVIII), (XIX), (XX), (XXI), (XXII)
Q: “Liverpool Lou” was another massive hit for The Scaffold. That is linked with the recording of the McGear album. A: It was. The BBC telly wanted The Scaffold to do a sketch with the actress, Rita Tushingham and Derek Guyler. They said “Can you sing the song for us? I couldn’t come up with a song. I was working with our kid and Wings in Strawberry and said “Have you got any ideas for a Scaffold song? I’m doing this telly.” He said “Oh, you wanna do Liverpool Lou.” I said “No, it is too folky, too Spinners.” He said “No, just listen to it.” It was very old and had been around for centuries in Liverpool. I had forgotten how it went and certainly didn’t know the words. I said to BBC telly people “Could you get me a song called Liverpool Lou?” They sent me two versions. One was by Dominic Beehan and the other was by Delaney and Bonnie. Scaffold tried to trad arrange ‘Liverpool Lou’ but Dominic Beehan had got to it before us and copyrighted it. He got all the writing credits and all of the money for Liverpool Lou. The other version by Delaney and Bonnie was absolute magic. Our kid heard those two opposites and said “You want to go in the middle there.” He did it, he made that song. That is just Wings with in the middle of ‘Liverpool Lou’, a 10CC gizmo. That’s the weird sound in the middle. Q:The Godley and Creme invention. A: That’s right. It’s hard to play but I think our kid played it. Norm Yardley does the gob iron on Liverpool Lou, I was with him the other night. Nice track.
(Mike McCartney / McGear – The Strange Brew, 2016)
Scaffold’s latest single ‘Liverpool Lou’ released on May 3rd on the Warner Bros. Label. Record No. K 16400. It’s an old song, credited to Brendan Behan’s brother, Dominic. Paul produced and arranged it. In the middle there’s a gizmo solo, it’s a new instrument invented by Lol Creme and Kevin of 10CC, who partly own ‘Strawberry Studios’. There are only two gizmos in the world.
(From Wings Fun Club newsletter N°1, 1974)
Oh Liverpool Lou, lovely Liverpool Lou Why don't you behave just like other girls do? Oh why must my poor heart keep following you Stay home and love me, my Liverpool Lou When love is pleasing, and love is teasing And love is a pleasure, when first it is new love And as it grows it older, and love it grows colder And that fades away, love, like the morning dew <…> When I go out walking, I hear people talking School children playing, I know what they're saying They're saying you'll grieve me, that you'll deceive me Some morning you'll leave me all packed up and gone <…> Sounds from the river Keep telling me ever That I should forget you Like I never met you Please tell me their songs of Was never more wrong, love Please say I've been gone, love To my Liverpool Lou
Another song where Paul used a Gizmo - I’m Carrying
McCartney originally recorded the song accompanied by just his acoustic guitar during the London Town sessions aboard the stern of the yacht Fair Carol in the Virgin Islands on 5 May 1977. In December 1977, he overdubbed orchestral strings and he also overdubbed his own playing of an electric guitar using a Gizmo. The Gizmo is a device invented by 10cc members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, which allows a guitar to be played by vibrating the strings rather than plucking them. (x)
By dawn's first light I'll come back to your room again With my carnation hidden by the packages I'm carrying, something I'm carrying something for you Ah, long time no see baby, sure has been a while And if my reappearance lacks a sense of style I'm carrying, something I'm carrying something for you I'm carrying I'm carrying, can't help it I'm carrying I'm carrying something for you
People say, ‘What does this song mean?’ and I say, ‘Well, it’s up to you.’ It can mean a million things. What am I carrying here? I kind of make it clear that it’s packages. So I’m like Dapper Dan, with my carnation hidden by the packages. I’m bringing presents for you, I’m carrying something for you, but also, when a woman is having a baby, she’s carrying. There are a couple of other meanings that rule themselves out. One is carrying a gun. Another is carrying drugs. One meaning that might have a little traction is the idea of one person ‘carrying’ a band, with the others riding on the coattails. I’m not even sure about that. I’m just playing with the word ‘carrying’. It’s a very ambiguous little song, but that was the sort of freedom of Wings, to do something a little bit ambiguous. It’s been suggested that this song sounds Lennon-esque. I’d admit to it if it were, but to me it sounds more McCartney-esque: just the little voice. I couldn’t imagine John doing quite such a little voice. But you know, if it’s seen as Lennon-esque, that’s no great problem. We did learn how to write songs together, after all.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021)
The Tuesday and Wednesday sessions [February 18-19, 1975, New Orleans when John didn'tt come] were spent fleshing out ‘Spirits of Ancient Egypt.’ Paul added Moog and Gizmo guitar, Linda recorded synthesized string swells, Joe added gong at the start of the track, and Alan O’Duffy recorded the sound of a telephone busy signal, to be used at the end of the song. Finally, the whole band, plus O’Duffy, gathered around a microphone to overdub the song’s rich vocal harmonies.
(The McCartney Legacy: Volume 2: 1974-1980 by Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair, 2024)
We knew George Melly from Liverpool. George was a very posh Liverpudlian, and he used to be the vocalist with a band called the Merseysippi Jazz Band. He was a very nice man, flamboyant, slightly eccentric. He had a big collection of paintings by René Magritte, the Belgian surrealist. In the seventies I was very into surrealism too, and Magritte in particular. It goes some way to explain the wacky nature of some of these songs. I always thought I didn’t do quite enough with the title. ‘Spirits of Ancient Egypt’ could have been intriguing and mystical, yet I somehow went the opposite way. ‘You’re my baby / And I love you / You can take a pound of love / And cook it in the stew.’ There are very lyrical moments ‘Spirits of ancient Egypt / Shadows of ancient Rome’ . . . ‘Echoes of sunken Spain’ – all great epic legends, but then set against those moments you’ve got just a love song. It’s the ordinary pitched against the extraordinary.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, 2021)
<…> I'm your baby do you love me? I can drive a cadillac* across the Irish sea – but when I've finished doing that I know where I'll want to be Cos I'm your baby, and you love me. Spirits of ancient Egypt Shadows of ancient Rome Spirits of ancient Egypt hung on the telly hung on the telly hung on the telephone…. <…> Spirits of Ancient Egypt Echoes of sunken Spain Spirits of ancient Egypt Hung on the phone – a –hung on the Phone a-hung on the phone …again… **
*Cadillac - first association - Elvis' gold-plated Cadillac ("We’d once heard that Elvis Presley had sent his gold-plated Cadillac on tour, and we thought that was just brilliant. So we thought, ‘We’ll make a record, and that’ll be our gold-plated Cadillac.’" - in The Lyrics)
Also it's funny: I'm your baby <…>I can drive Cadillac - Baby you can drive my car
**a telephone busy signal = Call Me Back Again (was written in the spring of 1974 in Los Angeles after reconnecting with John, recorded 3 and 6 February 1975 in New Orleans: February 6 John phoned Sea Saint Studio and told Paul that he had moved back to the Dakota on February 3)
And the fact that Yoko Ono selected 'Liverpool Lou' on Desert Island Discs in 2007 as the song John had sung to Sean as a lullaby: 'Her third pick was the Irish poet Dominic Behan’s ‘Liverpool Lou’ which was a lullaby. Introduced to the song by Lennon, Ono reminiscence, “I don’t know why but one day John, in England, sang ‘Liverpool Lou’ and said ‘Isn’t that beautiful?’… And when Sean was born, he would just sing this song until Sean went to sleep almost every night.”'
