Marcus Miller and Ms Lisa Fischer performing “Superstar”.
Previously posted Bonnie Bramlett’s performance of this song. ________________________ Superstar Songwriters: Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett
Long ago and oh so far away I fell in love with you before the second show Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear But you're not really here It's just the radio
[Chorus:] Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby You said you'd be coming back this way again baby Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you I really do
Loneliness is such a sad affair And I can hardly wait to be with you again
What to say to make you come again Come back to me again And play your sad guitar

Only You Know and Everyone Knows: Bonnie Bramlett Turns 80
Delaney won’t be there, as he’s no longer living. But it’s safe to assume Bonnie’s friends will turn out for the singer’s 80th birthday.
The Bonnie in question is Bramlett and she reaches the milestone today, Oct. 8, 1944.
She rose to fame in the late 1960s as the second namesake leader of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. And what Friends they boasted: Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Dave Mason, Leon Russell and Rita Coolidge to name just a few.
“I was wowed from the first moment I saw her perform … I mean, that voice, that charisma, that soul; she filled that whole room,” Mason said of Bramlett in 2021.
“She’s one of those raw, mega-talents that left me practically speechless, but not without the words to say, ‘Yes’ to joining the band.”
The Blamletts’ marriage - like their group - was a firecracker and quickly exploded. Bonnie went on to a solo career and working as a background singer for Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, the Allman Brothers Band and others.
And while Bramlett never again reached the highs of D&B&F, those who experienced it never forgot.
“You are a north star to many, including me,” Mason said.

Tribute albums come in all shapes and sizes as we have seen in our discussions on what they actually suggest, but a couple of them cause me to question their true motives. For instance, If I Were A Carpenter seems to me like a joke. Again, this might be my view, though there is something off about the whole enterprise. Sure, the musicians are all game, but are they pulling your leg? Sonic Youth, for instance, do an intriguing 90's alternative rock version of the piece made famous by The Carpenters, but you keep thinking they have their tongues in their cheeks. One can sense some reverence, though the period causes us to ask many things, such as – would anyone on the platter have dared to play the hits of the Carpenters outside this tribute?

♫ You Really Got A Hold On Me ♫ (Redux)
I didn’t think I would do a music post tonight, since the cat, Tiger Lily, broke my @#$% headphones earlier!  She somehow managed to get tangled in the wire that goes from the phones to my laptop and snapped the headphones right in two!  But then, I figured out that they still work … they just won’t sit on my head, so I have to hold each ear piece up to the respective ears, but in a pinch ……

"Superstar" is a song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell in 1969, performed by various artists but by far the most popular version was recorded by the Carpenters in February 1971.
Rita Coolidge came up with the original song idea, based on observing the relationships of female groupies with rock stars in the late 1960s; in its first recorded incarnation, the song was called "Groupie (Superstar)" by Delaney & Bonnie.
Richard Carpenter became aware of the song after watching Bette Midler sing it on the February 15, 1971 edition of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and quickly obtained a recording to play for his sister Karen. Intrigued, they both thought they could put a new spin on it; Because the original subject matter of the song was more risqué than was typical for them, Richard changed a lyric in the second verse from "And I can hardly wait/To sleep with you again" to the less suggestive "And I can hardly wait/To be with you again." Karen was very moved by the idea and mood of the song, and laid down her haunting vocals in a single take.
Her version of the song was widely praised for its intensity and emotional nature.  The duo decided to include it in their next album Carpenters. The single quickly climbed the charts to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US but was unable to dislodge Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" from the top spot.
