I just finished season 9 last night. Dean's voice gets deeper and deeper than the blue ocean of Castiel's eyes. There are two possibilities here:

1. Jensen was really invested in demonstrate the idea of Dean drastically changing because of the mark of Cain.

2. I think at this point, in Cockles history, they started to share clothes and several items of jewelry. Jackles wanted for Dean to share something in common with his angel.

But Cas and Dean don't even fuckin' care. They're perfectly fine with being being assumed "oaf" or "brain-dead puppy." Sometimes they even lean into that assumption to get the upper hand.
