Pre-hell Dean would've embarrassed himself so hard if they'd met Castiel back then. Ok, so I’ve been ruminating on this.

We’ve been told by several characters that Castiel was a rebel. He’s been called a spanner, he’s been told by both Naomi and God!Chuck that he came off the line with a crack in his chassis.

But, it’s always been said, IMO, with a tone of him always being that way. I get the feeling that he was “rebellious” long before he rescued Dean from hell.

I kind of feel like God chose him to lead the charge because of his rebellious nature. Because he knew that Castiel would not only follow orders, he’d improvise if necessary. He knew Castiel was a wild card and that’s what was needed to get Dean out.

They just didn’t expect to lose control over him. But that’s the risk with someone who has a rebellious personality. Unpredictability.

It’s obvious that all angels have their own personalities, as verified by Cas when he said that Uriel is the funniest in the garrison. So, I think Castiel’s personality was always a bit of a rebel.

I rest my case your honor.
