1. Carry On My Wayward Son (10x05) one of my favorite renditions of this song ever

2. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (05x16) the importance of little Sam's presence in Dean's version of Heaven hits you later on in the episode

3. Fare Thee Well (11x20) I love Rob Benedict, what else can I say?!

4. Dead Or Alive (03x16) that last shot of Dean's face while Sam is still singing is a punch in the guts

5. Beautiful Loser (06x01) when you have to lose the one person you love the most to finally live a quiet (and happy...?) life

1. O' Death (05x21) one of the best introductions of a character in a tv show, imho

2. God Was Never On Your Side (14x20) the perfect song to fit the season finale

fuck forgot to do this yesterday, so now you’ll get two eps at once

Bloodlust hits really different on rewatch

first time around the focus was on the argument between the brothers, on Dean taking Gordon’s side and Sam arguing for a more shades of grey approach to hunting, and then the gradual crumbling of Dean’s more black and white worldview, which without the context we later get was almost theoretical

but this time the ep was all about Dean’s struggle with the knowledge John left him with: that there is something monstrous about Sam, that Dean might have to kill his own brother. it’s really fascinating how clearly that theme is there once you know what to look for: Gordon killing his vampire sister. Dean looking uncomfortable with Gordon’s conviction that the world is black and white. Dean’s immediate guilt when he’s hit Sam, and the almost relief he seems to feel about letting the vampire live

also: poor innocent babies, they’re so uncomfortable with a severed head in a box

Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things...whoo boy

i had completely forgotten about that crying confession of Dean’s feelings at the end of the ep. “what could you possibly say to make that alright?” shit, i think i repressed this, it’s way too heartbreaking, especially when Sam can’t say anything. he looks so lost, confronted with Dean’s feelings, he’s been yelling at Dean to tell him what’s going on, to deal with his feelings in a healthy manner, and then Dean opens up and Sam is utterly unable to comfort him

other than that, there’s much weird angry-flirting going on in this ep, a kind of constant push and pull, like they’re daring each other to...idk, do something to break the growing tension between them. and so much weird codependent shit: Dean not wanting to let Sam visit mom’s grave alone, Sam hiding a pleased grin when it turns out there was a case and Dean is angry at him just to make a point, Dean flashing an unwitting smile when Sam confesses being afraid of losing him...they’re so angry at each other and so desperate for each other and so in sync despite everything

also: Dean is just so pretty in this ep, is that some Manners magic? or maybe it’s that open shirt and rare v-neck, he should have worn those more often 

also also, hadn’t noticed it before, and i don’t know if it was already present in previous eps, but besides the samulet Dean is wearing something with a silvery ball chain around his neck. i would guess John’s dog tags, but Sam buries a set of them at Mary’s grave, so idk, could there be two sets?

Dean already going against the narrative that he's a killer, fuck yes

The concept of non-murderous vampires is fantastic. It's the idea that people can overcome their instincts, their genes or upbringing, what's expected of them.. that they can overcome the darkest parts of themselves and choose kindness. So freaking happy the show didn't shy away from that

And I mean:

Bonus Dean contemplating things, because holy fuck Jensen is a phenomenal actor

ohh gordon’s first appearence. oh my god i’m treading this already they are gonna do him so dirty...

sam’s such a little bitch in this episode i love him. he has some good points though.

dean’s just looking for someone he can relate to. sam’s not wrong about dean trying to fill the john shaped whole in his life though.

gordon has more than a few screws loose in his head. he’s also going straight at dean’s insecurities.

loving this whole moral dilemma of some monsters not being bad. good thing they take this approach and make their decisions so much more difficult when it comes to hunting in the future 🙃 this is definetly something they will not completely ignore in the future when it’s convinient...

i like this episode because it introduces gordon and the moral grey are for hunting but it makes me tread for the future because of what happens to both...
