The 80s Grue-Crew and guest Ralph Miller III take a trip to a hospital in Canada to diagnose Blue Monkey (1987). This one features the beginnings of an epidemic, some ludicrous laser shenanigans, an extraordinary amount of green goo, and a freaky larva that magically metamorphoses (we think) into a giant insect that begins killing patients in the now quarantined hospital. All of this is accomplished with some generally good effects work and an abundance of pseudo-sciencing. Steven Railsback, Gwynyth Walsh, Don Lake, Susan Anspach, and John Vernon jump into the fray, accompanied by Marwella and Dede, a pair of golden girls getting drunk in the background, and Robin Dukes and Joe Flaherty having their first baby. Ah, yes. Canadian horror has such a unique flavor. As you can tell, there’s plenty of material for our talkabout… even though there’s no actual blue monkey.
At the time of this writing, Blue Monkey (1987) is available to stream from Tubi and multiple PPV sources.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be Angel (1984), starring… wait for it… Rory Calhoun! Joining him are Donna Wilkes, Cliff Gorman, Dick Shawn, Susan Tyrrell, and John Diehl, all cavorting on the strip. Unfortunately, there’s a serial killer on the prowl.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

Eurovision 2007 - Number 3 - Aud Wilken - "Husker Du"
youtube
It's becoming painfully apparent to me that songs from Denmark rarely make it into my lists unless they've been written by one or both of Lisse Cabble and Mette Mathiesen. For 2007, they've teamed up with Aud Wilken again with the aim of reliving their 1995 Eurovision success.
Prior to her Eurovision involvement, Aud had actually been involved in various alt rock bands in Denmark after she moved there with her father from East Germany in the 1980s. For a time, she was the lead singer in the band The Poets, who were one of the more prominent post-punk alt bands in Denmark at the time.
Since 1995 Aud Wilken has released a studio album, Diamond in the Rough, recorded a song for the soundtrack of a Nicolas Winding Refn film and has also had another song written for her by Leonard Cohen. She may not have a huge recorded musical output, but when she does, there are big names involved.
That gets her to 2007 and Husker Du (Do You Remember?). It's as laid back as Fra Mols Til Skagen. Maybe it's even the same relationship from that song that's being sung about here. Back then it was slow train rides to silk sheets and who knows what else. Now Aud wants to be remembered by someone. Someone who left her some time ago and who she hasn't let go of in her heart quite yet.
It's a plea for the wind to whisper her name to them and even, maybe, haunt them a little wherever they might be. The song itself is haunting. It has a touch of the Wuthering Heights about it, albeit less melodramatic. A love that survives time and place, wafting its tendrils out to seek a home. The guitar lines are slow and have a sad country, pedal steel effect. It feels like music that might have escaped from a David Lynch film. Mysterious, supernatural, somehow eternal.
Slightly shockingly, the Danish public rejected this out of hand. It finished in the bottom half of its semi-final. Then in the last chance round, it didn't succeed. It's a result that makes me scratch my head and wonder what on Earth was going on in Denmark at the time. What made the televote not click with this? None of the other fifteen songs in this national final left any impression on me to the point that looking through the list, the only one I can actually recall is the winner which went to Eurovision.
Aud remains a little bit of a mystery after 2007. Every biography or article about her I've found, in the short time I have to research this, ends with Husker Du in 2007. I don't know exactly what happened next, apart from a couple of songs and performances. For Lisse Cabble and Mette Mathiesen though there is likely to be much more in the future.
I did find a couple of post 2007 songs by Aud one of which is this beautiful piece Knowing That It's There.

I enjoyed it, in short. Satisfying sports story, a solid message, decent humour and a serviceable cast. Emilio Estevez is fine in the role of Gordon, he’s definitely the best actor on display here. The numerous child actors are all alright, Shaun Weiss (Goldberg) is the one who stands out in my memory most. A nice little film about a local, youth ice hockey team, one for the family.

Bio-Med Tech-Girls 2023: Reflection
We kicked off the 10th annual Bio-Med Tech-Girls on August 7. In one week, 15 participants from 7 high schools toured 4 UVA Biomedical Engineering labs and 4 Civil and Environmental Engineering labs, learned from and were inspired by 20+ UVA student volunteers, got hands-on with computer science and biomedical engineering design challenges, were joined by guest speakers and wrapped up the week with a Demo Party on August 11 to share their design challenge projects with friends and family.
"What was most surprising was the range of experiences brought to us. I never expected to be able to talk to undergrads, learn about biomed, tour labs, and create my own project all in one program." - 2023 Bio-Med Tech-Girls participant
The Bio-Med Tech-Girls program is a unique collaboration between Charlottesville Women in Tech (CWIT), the department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD). Here are some highlights from the week.

How does Tumblr function as a Digital Community?
In 2014 Tumblr was the fastest growing social platform (Lunden, 2014), since then numbers may have declined yet it is still a place that houses an important digital community. Like most social platforms users can follow, reblog (share) images and like eachothers posts although, Tumblr is unique in the way that it’s a blogging site yet users communicate primarily through images. It’s currency, ‘reposts’ are another form of ‘likes’ which displays the popularity of the image but direct comments on posts are not an available feature. In order for users to comment, they must repost the image which ends up being displayed on their own blog. David Karp who founded Tumblr states that this feature is key to discourage overly negative comments, diffusing comment wars that ignite and exacerbate bullying and hate speech (Kanai, 2015).
A platform that provides connectivity and actively encourages and relies upon the creation and sharing of content, Tumblr is the perfect environment for niche communities to thrive. The ‘hug box’ theory (Kruse et.al, 2017) addresses the ease of eliminating anything we dislike or disagree with online translating to an unfollow, unfriend or delete. This filtration process enables us to make sense of the vast information we are faced with on social media and connects us to likeminded communities with similar interests (Kruse, 2017).
“These virtual communities based on shared interests rather than shared physical space can be more democratic, less oppressive” (Jenkins, 2016) and despite the absence of a personal profile or social network, the anonymity users have on Tumblr enables them to voice their opinions freely (Papacharissi, 2011). This freedom of speech allows self-expression to be exercised to its full potential with no consequences of a ‘tarnished reputation.’
Tumblr plays a vital role in shaping our social identity, an online extension of ourselves allowing us to create and play with the ‘look’ of blog through many facets. The way we portray ourselves to our online community, the aesthetic of our blog becomes our new physical appearance to hide behind (Zoonen, 2013). An emphasis on individuality has grown as Tumblr becomes saturated with users, yet a desire to fit in is prevalent, as similar aesthetics are formed and certain themes become popular. Tumblr functions to serve as an extension of ourselves, a place for self expression with no filter and a place that cultivates niche communities.
