A Cold Place Between the Shores

After taking a break from comics (excluding the release of Berzerkid and editing Last Chance to Find Duke), I finally decided to self-publish a collection of my short work. I’d been thinking about doing it for years, but I always found an excuse not do it. The collection, A Cold Place Between the Shores, consisted of three stories which revolved around war: the titular story illustrated by @ohotnig (previously unpublished), “The Tea House” illustrated by @lemlemur, and “Dafina” illustrated by @davidaguado142 (both first published in Heavy Metal); the cover, using a page from “Dafina,” was designed with the help of @olleforsslof. I was in a hurry to get it printed for the Stockholm International Comics Festival, so I only printed a small amount of copies and sold all of them at the festival (except for a few copies sold by Peow at @torontocomics​). I’m considering reprinting it for next year’s festival and making it more widely available with the help of a small press distributor.

Interview with the Writer

Marco Fraga Silva interviewed me for the Portuguese magazine H-alt and for his doctoral project in which he interviews comic creators "to better understand how people develop their ideas." The interview (my first interview, actually) was originally published in Portuguese; a slightly edited version of the interview is also available in English. Marco asked me thoughtful questions which elicited answers like this:

“I learned to write by studying films and comics closely, not always intellectually or technically, but always emotionally, searching for what resonates with me. That tells me what direction to go in.”

He also translated one of my early sci-fi stories, “Catch,” illustrated by @mymiddlenameisgilligan​, for H-alt #11, so I’ve now been published in five languages: Portuguese, Italian, Danish, Swedish, and English.

F2 & F3 FEATURE RACE REPORTS - 2020 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Lirim Zendeli dominated his way to victory in the Formula 3 Feature Race, whilst Yuki Tsunoda got incredibly lucky, as Nikita Mazepin got a farcical penalty to cost him victory in Formula 2.

TSUNODA WINS AS MAZEPIN GETS ROBBED

Yuki Tsunoda took his second Formula 2 victory of the season at Spa-Francorchamps after Nikita Mazepin was handed a very harsh five-second time penalty having taken the chequered flag in P1.

Mazepin allegedly “forced” Tsunoda off the road at Le Combes, despite the Japanese driver going for a gap that was always going to close, behind the pair, Mick Schumacher finished on the podium again to continue his decent season.

Tsunoda started on pole and got away well and led into La Source, as Mazepin lost P2 to a fast starting Nobuharu Matsushita. Robert Shwartzman went backwards off the line, whilst Juri Vips was up to P16 having started from P21 at the end of the first lap.

In stark contrast, Guilherme Samaia stalled on the grid for Campos, he later got going but didn’t finish, whilst Jehan Daruvala struggled again, and had to pit at the end of the first lap thanks to a broken front wing.

Matsushita’s good start didn’t last long, and he lost P2 and P3 to Mazepin and Schumacher respectively on lap three, and then P4 and P5 to Louis Deletraz and Shwartzman on lap four, his race then ended when defending from his team mate Felipe Drugovich going into Blanchimont, moving over on the Brazilian and making contact, breaking Drugovich’s front wing and sending the Japanese driver spinning off into the barrier, deploying the Virtual Safety Car.

Thanks to the long lap, racing resumed again just at the end of lap six, and a lap later Guanyu Zhou started his charge up through the pack, taking P5 from Shwartzman on lap seven and P4 from Deletraz  on lap eight, however his team mate, Callum Ilott, couldn’t find the same pace, dropping behind fellow Brit Dan Ticktum, down in to P9 at Le Combes.

The same lap saw Mazepin and Schumacher pit first, looking for the undercut, but a slow stop for Schumacher cost him time. The strategy paid off for Mazepin, as he jumped Tsunoda for the net lead when he came in just a lap later.

He took the actual lead back on lap 16, when Zhou finally came in having run the alternate strategy, and he struggled when he came back out, running wide at Le Combes, then being passed by Luca Ghiotto, Pedro Piquet, Ticktum and Ilott to fall all the way down to P9.

Piquet then attacked Ghiotto and initially got through for P6, but then got repassed by the Italian, and Ticktum to fall down to P8, and continued to drop backwards and out of the points, a real shame for the Brazilian after a decent opening stint.

Lap 19 saw all of the mechanics and members of the paddock, participate in a lap of applause in memory of Anthoine Hubert, who lost his life at this track after a crash at Radillon last year, this included Juan Manuel Correa, who is still recovering from his injuries.

Zhou then repassed Ilott for P8 and Ghiotto for P7 as his fresh rubber finally started to come to life, whilst Ilott lost P9 to Roy Nissany, who was putting in a surpisingly decent drive, he also passed Ghiotto for P8 and reverse grid pole with just a couple of laps to go.

However the final laps were dominated by the leaders, and it looked like Mazepin had done enough to see off Tsunoda��s charge, with the Red Bull junior only able to attack with the help of DRS on the Kemmel Straight every lap, however the stewards felt differently, and opted to Mazepin another harsh penalty for the second weekend in a row (having also lost a P3 finish in Barcelona) and the Russian was understandably fuming on the podium after the race.

ZENDELI DOMINATES TO TAKE MAIDEN VICTORY

Trident’s Lirim Zendeli took his first ever F3 victory, dominating from pole position in the Feature Race, as he held off the challenge from Theo Pourchaire, and his team mate and compatriot David Beckmann.

Jake Hughes had another miserable day, through no fault of his own again, unable to get away from the grid on the Formation Lap, meaning he had to start from the pits.

Once the race finally got away, Zendeli led well into La Source ahead of Pourchaire and Alex Smolyar as they held their positions off the line. However, it wasn’t long until the first yellow flags, with Clement Novalak sustaining a puncture and rookie Andreas Estner limping back without a front wing and a rear right puncture. Enzo Fittipaldi also sustained a puncture on lap two to ruin his race for HWA.

Alessio Deledda then brought out the yellow flags again on lap three, managing to spin off on the exit of the Fagnes chicane and beach his car in the gravel trap to end his anonymous race to compound Campos’ woeful morning.

Lap six saw Oscar Piastri put a brilliant move in on Richard Verschoor round the outside of the Bus Stop Chicane to take P7, and lap seven saw David Beckmann move into the podium positions, passing Smolyar down the Kemmel Straight.

Liam Lawson and Piastri made contact at Le Combes on lap 10 whilst battling for P6, with the Prema coming out on top on the run down through Malmedy, but he was forced to give the position back at the Bus Stop, and got through again at the same place on lap 11.

Piastri then passed his championship rival on lap 15, with Logan Sargeant struggling home with an engine issue, which cost him the chance to challenge Smolyar for P4 and saw him drop behind his main rival and then fellow team mate Vesti too.

Sargeant held on behind Olli Caldwell to take home some points and start from P3 in the Sprint Race, but his misfortune means Piastri becomes the new Championship leader.

Dennis Hauger starred from those who finished outside of the points, recovering from a poor qualifying session to climb 13 places to finish P15, whilst rookie Michael Belov also climbed 9 positions to finish P20 on his debut.

Whilst Jake Hughes was able to take solace from posting the Fastest Lap, but he was unable to take the points having finished outside the top 10, in another race in which he was left to wonder what could have been.

É o que os nossos camaradas do Ladrão perguntam no premiado clipe cheio de imagens fortes, que apesar de lançado em 2015 continua super atual: "Lançado em 2015 o clipe "Preço" foi produzido por Thiago Fraga e teve o patrocínio da @Jagüermeister, apoio da Condal Máscaras e Estúdio Túnel, que foram determinantes, para financiar a produção, que retrata um período como sempre confuso na política partidária brasileira e mundial. Foi um período de hiato na banda, (bem parecido com o de agora kkk, só que 1 ano), que teve a saída do guitarrista Guiga, de mudança para SP, que é também um dos criadores da música. Gravada e produzida pelo Pedrinho, (Pedro Gracia), a música foi gravada já com o Farrah nas guitarras, e o curioso é que o clipe foi gravado antes da música, e quem aparece nas imagens é o Guitarrista Gabriel Lobo, o Muleke, grande parceiro do Daniel em outros projetos, que chegou a gravar as guitarras da música em São Paulo com produção do David Corcos, mas nunca foi finalizada, (coisas de "produças" brazucas under na raça, "Frankstenianas" kkkk , mas que no final se encaixam kkk) e como todos estão de máscaras no clipe, ninguém vê a cara de ninguém no vídeo kkk !!! Túúúééddoooiiddooo kkk! O vídeo para a época, (bem diferente de agora) teve um alcance muito rápido e expressivo com muitas visualizações no YouTube, e foi vencedor como o melhor Videoclipe Nacional, na categoria - Júri Popular - no 8° Festival de Videoclipes do Tocantins -TO, também foi exibido na época no programa Hay Mucho Rockandroll do Canal TV, (TDT) Espanha. Como ainda vivemos desdobramentos desse assalto político partidário dos poderes brasileiros, "Preço" ainda, infelizmente, segue atual e recentemente foi exibido no programa "Atitude Sonora" da TVT." hi hello hey here’s a couple of quick oc run downs while i still set everything up

◈ clovis is bazett’s cousin that took over the fraga family when bazett left. after hearing word that bazett died, clovis summons berserker (alter cu chulainn) to fight in the holy grail war; only there’s a lot of shit wrong going on. clovis suffers from a lot of insecurity & abandonment issues as well as abuse she dealt with as a child. 

◈ elisaviol is a homunculus created by the gressil family using a mix of alchemy and necromancy. the gressil’s are a small magus family that held a lot of hatred towards the eizberns. her existence in stay night kicks off an early apocrypha war.

◈ seri is basically a gudako replacement in fate/grand order. though, their personalities are completely different.

◈ athanasia is the daughter of leonardo in an alternate universe and master in the fate/extra setting.

◈ sae is the lieutenant of the 13th division and an anomaly. they were found one day in one of the districts in rukongai because of their insanely large reiatsu. it was a bit of goose chase for awhile as sae learned to conceal their reiatsu and hide away in the woods with a couple of orphans they picked up. they were caught not long after taking an asauchi off a shinigami in order to protect one of the kids they picked up. sae is a genius despite their laziness & habit of falling asleep in the craziest place; they tend to gear more towards long range than short range. 

◈ tsuyoshi was born through one of orochimaru’s experiments with hatake and tenro (not based on the game) dna. they escaped the lab they were stationed at with their older half brother shitsurai and caretaker mitori at the age of 5 but were found and taken in by konoha’s anbu and placed in (incredibly) kakashi’s care. they have a kouton (steel release).

◈ silla mysterious student and leader of the white dragon house which is aligned with the church. seems to be related to rhea in some way. 

◈ sigyn known more commonly on asgard as hylla who grew in the realm of light elves, alfheim, as the half-elf, half-asgardian daughter of freya and eldrinn. her mother, who once trained and led the valkyries, fled to alfheim in sorrow and grief after hela’s massacre. freya fell in love with king eldrinn, eventually having hylla. hylla was loved and adored by her mother, father and the people of alfheim. she is bound to loki by fate. when she becomes the asgardian equivalent of 18 she moves to asgard. as her mother’s daughter she’s skilled in the art of magic and war. 

◈ kira a powerful psionic mutant taken into xavier's school for gift children at a young age. her power rivals jean grey's, whom kira dates in their teenage years. she's the host for the cosmic entity kishin who amplifies her powers. kishin originally wished to destroy the world; feeding on kira's hatred for it when she was younger due to the abuse she'd gone through and the societal stigmatism against mutants- but as kira grows older and learns to be more of a person instead of a weapon, loving the world and all the good in it, kishin's morality shifts along with her. kira travels the world with logan.

◈ asha an omega level mutant with the power to create, shape, and manipulate aura; she was found by charles during the events of the movie first class using the cerebro. asha is extremely protective of the younger mutants brought in and acts as something like the team mom. out of all the recruits, she seems to be the one to have the most control over her powers and isn't afraid of them either, making her a powerful asset. her abilities allow for an incredible wide range of capabilities from enhance her own and other's strength to healing to telepathy and so on. her powers are based off the seven chakras.

◈ astaroth is a fallen archangel now archdemon of hell and twin sibling of asmodeus as well as the older sibling of the archangel anael. lives on earth with john constantine. they can shapeshift between male and female forms depending on their mood. goes by the human names venus and david constantine. asmodeus and them are able to grant wishes similar to djinn (judaism) and are the embodiment of lust.

◈ lyta demigod daughter of ares. spent a lot of her life unknowingly feeding off the anger of other people until it drove her mad. lived her life as a pawn for her father's plans to destroy wonder woman but wanted to part of it. after a long drawn out fight with wonder woman ending her lyta's defeat, she disappeared and was never heard of again for months. she turned up again, alongside red hood, starfire and arsenal, joining their team of outlaws. her and jason are currently in a relationship as well as the both of them flirting with tim drake. lyta has similar powers to her father; superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and endurance, being able to summon and control any weapon, as well as minor necromancy.

◈ nezha born zahra al ghul, known among the league of assassins as al sahira. the daughter of ra's al ghul. her parents sold her to ra's in order to repay debts they owed and growing up under the assassin's tutelage is all she's ever known. she's a decade younger than talia but the two were often pitted against each other and grew to see the other as nothing but competition. before damian was born, nezha was an unfeeling killing machine who held no remorse for her targets. unlike talia who seemed to grow no maternal instincts during the birth of her son damian, nezha grew it in her stead. nezha became extremely doting and protective of damian and in the process gained a something of a conscious and a moral compass. nezha later swore her allegiance to damian, acting as a retainer for the young boy as well as something of an older sister figure in his life. she helped damian to gotham and with meeting his father. when damian became robin, nezha stayed with him at the wayne mansion. 

◈ azrael deserter of heaven. she loved michael and lucifer so much their fight brought her to depression. during the war she faked her death and hid among humans for centuries. azrael resurfaces after fallen in love with a sickly human; bending laws in order to keep him alive. sadly because she was attracting the attention of heaven and hell & she was pregnant with a nephilim, azrael had to part ways with her human and allow him to die. leaving her and her son to travel the world hiding from angels and demons. 

◈ marcia formerly from a big and notorious hunting family, the clarks, marcia went into hiding to live a normal life after finding out her mother was actually her aunt and that her birth mother died in order to fulfill azrael contract and make marcia one of the special children who would become apart of lucifer’s army. marcia was unknowingly given small doses of demon blood all throughout her life until she turned 18 and found out the truth. when she left her family she went to school to become a doctor. when her husband dies from a demon attack, she goes back to hunting.

◈ bilith was once considered the weakest of the princes of hell until she developed a bit of cannibalistic tendencies towards demonkind. she gets stronger the more she absorbs other demons; taking their powers as well. bilith never had an interest in human souls, and only cared about knowledge and strength. she’s the only demon who’s been on earth the longest, making contracts with witches, hunters and humans alike but instead of their souls she’d traded them for a valuable/powerful item; growing her collection of trinkets. during her time on earth she developed an order of hunters that focuses on collecting magical artifacts known as the shield of saint benedict (who was known to protect against moral corruption and supernatural dangers)-- to outsiders they claim they are protecting humanity from dangerous magic items but in truth they hand them over to bilith in exchange for favors, these hunters capture any demons they hunt and bring them back for bilith to absorb. bilith doesn’t damn the hunters to hell either or bother taking their souls, the items they bring her sufficing for they’re deals. still, with all the powers she’s gained over the years she’s still rightfully terrified of lucifer, lilith and azazel and despite her confidence is quite a coward when it comes to them.
