As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

here is the sheet. it's an excel spreadsheet so it will download to your computer. this is really important for all the people who constantly say "democrats and republicans are the same." if they're not willing to do the work to either prove or disprove that notion, they're NOT someone ANYONE should be taking political advice from.

indeed my exact process once every 8 months or so
#I just thought today of a new way to format a 'profile' (like the descriptions of self that people use on friend meeting#apps and stuff) and how to organize the sections so that it seems such and such a way and oh what if there's links which click off#into branching paths so it's very acessible and there are two different forms depending on so on and so forth#and i was like 'um.. wow. amazing idea. this will be soooo aweseome and will definitely work' but then .. you know...self reflection#lol.. is this just like the millions of other iterations of a similar thing? No.. This Is Different ... Surely...#Though if I had a millionaire friend and a few people who do the type of coding you use for web design stuff and etc..#I could create the most elaborate detailed and amazing platonic friend seeking (and I guess you could also have 'dating' as an option#since that would draw in more of a crowd) website on the earth.. the new okcupid (back when okcupid didn't suckishly abandon their#whole format in hopes of trying to become just like tinder or whatever and they actually had like tons of info and percentages and#open answer questions and would list personality traits on a profile (like 'this person is more Open To New Expereinces than 65% of#other users' etc.). etc. etc. Oh what a beautiful thing I could craft for the detail freaks of the world.... Alas...#unfortunately we seem to be in an oversimplification era.. everything in short quick bites. everything on a tiny phone screen. etc.#marketing 'Introducing The Most Complicated Data Heavy Social Connection Site In The World' would not sell well I'd imagine gjhgjh#AANYWAY.. also no idea why the representation of me is in a turtle neck. what a bold fashion choice..#In another moment of self reflection.. the fact that in the first tag on this post I felt the need to define the word 'profile' just to be#specific as if people couldn't tell from context.. so clearly someone who finds filling out forms a 'fun afternoon activity' lol#the type of guy who finds psych evaluations and pop quizzes and making chore lists mostly enjoyable (< true)

thinking about what if data were aromantic. even after he gets the emotion chip put in, he still just doesn’t feel romantic love, and doesn’t understand what other people are feeling when they talk about it. and he’s really upset at first because he feels like after everything he’s been through to get here he still isn’t fully human. there’s still a piece missing. he’s tapped into every work of art humans have ever created and romance seems so ubiquitous that he thinks you can’t be human without it
i’m imagining this as like a b or c plot of an episode. maybe he’s been working with a crew member who turns out to be aromantic and they commiserate about how alienating it can be to hear everyone talk about romance all the time. everyone comes together at the end to help him realize that he feels so many different kinds of love, and no human’s experience with emotions is exactly the same and your humanity doesn’t depend on what emotions you do or don’t feel anyway
i think this would be a good episode. i would enjoy it

thank you for your service, fiskars eight inch non-stick titanium softgrip scissors
you lived, ready-to-hand, in the hone slot of my knife block and together, for the last six years and seventy five days, we have opened bags and boxes, snipped ties and tape, shaped paper and cloth. sometimes though, i asked more of you, we trimmed the woody stems of herbs, we pruned the branches of plants, and as your final task, we cut through the rib cage of a spatchcocking spring chicken. i tried to repair your broken handle, but it was not to be. for now your slot sits empty. you will be missed

The thing is. Representation in media did change things. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s, where the only place you could see shows or movies with queer people was on Cable television on the gay channel or the sex-allowed channel. There was The L Word, and Queer as Folk, and those weren't on the main channels. On the main channels, shows were still getting told they couldn't show a clearly queer character (Xena, The Next Generation, DS9 had to fight to get the 1 queer kiss, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to fight to eventually get to show Willow and Tara kiss). Then of course there was the majority of characters being men in TV shows, and characters being white. But I'm going to focus on the queer rep thing because that's what I can for sure say has changed a lot.
By the time we get to 2010s, it was actually NORMAL enough for queer people to be in shows on mainstream channels that I could actually choose to ONLY watch shows with a queer character. And most straight people probably watched at least 1 show with a queer character. And that normalized seeing queer people for them. It made straight people start caring LESS if they saw a queer person on TV. Yes, people still probably wrote into shows and said "you better not show this!" but shows knew it was not going to kill their profits to just show queer people, so they didn't cancel shows over having a queer character or SHOWING some queer person kissing someone. (Showing interracial relationships was also a steady thing like this... Sonic 2 has a black woman and a white man together in a HUGE mainstream movie for kids! Fallout show has a black woman and a white man married as one of the main relationships! There was a time when your show got cancelled if you even tried to show a black person and white person kissing. Representing stuff shifts what society views as 'normal' and tolerates. Show enough interracial couples in media, and the main bulk of society stops caring enough to fight to get something cancelled by avoiding it, stops caring enough about avoiding it to care that it exists and fight it's existence).
We get to now. Now a straight person can watch a show like Interview with the Vampire, or Arcane, and the fact there are queer main characters are NOT something you even need to warn the straight person about. The straight person may seek out those shows ON their own, like them for their own merit as a show (or not like them on that merit), and that's it. No more concern that just including a queer person will drive the average straight person to avoid your show, or that it will be such a high risk the channel will want to prevent the queer character existing. (Except hey for stuff like Disney which... still overwhelmingly seems frightened...) I'm just saying. We came SO far in 30 years. In the beginning shows fought to show whatever little they were able (and most shows avoided showing queer people altogether for fear of the risk). And now it is such a SMALL risk that shows expect the average straight audience member to not care if they see a queer person. That's a huge difference tbh. When I was a teenager I feared just being OUT might expose me to most adults attacking me verbally, or more. Now as a queer adult, I expect most Average straight people to not care about my sexuality or at least not verbally (or physically) attack me for it if I'm just mentioning who I dated once/that I went to pride/that I'm bi. That is a huge difference after years of normalization. Yes, there's still jerks who will attack me, but its such a shift that I don't automatically have to assume every straight person by default will likely attack me - I can actually assume some won't! Nothing changed in their lives, in the past 30 years a lot of them didn't make more queer friends or anything. But they just don't care as much that some person different than them... exists.
We are to the point where a straight person, who is not queer and doesn't know queer people, may actually choose to watch Young Royals or Heartstopper or Red White and Royal Blue JUST because they like teen drama, or romance genre stuff. That's a huge fucking shift from the days when straight people would not even run into queer content unless they specifically got cable, and sought out the very rare channel that showed mostly queer content. There's way more 'stuff for average audiences' now that includes queer people, and more 'stuff for queer people that's also X genre' that average straight audiences actually are willing to check out because they like X genre and seeing queer people is not an immediate reason to avoid the media for them.

I really want there to be a canon autistic/adhd/nuerodivergent character in Star Trek. I want there to be someone that the next generation of Star Trek fans can see themselves in like I saw myself in Data and Spock. The newer Treks have done a pretty good job including queer characters and poc, I just need there to be one character who is nuerodivergent who isn’t considered ‘emotionless’ or ‘lacking’. Representation matters.

So I went ahead and deleted my last post because honestly- I get the criticism with the skin tones now. They do need to do better when designing characters of color in this show- I do think there’s an issue with many artists making darker skin look ashy and gray and while for some characters it makes sense, it loses the meaning when it’s every single character in a series.
Personally, if I ever draw a character who is a POC- I try to research and find as many different references as I can so I don’t get any of it wrong. I’m not the best artist, but I try to have variety when it comes to what I draw. I also love learning new things, before my iPad broke I had a study I was doing where I practiced drawing characters with box braids, locks, textured curly hair, and I had been working on different Afro styles most recently. It was hard, but that’s why I was doing a study of the styles (RIP iPad- that’s all gone now). As for skin tones- I love doing a variety on that as well. I will say that I have seen plenty of people being borderline colorist when it comes to these characters- the fact that the skin was lighter was not the problem, I think it’s more so the lack of warmth and saturation?
Since you have characters with a more vibrant color palette in heaven- there’s not much of a reason to make Sera and Emily very desaturated (though I argue that Em is worse than Sera in this situation). I do hope we have more variety with characters in seasons 2 and 3- but I’m actually very unsure. Based on what we’ve seen so far.
Also, just a side note, don’t even get me started on Alastor- he was brought up quite a bit on my now deleted post. I have plenty of issues with the design and just slapping the “oh yeah he’s half creole” just to excuse the use of voodoo symbols in the show- I absolutely agree that’s that’s shady. I know that his demon form is supposed to reflect whatever he did in life/ how he died but like- he has NO ethnic features?? I know there’s mixed people who have light skin and practically no ethnic features- but I feel like we need some visual indicator rather than a “yeah hes mixed” randomly said on a stream one day. Most people are going to assume that he was a white man. Maybe that’ll change once we get his backstory- but who knows.
Anyways- that’s all I’m gonna really say about it. I do love this show but it absolutely has its flaws. I hate how the genuine criticisms are overshadowed by people who just hate the show and Viv- because there are some really valid takes out there, it’s just hard to find the ones who are genuinely just pointing out the shows flaws in a constructive way.
