David Lean's 'Hobson's Choice' on Max, Peacock and Criterion Channel
Hobson’s Choice (1954) was only one of two comedies from celebrated British director David Lean, a filmmaker best known for his intelligent literary adaptations and sweeping epics on vast cinematic canvas. Charles Laughton is comically tyrannical as the blustery Henry Hobson, a widower who huffs away with arrogance and indignation at the three daughters who work as unpaid employees in his boot…

Daphne Anderson, Laurence Olivier, and Dorothy Tutin in The Beggar's Opera (Peter Brook, 1953)
Cast: Laurence Olivier, Hugh Griffith, George Rose, Dorothy Tutin, George Devine, Mary Clare, Athene Seyler, Stanley Holloway, Daphne Anderson. Screenplay: Denis Cannan, Christopher Fry, based on a libretto by John Gay. Cinematography: Guy Green. Production design: Georges Wakhévitch. Film editing: Reginald Beck. Music: Arthur Bliss.  The Beggar's Opera, John Gay's 1728 ballad opera, is said to have been inspired by a suggestion of Jonathan Swift that someone should compose "a Newgate pastoral among the thieves and whores" in the old London prison. When I watched Peter Brook's film, his first as a movie director, the closed caption insisted on rendering “Newgate” as “nougat.” The movie isn't exactly a "nougat pastoral," but it's a pleasant enough confection, with Technicolor cinematography by Guy Green and production design and handsome costuming by Georges Wakhévitch that evoke William Hogarth's paintings of the actors in the original production. Best of all, the film has Laurence Olivier, Hugh Griffith, Dorothy Tutin, Stanley Holloway, and Athene Seyler in the cast. Gay's songs, originally set to familiar folk song tunes, have been remusicalized by Arthur Bliss, with some additional lyrics by Christopher Fry, who also wrote the screenplay with Denis Cannan. Most of the singing was dubbed, with the exceptions of Olivier and Holloway: The latter nicely displays a basso buffo style and Olivier has a pleasant if sometimes slightly stressed baritone. The film was a flop, unfortunately, and isn't much seen today, but it's worth checking out when it comes around.

It’s Polin Season
*Spoilers ahead for Bridgerton Season 3 part 1*
Tumblr media
so i finished part 1 and oh my god. it was great. i’m gonna rewatch it later, but i want to list some of my favorite things after first watch (i’ll probably forget things I have been awake all night and am sleep deprived but oh well)
colin and el being elusive with one another about their activities
colin having a wet dream after one kiss
colin groping penelope like she was gonna float away
penelope’s new wardrobe and hair (they suit her so well)
PRUDANK
FROHN
phillipa not understanding how a baby is made or born and wondering why her husband has to change his pants after they kiss
surprisingly the music choices! when they were initially released i was wary but they all seem to fit the moment (aside from dynamite which was kinda just there?)
the carriage ride was even better than i imagined and i have imagined it many different ways so bravo team
ending with an almost direct book quote (for gods sake penelope featherington are you going to marry me or not?) chefs kiss. absolutely zero notes
for the show i’m glad the whistledown reveal wasn’t before the carriage scene it wouldn’t have made sense and there wouldn’t have been enough time to resolve it
honestly cressida makes much more sense as a character to me this season but it still doesn’t excuse her being a bully ( i like her but i love pen so)
marcus anderson seems like a good match for violet and i want to learn more about him
we got to see happy kanthony without them overshadowing the new couple (much like daphne in the first season)
things i didn’t like very much
Tumblr media
another plot about benedict sleeping with some woman who will no longer be relevant next season
cressida being straight. this is wrong, do it again and get it right this time.
i honestly would have preferred penelope break off the engagement because she’s still in love with colin than debling doing it for her, but the tension cause of the broken engagement was sweet
though i’m glad kanthony wasn’t overused i still wish they showed up more in part 1, i know they will be back but still. at least one other episode
lady danbury and penelope’s relationship isn’t as strong as it is in the books. mind you polin names their first kid after her.
summary:
with what I have seen so far i almost wish we had gotten weekly releases instead. ideally we’d get the whole thing at once but if that wasn’t an option weekly would have been nice. i’m kinda tired of the binge model. overall i loved part 1 and will definitely be rewatching it later
more thoughts to come! thank you nicola and luke for doing our polin justice

Plot Bunny: Glee + Anderson sibling?
Had to go watch the new Beetlejuice but I am back okay we've got
Daphne Anderson (Rachel Berry and Jesse St. James ship)
Daphne did not love a lot. She didn't love how everyone seemed to know that Blaine and her weren't Cooper's full siblings and that somehow meant they were less than. She didn't love that people hurt her brother enough that he nearly died and they had to go to Dalton Academy and Crawford Country Day. But she did love creating. She loved designing, she loved performing, whatever got that creative bug out. She loved that Blaine was doing much better at Dalton and was killing it with the Warbler's who were as much her friends as his. Then Blaine met Kurt. A competitor from the public school in Lima that obviously had lots of issues. And she had to go to hangouts with him and she met Rachel Berry, who really just gave her a headache but at least she didn't have to deal with her much. Until Blaine also decided to transfer schools, again, and Daphne just couldn't let him go to a public school alone.

Send me a fandom / love interest / faceclaim (one or all of those) and I’ll make a plot bunny

Gideon's Way: The 'V' Men (1.2, ITC, 1965)
"Any theories?"
"Oh, Vane has a lot of enemies."
"Social and political. Is he blaming the police for this?"
"He considers his protection... inadequate."
"It was, as things turned out."
#gideon's way#the v men#1965#alun falconer#cyril frankel#itc#john creasey#john gregson#alexander davion#daphne anderson#roland culver#keith baxter#angela douglas#allan cuthbertson#basil dignam#hugh ross williamson#christine finn#inigo jackson#dervis ward#dyson lovell#peter russell#a curious mixture of successes and failures. other shows had wrestled with the UK's contemporary emergence of a fascist minority (the Saint#did so several times‚ as did Strange Report‚ Special Branch and others). Falconer's script is surprisingly forthright and his politics are#not hard to discern; there's little euphemism here‚ Roland Culver's Vane is an outright fascist who spouts racist and antisemitic garbage#and has a framed picture of Hitler on his wall. we're clearly meant to find him repugnant‚ but this being a police procedural it is perhaps#naturally enough slightly hamstrung by having lead characters who must profess no political allegiance or favouritism (still‚ would it have#killed Gideon to quietly voice his distaste at some point?). much less well handled (as is unfortunately a repeat issue with this series)#is the gender politics that come into the side plot‚ in particular the way Gideon contacts the parents of a pregnant young girl who had#specifically expressed that she didn't want them to know. it's a grubby bit of paternalistic condescension on his part and an unfortunate#reflection on the attitudes of this era regarding unmarried mothers and the unspeakable (literally here) spectre of (gasp!) abortion

I think sometimes the best films to watch during autumn and Halloween season are some of the classics; mainly because the black and white film format just adds another layer of eerie atmosphere. Case in point Rebecca from Alfred Hitchcock. This film is based on the novel by Daphne De Maurier which is about a young woman who meets widower Maxim De Winter; he they meet while he is on his first holiday after his wife’s tragic passing. Her employer knows of the late Rebecca De Winter and we get our first glimpse of this faceless and overpowering character that drives the story.
Our main character and Maxim wed soon after they meet she doesn’t want her leaving without him. She accepts and is delighted to see his home of Manderly; a manor just as imposing as the not forgotten Rebecca. No one holds onto Rebecca as much as the quiet and unsettling Mrs. Danvers, the housemaid for the late Mrs. De Winter. It’s amazing how everyone doesn’t look at the protagonist as more than just a minor inconvenience who stepped into this world and doesn’t belong. That’s how everything is played out at least and it makes you want to know just like the protagonist just what made Rebecca so captivating.
The film itself is stunning to look at. Another film that has this dreamlike haze; but being filmed in black and white makes it feel more nightmarish and gothic. The set design was so grand in scale which aids in making us and the protagonist feel intimidated by this life we’re thrown into. It’s no surprise seeing as the producer was David O’ Selznick from productions like Gone With The Wind. The cinematography is stunning with the silhouettes of the characters being illuminated by a well lit background and in some moments they focus the lighting on just the face of a character to show in moments of heightened emotion.
This film is worth checking out this autumn, if you love gothic atmosphere and films that feel like an eerie trip into another world, this would be for you.
