The Big Sleep (Michael Winner, 1978)
Cast: Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles, Richard Boone, Candy Clark, Joan Collins, Edward Fox, John Mills, James Stewart, Oliver Reed, Harry Andrews, Colin Blakely, Richard Todd. Screenplay: Michael Winner, based on a novel by Raymond Chandler. Cinematography: Robert Paynter. Production design: Harry Pottle. Film editing: Frederick Wilson. Music: Jerry Fielding.
Just don't. At least not unless you've seen Howard Hawks's 1946 version of Raymond Chandler's novel, which is set, as it should be, in Los Angeles. The shift of the action to London is disastrous, necessitating some lame exposition about why Philip Marlowe and the Sternwood clan are in England. Chandler's plot remains as enigmatic as ever, but in the hands of Hawks and screenwriters Jules Furthman, Leigh Brackett, and William Faulkner, we didn't much care whodunit and why. Michael Winner's screenplay just leaves us with a muddle that has no redeeming flavor and texture. Seldom has a cast of superbly accomplished actors been so sadly wasted as they are here under Winner's direction.

The Man who Blew up Christian Theology
Hey, why does no one talk about John Mill? Really, though.
So, John Mill researched for 30 years and in 1707 published a report. There, he analyzed 100 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament and found *30,0000* discrepancies between them. Now, most of these are typos and that can be chalked up to pre-printing press copying. But there *are* discrepancies that do impact Christian doctrine.
So, of course this was a big deal at the time and caused Daniel Whitby to write a scathing (but boring) rebuttal where wrestled with the crisis that you might need tradition to understand scripture. That might make Catholics right. As a recovering Catholic, I can empathize with the existential terror of giving the Catholic church any credit.
Other people like Richard Bentley noted that Christianity has gone through worse and that we don't need to get hung up on the differences, but focus on what shows up in all the sources. Basically, don't sweat it.
But, we *should* sweat it. This is important and even today people argue about whether or not we should take scripture at face value. People have died in conflicts over this. Millions of people. We *should* be talking about it.
So, go look up Bart Ehrman. He goes into way better detail and actually has degrees in the matter.
p.s. John Mill died of a stroke only two weeks after publishing his life's work. Can we applaud the man for just the most epic of mike drops?
