Gideon's Way: The 'V' Men (1.2, ITC, 1965)
"Any theories?"
"Oh, Vane has a lot of enemies."
"Social and political. Is he blaming the police for this?"
"He considers his protection... inadequate."
"It was, as things turned out."
#gideon's way#the v men#1965#alun falconer#cyril frankel#itc#john creasey#john gregson#alexander davion#daphne anderson#roland culver#keith baxter#angela douglas#allan cuthbertson#basil dignam#hugh ross williamson#christine finn#inigo jackson#dervis ward#dyson lovell#peter russell#a curious mixture of successes and failures. other shows had wrestled with the UK's contemporary emergence of a fascist minority (the Saint#did so several times‚ as did Strange Report‚ Special Branch and others). Falconer's script is surprisingly forthright and his politics are#not hard to discern; there's little euphemism here‚ Roland Culver's Vane is an outright fascist who spouts racist and antisemitic garbage#and has a framed picture of Hitler on his wall. we're clearly meant to find him repugnant‚ but this being a police procedural it is perhaps#naturally enough slightly hamstrung by having lead characters who must profess no political allegiance or favouritism (still‚ would it have#killed Gideon to quietly voice his distaste at some point?). much less well handled (as is unfortunately a repeat issue with this series)#is the gender politics that come into the side plot‚ in particular the way Gideon contacts the parents of a pregnant young girl who had#specifically expressed that she didn't want them to know. it's a grubby bit of paternalistic condescension on his part and an unfortunate#reflection on the attitudes of this era regarding unmarried mothers and the unspeakable (literally here) spectre of (gasp!) abortion

Older Movie Reviews: ENDLESS LOVE (1981)
Starring Brooke Shields, Martin Hewitt, Shirley Knight
Directed by Franco Zeffirelli
Produced by Dyson Lovell
The film tells the story of David Axelrod (Martin Hewitt), a working-class teenager who falls in love with Jade Butterfield (Brooke Shields), the privileged daughter of a wealthy family. David's love for Jade is all-consuming, and he will stop at nothing to be with her, even if it means defying her father's wishes and risking everything he holds dear.
The performances in "Endless Love" are strong, particularly from Martin Hewitt and Brooke Shields. Hewitt brings a raw intensity to his role as David, while Shields imbues Jade with a vulnerability and sensitivity that makes her character sympathetic and relatable. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and their love story is both passionate and heartbreaking.
The film's soundtrack is also worth mentioning. It features a number of iconic songs from the era, including Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's "Endless Love," which became a chart-topping hit in 1981. The music adds to the film's romantic atmosphere and is sure to evoke feelings of nostalgia for anyone who grew up during that time.
One of the things that struck me upon revisiting "Endless Love" is how it deals with issues that are still relevant today. The film touches on themes of class, race, and parental expectations, all of which are still prevalent in our society. The story also examines the intense emotions and impulses of young love, which is something that never goes out of style.
That being said, "Endless Love" is not without its flaws. The film can be melodramatic at times, and some of the supporting characters are thinly drawn. Additionally, some of the plot points and character decisions may not hold up under closer scrutiny. However, these minor issues do not detract from the overall impact of the film.
"Endless Love" is a movie that's stood the test of time. Its themes of love, class, and family still resonate with audiences today, and the performances from Martin Hewitt and Brooke Shields are as powerful as ever. While it may not be a perfect film, it's one that's worth revisiting for its powerful emotions and nostalgic charm.

The Hidden Truth 1.1 Cause of Death (16th July 1964); written by Martin Woodhouse; dir. Lionel Harris. Featuring regulars Alexander Knox, James Maxwell, Elizabeth Weaver & George Moon, with guests Derrick Sherwin & Ellen McIntosh, Dyson Lovell, Hamilton Dyce, Brian Badcoe & Stanley Lloyd.
“Well, I’d really like to know what you think - were those wounds caused by glass or weren’t they?”
A tramp stumbles on the body of a lonely old man, found, with a lacerated neck, close to his crashed car. Inspector Hollin (Hamilton Dyce) investigates and suspicion falls on the man’s son-in-law Roger Maitland (Derrick Sherwin), an ambitious, career-minded young man, putting strain on his marriage to wife Jean (Ellen McIntosh). The pair are beneficiaries of the victim’s £27,000 life insurance policy - money they’re badly in need of. Dr Mossford (Brian Badcoe), concerned by the nature of the lacerations, asks Professor Lazard and Dr Fox for help in establishing the cause of death. It looks like a straightforward car crash, so Lazard sends Dr Fox to take a look - but there are several different possible explanations and it turns out to be “more of a whatdunnit than a whodunnit” with “no simple solution”.
Initially scheduled for Thursday 9th of July at 8pm, The Hidden Truth was one of many ITV shows hit by a technicians’ strike. It was especially unfortunate as the original publicity & schedule details confused critics (and no doubt viewers), robbing the show of its allotted space in some papers. (The Guardian‘s TV critic, duly tuning in on the 9th, found themselves watching Our Man at St Mark’s & shrugged and left it at that.)
It was re-scheduled for the 13th, (three days before the second episode “The Shape”), but wound up going out instead of “The Shape” on the 16th July & causing further confusion. (IMDB, even now, gives its broadcast date as the 9th & its episode summary as that of The Shape!)
In the Daily Herald (July 17th), Dennis Potter found it better than he had anticipated, although thought that might only be because he’d just had to sit through HMS Paradise “the worst comedy show I have ever seen,” but “Even so, this drama about pathologists did not begin to live up to its billing as “the most unusual series ever shown on T.V”. It was as “usual” as a wet bank holiday...
A close-up of blood cells under the microscope gave us a reassuring flash of authenticity... But a drama series has to drag in irritating little irrelevancies to get us interested in characters likely to pop up again in the next episode.
About the same standard as No Hiding Place, this new venture fills an hour of screen time without making it seem like two hours. And that, by current ITV standards, must pass as a sort of praise.“
The Stage, on the 23rd, was still confused: “THE first of this new series last Friday [sic] was, for some reason, not the advertised episode, but with the same principal characters. The Hidden Truth is there to be uncovered, I imagine, by the Department of Forensic Medicine which forms the background of the series.
This was, on the surface, a fairly run-of-the-mill whodunnit by Martin Woodhouse, but it turned out that it was really more of a whatdunnit ... Alexander Knox was authentic and efficient in the part of Professor Lazard and James Maxwell looked splendidly scientific and full of authority as the forensic expert, Dr. Fox. As the young man suspected of murder, Derrick Sherwin gave a strong, well-defined performance, but Ellen Macintosh as his wife seemed constricted and stilted almost until her last scene.
Elizabeth Weaver was given little scope as Dr. Coliton, but perhaps she will have more consideration in later scripts.
Generally well directed by Lionel Harris, it was quite a promising production. When shall we see The Shape I wonder.”
Meanwhile, the Crewe Chronicle (July 25th) felt “the first of Rediffusion’s dabbles in forensic science… looked fairly promising, although” [the recent switch to 50 minute episodes for drama series evidently being a bugbear] “stretching it out for sixty minutes is rather like putting lead weights round the feet of the cast and then expecting them to rumba. But view on regardless, bearing in mind that all thirteen stories are pure fiction though they are presented with the documentary-maker’s eye for minute detail.”

The Overview Effect
Observing Earth from space can alter an astronauts’ cosmic perspective, a mental shift known as the “Overview Effect.” First coined by space writer Frank White in 1987, the Overview Effect is described as a feeling of awe for our home planet and a sense of responsibility for taking care of it.
See Earth from the vantage point of our astronauts in these perspective-changing views:
Floating Free in Space
Astronaut Bruce McCandless II used his hands to control his movement above the Earth during the first-ever spacewalk that didn't use restrictive tethers and umbilicals. Fellow crew members aboard the space shuttle Challenger captured this image on Feb. 7, 1984, through windows on the flight deck.
Of his famous spacewalk, McCandless wrote in 2015: "My wife [Bernice] was at mission control, and there was quite a bit of apprehension. I wanted to say something similar to Neil [Armstrong] when he landed on the moon, so I said, 'It may have been a small step for Neil, but it’s a heck of a big leap for me.' That loosened the tension a bit."
Earth Reflections
Astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson looks through a window in the Cupola of the International Space Station (ISS). A blue and white part of Earth and the blackness of space are visible through the windows. The image was a self-portrait using natural light.
In a preflight interview for Expedition 23/24, Dyson said: “hands down, the best part about it is being able to look at that view every day and during the time frame we’ll be up there, hopefully, we’ll have a big bay window and much more opportunity to observe this beautiful planet.”
Taking in the View
As astronaut Nick Hague prepared to conclude his six-month stay aboard the ISS, he shared this photo saying: "Today is my last Monday living on this orbiting laboratory and I’m soaking up my final views. The @Space_Station is truly an engineering marvel. #MondayMotivation."
He and Expedition 60 and Soyuz commander Alexey Ovchinin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos completed a 203-day mission, spanning 3,248 orbits of Earth, and a journey of 80.8 million miles.
Earthrise
On Dec. 24, 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders became the first humans to witness the Earth rising above the Moon's surface.
Anders, photographing the Moon from the right-side window, caught sight of the view, and exclaimed: “Oh my God, look at that picture over there! There’s the Earth comin’ up. Wow, is that pretty!”
The Blue Marble
Besides Earthrise, the Blue Marble is probably the most famous image of Earth that NASA has produced. Taken by the Apollo 17 crew on their way to the Moon in 1972, the Blue Marble and other NASA imagery of Earth has been credited by some with helping to fuel the environmental movement.

+ “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.’ ― Eleanor Roosevelt
2022 | A Year in Review
What a year 2022 has been. For me, it has been year of great growth and achievement. As I look back across the year, I share with you all these wonderful moments:
- In January I was able to travel for the first-time post pandemic to Bali Indonesia, where it was great to re-connect with the island of the gods.
- In late January, I was invited as a guest on Dr Benjamin Freud’s Coconut Thinking podcast. Benjamin is the founder of Coconut Thinking, an organisation committed to purposeful thinking and action that contribute to the welfare of the bio collective.
- In February, a School for tomorrow. launched their dynamic #Voyage App - designed to be a purpose-driven way for secondary and tertiary students to plan their future, experience life, self-regulate & ultimately thrive. The best part is it's FREE!
- In February, we launched Series Nine of our Game Changers podcast featuring leading Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath, former Director of Wellbeing and prolific writer Daisy Turnbull, decorated teacher and author Oliver Lovell, 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian Australian and Organisational Psychologist Christine Yeung, founder and CEO at The Man Cave Hunter Johnson, highly accomplished New Zealand Principal Sarah Martin, global inclusion expert Daniel Sobel, Executive Director at the Centre for Transformative Teaching and Learning in the USA Glenn Whitman, celebrated Australian Chef Scott Pickett and Commissioner for Children and Young People SA Helen Connolly. During this period the podcast hit 250,000 plus listens.
- In February, I presented to the Australia Circular Economy (ACE) Education for systematic change group about a School for tomorrow’s partnership with Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) in the development of an entrepreneurial model of learning, titled Limitless. ACE is part of the Planet Ark Environmental Foundation. ACE’s Education for systemic change group aims to bring together those who aspire to transform our education systems to meet the needs of society for a more sustainable future. A School for tomorrow’s partnership with CESA’s Limitless project is primarily designing an innovative learning model, across primary and secondary, that fosters social entrepreneurs who establish enterprises that purposefully engage with their communities to solve complex social, cultural, and environmental problems by adding value to the lives of all whiles contributing to a more just and loving world.
- In March, Game Changers were featured in the Educational Podcast corner at the 2022 World Education Summit, the largest online education event in the world. Co-host Phil Cummins and I focused on the notion of Continuous Learning.
- In March, I presented a keynote titled “Striving to be Remarkable”, focused on daring leadership, on the Balkan Education Stage at Osiris Education’s 2022 World Education Summit. His keynote has now been viewed over 10,000 times since the date of release.
- In March I turned 50. In May interstate friends threw a surprise black tie birthday event, which included numerous past students, colleagues, friends and family.
- In April, with Dr Phil Cummins we were featured guests for Future Anything’s Live Learning event. With Founder and CEO Nicole Dyson we explored what ‘future ready’ schools should be leaning into to create teachers, students and communities that thrive.
- In May I was honoured to be listed in the The Educator’s inaugural Top 50 Most Influential Educators Award across the entire Australian education sector. The Award focuses on individuals who have had the strongest impact in creating a reformative teaching and learning culture in the last 18 months.
- In May, I was interviewed by highly decorated Primary School Principal, Henryk Gossek for The Viewpoint podcast, where he shared insights into the work of a School for tomorrow, learnings from Game Changers guests and personal vulnerability.
- In March I continued our work in partnership with Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) in the design and implementation of a social entrepreneurial model of learning across Catholic primary and secondary schools in South Australia (SA). Throughout 2022 myself, Dr Phil Cummins, and the core team at CESA focused on refining all curriculum design toolkit resources. This included partnering with CESA and Enlightening Education to develop a highly interactive Design Thinking Digital Toolkit for South Australian educators and students in Catholic schools. In Term 3 we commenced a process of supporting pilot schools throughout SA in trailing and testing the entrepreneurial model of learning, titled Limitless Possibilities. This significant project explicitly aligns the Australia Curriculum and SACE achievement standards and performance standards respectfully with CESA’s Learning, Leading & Living Key Capabilities, Catholic Social Teachings, and social entrepreneurship.
- In May, we launched Series Ten of our Game Changers podcast featuring social impact powerhouse Ronni Kahn AO, global thought leader Graham Martin-Brown, the amazing personal coach for female leaders Kemi Nekvapil, the director of Woodleigh Institute Dr Richard Owen, ABC broadcaster & lawyer Lisa Leong, Australian creative guru Adam Ferrier, Rhodes Scholar & DEI champion Jamie Beaton, a Hot Listed deputy principal Lorna Beegan, PwC future of work lead Dr Ben Hamer and a young change agent advocate Margaret O’Brien. After the panel session I facilitated a workshop about leadership required in today’s schooling.

In Game Changers: Leading Today’s Learning for Tomorrow’s World, Phil and I distil years of professional practice and research into a roadmap for leadership that changes the game of school. Centring the character and purpose of leaders in education, we make the case for leadership that strengthens, informs, orientates, focuses, aligns, and enriches – courageous leadership that prepares the young people in our care for the world they will inhabit tomorrow.
- In November a School for tomorrow released a new mini paper From Engagement to Empowerment where we explore the value for educating for voice, agency, and advocacy in our schools.
- Managed all social media for Game Changers, Twitter and Instagram and a School for tomorrow, Twitter and LinkedIn.
- Read many books with Time Wise by Amantha Imber, What We Owe The Future by William MacAskill, After The Rain by Axelandra Elle and Not Now, Not Ever by Julia Gillard the stand outs.

Go gently my friends. Know you are enough. And always remember to be kind.
Adriano xx

The Saint: The High Fence (2.23, ITC, 1964)
"Why should I co-operate? Give me one good reason."
"Withholding information is a serious offence!"
"Then arrest me. Go ahead. Put me in jail, hound me the way you did Johnny! Six arrests..."
"Johnny was a confirmed criminal -"
"He was sick and he was frightened, he needed help! All he got was persecution."
#the saint#the high fence#1964#leslie charteris#itc#harry w. junkin#james hill#roger moore#james villiers#suzanne lloyd#ivor dean#reginald beckwith#stanley meadows#harry towb#dyson lovell#clare kelly#peter jeffrey#hazel hughes#richard poore#one of the episodes i most clearly remember from previous viewings‚ probably because of a twist that for once i didn't see coming#(i was young and naive!). Teal is back‚ peppermints in tow‚ and facing off against an unusually uptight James Villiers as one of the most#antagonistic policemen the series has seen so far. actually this whole episode is surprisingly critical of the police; where they're often#depicted as less able than Simon‚ here they're downright negligent and display a complete lack of grace or tact when talking to the#innocents (or at least only mildly guilty) caught up in the case. Harry Towb's nervous safecracker is notably shown in a more sympathetic#light than the officers who arrest him. this one also benefits from a great cast of perhaps lesser known Brit tv royalty; Jeffreys would go#on to bigger and better‚ as would Meadows‚ but actors like Towb and Lovell were great character players who never seemed to hit the big#time in the way they deserved. Suzanne Lloyd was a repeat guest star for the series (6 eps in all!) but this is one of her best outings#as she actually gets quite a bit to do‚ including some undercover work‚ and has one of the more developed characterisations of Simon's many#lady friends. Clare Kelly was often in comic work but here she gives a wonderful performance as a grieving widow full of rage

The White Princess Diaries - Ep 1 Part 1 - No - its not him!!
The White Princess Diaries….Ep 1 Part 1
(Subtitled – No-he’s not in it)
Welcome, my faithful diary friends. It’s been a while. And although our dearly loved Aneurard is now long departed after the combined dastardly deeds of M&S and Henry Chewdor – his memory still lives on in billowy tents all around the land.
So – now we have a squeakwal – The White Princess. The story of what happened to Mini Lizzie and all our dear friends after the world ended on 22nd August 1485 (or sometime around that date in 2013…which was quite possibly where a lot of our worlds actually started – remember “Do you love me Anne – and the King? Get on your horse or I will have you bound and gagged and thrown into a litter…Obviously…) Sigh!
Well then – as I know a lot of you can’t see the new Starz version of what may (or probably didn’t) happen after that snowstorm in August 1485 – let me see if I transport you into that world and make you feel like you are there. If only we could go back – preferably to August 21st 1485 with a kalishnikov)
Sitting comfortably? SB at the ready? Ferrero Rocher on hand? Let’s go back in time…….
We are told it is two days since King Aneurard was killed (sob) at Bosworth Field. Cut to Woodville Manor – North Yorkshire where Mini-Lizzie (ish) is staring out over the river. (Ok Ok I know already. Look – lets give Emma Frost the benefit of the doubt and assume that Woodville Manor is in the grounds of Sheriff Hutton – or at least somewhere near Warwick).
So - still two days after the Battle of Bosworth where the King of Gorgeousness was unjustly not employed to appear in this sequel. Its more than regicide it’s a bloody crime! He is no w-hair to be seen. Not even in flashback.
Well – apart from some hair (not his) and some skin (not his) then shots of not him being killed in battle with not his armour on – and then killed again for good measure with his armour off! Why not him was wandering around in snow in the middle of the holiday season without his pauldrons we will never know – despite what Thomas More or David Starkey tell us.
Back in Yorkshire (snigger) Mini-Lizzie (ish) is looking at her hand, obviously dreaming of wearing a big, stonking Ricardian ring. A white rose? A boar maybe? A set of Henry Tudors…...? But hark….here come soldiers! But whose? Oh the drama! Its like waiting to see which well loved character is killed off in Game of Thrones (maybe a slight over estimation there)
Cut to inside the manor house and here we encounter – all clad in their very best White Company night attire - er – Ex Queen Sisterbeth Woodville – once the witch-queen of England and suddenly her young son, Parkin Warden, has lost the towel he was so fond of wearing and no wonder! He has gone blond – (those bloody Leicester wigmakers get everywhere and I bet he has blue eyes) and now he must be hidden from the nasty Tudor soldiers who are rampaging towards the manor in true Ironclad style.
Ex-Queen Sisterbeth grabs Parkin - who she decides must to go to Turney……???... (Ok Tournai )– on his own! And without so much as an Oyster Card! Bloody hell – he’s only about seven and I didn’t go on a bus on my own until I was twenty two!
But the soldiers are speaking in best Danish/French/Egyptian (just to reinforce the fact that Chewdor had to import his own flat-pack army from abroad) or something - but they will never find Parkin as they can only smell women. A handy talent that! But not one that going to help Chewdor very much.
Well bugger my doublet! It’s Stanley! Lord Thomas himself and he appears to have found his brother. Stanley has shrunk and is beardless –well that’s what happens when you have to boil yourself to rid your skin of the stain of treachery!
And with William Stanley is there too! ( where has he been for the last 10 episodes?) Mind you as they both bear no resemblance to the people they were in TWQ - it is no surprise. They say battle changes you….it certainly changed them! It is a good job somebody kindly let us all know who they were by addressing them by their full names in true TWQ style so we knew who they were/are. A handy, plot shaping tool.
Unfortunately, they are going to drag Lizzie-Mini-ish off by the hair to her new bridegroom. Dear me - lets hope those extensions hold!
Now the men are off to Wingfield in Suffolk. For those that don’t understand the relevance of this – all you need to know is that is is probably near Warwick. (Ok I know where this is going. Its going to introduce a load of people who were never mentioned in TWQ but are suddenly relevant to the plot. Yes – there is one…)
The men are looking for the Earl of Warwick (told you). Bloody useless all of them. They need to know that a) one of them is dead and buried in Bisham and b) the other one is in Sheriff…sorry Woodville Manor ….Yorkshire. Or should have been – but of course he suddenly appears with his sister, who we last saw bouncing on her daddys knee – obviously.
And so we meet the ‘De La Pool’ family. There is John de la Olympic Sized Swimming Pool (Senior) and John de la Paddling Pool (Junior). He, of course, was Aneurard’s heir and in honour of this he has dyed his beard ginger…you know – the colour of Aneurin Bru! Ah loyaltie never dies! Good old John! Where have you been? (?????) Authors note: We appear to be now getting to meet so may new people who we never even knew existed before that at this rate we will soon be introduced to Francis Lovell! You know – the guy that was (or should have been) Aneurard’s best mate for at least six of the last 10 episodes of TWQ! Him!
But at least our old friend Duchess ‘Dyson’ Cecily is there - and she is indeed our old friend Duchess Dyson - but she’s been scared hatless. That's what happens when one son murders another - one dies after a fish supper and every man in Leicestershire and Wales claims to have struck the blow that killed the last one
However, she has not changed a bit (honestly) only is now sporting a rather splendid York Plait – the medieval version of a Chelsea Bun. It’s a family reunion with George’s children are there (obviously) and Richard’s sister Elizabeth too. Now you will recognise her as you haven’t seen her before….
Ooh now (apparently) it’s Grasper Chewdor! Well I think it is because frankly he’s a lot rounder and dresses a bit better and has someone with him who uses Rory of Buckingham’s hairdresser. They have all arrived early for the battle – at least Tudor did because he made himself king from the day before he actually got loads of other people to kill everyone and make him king. So everyone else is a traitor – nah na na nah nah!
Cut to Henry himself at Westminster – for our purposes is am going to call him King Who?- as he looks more like King John than Henry Chewdor (TWQ version) ever did – and I don’t want you to get confused. Ok?
He is dressed very grandly. Obviously he must have paid a quick visit to that well known designer royalty shop “You and Whose Armarni” and picked up a new cloak or two – and good old – not the old – but old - Mad Mags is with him – at least I think it is her – I have definitely seen her before. It will come to me….
She has gained in stature now she is Mad Mags Regina – in fact she’s about 1’6” taller so this battle stuff can’t be all this bad as everyone has had a bit of a makeover. Bosworth Bonus! To be continued….
