The grasses in the Valley of the Four Winds swayed with the billowing wind that swirled around the monk. He sat in mediation, eyes closed and spirit open to the guidance of the August Celestials.

Things were different now. He was a lone wolf, and after having his heart broken time and again, he decided it was best to keep people with certain intentions at arm’s length. There would never be another Daniel, and there could never be true peace for people like him or his brothers so long as the Legion still threatened the world.

Once upon a time, he had lived there instead of Krasarang. He had been married to a man that loved him very much, whom he loved with all of his heart, and they were planning a life together. There were talks of children, they had a dog named Cheddar, trained together and worked with the locals, building a name for themselves. Both men had been through hell and back, and though they weren’t perfect, making mistakes as humans were bound to, they were perfect for each other.

The Legion took everything. Daniel was gone, the future they envisioned together was decimated with the swift swing of a Fel Lord’s axe, a nebulous act that Allan could no longer recal. The despair of losing everything Allan held so dear in just a few short minutes broke him enough to crack that shell of strength he’d so carefully built, and it let the Nightmare in.

The past few weeks had been difficult. Not so much difficult as long and hard-fought. He had been resolved to stay away from the Legion conflict for fear of falling under their corruption again, but all of that changed when he saw that not all demons were under the Legion’s thumb.

Lady Boudreaux had employed him to heal the body of a sin’dorei Illidari named Xilarian, and the process had been harrowing for everyone involved. He saw just how hard they fought against the corruption that threatened to end this world, and it made him realize that if he didn’t take the risk, he risked dying anyway. Argus loomed in the skies over head and he remembered Xilarian’s broken body. He wished he had been strong enough to heal Daniel when he was culled too soon from this world, but he could still save other people, and he could still help save this world. If not for himself, for the memory of his husband that would live inside of him forever.

It was with an iron will that he gathered his wits about him. A flock of cranes flew away from the grasses, fluttering and shedding a few downy feathers that drifted back to the earth, and for an instant, he thought he saw the glimmer of red feathers in their wake. Perhaps it was Chi-Ji’s blessing for him to go as Allan rose to his feet slowly. His stormy gaze followed them until they disappeared off into the distance and he gave a small bow to whatever spirits were watching before making his way to Dalaran once more. The Vindicaar awaited, and they needed menders and fighters like him.
