Utrecht String Quartet play Beautiful Music
I had the greatest of pleasure to interview Sebastian Koloski of the Utrecht String Quartet whilst he was touring in Australia. Sebastian Koloski was born in Bremen, Germany, studied cello at the Musikhochschule Freiburg with Christoph Henkel and graduated in the U.S.A. with Aldo Parisot. Returning to Europe he worked as a regular free-lance cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Sebastian now lives in the Netherlands where he co-founded the Utrecht String Quartet. Beside his chamber music career he enjoys free-lance work at the opera of Amsterdam, the Orchestras of the Dutch Radio and the Orquestra de Cadaques, Spain. Robert is also Head of the Chamber Music Department at the Conservatory of Utrecht
Where and when did you fall in love with music? Lot’s of listening and activities with music in and around my home since early childhood Where did you study music? Germany and the USA
Why the Cello? First I played the violin but I preferred to sit down while practicing.... the timbre and colour of the cello sound speaks to me the most Do you have musical heroes? Yes many.... Casals, Harnoncourt, Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Yo Yo Ma, Kleiber, Bernstein, Sarah Vaughan.... Which of the pieces you play is your favourite? No way to choose one!! Beethoven op 59/2, Bartók nr.2, Glazunov nr. 5, Tanejew op.14 and many more... https://youtu.be/4MM8HvhoKS0 For more of the Utrecht String Quartet's music try here. For their web site click here. Which is the favourite place that your music has taken you to? Kuhmo, Finland and Sydney, Australia
Are you from Utrecht? Not born and raised but I have lived for more than 30 years in or around Utrecht Is Utrecht a particularly musical city? Utrecht breathes a very diverse, inspiring and active musical life Does Utrecht inspire you? Yes the diversity in the many cultural activities in a relatively small place is impressive and inspiring Where is your favourite place in Utrecht? Le Jardin - Mariaplaats What would be a perfect day in Utrecht for you? Sunny, 25 degrees - "Culturele zondag" happenings throughout the city
Does Utrecht do enough for music, especially classical music? I think the city offers a lot, but do people take enough time and have the urge to come to all activities? Would you like to see more activities? First there has to be more high quality and regular music- and cultural education in all school levels to create a bigger audience and understanding Who should take the lead, Municipality, Musicians, Schools, Universities? A round table with professionals and non-professionals What advice would you give to those who want to follow a career in classical music? Look for best teachers and institutions to be in contact with divers and high quality artists The Utrecht String Quartet is one of the most renowned chamber-music ensembles in the world, known internationally for its versatile and dynamic approach. Resident in the Netherlands, the musical world of the Utrecht String Quartet is borderless and boundless, and whichever work its musicians choose to play in the genre of string-quartet music, it is their general policy to avoid any hint of treating them like museum exhibits. Even when it comes to traditional works, the musicians succeed, time and again, in discovering elements that can be interpreted anew, or in finding unusual concert locations in which to perform them. However, it is mainly because of their search for lost or forgotten repertoire and for their collaboration with contemporary composers that the members of the Utrecht String Quartet have gained their excellent reputation in the music world. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Music Concert Hall
Last night I attended a Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra performance at the Chamber Music Concert Hall. There were several choices for getting there from my apartment. U-Bahn wasn’t one of them. At night, I’m more confident taking U-Bahn rather than other means of transportation and am a bit leery of walking in the dark between connections.
