New wasp species named after Doctor Who villain
‘Dalek’ wasps are among 815 new species described by Natural History Museum scientists in 2023
Nilima Marshall - 4 hours ago
Fourteen newly discovered species of wasps have been named after the villainous Daleks from Doctor Who to mark the 60th anniversary of the popular sci-fi series.
The insects, which bear the genus “Dalek”, are among the 619 new wasp species described this year by London’s Natural History Museum (NHM).
An alien warrior race of mutants, the Daleks are the formidable bad guys in BBC’s long-running TV show.
I thought it was a good name for a genus and a bit of fun having been a big fan of Doctor Who in my early years
Dr John Noyes, NHM
One particular species of wasp from Costa Rica called Dalek nationi also honours Terry Nation, the Welsh screenwriter and novelist who created the mutant race that terrified children for the past six decades.
Dr John Noyes, scientific associate at the NHM, said: “I thought it was a good name for a genus and a bit of fun having been a big fan of Doctor Who in my early years.”
A total of 815 new species were described by NHM scientists in 2023, including a 407-million-year-old parasitic fungus named after children’s author Beatrix Potter.
Potteromyces asteroxylicola was discovered infecting the roots of ancient plants and is thought to be the earliest disease-causing fungus ever discovered.
The researchers said they wanted to honour Potter’s reputation as a dedicated mycologist – someone who studies and works with fungi.
Dr Christine Strullu-Derrien, scientific associate at the NHM, who helped identify the new Potter fungus, said: “Naming this important species after Beatrix Potter seems a fitting tribute to her remarkable work and commitment to piecing together the secrets of fungi.”
Highlights also include fossil remains of a new dinosaur species found on the Isle of Wight, which was named Vectipelta barretti after NHM Professor Paul Barrett who worked there for two decades.
It is first the dinosaur discovered on the island for 142 years.
Other notable discoveries also include fossil remains of a giant penguin called Kumimanu fordycei – believed to be the largest penguin that ever lived – and nine new species of bristle worms including two bone-eating worms.
The researchers also report new species being discovered in “unremarkable” urban environments, including a stick insect called Micropodacanthus tweedae that was found on the side of a bin in Australia, and a moth that was located in Ealing, west London, called Tachystola mulliganae, which turned out be a new species native to Western Australia.
T. mulliganae is named after Barbara Mulligan, a lifelong moth enthusiast who discovered the species.
Mark Sterling, a scientific associate at NHM, described the finding as “real coup for citizen science”.
The new species descriptions contributed to the 722 new research papers released by the NHM over the past 12 months.

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 54
The last two bullets contains details from the most recent Ninth Doctor boxset, specifically Swipe Right and Archipelago. Please scroll past them if you don't want to see them. :)
By some accounts, Bruce Springsteen served as United States President in the early 2000s. (Novel: Interference - Book One)
An incredibly dangerous mutation in the Daleks that threatened the whole universe started when a Dalek was stung by a wasp. (Audio: The Mutant Phase)
While in Paris, the Seventh Doctor observed the Fourth Doctor, Romana, and Duggan, and he picked up a picture of Romana when his Fourth dropped it. This picture would later be found by Anji Kapoor and later his Eighth. The Eighth Doctor could not remember who it was because he had been having memory problems at the time but kept the picture anyway. (Short story: Notre Dame du Temps)
The Fifth Doctor accidentally killed the entire Scintillan race because he couldn't see them. (Audio: Omega)
The Toymaker trapped the Spice Girls in "Spice Up Your Life." (Novel: The Giggle)
The Tenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver ended up in San Juan after being discarded in Leadworth. Charlie Sato had stolen it from some aliens and was on the run, and while doing so, he ran into the Eighth Doctor. Thus, the Tenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver eventually ended up in a drawer in the Eighth Doctor’s TARDIS. (Audio: The Turn of the Screw)
The Shalka Doctor had fallen in love with the President's daughter, but she had been killed by an alien race with nearly all the other Time Lords. While the other Time Lords had their memories stored in the Matrix, the President's daughter was truly dead. (TV: Scream of the Shalka; Short story: Doctor Who - The Ninth Doctor)
The Tenth Doctor can recall hunting werewolves with Jane Austen. He remembers that she was unusually sadistic, kept trophies from her victims, and was able to wrestle a werewolf without staining her lace. They also dealt with a vampire countess and an assassin in a similar style. The Doctor would have invited her on board the TARDIS if she didn't terrify him. (Audio: Expiry Dating)
Before Erimem became a proper companion, the Fifth Doctor intended to drop her off at the Braxiatel Collection. (Audio: The Church and the Crown)
After the events of The Giggle, the Toymaker is biding his time and waiting for his next game. (Novel: The Giggle)
By some accounts, the Valeyard "splintered" from the Doctor at some point prior to his final regeneration and thus cannot regenerate himself. (Audio: Every Dark Thought)
The Fifteenth Doctor once tried to take Ruby to a night of partying at the Scandi Superclub, where Avicii, Loreen, and Måns Zelmerlöw are members, but the TARDIS instead materialized in the 19th century. They ran into Hans Christian Andersen. (Comic: The Hans of Fear)
Stew Ferguson was a milkman who witnessed Rose Tyler's appearance in The Stolen Earth. He eventually became a cleaner and then witnessed the Fourteenth Doctor materialize in his TARDIS. (Novel: The Star Beast)
The Ninth Doctor is aromantic!!! (Audio: Swipe Right)
River Song recognized the Doctor’s Gladstone bag as a gift from Gillian and John. (Audio: Archipelago) And by that she means Gillian and John Who!!!!!

I love it when Doctor Who is just stupid. Just fully understands, and tells you wholeheartedly, that it is a ridiculous programme that no one should take seriously. The Daleks are fighting robot Dracula and the Doctor’s defeating Evil Bertie Bassett with lemonade and an alien wasp with psychic powers is impregnating a human woman and everyone’s riding Segways to the final boss chamber. And this horrible creature is the Beep Of All The Meeps and David Tennant has yaoi hands and our villain is dressed as a drum major and dancing to the Spice Girls even though that has nothing whatsoever to do with his evil gimmick and yes. This is it. This is television. What bliss
#doctor who#doctor who special#dw#doctor who 60th anniversary#this is what i want. so bored of lore shakeups and Doctor Angst and special effects that actually look good#i want photobooth filters and lines that would make my mother walk out of the room swearing#(she watched the series 3 finale and swore off the entire show upon hearing the words ‘black hole converter’. a wiser woman than i really)

fascinated that in toeing the line of "the doctor both is and is not asexual, and because the show is ostensibly sexier now there should be imagery of especially david tennant and various women (shockingly no men with ten) smooshing lips," it means that the doctor only ever instigates a kiss when it's got some scifi-type reason behind it, even starting with nine removing the time vortex from rose.
so only counting lip-to-lip contact for a second here*:
jack kisses the doctor (the parting of the ways)
nine removes the time vortex from rose (the parting of the ways)
cassandra kisses the doctor (new earth)
madame de pompadour kisses the doctor (the girl in the fireplace)
jackie kisses the doctor (army of ghosts)
the doctor leaves a DNA print on martha (smith and jones)
martha gives the doctor cpr (smith and jones)
john smith kisses joan (human nature)
astrid kisses the doctor (voyage of the damned)
the doctor kisses astrid goodbye as she dies (voyage of the damned -- only instigation on the doctor's part of any kiss)**
donna shocks the doctor out of being poisoned (unicorn and the wasp)
christina de souza kisses the doctor in planet of the dead and is overall very flirtatious at him in a way that almost feels like idk. an anti-romance plot. it's like everything that came before (and tbh... also amy and river song) in terms of "sexy" doctor-and-companion tension is lampshaded and made a bit silly. I don't know if this is just because the actress and dtennant have minus chemistry, but it's very funny that this is the final flirting + kiss and it's so very... "shrug, you're not going to be my companion, okay, goodbye"
*I think the only time the doctor even jokingly talks about kissing is in dalek's of manhatten, when martha and bby andrew garfield/frank have been captured and the doctor arrives. martha expresses her relief, and the doctor says something along the lines of: "well, you can kiss me later. you too frank, if you want." this is to diffuse a very scary/tense situation
**I tend to read the astrid final kiss as a kindness/comfort rather than romantic interest or sexual interest. because she is dying. and she kissed the doctor earlier, and is very scared
but wait! tentoo and rose were really going at it, you say! tentoo is part human/specifically human in a donna sense. tentoo is also super up for settling down and having a monogamous relationship, which isn't exactly the doctor's style in any regeneration. so yeah.. tentoo is another part of the tightrope, just like john smith. change the doctor into someone who is almost-but-not-quite the same, enough plausible deniability and voila, it's almost like the doctor is kissing someone, but crucially, the doctor still Is Not. in tentoo's case, the doctor is in fact watching it happen with a somewhat despondent look, before turning and leaving without waiting for rose to say goodbye. because, youknow. canonically the doctor cannot give rose what she wants (because he's not alloromantic/allosexual because he's an immortal alien) so it's better just to leave
lastly flirting: the doctor does flirt, but not often. the most flirtatious the doctor gets outside of above kissing line is when jack briefly joins nine and rose, and I'd call that the jack-contagion (affectionately, it's a good thing). ten, actually, flirts... less. comparably. (and hilariously is annoyed that jack flirts so much around him) a bit with rose in christmas invasion and new earth, but apart from the "sexy" wink, not very overtly. I mean, maybe I'm very ace, but I think they do banter rather than flirting. the one time the doctor interprets something as flirting that funnily enough isn't is when rose is talking to a cat. the doctor similarly gets flirted at (madame de pompadour, shakespeare code, martha several times, health and safety, silence of the library) but doesn't tend to enjoy it or often even notice it

Almost/Could have been Companion: Nominations
It's nomination time: Who is the Best Almost Companion
Who would you like to have seen become a companion?
Rules:
Must have met the Doctor
I know Jago and Litefoot are popular but I am not including anyone from Talons as a matter of principle
Not someone you could already call a companion (some exceptions may be made on a case by case basis) (if they are TV characters who are companions only in the EU that will be allowed)
Not necessary, but ideally someone who would have said yes in the right circumstances
There's no other restrictions on the kinds of characters to include, just anyone you wanted to come on further adventures in the TARDIS
Nominations will close in 24 hours (17:15 BST (UTC+1), 13/10)

What is the greatest Doctor Who story ever told?
Everything has been split into groups of 32 that I think are of similar levels of notoritiy, but likely not popularity. Seeding within the groups decides the matches. At the end of the round groups are paired up and mashed together to do it all again.
What that means right now is the order the matches below are listed in has no baring on what they'll be against in the next round
There will be 16 matches a day with Fridays off
Lastly, you can still submit propaganda for posts here

ok i'll bite and start watching doctor who again.
any recs?
particularly of episodes to avoid if one is absolutely unable to watch anything horror-like? (i remember watching the Empty Child when i was younger and being traumatized, for example)
you are in luck. i have a whole list.
this only consists of new who episodes (because i haven't watched old who). also if you decide to rewatch the full series, keep in mind the specials are NOT skippable and in fact contain quite important moments
of course i recommend watching the whole show, but these are particularly good or important episodes!
in bold are particular highlights (as in particularly good episodes according to me) or important episodes. basically, the short list is the bold titles
this was an already-made list that i did for a friend a while ago, and it's made up mostly of standalone episodes. please tell me if you want more plot-oriented recs!
do not watch list at the end
onwards:
Episodes to watch (specifically):
S1E01 Rose (intro, good for setting up the themes and the show)
S1E06 Dalek (good, bit of plot + callback to old who)
S1E08 Father's Day (maybe hard without context?)
S2EX The Runaway Bride (2006 Xmas special, stands alone)
S3E08 Human Nature/S3E09 The Family of Blood (two-parter, maybe slightly icky for you. am willing to give you more details if you want them. watch at your own risk)
S3EX Voyage of the Damned (2007 Xmas special, stands alone)
S4E07 The Unicorn and the Wasp (just 1920s fun it's great)
S4E16 The Waters of Mars (plot-heavy esp at the end but my favourite episode ever)
S5E01 The Eleventh Hour
S5E10 Vincent and the Doctor
(moffat's seasons were very much arcs and plot-heavy)
The Day of the Doctor
S8E05 Time Heist
(s9 unwatchable without previous seasons)
S10E01 The Pilot (for the first appearance of a fun companion, not that great but it's a soft reboot so good to get back into Doctor Who)
S11E01 The Woman Who Fell to Earth
S11E04 Rosa
S11E06 Demons of the Punjab
(s12 unfortunately not that good, and s13 is a whole Thing without standalone episodes)
❌ DO NOT WATCH (if you dislike horror) ❌
S1E09 The Empty Child
S1E10 The Doctor Dances
S3E10 Blink (highlight but the weeping angels are terrifying)
S4E08 Silence in the Library/S4E09 Forest of the Dead (my 2nd favourite episode ever) (this one is definitely a bit horror. if you didn't like the empty child do not watch this)
S4E10 Midnight (psychological horror. do not watch if you have a hard time with horror. also one of the best episodes of modern who)
S5E04 The Time of Angels/S5E05 Flesh and Stone (the angels again)
S6E05 The Rebel Flesh/S6E06 The Almost People
S6E09 Night Terrors (not my thing)
S6E11 The God Complex
S10E04 Knock Knock (not that hard horror? but similar to the empty child so you probably won't like it)
⚠️ WATCH WITH CAUTION ⚠️ (i think you can watch these, but be careful)
S2E04 The Girl in the Fireplace (maybe a bit too plot-heavy?)
S2E05 Rise of the Cybermen/S2E06 The Age of Steel
S2E07 The Idiot's Lantern (not particularly great, but on this list because of a face-stealing lifeform)
S7E07 The Bells of St John (this one is safer than others on this list, but putting it here as a warning)
S7E10 Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS (not very horrifying, but better safe than sorry)
S8E08 Mummy on the Orient Express
S9E11 Heaven Sent
S10E02 Smile
#thank you so much for asking this was a pleasure to compile#❤️❤️❤️#doctor who#dw#masterpost#hope this answers your question!

Speed-running Doctor Who - 10th Doctor
A quick and dirty guide for those who want to get into the show, but don't want to watch everything from the beginning.
For Those Who Just Wanna Get An Idea of the Era
The Unicorn and the Wasp - S30E7
Look, if you're only going to watch one Tenth Doctor story then it needs to be one with Donna Noble in it, and this one is fairly continuity lite to start you off with.
Plot Important Episodes
Entrances, Exits, Enemies, Lore Drops, and Character Development
The Christmas Invasion - 2005 Xmas Special (Tenth Doctor's introduction and an important development in Harriet's story arc)
New Earth - S28E1 (the return of Cassandra and the introduction of New Earth and the Face of Boe)
Tooth and Claw - S28E2 (kicks off the Torchwood arc)
School Reunion - S28E3 (the return of Sarah Jane and K-9, and Mickey officially joins the Tardis)
The Girl in the Fireplace - S28E4 (introduces the clockwork monsters)
Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel - S28E5&E6 (reintroduces the Cybermen, Pete Tyler, and the idea of parallel worlds)
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - S28E8&E9 (introduces the Ood)
Love & Monsters - S28E10 (character development for Jackie)
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - S28E12&E13 (the conclusion of the Torchwood arc, the parallel universe arc, introduces the Cult of Skaro, and Rose leaves the Tardis)
The Runaway Bride - 2006 Xmas Special (Meet Donna Noble)
Smith and Jones - S29E1 (Martha's introduction)
The Shakespeare Code - S29E2 (Martha's first trip in the Tardis)
Gridlock - S29E3 (the return of New Earth, the Macra, and the Face of Boe. Also the Doctor tells Martha his tragic backstory)
Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks - S29E4&E5 (second part of the Cult of Skaro trilogy)
The Lazarus Experiment - E29E6 (brings Martha's family troubles to the fore and establishes her mom as an antagonist while starting the Harold Saxon arc)
Human Nature/The Family of Blood - S29E8&E9 (character development for both Martha and the Doctor, introduces the idea of the Chameleon Arch)
Blink - S29E10 (meet the Weeping Angels)
Utopia - S29E11 (Derek Jacobi is back and so is Captain Jack)
The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords - S29E12&E13 (meet Harold Saxon... aka The Simm Master. Martha leaves the Tardis at the end)
Voyage of the Damned - 2007 Xmas Special (the Doctor meets Wilf for the first time)
Partners in Crime - S30E1 (Donna is back!)
The Fires of Pompeii - S30E2 (Donna's first real trip in the Tardis and character development for the Doctor)
Planet of the Ood - S30E3 (Return of the Ood and a squeal to The Sensorites)
The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky - S30E4&E5 (the Sontarans are reintroduced and Martha comes back for a bit)
The Doctor's Daughter - S30E6 (the only appearance of the Doctor's daughter, Jenny)
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - S30E8&E9 (River Song's introduction)
Midnight - E30E10 (character development for the Doctor)
Turn Left - E30E11 (character development for Donna and the return of Rose)
The Stolen Earth/Journey's End - E30E12&E13 (the last part of the Cult of Sakro arc, the reintroduction of Davros, the return of Jack, Mickey, Jackie, Pete, Sarah Jane, and Harriet, the conclusion of the Doctor/Donna arc, the introduction of the doctor's clone, and the Doctor's finale goodbye to Rose)
The Waters of Mars - 2009 Special (character development for the Doctor)
The End of Time - 2010 Holiday Special (Both The Master and the Time Lords return, The Tenth Doctor reintegrates, we say goodbye to Wilf, and Donna finally gets married)
Personal Favorite and Least Favorite Stories
Because one man's trash is another man's treasure and vice versa
Favorite: The Next Doctor - 2008 Xmas Special
Least Favorite: The Idiot's Lantern - S28E7
(disclaimer: no spin-offs or extended universe stuff was considered when making this list)

Judging Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor
Disclaimer: This is all in good fun and I don't take fandom serious
Good episodes I like
New Earth - Cat nuns! The Doctor at his silliest! The return of Cassandra! Horrifying sentient clone people infected with every disease at once! What more could you want?
School Reunion - Sarah Jane Smith!!!!! This one does such a good job of showing the tragedy inherent to traveling with the Doctor, but how they'd all choose it anyway.
The Idiot's Lantern - another good balance of silly and creepy, and so very sad but like in a fixable way this time
Fear Her - I have heard this one is unpopular and I don't get it?? It's sad lonely children struggling to cope and accidentally hurting people. It feels very sweet and relatable and a nice filler type episode
Smith and Jones - this is SUCH a good intro for Martha with her smarts and bravery! Also! Judoon! On the moon!
Gridlock - this introduces so many cultural aspects of New Earth, I love it. Also horrifying but hopeful. I may have a type.
Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks - this felt like a very classic dalek plot but still with the obligatory new and unexpected lore, and the love story b-plot was sweet
Blink - Again, everyone loves this one for a reason. Sooooo creepy.
Partners in Crime - their dynamic is so chaotic. They enable each other. It's great.
The Fires of Pompeii - Just a very good story
Planet of the Ood - So beautiful and so sad!
The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky - I maintain the genius school bit was unnecessary, but I liked the rest of it! The horror of relying on technology until it turns on you! Sontarans are great! Also Martha is in this one!
The Doctor's Daughter - Oh the inherent tragedy of a war long outlasting living memory that started only months ago! Also the Doctor being sad about his family!
The Unicorn and the Wasp - I am a sucker for anything fitting an Agatha Christie framework, and it had a great dose of Doctor Who weirdness
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - It's scary! It's sad! River is there and she loves him and she sacrifices herself for him the very first time he meets her and he'll know that every other time!!
Turn Left - My actual favorite genre of episode of anything is when shows create their own alternative universe of what if? Also! Donna is so so ordinary but the most important person in the universe!
The Stolen Earth/Journey's End - This was a powerful finale, and I loved seeing everyone he'd ever known come together. And also Donna's end was so beautifully tragic
The Next Doctor - This is kind of au-adjacent while still functioning in universe, and I love the all around confusion and hijinks
Bad Episodes I like
Tooth and Claw - The cult part of the plot feels a bit contrived and the episode is all over the place. But the royals are werewolves and we have Torchwood backstory!
The Girl in the Fireplace - The implied romance is forced and the story itself is flimsy, but I enjoyed the time skips and the drama was fun
Love and Monsters - sure it's silly but it's also really fun
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - I don't think the cybermen appearing as ghosts on their way from the other universe thing makes much sense, but it's a good tragic end for Rose and has one of my favorite scenes ever of the daleks and cybermen arguing
The Runaway Bride - yes I love Donna's intro and their dynamic, but if I really think about it this plot is ridiculous
Good episodes I don't like
The Lazarus Experiment - This falls pretty firmly into being a very classic who monster of the week format, but I was bored
42 - I just really don't love the genre of story where they're trapped on a single space old station/ship with an invisible enemy
Voyage of the Damned - I couldn't think of anything strictly wrong with it, but I was bored
Midnight - This falls under the same genre as 42, just not my thing
Planet of the Dead - a little uninteresting, but a fine episode technically
The Waters of Mars - ok, this story is actually great, but I can't handle the water zombies. I've only seen it once. I will, however, be reading the novelization
Bad episodes I don't like
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - It was a little all over the place and I think trying to bring in the actual origin of Satan was lazy writing
The End of Time - Just, what? Apart from not liking Simm!Master anyway, this plot made no sense and the Master's plan had no apparent goal and his characterization was SO over the top (yes even for the Master) and they brought Gallifrey in but in the worst way. That said, Ten and Wilfred are a great duo
Episodes that are kind of offensive
The Christmas Invasion - It was otherwise a little wonky but fun, but I can't get over the treatment of Mickey
The Shakespeare Code - Same as above, otherwise kind of weird but alright, except for the way Martha is treated
Human Nature/The Family of Blood - I actually love this story but it is SO upsetting the way Martha gets all the responsibility, deals with a ton of period racism and sexism despite being the most educated person there, loses the only friend she makes, is constantly brushed aside by the Doctor, and basically wins the day but is NOT acknowledged for it
Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords - alright, this one is just bad for a number of reasons, but it goes here because I'll never be over brave, medically trained Martha getting her big independent heroic year which is...traveling and talking about how amazing the Doctor is while her family is held hostage

Top 5 doctor who episodes
This should be considered cruel and unusual punishment! How am I supposed to pick five?!
But pick five I must so..
Unicorn and the Wasp
Tooth and Claw
Midnight
The Christmas Invasion
Partners in Crime
I went based on what I love and rewatch over and over again, not necessarily ones that are really fucking good. So this list is missing some bangers like Blink, The Empty Child, Doomsday, The Dalek, The God Complex, Vincent and the Doctor, and Demons of the Punjab. Those are objectively really good story telling, but I have to be in the mood to watch them whereas the top five I will just sit and watch whenever I need a comfort watch.
Put “top 5 [topic]” in my ask and I will answer
